For more than 60 years, Bob Mackie has reigned as the over-the-top couturier for Hollywood’s elite. After gaining attention as the costumer for The Carol Burnett Show, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and Cher’s solo variety show, the designer became the go-to choice for divas like Judy Garland, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Elton John, and created clothes for 60 Barbies. In the process he won an impressive nine Emmys, a Tony and a Cfda lifetime achievement award, plus three Oscar nominations.
Now with a long-awaited documentary devoted to his life in showbiz, Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion, arriving this summer (a distribution deal has not yet been finalized), the so-called Sultan of Sequins, Rajah of Rhinestones and Guru of Glitter seems to be having yet another major moment, with his archival pieces worn today by the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy and Zendaya.
“It’s kind of weird,” the 85-year-old designer tells THR.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
Ten weeks deep and “Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia is still processing the success of his shimmering spring TV hit.
“I certainly live in an echo chamber on social media, so I’m seeing lots of ways in which it infiltrated culture,” the executive producer told IndieWire. “But I felt like we really crossed over when I saw that Ramona Singer from ‘Real Housewives’ was dressed for a ‘Palm Royale’-themed cocktail party. That’s when I went, ‘Uh-oh, something has changed here. Something has shifted.'”

What celebrities wear to awards shows is, at this point, pretty predicable. The protocol of Hollywood legacy demands they dress at least relatively tame.
But fashion people going to an awards show where they’re the celebs? There are no decorum dictates there! From gowns to shorts, heels to moto boots, fur to chiffon, minis to maxis, trad plaids to 3D florals, it was all on show at The Daily Front Row’s Eighth Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards on Sunday night at the Beverly Hills Hotel — on ladies and gentlemen.
At this awards show — where honorees included the legendary Bob Mackie, A-list hairstylist Adir Abergel, makeup artist Rachel Goodwin, models Elsa Hosk and Amelia Gray, and The Hollywood Reporter co-editor-in-chief Maer Roshan — the dress code “anything goes” is an understatement.

Amelia Gray may have been named model of the year at The Daily Front Row’s eighth annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards on Sunday, but she’s certainly thinking beyond the catwalk.
Gray tells me she’ll probably try following in the acting footsteps of her parents, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin… eventually
“It is in my blood, but I have a lot more boxes to check,” she said on the red carpet. “I’m a firm believer in, focus on one thing, finish that and then start the next book once you finish the first one. We’re not even halfway done finishing the first book. We’ve got a lot more to do.”
The evening, which was hosted by comedian Celeste Barber at the Beverly Hills Hotel, also honored Adir Abergel (Hair Stylist of the Year), Anastasia Soare (Beauty Innovator of the Year), Brett Alan Nelson (Music Stylist...

Few people better capture the sublimity and silliness of today’s red carpet spectacle than the artist Angelica Hicks.
The 31-year-old Brooklyn-based Brit started her career as a cheeky illustrator, making a name for herself with fashion drawings that featured winking wordplay, like a model wearing Ysl logo earrings with the caption “Yves Dropping.” (Get it?)
But one day, on a whim, she took to Instagram to replicate a runway look she saw by cutting a hole in a shopping bag and wearing it as a squared-off top. Her ingenuity garnered enthusiastic online praise, so she continued, duplicating a model in a ruffled blouse and cloche hat using crumpled tissues and a mixing bowl. “The humor is in approximating the look as closely as possible,” Hick says. “So it’s this perfectionism mixed with the absurd and a little English deadpan.”
Just a few years later, Hicks now has a...

With more than 70 schools offering costume design instruction, what makes such a program stand out? Is it the proximity to film studios and theaters in the major entertainment hubs of L.A., London and New York? The variety of courses, from historical design to 3D fabric printing, or simply a well-rounded curriculum? Or is it the chance to network with award-winning alums and industry insiders, coupled with portfolio development and postgrad job placement?

Actor Pam Dawber starred alongside Robin Williams in the popular 1970s television series Mork & Mindy. Although the show thrived in the beginning, Dawber felt preventable mistakes were made in the series that caused it to lose quality.

