A few years before directing Dracula and Freaks, Tod Browning made a silent horror film titled London After Midnight. Starring Lon Chaney as “The Hypnotist,” the 65-minute film was distributed by MGM in December of 1927; though audiences saw it upon release, it’s likely that everyone who did is no longer with us. Sadly, the last known copy was destroyed in the infamous MGM vault fire of 1967, which tragically resulted in the loss of many classic films.
We may never lay eyes on Tod Browning’s London After Midnight, but those who’ve been salivating to experience it may be excited to hear that a full-cast audio drama is on the way.
Scripted Audio Drama producers Lance Roger Axt, Jack Bowman and Kenton Hall have meticulously adapted the original screenplay by Waldemar Young and Tod Browning as an immersive Dolby Atmos aural experience, with the recording taking place over two...

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The Little Mermaid is swimming laps around the competition at the Memorial Day weekend box office.
Disney’s live-action remake of the iconic animated film is headed for an estimated four-day domestic debut of $118.6 million, the holiday’s fifth-biggest opening of all time, according to final weekend actuals. The three-day gross is an estimated $96 million-plus. (On Saturday, the film looked to earn north of $120 million over the long holiday weekend, but domestic estimates shifted.)
Overseas, Little Mermaid started off with a disappointing $68.1 million from 51 markets for a projected global launch of $186.7 million through Monday. The pic drowned in China, opening to just $2.5 million. Box office pundits say the social media campaign protesting a Black actress being cast as Ariel could be having an impact in Asian markets and elsewhere.

The Little Mermaid grossed $10.3 million in previews at the North American box office as the long Memorial Day weekend commenced.
That’s one of the best showings ever for screenings before the holiday weekend. Little Mermaid‘s tally includes $850,000 in grosses from special screenings Wednesday; the rest is from traditional Thursday evening screenings.
Overall, Little Mermaid ranks No. 7 on the list of top preview grosses for pics rated G or PG.
Rob Marshall directs the live-action remake of Disney’s beloved animated film. The new Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, the spirited young mermaid who makes a dangerous deal with the evil sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) in order to experience life on land and meet the dashing Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King). The pact, however, poses great risk to her father’s watery kingdom.
The cast also includes Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Javier Bardem, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni and Art Malik.

As I mentioned last week, nostalgia appears to be playing a big role in this just-started cinema Summer season. The remake of that 1990s buddy comedy may just be the tip of the iceberg. For this holiday weekend’s big, really big as Ed Sullivan would say, movie release, go back just two or three more years to 1989. That year may be best known for the Batman box office blockbuster, but it’s also a watershed moment for feature Animation, particularly at the “Mouse House”. Disney feature animation was just beginning to snap out of a creative stupor as the modest successes of The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company began to offset the losses of the fantasy debacle The Black Cauldron. This is all covered in the superb documentary feature Waking Sleeping Beauty. And then two Broadway “whiz-kids,” thought that the company should return to classic fairy tales with a Tony-worthy musical score.

The Little Mermaid is expected to swim to $120 million in its four-day domestic box office debut, making it one of the better Memorial Day weekend openings and marking the first 2023 summer tentpole targeting females.
Overseas, the movie is tracking for an $80 million opening through Sunday.

Disney’s attempts to reinvent their animated classics as live action versions has proven to be largely a smart boxoffice play, but one with a mixed creative result. Certainly some were huge hits like Bill Condon’s Beauty And The Beast and Guy Ritchie’s less enchanting Aladdin. Others effectively created photo-real animals in The Lion King and The Jungle Book. Older Disney staples have gotten the treatment by focusing on the villains in Cruella and Maleficent and their sequels, even an unfortunate Disney + attempt on the untouchable (if you ask me) Lady And The Tramp. But even approaching an animated masterpiece, 1989’s The Little Mermaid and essentially trying to make a splashy (sorry) big screen live action musical that works above and under the water seems dicey on paper. So what do you do? Bring in Rob Marshall, and as it turns out that is all the new live action The Little Mermaid needed.

It’s been a tough time in Hollywood and beyond as the Writers Guild strike shut down production of just about every kind of entertainment — and lots of parties and events, too. Canceled/postponed celebrations included the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the 49th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award: A Tribute to Nicole Kidman, the Critics Choice Inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television and many others.
But music festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival marked the early beginning of summer fest season and Netflix helped launch Pride Month early with a huge “All Out” celebration in West Hollywood. Meanwhile, “The Little Mermaid” swam into Hollywood for a lavish premiere and SeriesFest: Chapter 9 took over Denver. So all is not lost in the world of Parties & Premieres, but we sure hope that Hollywood writers get the raises they deserve and go back to work very soon.

When the trailer for the live-action film was released, reactions to Bailey as Ariel became a trend on social media. For Bailey, the cultural impact the film will have on the young people of color is important and something that she experienced growing up.

Disney‘s live-action The Little Mermaid is swimming toward Memorial Day Weekend with a song in its heart and dollar signs in its eyes. The latest version of the Disney animated classic is tracking toward a $110M 4-day opening. That number puts The Little Mermaid in the top eight spots for a Memorial Day Weekend release. The upcoming musical won’t touch Top Gun: Maverick’s $160.5M Memorial Day start, but $110M is an outstanding total nonetheless.
Disney has a history of releasing films on Memorial Day Weekend, including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which earned $153M, the studio’s highest total for the 4-day holiday debut. Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin earned $116.8M in 2019, placing the Guy Ritchie-directed fantasy film slightly above The Little Mermaid’s expected launch.

