- His career began at age 14, when he was a copy boy on Fleet Street. That eventually led to a job as a cub reporter at the London bureau of the Chicago Tribune. He relocated to Canada , and was hired by the CBC to do rewrites. He was editor of Newsmagazine, CBC's first live news-documentary program. He became a Far East correspondent in 1961 and then a London correspondent. He was the first TV journalist from the West to report from North Vietnam; his reports were used on many U.S. networks, and his columns were syndicated by The New York Times.