Dawber and Williams were once famously known for the hit show Mork & Mindy. The classic sitcom followed an alien by the name of Mork navigating his way through Earth. Through circumstances, he becomes close with the human character Mindy, portrayed by Dawber. The series may have had a big impact, expanding both Dawber’s and Williams’ careers, but it only ran for four seasons.
The show experienced a steep ratings decline at the end of its run, which contributed to its cancellation. Fans have speculated that its increasingly bizarre storylines began to turn off viewers.

An upswing in Grammy broadcast ratings and the power of stars in social media each played an integral role in the Red Carpet Power Rankings just released by Launchmetrics and The Hollywood Reporter, with Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Maluma among the music artists scoring big bucks in earned exposure for the high-end brands they wore at the Feb. 4 event at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena.
Cyrus and Swift won two Grammys apiece — for record of the year and best pop solo performance, and for album of the year and best pop vocal album, respectively — while they also proved to be winners on the red carpet, earning millions in brand exposure for sporting looks that quickly caused a social media frenzy.

If they gave out a Grammy for Best Costume Change, than Miley Cyrus would be taking home a third award after her incredible showing at the 2024 Grammys on Sunday (January 4).

She wore a sequined black jumpsuit with a keyhole cutout in the front while accepting her very first Grammy from Mariah Carey. Miley pulled off another quick change, sliding into a shimmering silver mini-dress that featured a fringed hem and pops of teal, purple and magenta to perform her chart-topping single “Flowers.”
That’s already three looks, but Miley was just getting warmed up.

Continuing the naked dress look favored by red-carpet stars in the last year, Miley Cyrus made a major impression on the red carpet for the 2024 Grammys.
The “Flowers” and “Used to Be Young” singer, nominated for six 2024 Grammy Awards, arrived for the show at downtown Los Angeles’ Crypto.com arena wearing a see-through, net-like dress made of 14,000 gold safety pins. Arranged geometrically, the pins created a sort of cone bra effect of two circles up top as well as a thong-like shape below. The look is a custom creation by designer John Galliano for Maison Margiela, the once-cancelled, now-resurgent fashion genius who is the subject of an upcoming documentary, High & Low, debuting in March. His recent Maison Margiela couture show has been a subject of fascination ever since it was presented on Jan. 25, from its decadent Parisian looks to the porcelain-doll makeup created by Pat McGrath.

From Mary Tyler Moore’s black capri pants to the waist-cinching corsets on Bridgerton, the costumes on television’s hottest shows over the past 70-plus years have influenced what we wear more than viewers may realize. That’s the premise of Hal Rubenstein’s just-released book, which is sure to spawn an escapist deep dive by even the most casual TV fan.
Dressing the Part: Television’s Most Stylish Shows (Harper, $36) explores the costume design of 50 high-profile TV series, from I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show in the 1950s, to Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and others. Shawna Trpcic, an Emmy-nominated costume designer best known for her work on several Star Wars series on Disney+ and her collaborations with Joss Whedon, died October 4, her agency Gersh and Lucasfilm confirmed. She was 56. A cause of death was not provided but Trpcic’s passing was unexpected; as recently as three days ago she was chronicling a desert trip on Instagram.
Born in Artesia, CA, Trpcic was always into science fiction and comic books. She attended Otis College of Art and Design for fashion where, in her senior year, she worked on Bob Mackie’s team.
Trpcic got her start illustrating for Albert Wolsky on the Oscar-winning film Bugsy and then became his assistant on Barry Levinson’s film Toys. She has build an impressive body of work since, becoming one of Hollywood’s pre-eminent science fiction costume designers. Trpcic described costume design as “creating fine art for the body...

Although the Emmy Award for Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special has not gone to a retrospective program of any kind since the category was established in 2018, several such winners were crowned over the preceding decades when all variety specials competed for the same prize. This year’s pre-recorded program lineup happens to include two televised celebrations of industry legends, one of which – “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” – is heavily favored to become the first special of its kind to achieve this exact honor.
The other commemorative special that could block the Burnett one’s path to victory is “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter.” Based on the untested nature of their format, both will have to watch out for every one of their fellow nominees, which include “Lizzo: Live in Concert” and Netflix stand-up specials starring John Mulaney, Trevor Noah, and Wanda Sykes.

