Details of Mike Leigh’s new film are beginning to emerge. The title, Hard Truths, and the leading cast have been confirmed.
Mike Leigh’s new film Hard Truths will be his first new release in five years. Mike Leigh’s films have been more sporadic in recent years, but it’s very much a case of quality over quantity, from Timothy Spall’s astonishing turn as Mr Turner in 2014 to 2018’s epic historical drama Peterloo.
Known for his improvisational method of creating characters, there is no script, in fact there us often no basic idea of what the plot will be when his actors are cast. Leigh begins by having private conversations with his actors about people they know in real life followed by an in-depth period of inprovisation. Actors are then introduced to each other and over an intensive couple of weeks, even months, the characters are developed.

Following 2018’s Peterloo, Mike Leigh has openly discussed how difficult it was to finance his next feature. Thankfully, he recently amassed the resources and quietly began production last year on his 23rd film, with the backing of Thin Man Films, The Mediapro Studio, co-financed by Film4 in association with Creativity Media, with Bleecker Street releasing the film in the US later this year, Studiocanal releasing in the UK, and Cornerstone Films handling international sales.
Titled Hard Truths, nothing was known about the project, but now Bleecker Street have unveiled the first image and details. Led by Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who worked with Leigh on his 1996 feature Secrets & Lies and received an Oscar nomination for her performance, the film marks Leigh’s “return to the contemporary world with a tough but compassionate intimate study of family life.” The London-set film also stars Michele Austin.

The cast of “Hard Truths,” the 23rd film from legendary British director Mike Leigh, has been unveiled, along with a first look image.
The feature, which like most Leigh projects has remained under a veil of secrecy, has reunited the filmmaker with Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who received an Oscar nomination for his 1996 drama “Secrets & Lies.” Michele Austin, another frequent Leigh collaborator, also stars.
“Hard Truths” was shot in London in 2023 and, following his historical epics “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo,” sees Leigh return to the contemporary world. However, plot details are still scarce, the film’s only description being that it’s a “tough but compassionate intimate study of family life”.
Leigh was joined behind the camera by his regular crew members, including producer Georgina Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, costume designer Jacqueline Durran (who recently earned her 9th Oscar nomination for her work on “Barbie”), production designer Suzie Davis, composer Gary Yershon...

Mike Leigh has unveiled the first look at what will be the “Another Year” and “Secrets & Lies” director’s 23rd feature film, a new project called “Hard Truths.”
“Hard Truths” reunites Leigh with actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who starred in 1996’s “Secrets & Lies” and was Oscar-nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in the film. You can see her looking concerned and harried while talking on the phone in the first look photo of the film above.
After last directing “Mr. Turner” and “Peterloo,” both of which were historical dramas, Leigh is back in a contemporary setting for “Hard Truths.” Specific plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the film is described as a “tough but compassionate and intimate study of family life.” Michele Austin, another of Leigh’s frequent collaborators, also stars.

Mike Leigh’s hotly-anticipated, but super-secretive, new film will see the iconoclastic British director reunite with his Secrets & Lies star Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
Hard Truths is Leigh’s first film since 2018’s Peterloo and will co-star frequent Leigh collaborator Michele Austin (Another Year, Secrets & Lies). After Peterloo and 2014’s Mr. Turner, both period dramas, Hard Truths will see Leigh return to the modern day, with a drama described as “a tough but compassionate intimate study of family life.”
Other Leigh regulars returning for Hard Truths include producer Georgina Lowe, cinematographer Dick Pope, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, production designer Suzie Davis, composer Gary Yershon and casting director Nina Gold.
Secrets & Lies, which premiered in Cannes in 1996, winning the Palme d’Or, featured Jean-Baptiste as a well-off Black professional who seeks out her biological mother, a poor white factory worker living in East London, played by Brenda Blethyn. Jean-Baptiste was Oscar-nominated for her performance,...

