the stage in the 1920s.
He nearly drowned while filming a scene in which a seaplane crashes and sank faster than expected in the WWII propaganda film, 49th Parallel (1941). Lovell couldn't swim.
Solidly built, ruddy complexioned character actor and stage director. Often played pompous regents and assorted aristocrats, or minor villains.
