The first season of Issa Rae’s “Insecure” instantly placed it high up on the list of must-see HBO comedies. Based on the opening glimpse of Season 2, “Insecure” is going to have as much fun as it can while stuck in traffic.
The latest look at the show’s second season may not have any inspirational mirror raps, but it’s a dreamy glide through the world of Issa (also her character’s name), soundtracked by Calvin Harris’ “Slide” and some equally dreamy Frank Ocean vocals.

Based on the quick cameos in this teaser, it doesn’t look we’ll be getting a resolution to last season’s love triangle any time soon. Lawrence (Jay Ellis), Issa’s longterm boyfriend, and Daniel (Y’lan Noel) both pop up as the world freezes around the show’s star.

Our viewing notes and geeky spots for Doctor Who series 9: The Zygon Inversion...
We’re now eight episodes into this series of Doctor Who, and after tonight you can’t complain that they’re not giving Peter Capaldi enough to do. In an episode unlike any we’ve had before, there didn’t seem to be much room for references, allusions and other such things; the ones we did spot are listed below. Did we get them all, or were we too caught up in Mr Capaldi’s eyebrows to notice some? Let us know in the comments!
Five References Rapid
This isn’t the first time aliens have posed as policemen; in 1971’s Terror Of The Autons, a memorable sequence saw the third Doctor pull off a policeman’s face to reveal a blank plastic dummy underneath. The sequence drew a number of complaints -...

He’s never been one for holding his tongue, and Noel Gallagher told Rolling Stone magazine that he thinks pop music is “f*cking awful.”
In his new interview, the Oasis guitarist declared that Taylor Swift certainly isn’t the talented songwriter everyone says she is- “Who says that? Her parents? Who’s ‘people’? Name these people. You’re f*cking lying. She seems like a nice girl, but no one has ever said those words, and you f*cking know it.”
As for Kanye West and his Grammy rant about Beck’s Album of the Year victory, Noel shared, “He’s a character, I’ll give him that. And I love his track ‘Black Skinhead.’ But somebody needs to buy that dumbass a dictionary so he can look up the word ‘artistry.’ Beck can play the banjo, for f*ck’s sake. Nobody plays the banjo! Black (born on June 30, 1937, in Chicago) was 77. Prior to Pretty Poison, Noel Black earned praise for the 18-minute short film Skaterdater (1965), the tale of a boy skateboarder who falls for a girl bike rider. Shot on the beaches of Los Angeles County, the dialogue-less Skaterdater went on to win the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film and tied with Orson Welles’ Falstaff - Chimes at Midnight for the Technical Grand Prize at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival. In their four years of extreme cooking, the Epic Meal Time crew has dumped hundreds of pounds of bacon on top of its creations. The salty cut of pig has topped everything from turkey to tacos and has appeared in all of the web series' episodes. Now, a major brand is taking advantage of bacon's omnipresent Epic Meal Time role. Collective Digital Studio, which is partnered with Epic Meal Time, has announced a deal with Hormel through which the food company's Black Label Bacon brand will become the official bacon of Epic Meal Time. The partnership will last for a year, over which Hormel plans to supply more than 1,300 pounds of bacon to Harley Morenstein and his band of sous chefs. That amount will cover all the bacon needs of the main Epic Meal Time show while also leaving plenty of strips for Handle It, the Emt web series that provides viable recipes.

Special Events scattered throughout the festival include a retrospective of indie filmmaker Penelope Spheeris that will feature her rock ‘n’ roll-based work, including the original The Decline of Western Civilization, plus The Decline of Western Civilization Part III, her influential punk film Suburbia (screening twice) and a collection of short films.

Happy Hallowe’en!
Howie Noel is a writer, artist and filmmaker. He created the web series Tara Normal, which he now brings to kickstarter. I had a chance to talk to him about Tara Normal , and his filming experiences.
Joshua Pantalleresco: What Inspired Tara Normal?
Howie Noel: Tara Normal was inspired by my love of the paranormal as a field and as a genre. I wanted to create a story using the genres of horror and science fiction. I always wanted to create a story starring a strong female character who saves the day and is fearless. My wife and I are both big fans of the X-Files so there are hints of a tribute in my stories as well. There’s actually of lot of my wife’s personality and more in the character.
Jp: Since a lot of your protrayal of Tara’s personality happens to come from your wife,...

The last couple years have been quiet for Vertigo, the DC imprint for mature-comics that published many of the most influential, renowned, and strangest comics of the 1990s: “The Sandman”, “Swamp Thing”, “Animal Man”, “Hellblazer”, “The Invisibles”, “Doom Patrol”, “Preacher”, and “Shade, the Changing Man”, among others. For many years Vertigo was the place-to-be for young ambitious comic writers trying to push the medium forward. Image Comics has taken that spot in recent years, with Vertigo receiving several blows; DC taking their Dcu characters and making them Dcu exclusive, DC canceling their flagship title “Hellblazer”, and the founder and executive editor of Vertigo, Karen Berger, stepping down from her role, having overseen the company from 1993-2013.
Right now Vertigo is being held up on just a few comics; their new flagship “Fables” and spinoff “Fairest”, “The Unwritten”, and normally “American Vampire”, but that comic is now on hiatus while Scott Snyder...