Mike Leigh is set to go into production on his as-yet-untitled, super-secretive and now long-awaited next feature this year, The Hollywood Reporter can reveal
In typical style for the beloved veteran filmmaker and seven-time Oscar nominee, there’s very little else to be revealed. Untitled Mike Leigh 2023, as the project is now called, is as much under wraps as it was when it was first announced he was embarking on another film in 2020 (when it was entitled Untitled 2020). Plot, cast, and practically everything else is being kept under the thick veil of secrecy that the auteur prefers to operate. What is known is that the film was due to go into production in 2020, but was among the features impacted by the Covid pandemic. Three years on, and the wheels are finally moving.

PBS and ITV have unveiled the first trailer for period drama Sanditon. The series is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel Sanditon that stars Reign star Rose Williams and Downton Abbey and Divergent’s Theo James.
Williams and James star alongside Last Tango In Halifax’s Anne Reid and Love Actually’s Kris Marshall in the eight-part series. Produced by Death in Paradise producer Red Planet Pictures, it was written by War and Peace and Mr Selfridge writer Andrew Davies.
Written only months before Austen’s death in 1817, Sanditon tells the story of the impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood, played by Williams, and her spiky relationship with the charming Sidney Parker, played by James. When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to a would-be coastal resort, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make.

The BFI London Film Festival (Oct 10 -21) has set its first premiere outside the UK capital with a Manchester screening of Mike Leigh’s Peterloo on October 17.
The screening, attended by writer-director Leigh and cast, will take place at the city’s Home venue and will be followed by a London screening two days later.
The Film4, BFI and Amazon-backed pic tells the story of the Peterloo massacre, which took place 199 years ago today. The notorious episode saw British government forces charge into a crowd of over 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty.
Starring are Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake, Neil Bell, Philip Jackson, Vincent Franklin, Karl Johnson and Tim McInnerny. Pic reunites Leigh with his regular team of Dick Pope (cinematography), Suzie Davies (production design), Jacqueline Durran (costumes), Christine Blundell (hair and make-up), Jon Gregory (editing) and Gary Yershon (music). Mike Leigh’s “Peterloo” is set to have its U.K. premiere as part of the BFI London Film Festival, but in an unusual move, the Oct. 17 gala screening will take place in the city of Manchester, where the film’s events take place, rather than in London. It will be the first time one of the festival’s premieres has taken place outside the British capital.
Leigh said he was “truly delighted” about the decision to screen the film in Manchester, in northern England, where the film’s events take place. The announcement Thursday fell on the 199th anniversary of the Peterloo massacre depicted in the movie.
“It’s always an honor to be included in the glorious London Film Festival, but how inspired and generous of the festival to screen ‘Peterloo’ in Manchester, where it all happened,” said Leigh.
Written and directed by Leigh, the film depicts the events surrounding the Aug.

PBS’ Masterpiece came to TCA, noticeably absent executive producer/force of nature Rebeccca Eaton, to showcase the next season of Victoria and first season of The Miniaturist.

PBS Masterpiece and British broadcaster ITV have teamed up to bring Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel Sanditon to television.
The broadcasters have partnered on the eight-part adaptation with War and Peace and Mr Selfridge writer Andrew Davies, which will be produced by Death in Paradise and Dickensian producer Red Planet Pictures.
Written only months before Austen’s death in 1817, Sanditon tells the story of the impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood and her spiky relationship with the charming Sidney Parker. When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to a would-be coastal resort, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make. The drama takes viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London and exposes the hidden agendas of each character and sees Charlotte discover herself and ultimately find love.

Any Mike Leigh movie is an event. And like many of the world’s most ambitious filmmakers, he’s gone to a streaming service for financing. Amazon Studios has acquired North American distribution rights to his latest, “Peterloo,” about the 1819 massacre, which begins filming today on location in England with a cast of over 100 actors, as yet unannounced. Leigh plans to finish in late August.
Amazon brought films by Woody Allen, Jim Jarmusch and Nicolas Winding Refn to Cannes last year, and is set to debut Todd Haynes’ “Wonderstruck” and Lynne Ramsay’s “You Were Never Really Here” at the festival, which could unveil “Peterloo” in 2018. Amazon Studios, unlike Netflix, shows its films in cinemas.

