Google’s Year in Search was posted on Wednesday, and the data-rich lists prove that food was definitely on the mind in 2017.
The food-focused categories included the most searched for calorie counts, recipes, cocktails, and cookbooks. When it came to calories, people were very concerned about one magical drink and loads of fast food.
The top spot was none other than the short-lived Unicorn Frappuccino that caused a social media frenzy earlier this year. Curious users questioned how many calories were in the colorful creation— and the answer comes in at 410 per serving. Of course, that steep calorie count and...

13 years after he spent a month eating nothing but McDonald’s, “Super-Size Me” director (and human guinea pig) Morgan Spurlock has opened a fast-food restaurant of his own. Of course, anyone who’s seen Spurlock’s breakthrough 2004 documentary knows that he’s not just in it for the money — you couldn’t pay that guy to eat another Big Mac, let alone produce them by the billions. Spurlock has come a long way since his $65,000 film earned $22 million at the box office and inspired a revolution in how Americans are sold their heart attacks, but his ethos hasn’t changed. Once again, he’s decided to become part of the problem in order to solve it. This time, however, the problem he’s grappling with is one for which he’s partially responsible.
If “Super-Size Me” was about the danger of calories, the hugely watchable “Super-Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!

Morgan Spurlock’s follow-up to the Big Mac-guzzling documentary is a vanity project that fails to uncover anything groundbreaking
Morgan Spurlock is his own worst enemy. Ever since he bottomed out America’s collective stomach in 2004 with the fast food exposé Super Size Me, Spurlock’s films have gradually nudged his public persona into the foreground at the expense of the trenchant reportage that originally endeared him to us. Though his vanity hit its nadir with the male-grooming documentary Mansome — a feature-length ode to Spurlock’s trademark handlebar ‘stache — that narcissism still threatens to eclipse the subject at hand. And by revisiting his breakout pet topic of cheap food’s steep costs, Spurlock’s made his own self-absorption more abundantly present than ever.

Engaging with customers is normal behavior, but tweeting at the President of the United States? That’s a little more unorthodox. Acerbic isn’t a strong enough word to explain the singular attitude and outlook of author Maya Dardel. The gravelly-voiced has-been (well, maybe) is first introduced to the audience of Zachary Cotler and Magdalena Zyzak’s “A Critically Endangered Species” by way of a rambling NPR interview that caps off with Maya (an electric Lena Olin) announcing her intention to off herself, and that’s before the opening credits are even over. Maya is plain-spoken about her plan, only really mentioning it to tout her desire to find an heir and executor to take over her life and work (and money and house and fame and whatever else she has) after she does the deed.
Sarcastic, biting, and wholly unsentimental, Maya explains that “death’s lucrative” and she’s simply eager to get her affairs in order before shuffling off this mortal coil. She’s looking for a male author...

Michael Keaton stars as Ray Kroc, the man who turned McDonald’s into a global force, but this is flavourless stuff
If Morgan Spurlock’s gross-out documentary Super Size Me exposed the dangers of the McDonald’s Big Mac, The Founder is the fast-food franchise’s wholesome origin story. An attempt to recast its Henry Ford-style speedy system and memorable golden arches as hallmarks of all-American decency (and capitalist efficiency), John Lee Hancock’s bland biopic offers a sanitised and sympathetic take on the burger chain’s beginnings and the man who turned it into a multimillion-dollar enterprise.
Michael Keaton stars as Ray Croc, a persistent, Machiavellian salesman weaned on self-help tapes, who rebranded and franchised the San Bernardino burger bar started in 1940 by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald (Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch respectively). “Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent,” says Keaton’s Croc to the McDonalds,...

Directed by John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks), The Founder features the true story of how Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), a struggling salesman from Illinois, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Writer Robert Siegel (The Wrestler) details how Kroc maneuvered himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a billion-dollar empire. The film also stars Laura Dern as Ray Kroc’s first wife Ethel; John Carroll Lynch as Mac McDonald and Nick Offerman as Dick McDonald.

The Founder, about the man who built McDonald’s, is a fitting start to the new era. But Hollywood’s love affair with Trump’s kind of anarcho-capitalism began long ago
It is the early 1950s. A travelling salesman named Ray Kroc, played in the forthcoming biopic The Founder by Michael Keaton, sells milkshake machines to restaurants all over the Us. Then he discovers an extraordinary little place in California called McDonald’s, run by the McDonald brothers, who have revolutionised the fast-food business with menus limited to burgers, fries and soda, walk-up counters, huge grills and fryers for speedy, short-order volume. In a blinding flash, Kroc sees how the brothers can franchise their operation around the country. They could be an American church, as ubiquitous as decent people’s houses flying the stars’n’stripes. When we saw Ray in his scuzzy hotel room, listening to a self-motivation LP on a portable record player,...