Disney‘s CinemaCon panel is underway, with new footage from The Little Mermaid dazzling event guests. During The Little Mermaid presentation, Melissa McCarthy, who plays the villain, Ursula, took the stage. She introduced her iconic musical number, “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” from the upcoming film. JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray is our boots on the ground at CinemaCon this week. He says the song gives off a burlesque vibe, with McCarthy having a great time strutting her stuff.
Unfortunately, Chris also says the lighting of the film is poor. It’s worth noting the preview is screening in Dolby Vision, so there’s little excuse for the clip to look as dark as it does. Still, Chris says the cast looks good, and Halle Bailey could win audiences over with her outstanding performance. Overall, the film seems faithful to the animated original, even if aspects of the plot and music will change for the new version.

The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy. The film stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel; Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric; Tony Award® winner Daveed Diggs...

The video features new clips from the live-action adaptation along with interviews with director Rob Marshall, Melissa McCarthy (“Ursula”), Awkwafina (the voice of “Scuttle”), Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The film also features Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home) as Prince Eric, Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as the voice of Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay (Luca) voices Flounder. Noma Dumezweni (Mary Poppins Returns) is Queen Selina, Art Malik (Homeland) is Sir Grimsby, and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) plays King Triton.
Oscar nominee Rob Marshall (Chicago) directed from a screenplay by two-time Oscar nominee David Magee.

Disney’s live-action take on The Little Mermaid has been cleared for theatrical release in China, as has Fast X — the penultimate installment in Universal’s long-running Fast & Furious action franchise. Dates are still to be set for both films in the market which has increasingly been handing out day-and-date releases for Hollywood titles even if audiences have been somewhat tepid of late. Hope springs.
The Little Mermaid, directed by Rob Marshall and starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, begins overseas rollout on May 24 and swims to North America on May 26.
Fast X, from director Louis Leterrier, goes a week earlier with international play revving up on May 17 and the U.S. and Canada joining on May 19. The Fast movies have been major attractions in China with the franchise (including Hobbs & Shaw) grossing over $1.2B since Fast & Furious 6 in 2013. When it comes to classic comedy-thrillers, few films stand out as much as True Lies (1994). This iconic film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis captivated the audience with its action-packed scenes, hilarious moments, and a romantic story line.
Set in the late 1990s, True Lies tells the story of Harry Tasker (Schwarzenegger), an international spy who is keeping his job a secret from his wife Helen (Curtis). When she finds out the truth, their marriage is put in jeopardy. As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, Harry must also take on an international terrorist organization planning to use nuclear weapons against the US.
True Lies is full of exciting action sequences and was nominated for three Academy Awards. It’s an entertaining movie that will have you laughing and on the edge of your seat at times. If you enjoy action films with a side of comedy,...

For Halle Bailey, starring as Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" isn't just another box to check off her list of accomplishments - it's much bigger than that. The 22-year-old is making history as the first Black actor to play Ariel and the second to be crowned a Disney princess with her role in the forthcoming live-action film. She's well aware of the responsibility that comes with that.
"It's about time that a role like this is played by a Black woman, by somebody who is just a part of this beautiful community. We deserve to have images that look like us and to see ourselves in the media on big screens and everything," Bailey tells Popsugar. "So I'm just grateful that we're getting to see ourselves finally on such big projects."

Disney’s two-minute trailer for the live-action The Little Mermaid debuted during the 2023 Oscars. The new Ariel and Ursula – Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy – took the stage and introduced the trailer, which was sort of bizarre given that it felt like part of the show rather than a commercial. Weird introduction aside, the trailer’s packed with clips reminiscent of the classic animated film and features Bailey singing “Part of Your World.”
The trailer arrived online following its Oscar debut, along with a new poster and photos.
Joining Bailey and McCarthy in the live-action reimagining are Jonah Hauer-King (A Dog’s Way Home) as Prince Eric, Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as the voice of Sebastian, Awkwafina (Raya and the Last Dragon) as the voice of Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay (Luca) voices Flounder. "The Little Mermaid" is largely credited as one of the movies that launched Disney into its infamous Renaissance Era, so it's probably no surprise that the studio has decided to revisit it in a big way. Its live-action remake, starring Grammy-nominated singer Halle Bailey, is on its way, and we've got the first true look at the Rob Marshall-helmed film.
Much of what we see in this trailer looks familiar if you've watched the original 1989 film, only adapted to a live-action medium. However, we did get plenty of new footage in this new trailer that is sure to entice fans. We got to see Ariel (Bailey) explore the film's version of Atlantica, see other characters such as the charming Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), and, unfortunately for her, see her get brought into the clutches of the conniving Ursula (Melissa McCarthy). Speaking of which, Ursula in live-action looks and sounds great so far,...

Disney is excited to make a new poster for The Little Mermaid part of your world ahead of a full trailer drop during the Oscars this Sunday, March 12, 2023. The Little Mermaid poster depicts Halle Bailey’s Ariel perched on a rock in the middle of the ocean, dreaming of life above sea level. With her eyes closed, Ariel imagines a world where people dance on two feet, breathe the open air, and settle down in villages after falling in love. A sun burns brightly behind a clouded sky, foreshadowing Ursula’s arrival and dishonest dealings. The Little Mermaid poster is beautiful, though it would have been nice for Disney to let some of the light in.

At the end of the trailer, we get our first look at Melissa McCarthy as the evil sea witch Ursula. In the promo, Ursula belts out an insidious cackle while her tentacles obscure the bottom portion of her face.
