Oscar-nominated actor John Malkovich has been tapped to star in the crime drama TV series "Humboldt" from "True Detective" and "Mr. Robot" producers Sony Pictures Television and Anonymous Content.
Based on Emily Brady's best-selling book and boasting a script by Michael A. Lerner ("Love and Mercy"), the story revolves around the Northern California community that for nearly four decades has existed primarily on the cultivation and sale of marijuana.
The author spent a year living among the town's secretive residents and offers an intimate look at how the looming legalization impacts the community. Malkovich will star as the patriarch of the Humboldt crime family.
Malkovich, Lerner, Elliot Webb, Alissa Philips, Alex Goldstone, Jennifer Rawlings and Adam Shulman will executive produce and Carl Franklin is set to direct. Malkovich's last TV series regular role was as Blackbeard in "Luther" creator Neil Cross' shortlived NBC drama "Crossbones".

Intense, unconventional, often uncomfortable portrait of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson that transcends the typical clichés about madness and creativity. I’m “biast” (pro): love John Cusack and Paul Dano
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I was never a particular fan of the Beach Boys, so I had no idea that there was such a dramatic story at the heart of the band… and as I can attest, you do not have to be a fan to find this intense, often uncomfortable portrait of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson utterly gripping. Though you may end up a fan by the end, as I did. *runs to iTunes to buy music*

The last few days of 2015 are spent in reflection about the year that's just wrapping up and in anticipation of the year just ahead, at least for me, and since we had our ten best list last week, this week it's time for the runners-up, the fifteen films that also filled out our year. As always, I look at this list and I think it would make a perfectly spiffy top ten if that's how things had shaken out, which is to say that the only real purpose of any of these lists is to remind you of more of the experiences that were worth having in a theater. There are plenty of good films that aren't on either of my lists this year. That doesn't mean I didn't like them or they're not good. It just means that these films meant more to me for some reason. For now,...

Over the course of the awards season so far, specifically during the precursors, no one has had a quicker ride to the top tier of contention than Paul Dano. Originally, it seemed like his excellent work in Love & Mercy was destined to be overlooked, but then something interesting happened…he started getting nominated, as well as winning in certain places. Now, he’s a legitimate threat to be nominated at the Academy Awards. I’m thrilled that such a good performance in such a small film is catching on, so it begs the question…have we been underestimating Dano the whole time? Let’s discuss that a bit now! This is the story of Brian Wilson the frontman for the Beach Boys. The movie shows us him in the 1960’s as an emerging superstar before mental illness gets the best of him, as well as in the 1980’s when he...

Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight" was the big winner at the 25th Gotham Independent Film Awards. The true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the child molestation in the Catholic church took home the Best Feature and Screenplay trophies. I love this film! It's ripe for melodrama but McCarthy wisely avoided that!

Nabbing Best Actress, Screenplay, Breakthrough Director and Feature noms, Marielle Heller’s Diary of a Teenage Girl leads all Gotham Award nominations with four, while Carol is technically tied with a foursome of mentions as well. With a pre-win (Directors Tribute) accompanied by a trio of noms in the Best Feature, Screenplay and Actress categories, Todd Haynes’ drama will likely find xeroxed nom mentions for both the Indie Spirits and Oscars.

Kicking off the onslaught of awards this year, as always, is the Gotham Independent Film Awards, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Behind the sunny surf-happy image of the iconic '60s band The Beach Boys, frontman Brian Wilson suffers in silence with mental illness - the premise of Love & Mercy. The exact nature (and cause) of his problem isn't clearly defined by indie writer/director Bill Pohlad, which makes life difficult for his stars John Cusack and Paul Dano, playing Wilson at different stages of his life. Both actors give their all but to little effect.
There is a fascinating story in here, somewhere, which Pohlad can't quite extrapolate from the maudlin romance he pitches between the middle-aged Wilson (Cusack) and model-turned-car-saleswoman Melinda (although it is a touching performance from Elizabeth Banks). She appears to develop a Florence Nightingale complex when Wilson presents himself at her showroom, with no social graces at all,...

Chicago – Brian Wilson has been called one of the greatest songwriters in popular music history. His tonality and approach towards his best compositions have been studied like Mozart. In “Love & Mercy,” we see that the thing that made Wilson great also had the power to destroy him.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
From the beginnings in 1961 of The Beach Boys, the group that Brian Wilson composed for, to about the mid 1960s, Wilson’s output was incredible, with an ear towards creating songs that layered voices and instruments in a way that still defies logic. But his talent and subsequent popularity came with a price – the instability of Wilson’s sensitive nature made drug use, depression and isolation a by-product of his success. In “Love & Mercy” – the title taken from a 1988 Brian Wilson song – screenwriters Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner and director Bill Pohlad pay homage to the artist that is Brian Wilson,...