Mike Leigh has announced his next project is to be based on Manchester's Peterloo massacre.
Peterloo will be the directors first big screen project since 2014's Mr Turner.
In an interview with Screen International, he said: "There has never been a feature film about the Peterloo Massacre.
"Apart from the universal political significance of this historic event, the story has a particular personal resonance for me, as a native of Manchester and Salford."
Set in 1819, the film will be based around the events where the British government invaded a peaceful protest in St. Peter's Field, Manchester.
The infamous attack left around 15 people dead and over 700 protesters wounded.
The film is currently in development with Film4.

The Hollywood Reporter reported Friday that Mike Leigh, the director of Mr. Turner, will be making his next film about the Peterloo Massacre, a historical event that took place in 1819 in Britain. Leigh stated in a press release that, “There has never been a feature film about the Peterloo Massacre. Apart from the universal political significance of this historic event, the story has a particular personal resonance for me, as a native of Manchester and Salford.” The event itself resulted in the death of 15 people and injured over 700, so it’s no wonder that a filmmaker would want to bring this story to life.
Leigh’s recent success with Mr. Turner (which was reviewed on Sound on Sight), most notably at the Cannes Film Festival, solidifies him as a filmmaker who knows how to tell true stories. It’s no doubt that this next feature will do justice to the true events,...

During August 1819 in Manchester, a peaceful protest of tens of thousands seeking parliamentary reform was shut down by the British calvary at St. Peter's Field. Dubbed Peterloo, the massacre saw 700 working people injured and 18 killed. That's the subject of director Mike Leigh's next film, which will shoot in 2017 in collaboration with Thin Man Films and producer Georgina Lowe, who has worked with Mike Leigh since 1993's "Naked." Leigh's Oscar-nominated "Mr. Turner" cinematographer Dick Pope also returns. A native of Manchester and Salford, Leigh will be the first director to put this story to film. This marks his fourth period feature after "Topsy-Turvy" and "Vera Drake," both co-produced by Lowe, and "Mr. Turner," Leigh's biggest box office success overseas. Joining Leigh, who is currently rehearsing "Pirates of Penzance" for the English National Opera, and Lowe once again will be Executive Producer Gail Egan. Helen...

Mr. Turner writer-director Mike Leigh, who has been nominated for Oscars five times, knew exactly who he wanted to play the lead role in his new biopic about the revered and irascible English Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner.
That was, as he tells Deadline’s Pete Hammond in this video clip from our recent Oscar showcase The Contenders, veteran character actor Timothy Spall.
Spall was the only actor Leigh said he considered for the role, and he’s perhaps best known for his ratty role as Wormtail in the Harry Potter films. But before Spall picked up a paintbrush in the film, Leigh said he made Spall take two years of painting lessons. That’s dedication.
The film also stars Paul Jesson, Dorothy Atkinson and Marion Bailey. It was produced by Georgina Lowe.

Mike Leigh may be the early toast of the Cannes Film Festival for “Mr. Turner,” his bold meditation on the life and art of painter J.M.W. Turner, but it wasn't easy getting the film to the Croisette. The lavish period piece was made for around $15 million. As producer Georgina Lowe told TheWrap, that's 1 million pounds ($1.68 million) less than was spent on Leigh's last period piece, “Topsy Turvy,” a full 15 years ago. Corners were cut at every opportunity: One particularly striking shot of horses running across a field where Turner is standing, she said, came by accident...

Breaking: Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American, Latin American and Eastern European rights to an untitled film by Mike Leigh that will focus on Jmw Turner, considered England’s greatest artist. Leigh has set his Secrets & Lies star Timothy Spall to star, with Georgina Lowe producing and Gail Egan exec producing. The film will begin production in spring 2013 for a 2014 release. Production partners on the film include Film4, British Film Institute (BFI), Focus Features International, LipSync and Xofa Productions. The National Gallery, Tate Britain and the Royal Academy have granted special access to some of Turner’s original works. “Turner as a character is compelling,” Leigh said in a statement. “I want to explore the man, his working life, his relationships and how he lived. But what fascinates me most is the drama that lies in the tension between this driven eccentric and the epic, timeless world he evoked in his masterpieces.