Michael James Delligatti — who ate at least one of his signature creations per week for decades, according to his son — owned a McDonald’s franchise in Uniontown, Pennsylvania and created the Big Mac in 1967 after seeing (or perhaps anticipating) the need for a bigger sandwich on the McDonald’s menu.

Michael "Jim" Delligatti, who made the first Big Mac, died in his home in Pittsburgh Monday night surrounded by family ... according to a McDonald's spokesperson. Delligatti, who owned multiple McDonald's franchises in Pennsylvania, first thought of the Big Mac in the mid-1960s ... when he wanted to offer customers a bigger burger than what Mickey D's was offering at the time.

McDonald’s has finally answered the age old question: does size really matter … when it comes to burgers?
In short, yes it does — and the fast food chain is making this realization its new mission with the announcement of two menu additions that piggyback off the decades-long success of its classic item: the Big Mac.
Much like Burger King has done with the Whopper, McDonald’s will soon unveil two new Big Mac sizes to customers nationwide. The new burgers — aptly named Mac Jr. (made with one 1/6 lb. beef patty) and the Grand Mac (made with two 1/6 lb. beef patties) — sandwich its original,...

Few things define America better than McDonald’s. The cultural icon and hard–to-resist fast food joint’s success is the pinnacle of capitalism, corporate globalisation, and marketing. The director-centric 1970s were a time for pushing the boundaries of 'acceptable' film content, but John Byrum's witty and profane period piece about a Hollywood porn director was a step too far. Hold up. Pretty sure we have been waiting for this day since we were old enough to say "Filet-o-Fish." Brace yourselves, MacDo fans. Your favorite chain is working on a hardcore rewards program for all you loyal Big Mac lovers. It looks like the company has high hopes for the program, meaning you should too. Forbes notes, Mike Andres, President of McDonald's USA said, "We're working on a customer-designed loyalty program that we think will be as good as there is out there in the marketplace." Um, already sold. The article also notes the program should be rolling out either later this year or at the start of 2017. The program looks like it might work on a point system, with...

By the early ‘80s, Roger Corman was firmly entrenched in the public’s eye as The low budget wizard, always cranking out movies like a reliable sausagemeister. However, to the more discerning trash hound, his films were fertile ground for up and coming filmmakers, a place to learn the craft and hopefully develop one’s own style. And while Galaxy of Terror (1981), a crossbreed of Alien with a strand of Forbidden Planet DNA, does boast one James Cameron among the crew, its most notable feat is being highly entertaining regardless of a decimated budget and convoluted plot.
Released in October of ’81 Stateside by New World Pictures/United Artists, and alternately known as Mindwarp: An Infinity of Terror And Planet of Horrors (Hey Rog – pick one!), GoT cost $700,000 Us, and of course made its money back (Corman almost always saw a return). This was right in the middle of Corman’s space mining – before this,...

It’s time to talk remakes again. Our ongoing series continues as we look at a comedy about the devil. Maybe that’s not quite the holiday spirit but we’re doing it anyway. This week, Cinelinx looks at Harold Ramis’ Bedazzled (2000).
Sometimes, it’s the chemistry between the lead actors that makes or breaks a film. When two actors just click, it lifts a film to a whole new level. It’s this on-screen cohesion (or lack thereof) that makes the difference between the two versions of Bedazzled.
The original version was made in England in 1967 and the remake in America in 2000. Both versions of the film follow a similar pot. Each one focuses on an unhappy man--named Stanley (Dudley Moore) in the original and Elliot (Brendan Fraser) in the remake—who is pining for a woman who doesn’t know he’s alive. Stanley/Elliot is approached by...

Tamar Braxton is opening up about the frightening health scare that ended her run on Dancing with the Stars last month.
During The Real on Wednesday, the R&B singer revealed that, in addition to suffering from blood clots in both of her lungs, she also suffers from a condition known as thoracic outlet syndrome that forced her to undergo surgery to have a rib removed.
Braxton, 38, was hospitalized during DWTS in November. Though at first doctors believed she had pneumonia, medical tests soon revealed she was actually suffering from pulmonary embolism, and she subsequently dropped out of the dance...