Chicago – John Cusack has never rested on his laurels, which are many in his film career, nor stood still as an artist or an actor. His latest film is the magnificent “Love & Mercy,” in which he portrays music legend Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys as a middle aged man, trying to break free of the circumstances in his life.
Written by Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner, and directed by Bill Pohlad, “Love & Mercy” – derived from a Brian Wilson song title – is the story of two crucial phases in the songwriter’s life. The younger phase, portrayed by Paul Dano, checks in with Wilson as he puts together The Beach Boys’ album masterpiece, “Pet Sounds.” At this point, the dissolution of Brian Wilson as Rock Star is beginning, and as a result the older phase of his life comes into view.

One of my all time favorite actors happens to be John Cusack. Over the past decade or so, one of my newer favorites is Paul Dano. As such, the concept of the two of them in a film together pumped me up from the minute that they were cast in Love & Mercy. Then, I saw it and realized that they wouldn’t be sharing the screen, but instead would be combining to bring the Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson to life. The film is really strong, using both Cusack and Dano to great effect in a soft of hybrid performance. It’s very unique, and now audiences will get to enjoy their work this weekend when the movie comes to theaters. If you don’t know who Brian Wilson is, well…where have you been? He’s the frontman for the Beach Boys, and this is his story. We see...

Based on the life of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, Love & Mercy depicts the singer’s descent into mental illness at the peak of the band’s popularity in the 1960s, while in the 1980s a chance meeting with a car saleswoman promises to save him from the brink of destruction. Paul Dano, as the young Wilson, is endearingly awkward yet creatively brilliant, capable of creating harmonies that most wouldn’t dream of. While years later his forward-thinking vision would earn the 1966 album “Pet Sounds” a place in the pop music canon, at the time it caused major tension within the band. Twenty years later, Wilson, now played by John Cusack, is a neurotic, washed-up and over-medicated version of his former self thanks to a dangerous codependency on his...

Director Bill Pohlad and writers Michael A. Lerner and Oren Moverman twist the biopic genre by paralleling Wilson's disorderly heyday with his eventual nervous breakdown and subsequent Stockholm syndrome-like relationship with the dubious Dr. Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). Paul Dano plays the spacey, slowly frittering '60s Wilson — as he was just starting to go solo and dip his toes in the world of orchestral pop — while Cusack plays 1980s Wilson, who was suffering creatively and wrestling with paranoid schizophrenia. Dano and Cusack's beautiful performances draw you into Wilson's inner world with the support of Elizabeth Banks as Melinda Ledbetter, the sparky Cadillac saleswoman who steps into his life to save it (and went on to become his current wife). Roadside Attractions has released a brand new trailer for Love & Mercy, starring John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti.
Love & Mercy presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys. Set against the era defining catalog of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost.
What does Wilson think of the film? “Some of it was rough for me to sit through. It wasn’t always pleasant. I thought it was very factual.” Read the rest of the La Times interview with Wilson here.
Directed by Bill Pohlad, the film is written by Oren Moverman and Michael Alan Lerner.

We’ve had one look already at ambitious Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy, and here comes the second one, bringing new footage and focusing very slightly more on the later days of the Beach Boys musical genius. is directing this one, working from a script by Michael A. Lerner and Oren Moverman. Love & Mercy charts two periods in Wilson’s life, his younger days, where we see him at his creative peak, and he’s played by Paul Dano, and his post-nervous breakdown difficult times, where he’s embodied by John Cusack, seen here forming a connection with Elizabeth Banks’ Melinda Ledbetter. The movie aims to show both sides of his nature and his attitude to the fame and fortune that came along with his talents – both the good and the bad – plus his attempts to work through them with controversial therapist Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti). This has scored some festival buzz,...

The Brian Wilson biopic "Love and Mercy" is as wily and loose-limbed as the man himself, a dreamy and delirious ode to the troubled genius behind The Beach Boys. Director Bill Pohlad and writers Michael A. The Overnight
Director/Screenwriter: Patrick Brice
Two families meet at the park and set up a playdate that has unexpected outcomes for all. Cast: Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling, Judith Godrèche. (film synopsis from sxsw.com)

It’s hilarious. The boundaries of bromance, marriage, friendship and even penis comedy are pushed to a very funny limit with this film. It’s great to see Schilling doing great work outside of “Orange is the New Black.”
Final Score: 8/10

I’ve learned more than I ever wanted to about Brian Wilson over the years, mostly because old people liked The Beach Boys, and unlike a lot of other music old people liked, nothing about The Beach Boys ever brought me around.
That out of the way, I’m told (and, like I said, I’ve learned) that Wilson’s life is something a lot of people find to be interesting.
And, that out of the way, Love & Mercy has two of my favorite actors in it, playing the same guy, so it’s worth watching for that alone.
This is going to be an interesting effort, and it’s been getting attention lately, with people talking it up more than you might think for a film by producer come director Bill Pohlad, starring not quite the biggest names, about a guy that isn’t exactly a hot topic. That...

