With Godzilla x Kong‘s box office success and Godzilla Minus One’s Oscar win making the kaiju legend more relevant than ever, let’s turn the doomsday clock back to 1998 as Awfully Good Movies tackles Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s infamous American reboot, known simply as Godzilla!
With TriStar eager to keep its rights agreement with Toho to make its own Godzilla trilogy after director Jan de Bont was dropped from the film, they turned to the same duo that just blew up both the box office and the White House with Independence Day, who were allowed to do whatever the hell they wanted with the giant lizard’s American debut as long as they could get the flick made within a year for Memorial Day 1998. And much like the Toho executives who first saw Emmerich’s redesigned Godzilla, the eager audiences of Godzilla fans in Japan and...

While plans to further TriStar’s Godzilla franchise on the big screen fell through, the animated sequel turned out to be a great alternative. Godzilla: The Series debuted mere months after the 1998 film was released, and it went on to become a popular part of Fox Kids’ Saturday morning programming. And although this continuation had a limited lifespan of just two seasons, it still managed to do the impossible and redeem Roland Emmerich’s widely disliked adaptation.
Similar to Ultra Q, Godzilla: The Series saw Dr. Niko “Nick” Tatopoulos leading a specialized team — Humanitarian Environmental Analysis Team, or H.E.A.T. for short — in the struggle against the giant and disruptive creatures (often referred to as “mutants”) who have begun to appear all across the globe. Aiding them was the lone, surviving offspring of Godzilla teased at the end of the film. And to ensure the juvenile Godzilla stood...

The comedy world—heck, the whole world—mourns the passing of Richard Lewis, whose death was announced yesterday. The 76-year-old comic was a mainstay on the circuit since the mid-1970s. Though he has several comedy specials and movie appearances under his belt (plus the early 1990s sitcom “Anything But Love” opposite Jamie Lee Curtis) his most widely-seen work was surely as Larry David’s bickering foil on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Lewis’s amplified version of himself appeared in the first regular series episode in 2000 (recall that “Curb” began as a one-off special in 1999), and can be currently seen in the 12th season, which is now airing.
Lewis was nominated for a SAG Award in 2006, for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series. His special “The I’m Exhausted Concert” was nominated for a Cable Ace Award in 1989.

Although John Goodman is best remembered for his role as working-class father Dan Conner on TV’s “Roseanne” and “The Conners,” he’s also enjoyed a very successful big screen career as well, working with such directors as the Coen brothers, Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. Let’s look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Surprisingly (and criminally), not one of these roles brought Goodman an Oscar nomination. He did compete at the Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actor for “Barton Fink” (1991), but the academy went for his co-star Michael Lerner instead. Goodman also contended at the Globes four times as Best TV Comedy Actor for “Roseanne”, winning in 1993.
At the Emmys, Goodman earned seven consecutive Best Comedy Actor bids for “Roseanne” (1989-1995) and won for his guest performance on “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” (2007). He’s also contended for his TV-movie work: once as...

Halle Berry has impressively batted off a troll who criticised her for posting a nude photo online.
On Saturday (8 April), the Oscar-winning actor posed for the snap, in which she leans on the railing of a balcony while holding a glass of wine.
“I do what I wanna do,” she captioned it, adding: “Happy Saturday.”
While Berry received an overwhelming amount of praise from her fans, one cynical person replied: “Imagine being in your fifties, still posting nudes for attention in menopause when you should be chilling with the grandkids. Aging with dignity is no longer a thing.”
An unfazed Berry quote tweeted the post, and wrote, in reference to the troll: “Did you guys know the heart of a shrimp is located in its head?”
Berry’s fans were left in hysterics over the actor’s stoic response.

“It’s hard to put into words how brilliant my uncle Michael was, and how influential he was to me,” Sam wrote. “His stories always inspired me and made me fall in love with acting. He was the coolest, most confident, talented guy, and the fact that he was my blood will always make me feel special. Everyone that knows him knows how insane he was — in the best way.”

The Antlers have returned with their first new song in nearly two years. On Thursday, they unveiled “I Was Not There,” an introspective ballad that captures their signature sound and style. Alongside the release, they also announced a special, one-off show in New York this June.
“Perhaps counterintuitively, ‘I Was Not There’ is about the elusive experience of complete presence,” frontman Peter Silberman explained in a statement about the song. “Across three scenes, the song describes fleeting moments of clarity and wholeness, and the accompanying feeling of leaving yourself.”
To that end, the powerful-yet-succinct message of the song perfectly matches the subtle moods conveyed by the accompanying music. Starting out with just a hazy, nostalgic piano, the arrangement blossoms open with shimmering synths, expressive guitar lines, and drummer Michael Lerner’s tastefully syncopated part. Over top, Silberman’s silk-smooth vocals strike a symbolically appropriate balance between raw vulnerability and angelic beauty.