I’d been a Sega kid in my formative years as a gamer thanks to an ill-advised decision from my parents to buy me a Mega Drive (that’s a Genesis, for you in the colonies) rather than a Snes. Like any true Sega gamer, I used to convince myself that I had the best machine. Mario? Pfft. He was just a fat plumber fighting an angry turtle. Sonic was the man (figuratively). He was radical and gnarly and other embarrassing nineties words. He had kick ass shoes, and he was super fast, and he had to fight a crazy moustachio’d scientist to save the animals. And we were all about nature in the early nineties. That’s where Captain Planet and Earth Song came from. Sonic the Hedgehog rocked my socks.
Except Sonic the Hedgehog was, for lack of a better word, shit, and I’d been kidding myself the whole time.

Maybe a Big Mac ... depends on how much he drank. Watch, you can feel Sam's disappointment when...

Look, when it comes to our favorite fast food that's terrible for us, you could tell us it was made out of gasoline, Donald Trump's arm hair and the tears of old people crying over the movie Up and that still wouldn't stop us from eating it. When you love something, you love it blindly, you know? So if you are a Big Mac devotee, then all this info probably won't change how you feel about it. And we promise we're not trying to put you off McDonald's iconic menu item. However, the info presented is interesting and sort of scary, so we're just passing it along. Do with it what you will. Fast Food Menu Price researched the ingredients of a Big Mac and has come up with an infographic that...

A fond look-back at Sir Terry Pratchett's children's series, Only You Can Save Mankind, Johnny And The Dead, and Johnny And The Bomb...
It might sound odd to combine the words ‘underappreciated’ and ‘Terry Pratchett’ and ‘wigwam’, but that’s partly because that third word doesn’t need to be there. Relatively speaking, there are less appreciated works among the many, many gems of Pratchett’s output. Still, there’s love out there for them, and we aim to reflect that here.
In the lower reaches of the Goodreads list of Pratchett books, besides the short stories and essays in anthologies, the first novel to stand out is Only You Can Save Mankind, the first of Pratchett’s Johnny Maxwell series. It was published in 1992. It is a very 1992 book (One of the characters asks ‘Is it rad to say cool?’), and realistic swearing is not a feature. Compared...

While Jennifer Aniston once equated eating a Big Mac to "putting gasoline in a purified system," this skinny model has no problem scarfing down 20 McDonald's cheeseburgers. Nela Zisser, a New Zealand model and beauty queen, uploaded a video of herself to YouTube over the weekend, which sees the blond stunner take on the eating challenge, going head to head against Erik TheElectric, a fellow YouTuber and competitive eater. "Erik and I decided it would be an awesome idea to make a collaboration video where we both eat 20 Mcdonald's Cheeseburgers!" Zisser wrote of the clip. "This was a lot of food and was seriously not easy, I ate the first 5 in 1:32 and I had finished...

It’s every burger lover’s dream come true. On Wednesday, Aug. 26, Burger King extended a temporary olive branch to longtime rival McDonald’s in full-page ads that ran in The New York Times and The Chicago Tribune. The modest proposal? That the two fast-food titans come together to create the McWhopper. The newly imagined food item would, in theory, fuse two of America’s best-known burgers from each of the two chains — McDonald’s Big Mac and Burger King’s Whopper — by combining ingredients from each iconic burger. The unusual [...]...

McDonald's would lead you to believe there isn't really a secret menu, but according to an anonymous manager who spilled a lot of secrets during a reddit Ask Me Anything (Ama) session, that's not entirely true. While McDonald's position is that there isn't an official secret menu, it is true that customers can have special orders and alterations. Whether or not those special meals actually get made depends on the employees. The manager who answered questions during the Ama confirmed that you can "add, remove or change ingredients by special request." Those are called "grill orders," they added. Like when you order no lettuce or no pickles on a Big Mac. "The items on...

It's been a rough few weeks for Donald Trump after the presidential hopeful made disparaging remarks about Mexican immigrants: First, Univision, NBC, Macy's and Espn all cut ties with the real estate mogul, and now even The Simpsons is razzing Trump. In "Trumptastic Voyage," a nod to the human body-exploring sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage, Homer is shrunk down to follicle size and forced to brave the wilderness that is Trump's "hair."
At the beginning of the short, Homer is tricked into supporting Trump's presidency for $50. But after accidentally getting too close to the ex-Apprentice host,...