Starring John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti, watch the first trailer for Love & Mercy.
The movie presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys. Set against the era defining catalog of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost.
In September 2014, the film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. In the La Times’ early look at Love & Mercy, Steven Zeitchik wrote the movie, “Is a refreshing surprise,” and “offers the prospect of actors at the top of their game. Dano suggests a man whose genius does fierce battle with his other instincts, while even in Wilson’s beaten-down state Cusack avoids a mopey victim and goes for something edgier and funnier, his spaciness undercut with comedy.”

Brian Wilson turned out a fair number of iconic musical moments in his career, especially during his Beach Boys days. What a feat it requires to cinematically tell the story of Brian Wilson, the eccentric American musician and chief songwriter (among other things) of The Beach Boys who came up with the ultimate oddity of concept albums, Pet Sounds, in 1966. There and after, Wilson battled with crippling bouts of depression and substance abuse. He stayed in bed for 3 years, where he ballooned to 340 pounds.
What’s for sure is you can’t tell his story “straight”; that is, it cannot be told linearly, because Wilson’s mind doesn’t have a straight progression. Pet Sounds is too eclectic – a beautifully haphazard arrangement of instruments including flutes, harpsichords, bicycle bells, and even barking dogs – for an ordinary, Hollywood-served biopic.
The best biopics, I find, are structured according to the subject’s personality, or I should say the filmmaker’s interpretation of the subject. In that sense, Love & Mercy is successful. It...

“Oh, the loneliness in this world / Well, it’s just not fair” “Lonely. Scared. Frightened.” If we take Bill Pohlad’s impressive Love & Mercy at face value – which is difficult to do with any biopic, particularly ones that are as complicated and complex as Pohlad’s feature – Beach Boy Brian Wilson wrote both of those lines during a fraught time in his life. The first lyric is taken from his song “Love And Mercy,” from which Pohlad’s film (obviously) takes its name, the second is scribbled on a note early in the feature. Both lines reflect the pain Wilson felt throughout his life, an emotional and mental ailing that eventually pushed the musical genius into a lifestyle that approached that of a recluse, a captive and a victim. The story of the Beach Boys proper has been put to the screen before, but Pohlad’s film (beautifully scripted by Oren Moverman and Michael A. Lerner) is...

Here are a couple small reports about new projects that have just attached directors. We don't have a great deal of info about either one, but as we expect to be following up on these soon we'll give you the early rundown now. First, Niels Arden Oplev, who made the original Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is now set to direct Game Theory for Summit. The film is written by Michael Alan Lerner, and is about "a college professor and game theorist who gets sucked into a large-scale global crisis." Serious stuff! Maybe. The director has been on the verge of breaking into Us films since the runaway success of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but the two films he has been attached to (The Keep and The Last Photograph) haven't really moved forward yet. He has done the pilot for the CBS show The Rememberer,...

It’s been well-documented that the next feature film for Niels Arden Oplev, director of the supremely successful Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will be The Last Photograph, an Afghanistan-set drama that’s already drawn consideration from big names such as Christian Bale and Sean Penn.
However, as production on The Last Photograph isn’t set to begin until 2012, it’s possible that Oplev could sneak in another project beforehand. Whether or not he is planning to do that is still up in the air, but it has been confirmed that he is now in negotiations to direct a second pending project — Game Theory. [Deadline]

Relativity is partnering with Atlas Entertainment to develop Rubicon, a revenge thriller project created by stuntman Ric Roman Waugh (seen above) and Michael A. Lerner (of French Exit and Deadlines). Plot details are being kept under wraps at the moment, but the thriller is supposedly female-driven and set in a Mexican border town. Ric Roman Waugh, who has directed films like Exit, In the Shadows, and Felon, will be directing Rubicon. The project is being funneled through Relativity and Atlas' three-year, six-picture financing deal. I'm hoping with a title like Rubicon this will be a complex thriller, but it's hard to tell early. The reason why the title of this project captured my attention today is because Rubicon is the same working title that Bryan Singer's Valkyrie used when it was shooting. That turned out to be a thriller with a detailed and complex assassination plot. I doubt that...