It’s the futuristic year of 2022. An awful incident had taken place in Benghazi. It’s a world where big corporations now run an essential function of society. It’s a bleak and depressing vision where people’s movements can be tracked by satellites. It seems like human nature de-evolves back to a blood-thirsty, and primitive instinct with warring factions convinced it’s survival of the fittest in a dystopian society that’s a prison.
This, ironically, also happens to be the backdrop of the 1994 film No Escape. The cult film came from future Goldeneye and The Mask of Zorro director Martin Campbell and starred the late, great Ray Liotta. The movie will be released for the first time on Blu-ray from Unearthed Classics. The Blu-ray will feature new interviews with director Campbell, producer Gale Anne Hurd, and co-writer Joel Gross.

Antonio Pérez‘ Seville-based Maestranza Films, producer of Benito Zambrano’s “Solas” and “The Sleeping Voice”), and Kiko Martinez Madrid-based Nadie Es Perfecto, the company behind Álex de la Iglesia’s “The Bar,” have teamed to co-produce a remake of Bigas Luna’s cult horror modern classic “Anguish” (1987).
Spain-born but based in Los Angeles, Spanish director F. Javier Gutiérrez is attached to direct. Gutiérrez’ second feature, horror “Rings” –part of the several remakes saga starting with Gore Verbinski’s “The Ring”– nabbed $83 million worldwide.
Luna’s original “Anguish” followed an ophthalmologist with a bizarre hobby –collecting eyes– and a dominant mother. Following his mother’s orders, he goes to a movie-theater, where he meets two friends. The feature they are watching, however, didsrupts their perception of reality.

One thing the new mockumentary “Frankenstein’s Monster’s Monster, Frankenstein” does quite well is prove that there are perks to appearing on a streaming service’s signature hit.
David Harbour, the stolid and familiar presence from Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” is given the opportunity to cut loose here with a broad, loopy half-hour that feels a bit like one long comedy sketch, with all that implies. He’s evidently having a great deal of fun playing his fictional late father, a pompous theater actor who acted in his own play about Dr. Frankenstein and recorded the piece for posterity. But even half an hour is a generous amount of time to give to a story that feels, well, sketchy, with reversals whose pile-up is more novel than truly funny and with jokes that feel underwritten at best.

"My father had a compulsion to court disaster..." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a comedy short, mockumentary special titled Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein, starring actor David Harbour from Hellboy and "Stranger Things". In the film, Harbour delves into the enigmatic history of his legendary acting family, as he examines his father's legacy and role in a made-for-tv play called – of course – "Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein". With appearances by Alfred Molina, Kate Berlant, Heather Lawless, Michael Lerner, and more special guests, Harbour explores the depths of his family's acting lineage to gain insight into his father's legacy -- all in 28-minutes. This looks super kooky, creative, and hilarious; it's cool to see Netflix developing comedic ideas like this. More mockumentaries! Enjoy this. Here's the first trailer for Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein, on Netflix's YouTube: When actor David Harbour finds lost footage of his father's disastrous televised stage play of a literary classic,...

Netflix has released its first trailer for the campy mockumentary Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein.
The cast includes David Harbour, Alex Ozerov, Kate Berlant, Mary Woronov, Alfred Molina, Heather Lawless and Michael Lerner.
The mockumentary, written by Arrested Development producer John Levenstein, follows Harbour as he (the fictional version of himself) digs into the found footage of his father’s televised stage adaptation of Frankenstein. The trailer offers just a glimpse into the faux-dramatic spoof with scenes of the found footage of the TV play intercut with Harbour being warned, "There's a lot of things about your father you ...

