Eyes of Fire is an interesting film. A low-budget horror venture from the mind of Avery Crounse, it is a curious amalgam of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Sam Raimi. The storyline is a familiar one. Set in the 1700s, Reverend Will Smythe (Dennis Lipscomb) is a zealous preacher who entrances the simple Irish immigrant folk of Dalton’s Ferry. In between his fire and brimstone sermons, he can be found burning “witches” for heresy in his spare time. He becomes romantically involved with Eloise (Rebecca Stanley), the wife of settlement founder, Marion Dalton (Guy Boyd), an avid woodsman who goes on extended hunting trips to forage for the village. Of course, since he isn’t there to address his spouse’s needs, she turns to Will for spiritual guidance...

A hundred million viewers tuned in to ABC back in ’83 to find out if the world would end with a bang or a whimper. Edward Hume and Nicholas Meyer’s daring docudrama reacquainted Americans with their status as hostages in a global game of nuclear roulette. Gruesome nuclear annihilation visuals complement fine performances led by Jason Robards. The tense, thoughtful show is presented in separate TV and theatrical versions.

Eyes Of Fire screens Tuesday, November 8th at 7:30pm in 35mm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 E Lockwood Ave,) as part of The St. Louis International Film Festival. The screening will be introduced by We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman
A few years back, Cinema St. Louis by chance came into possession of a 35mm print of Eyes Of Fire, an unjustly forgotten horror film shot more than three decades ago in the backwoods of the Missouri Ozarks. It was the directorial debut of experimental photographer Avery Crounse. For the 25th anniversary of the St. Louis International Film Festival, Cinema St. Louis feels duty-bound to give a respectful nod to their celluloid past — every other work in the fest screens digitally — by cracking open the film cans and offering a rare opportunity to view this criminally underseen gem in glorious 35mm. The event takes place at 7:30pm on Wednesday.

The death of Disney characters — Disney parents especially — has left an indelible mark on kids for decades. Little Cinderella sobbing at her father’s bedside after his untimely death. Anna and Elsa’s parents’ ship getting swallowed up by massive waves. The thundering shot that echoes through the snow-covered forest, silencing Bambi’s mom’s cries of “Keep running!” A sudden flash of sharp teeth and big, heavy fins killing Nemo’s mom and hundreds of his brothers and sisters. The dust settling in the canyon, so quiet with the stampede gone, empty, save for little Simba, nudging Mufasa’s nose and tugging on his ear, begging, “Dad, we gotta go home” — to no response. The frequency with which Disney characters become orphaned or have just one parent has inspired countless memes and jokes and even research studies. So when the makers of Pixar’s newest film, “The Good Dinosaur,...

Your muscles contort. Your skin bubbles and stretches. Your loins throb and your limbs writhe. You thrash in the throes of excruciating pain and agonizing pleasure. Before you even realize your body has betrayed you, like a snake shedding its skin, you are born anew. Perhaps the most visceral of the horror genres, body horror represents the most intimate of all fears. It’s the inescapable sensation that the shell housing every synchronized component keeping you alive is under attack. Yet it is more than simple infection; it is metamorphosis, a mutation that does not always spell death. More so, it may even be the start of a beautiful new life.
The human body has long been the enemy of horror films. One only has to look as early as The Invisible Man or The Wolfman for manifestations of physical forms undergoing irrevocable change. But the body horror genre encompasses...

Though the even officially kicks off on Thursday, Friday is when Comic-Con normally shifts into high gear. The 2013 installment of the annual convention is no different, with several big ticket panels filling up the day.
Though the news was leaked early by series creator George R. R. Martin, "Game of Thrones" is on the scheduled as returning to the San Diego Comic-Con. It'll be joined by other TV standouts like "The Walking Dead," "Marvel's Agents of Shield," "Bones," "The Following," "Falling Skies," and a pilot screening and panel for "Almost Human."
As for movies, Sony and Screen Gems will have a two-hour panel that will include "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Robocop," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" and "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones." "Veronica Mars," "Kick-Ass 2" and "Riddick" will also have a presence.

Chicago – Warner Brothers likes to pull handfuls of titles out of their immensely deep catalog and they’ve come back with a unique, interesting wave of releases at low prices to spice up your Summer this year. The films have little in common (although several could be classified as sci-fi) and vary wildly in quality but all are likely to have a fan or two out there wondering why they haven’t been released on Blu-ray. Now they have.

Unless you’re an avid consumer of business news, you probably haven’t heard of Melissa Francis. Last week, the Fox Business Network announced that the Harvard graduate will soon anchor a 5 p.m. news program covering Wall Street, stocks, bonds, and other grown-up things that I know nothing about. But here’s someone you probably have heard of: Avery Jessup, 30 Rock’s conservative media personality and Jack Donaghy’s wife/baby mama. There are inevitable pros and cons to airing a one-hour episode of a sitcom. Some stories that wouldn't have the chance to develop fully in 30 minutes get to do so with the extra time. Then again, there are others that either drag on or are unnecessarily added due to the doubling of episode length.
30 Rock's super-sized "Hey, Baby, What's Wrong" featured both of these pluses and minuses. Jenna and Pete dealing with the former's case of the yips, and Tracy and Frank helping Lutz be a dirt bag, were basically perfect examples of plots that would have been hurt by 21 minutes of run time.
With Jenna, we were able to diagnose the problem, watch her struggle through it and then fix it in a very well-paced funny story. The return of Dr. Spaceman, with his assumption that there is no field of medicine that deals with the brain, and finding...

Chicago – It’s the end of the world as we know it, and the ragtag resistance fighters of “Falling Skies,” starring Noah Wyle from “ER,” are defending themselves against a surprise extraterrestrial colonization of earth. Live free or die hard.
TV Rating: 4.0/5.0
Falling Skies combines 2009’s “District 9” (space alien lizards), 1984’s “Red Dawn” (kids practicing guerilla warfare) and, of course, 1996’s “Independence Day” fairly effectively, while not going too far into the philosophical and psychological damage that a nuclear war-style destruction could have on a delicate American society. Noah Wyle is excellent as a conflicted ex-Military history professor turned warrior who represents a reasonable voice among the chaos.
The series opens with a series of children’s drawings, with a youthful voice over describing the invasion of a space alien force that knocks out most of the important cities in the United States, and puts the rest of the...

Connor Jessup is the key to Falling Skies. Or at least his character is.

To say that Special Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) has been on an out-of-this-world journey is a bit misleading, seeing as she didn't vacate the planet Earth... but she still visited an entirely different Earth nonetheless.
Confused? Well, welcome to "Fringe."
The first season of the J.J. Abrams-created television series concluded with Dunham's relocation to an alternate reality in the presence of the mystifying Dr. William Bell (Leonard Nimoy), who has set up shop inside of the still-standing World Trade Center in one of presumably many distinctions between the two worlds.
But that's not where we are when the second season premiere begins. The episode, penned by Abrams and Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, opens with a car crash.
The victim is a partially amnesiac Olivia Dunham, clearly returned from the alternate universe but with no memories of her excursion. On her trail is a murderous shape-shifter (mostly played by...