At the 1959 American International Toy Fair in New York, an 11.5-inch plastic ingénue with improbably bombshell proportions made her debut. In her earliest iteration, Barbie was marketed as a “Teen Age Fashion Model” and was based on the German Bild Lilli doll that Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler had seen during her travels to Europe.
At the time, Bob Mackie was studying costume design at the since-closed Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles’ Westlake neighborhood. He would go on to a legendary career in fashion and entertainment, but already his eye for the female form was well defined. When he first saw Barbie, he was not impressed.
“I didn’t think she was very fashionable,” he says of the doll, who originally sported a simple black-and-white Chevron swimsuit, hoop earrings and a perky blond ponytail.

While her sister Halle has been kept in the bright spotlight recently, Chloe Bailey, 24, has taken a step forward to share it.
On Monday night, one-half of the Chloe X Halle duo headlined the “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom” concert. The event took place at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.
Chloe performed “What’s Love Got To Do With It” in honor of the late Tina Turner. The 24-year-old wore a tattered shimmering red dress, similar to Turner’s 1978 flame dress designed by Bob Mackie. Turner died of natural causes last month.
Others in attendance were Vice President Kamala Harris and performers Charlie Wilson, Nelly, Miguel, Kirk Franklin, Swv, Davido, Coi Leray and Jodeci.

Beyoncé found a special way to mark Juneteenth.
The singer took to the stage at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena for her “Renaissance World Tour” show on Sunday night, before telling fans that everything she’d worn “was created exclusively by Black designers.”
Bey shared an array of stunning snaps showing herself wearing a rhinestone-covered red gown. She didn’t name the designers.

Though she had already begun documenting her meteoric 2019 breakout when Live Nation asked her about becoming the subject of a documentary, pop-rap superstar Lizzo said, “We didn’t really know what it was gonna be about. I was afraid it would be boring.” Three years, two Grammy-winning albums, and one historic, Emmy-winning reality competition series later, her Max film “Love, Lizzo” proved that her life has been anything but.
Looking cozy on a long brown leather sofa inside a Burbank recording studio, wearing an all-black Yitty ensemble she had previewed on Instagram an hour before the interview, Lizzo told IndieWire that the original concept for her documentary was to take the footage they had of her planning her 2019 Coachella and VMAs sets (a process that inspired her Prime Video series “Watch Out For The Big Grrls“) and bring in director Doug Pray (“Hype!”) to help tell her origin story, and...

I can't quite believe it, even as I write these words. But at age 83, after a years-long battle with intestinal cancer, Tina Turner has died. Michael, Prince, Bowie, Madonna, Mick Jagger -- Turner belonged to an ultra-rarified group of rock and pop gods that's growing smaller as time marches onward, and shows few signs of being replenished by the current music landscape. Arguably the greatest live performer of the 20th century, Tina Turner's long and storied career was marked by meteoric rises, catastrophic falls, and stunning reinventions. She did as much to invent modern rock and roll as Buddy Holly and Little Richard, and still gets half the credit.
Turner released an autobiography in 1986 called "I, Tina." She was only halfway into her career, but had just staged its most important chapter: the zeitgeist-seizing, don't-call-it-a-comeback album of the century, "Private Dancer." The album changed everything for Turner. It completely re-energized her career,...

While I was growing up back in the days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, there wasn’t a ton of debate over who the funniest women in show business were. It was Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, usually (but not always) in that order. Lucy was the First Lady of Television, and Carol was the dame who seemingly could do anything on a stage. She could sing, she could dance, she could tell jokes, she could wear crazy outfits with uncommon flair. It didn’t even matter if she sang or danced well, because performing something poorly would simply make her the butt of the joke – and no one could do that better than her.
I attended Hollywood High School and was always proud that it was also Burnett’s alma mater. She took out a full-page ad annually in the yearbook congratulating that year’s senior class. It...

As Carol Burnett turns 90, she bristles at the idea of looking back at her legacy. She’s not one to watch old episodes of her iconic “The Carol Burnett Show,” for example. “I’m not like Norma Desmond,” she quips, referring to the fading star in “Sunset Boulevard.” “The only time I do it is if I have to for a reason.”
In this case, NBC gave her a good one. The network is set to air “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” on April 26, and the special features both new performances and clips from Burnett’s storied career. And it gave Burnett a chance to reminisce with old friends — and new.
“It’s exactly what I wanted,” Burnett said. “I didn’t want a birthday party with cake and balloons and confetti and all of that. What I wanted was to have an entertaining show. And that’s what we got.