DC Entertainment released a ton of new solicitations earlier this week, revealing the first official image for Neil Gaiman’s upcoming “Sandman” prequel comic series along with announcing that the imprint will be launching six new series this year!
Revealed exclusively by The New York Times on Monday, it appears that Neal Gaiman will return with artist J.H Williams III (“Batwoman,” “Promethea”) for a new six-issue miniseries titled, “The Sandman: Overture”, serving as a prequel to the original Eisner Award winning “Sandman” series. First launched by Vertigo in 1989, “Sandman” followed the exploits of Dream, a character who exists as the personification of dreams and resides within “the Dreaming”, an imaginary realm in which people go to dream. After being held captive for 70 years, the character enters modern times and attempts to rebuild his kingdom in the land of the Dreaming.

I was a sceptic; I thought it could not be done. I did not believe that London could host such an important global event, let alone pull it off with such grandiose confidence. But now the Olympics are over and to be honest, I don’t want it to end. Particularly considering my last images may be that of Jessie J ruining Queen, or Liam Gallagher proving he needs Noel. But with Britain standing 3rd in the medal rankings, we can be proud of our athletes’ efforts. Whether it was handball, hockey or dressage, my eyes were opened to the magic of the Olympics and I’m sad to see them go. So why not cling on for a little bit longer and join me as I attempt to blur the realms of Film and the Summer Olympics.

After receiving an “A” text about playing with body parts instead of just dolls, the girls are back in class at Rosewood High, and Ella Montgomery haunts them with literary terminology about blackmail and desperate actions. They’re all completely zoned out, and Emily finds a present in her purse from whoever dug up Alison's grave. Someone could easily mistake the gift as a nice gesture considering it was jewelry... had it not been decorated with human teeth! The liars immediately follow Emily to their secret meeting place (aka the bathroom) where Hanna shares her knowledge of teeth since she worked at a dentist office for like two days – well, of course the teeth are human. The girls assemble in the bathroom stall, and they drop the necklace into the toilet…with an automatic flush. Bye bye, evidence.

Comics and all closely-related creative works in the geek spectrum are celebrated in the Eagle Awards 2012 - with the final round of voting now open to the public.
It's a chance to pick your favourite artist, writer, colourist, letterer, editor, publisher, story, graphic novel and comics magazine, along with American, British, European and manga titles.
But it goes beyond the printed page. There will be trophies for best web-based comic and comics website, while a further accolade will honour the best comics-related TV show or movie.
All the nominations are listed in full below.
It's apparent that the TV/film nominations do not necessarily have to be adapted from a comic. The contenders in this category are: The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead, X-Men; First Class, Captain America and Misfits.
The Big Bang Theory isn't derived from a comic but features four characters who are keen fans of comics and sci-fi culture.

When The Black Swans began recording Don’t Blame The Stars three years ago, the record was intended as an agnostic re-imagining of Willie Nelson’s faith-fueled 1971 album Yesterday’s Wine, with allegiance to God replaced by allegiance to personal relationships. The band’s refusal to find higher meaning in the world was soon tested by the drowning-related death of violinist Noel Sayre. The tragedy seems to have only reaffirmed the album’s original thesis, with resulting songs that dwell on friendship, life’s unpredictability, and finding solace in music. Jerry DeCicca (whose stock has been on the rise ...

In this exploration of a lovelorn inner mindscape, a man in a tattered space suit runs from a crazy on horseback shooting arrows at him, towards some kind of portal, and emerges on a beach with the ruins of his past just off shore, "Planet of the Apes" style. Then things get weird. Hooray For Earth's "True Loves" was done by directorial team Young Replicant (Alex Takacs and Joe Nankin) who shot the beautiful video for Baths' "Lovely Blood Flow" last year.
"The video is an homage to our favorite Russian and eastern-european cult sci-fi. French artist Moebius and early Metal Hurlant were also big visual influences," Alex Takacs explained. "It's about mindscapes and the memory of true love."
The band just released another track (below) off the coming album, called "No Love," featuring the girls from Zambri, which singer Noel Heroux says was inspired by "Yuengling Black & Tan in the can.

Smack!!!!! That was Pretty Little Liars slapping me across my face tonight with an episode so epic that I don't think I can do this recap any justice, but dammit, I will do my best to try. Kudos to the entire cast and crew of Pretty Little Liars for preparing us for one helluva summer finale with a spectacular penultimate episode!
Despite Having Numerous Problems, Pretty Little Liars Know That Their Future Education Is The Most Important Thing of Their Lives
While it's storming like crazy outside the Hastings residence, Spencer, Hanna, and Aria discuss boys and the upcoming SATs they are preparing to take the next day. The girls (and us) wonder where the hell is Emily and we find out soon enough.
Emily has been out digging/playing in the dirt as if she was burying something, which is evident in her clothes and shoes. As Emily hides her evidence around the room,...

I don’t watch much TV these days but am glad I caught the BBC two-part drama, Blood and Oil, which Tambay mentioned in a post Here last week. Every now and then the BBC will turn out a decent contemporary drama that doesn’t draw from a Jane Austen or Charles Dickens novel of which Blood and Oil was the latest. At best, I expected a typical made-for-white-audience production with familiar cliches and themes surrounding Nigeria such as corruption, massive poverty despite its oil resources, mismanagement and misappriation of wealth. However, while these themes certainly were clearly present, the story unfolds mainly from the point of view of well developed black characters. As if this wasn’t surprising enough, at the heart of the story are two women – one black, one white - with links to the oil rich Niger delta region of Nigeria.