“These are big movies,” insists Michael Lerner’s studio boss in the Coen brothers’ 1991 hit Barton Fink, “about big men – in tights, both physically and mentally!” He’s trying to explain to John Turturro’s angsty writer the inherent parameters of a wrestling movie, insisting: “We don’t put Wally Beery in a fruity movie about suffering.” Yet just as William Faulkner reportedly did uncredited rewrites on Beery’s 1932 picture Flesh, so writer-director Stephen Merchant here manages to subvert the genre and inject some of “that Barton Fink feeling” into this uplifting romp. Inspired by Max Fisher’s similarly titled Channel 4 documentary about a Norwich wrestling clan, Fighting With My Family is a hugely likable underdog tale, packing plenty of crowd-pleasing comedy wallop,...

And so it was written, that a beast would come in the form of film, and that film would beget others due to profit, and those films would spread across the horror landscape to mostly whispered calls of, “meh”. Not for this little demon, however; as all of The Omen films work for me in one way or another, bringing us to number four and the first for the small screen, Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The script gets flipped, yet it’s more of the same, and I’m not complaining.
Originally broadcast as part of the Fox Night at the Movies, Omen IV was trounced by ABC’ MacGyver on one side, CBS’ Murphy Brown/Designing Women on the other, and NBC’s Fresh Prince/Blossom on the other other. And as expected, no sins lain upon the critics were forgiven. This thing got roasted on the coals of Hell itself.

John Goodman shockingly never won an Emmy for his role as working-class father Dan Conner in “Roseanne” despite competing seven consecutive times as Best Comedy Actor for the ABC sitcom (1989-1995). He did eventually win as Best Drama Guest Actor in 2007 for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” but now he could finally cash in that “Roseanne” Emmy I.O.U. with the upcoming series revival, premiering on Tuesday, March 27. But Goodman hasn’t only made a name for himself on TV. In honor of his return to the small screen, let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen performances. Tour through our photo gallery above of Goodman’s 20 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Surprisingly (and criminally), not one of these roles brought Goodman an Oscar nomination. He did compete at the Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actor for “Barton Fink” (1991), but the academy...

Long live Michael Laughlin. Two years after he released one of my favorite early ‘80s oddities, Strange Behavior (I wrote about it here), he was back to unleash the next chapter in a proposed ‘Strange’ trilogy, Strange Invaders (1983). And while the former is a tribute to Mad Scientist films of the ‘50s via an updated Slasher take, the latter tips its fedora to the great Alien Invasion films of the same era. It may not reach the same dizzyingly weird heights, but Strange Invaders is an affectionate romp that captures the feel of those bygone drive-in classics and solidifies Laughlin’s unique voice.
A co-production between Emi Films and Lone Wolf McQuade Associates, Strange Invaders was released by Orion Pictures in mid September stateside to positive reviews and lackluster box office. Returning only a quarter of its $5 million plus budget, this was the Way of the Laughlin – everyone liked his movies,...

Allison Janney isn't an Olympian, but she still has the chance to break a world record this year.
If the actress wins the Emmys for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy for Mom and outstanding guest actress for Masters of Sex (as she did last year), Janney would break Cloris Leachman's record for most Primetime Emmy wins.
"I feel the pressure," Janney, 56, tells People. "But truthfully I'm just happy to be invited to the party."
Regardless of whether she breaks the record, Janney has enjoyed a long and prosperous career in Hollywood – not that it hasn't had its bumps along the road.

Twenty-five years later, and the Coen brothers’ Barton Fink meaning is still being debated. Is the Hotel Earle actually hell? Is this just a case of two filmmakers writing about their experiences in Hollywood? Does the threat of Red Scare loom over its every scene? Viewers may never know for certain, but it is fun to theorize and discuss the film at length; it’s a deep enough film that is open to multiple interpretations that rewards with every rewatch.

It's like you can't get enough of sweet deals and a blank check to one of the world's largest internet superhero stores! Not Blank Check staring Brian Bonsall, Karen Duffy, Miguel Ferrer, James Rebhorn, Tone Lōc, Jayne Atkinson and Michael Lerner though...even though if we had our own roller coaster in the back it would be pretty sweet. Special Mention: The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Directed by Dario Argento
Screenplay by Dario Argento
1970, Italy
Genre: Giallo
One of the most self-assured directorial debuts of the 70’s was Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Not only was it a breakthrough film for the master of Giallo, but it was also a box office hit and had critics buzzing, regardless if they liked it or not. Although Argento would go on to perfect his craft in later films, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage went a long way in popularizing the Giallo genre and laid the groundwork for later classics like Deep Red. A difficult film to discuss without spoiling many of its most impressive and famous scenes, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is a fairly straightforward murder mystery, albeit with many twists, turns and one of the best surprise endings of all time. But...