Though airing on Wednesday, the special was taped in early March, where Burnett expressed her thrill at celebrating her birthday in this way.

So, did you ever wonder why Carol Burnett always tugs her ear? It was a way she could say “hi” to her beloved grandmother. The first time she did it was when she made her TV debut at 22 on the Dec. 17, 1955 episode of the popular “The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show.” She played the girlfriend of the woody dummy. “The first song I sang on TV was ‘Over the Rainbow’ to Jerry Mahoney,” she noted in a 2016 L.A. Times interview with me. “I remember I called my grandmother to tell her I was going to be on television. Nanny said say hello to me. That’s when we came up with pulling my ear.”
Nearly seven decades later, Burnett is still tugging at her ear, singing and making people laugh And on April 26th, which is her 90th birthday, NBC is throwing her a celebration “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.

Exclusive: A ban on drag performances in public places has been enacted in Tennessee, and more than a dozen other states may follow suit, a movement predicated on the fear that children who might glimpse such a show would be scarred by it. But an upcoming documentary defies that demonization by portraying drag performers as a force for good in their community.
Emmy-winning media company World of Wonder and Gatekeeper Productions today announced they have wrapped production on The Little Pageant That Could, a feature documentary that chronicles the journey of L.A.’s Best in Drag Show to support the Alliance for Housing and Healing.

There are times when you look back at pop culture phenomena and can’t resist the urge to ask: Can you believe this actually happened? Tackling a notorious fiasco in one of the galaxy’s most popular franchises, Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak’s amusing and exhaustive documentary ”A Disturbance in the Force” unpacks 1978’s “Star Wars Holiday Special.”
You don’t have to be an obsessive “Star Wars” fan to enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at how the special — which premiered Nov. 17, 1978 on CBS, and has never been re-run on any broadcast or cable outlet — came to exist. To be sure, the fans will appreciate it a lot more than casual viewers. For the aspiring costume designer who dreams of creating looks for film, television, theater and concert stages, the journey typically starts with the right school, where a host of considerations awaits. Classroom size, location, specialized classes, participation in theater programs, job placement, networking with alums and, most important, tuition are all part of the equation. As schools meet the demands and technology of an ever-changing entertainment landscape, nothing tops a good education.
To create its annual top 10 list of costume design schools, The Hollywood Reporter consulted with costume designers and academics, looking at the critical factors — including class size, reputation and alumni success — that help make each school unique.

Margie Duncan, a dancer and actress who stood in for her dear friend Debbie Reynolds in films including The Unsinkable Molly Brown, The Second Time Around and The Singing Nun, has died. She was 92.
Duncan died Jan. 3 after a brief illness at her Porter Ranch home in Los Angeles, her family announced.
Duncan worked with choreographers in the movies to learn Reynolds’ routines, “dancing in” during blocking and rehearsals until the numbers were set. She would then teach the routines to her friend.
In the musical comedy The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964), for which Reynolds received her lone Oscar nomination, Duncan rehearsed the number “Ain’t Down Yet,” which took place in the barnyard of Molly’s (Reynolds) country home, with choreographer Peter Gennaro.
Duncan jumped on the top of a shed to sing the last verse while walking backward down its thatched roof and then back up, finishing at the front of the roof.

The entertainer was decked out in a head-turning ensemble inspired by one of Taron Egerton’s looks from Rocketman, John’s 2019 biopic. It featured a flame-embroidered yellow-orange Lycra jumpsuit topped by a rhinestone cap with orange and black horns and a giant pair of wings with red, black and orange feathers that stretched nearly three feet over her head.

“Donald Trump” made an unexpected cameo in Disney+’s live broadcast of Elton John’s U.S. farewell concert — but the ex-president’s name popped up in the closed captions due to a technical glitch at the streaming service’s external vendor, not because a hack or an employee going rogue.
Some Disney+ viewers watching “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium,” the artist’s final North American concert on Sunday, spotted errant “Donald Trump” text in the closed captions at a few points in the livestream, according to posts on social media.
Disney will be firing someone. They snuck Donald Trump into the closed captioning of the Elton John Live concert for about 30 seconds and then started to delete it. #DisneyPlus pic.twitter.com/rJu156hEG2
