Over 600 people have competed on Survivor since the first season aired in 2000. Some have been more memorable than others, and there’s no doubt that one of the CBS reality show’s first stars was Colby Donaldson. But even though Colby helped Survivor reel in plenty of viewers with his good looks and Southern charm, the contestant also cost the show $100,000.

Survivor fans first met Colby Donaldson as a contestant on Survivor: The Australian Outback, the show’s second season. It premiered on Jan. 28, 2001, following the Super Bowl, and fans were immediately drawn to Colby. He was his tribe’s leader and a good ole Southern boy (even his luxury item was the Texas flag).

Heads up, “Survivor” fans: two of the best seasons of all time — “Heroes vs. Villains” and “Cagayan” — are now streaming on Netflix. It’s a first for the blockbuster streaming site, which officially made available these two installments of CBS’s reality TV show on November 15. While there is still no official word on when the program can resume production in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, all 40 seasons will continue to stream on CBS All Access, with Jeff Probst serving as host.
Netflix viewers, if you haven’t yet seen “Heroes vs. Villains” (Season 20) or “Cagayan” (Season 28), be warned that this article contains spoilers for both of these iconic editions. Read at your own risk!

While “Survivor” fans patiently await news on when Season 41 might eventually premiere (the latest rumor has it airing in Spring 2021), there is some good news on the horizon as reruns of CBS’s reality TV show are coming to Netflix. Mark your calendars for November 15, as that’s when the series will start streaming on the platform for the first time, according to Netflix Queue. However, there’s a massive catch as Netflix has only acquired two cycles: “Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains” (Season 20) and “Survivor: Cagayan — Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty” (Season 28). Of course, all 40 seasons will continue to stream on CBS All Access.

It’s no surprise that when the social experiment of “Survivor” began in 2000 that it would produce some of reality TV’s sexiest flings ever. When Colleen and Greg began flirting on season 1 it was a bit of a surprise to viewers, but now the terms “showmance” and “power couple” are as common as “immunity challenge” and “tribal council.” Over the course of 40 seasons in 20 years, contestants have put aside bad breath, limbs scarred from bug bites and their saggy, dirty swimsuits in order to find each other attractive enough to, yes, fall in love. In our photo gallery above, we detail 10 of the most iconic showmances in “Survivor” history.

“Survivor” can be one of the most entertaining shows on television, an adventure on a deserted island where strangers out-maneuver each other and compete in fun challenges. It can also be immensely uncomfortable when the illusion of the game fades away and real-life implications come into play. Above you can scroll through our photos of the 12 most disturbing moments in “Survivor” history, ranked from uncomfortable to ugly.
The safety of the “Survivor” castaways is always of grave importance, which is what makes the show’s medical evacuations so unfortunate to watch. Some, like Michael Skupin in “The Australian Outback,” have an accident, falling in the fire and requiring medical attention. Others push themselves to the brink, like Russell Swan in “Samoa” and Caleb Reynolds in “Kaoh Rong.” These are the worst kinds of “Survivor” exits, and while there can be compelling drama in seeing a castaway push themselves, it’s...

This week on “Survivor,” a contestant (Dan Spilo) was removed from the game for the first time ever due to an off-camera “incident” involving sexual misconduct. (See host Jeff Probst‘s response.) The shocking development reminds us of the last time something like this happened on CBS’s reality TV show. The year was 2004. The season, “All-Stars.” In the fifth episode, the players competed in an immunity challenge that required them to brush up against each other as they ran across a balance beam. A problem arose when Richard Hatch, who was voluntarily naked (as he often was on the island) flaunted his body against Sue Hawk. Watch the incident below.
At first Hawk seemed to laugh it off, but when she got back to camp she couldn’t get that moment out of her mind. “I just kept reliving the incident. It just kept eating into me more and more like a cancer,...

“The Amazing Race” fans are about to be introduced to one of the greatest reality TV heroes of all time: Rupert Boneham. Longtime “Survivor” viewers are already keenly aware of this tie-dye pirate from his four seasons starring on that CBS hit. Though he never claimed victory as the winner of “Survivor,” he did take home a special fan-voted prize of $1 million during 2004’s “America’s Tribal Council.” He’s that beloved.
In the upcoming 31st season of “The Amazing Race,” which will now debut April 17 on CBS, Rupert will be teamed up with his wife Laura Boneham, who previously competed against Rupert on “Survivor: Blood vs. Water” in 2013. Laura finished in 12th place that season, far outlasting her husband as he was the first person voted out of what turned out to be his fourth and final run on the show.

During Wednesday’s tribe swap episode of “Survivor: Edge of Extinction,” the seemingly impossible happened when 15 people grabbed new buffs at random and 14 of them ended up with their old tribe mates. Wendy Diaz was the only person to find herself at a camp full of fresh faces. While Wendy chose to look at this as a positive, there’s no denying the fact that strategically she was now on thin ice. The good news for Wendy is that the same thing happened to Amber Brkich 30 seasons ago on “Survivor: All Stars” … and she won.
After the dust settled on the season’s first tribe swap, Wendy found herself at her old Manu camp along with four old Kama players: Aubry Bracco, Victoria Baamonde, Gavin Whitson and Eric Hafemann. Host Jeff Probst blatantly told Wendy, “If ‘Survivor’ is a game of numbers and these four are tight, you would be in trouble.

With 13 options to choose from over the 37 seasons of “Survivor,” 28% of fans who voted in our recent poll have decided that Coby Archa from Season 10 is the biggest threat to be eliminated at merge of all time. In “Survivor: Palau,” Coby’s original tribe Koror won eight of the season’s first nine immunity challenges, resulting in a eight-to-one majority at the time of the merge. Despite those unprecedented numbers, Coby’s own tribe voted him out before Ulong’s Stephenie Lagrossa because of his tendency to spill tribal secrets.
What Coby’s victory in the poll shows is something that is still true of “Survivor” game play: being among the majority alliance/tribe does not grant you 100% protection. In fact, being at the bottom of a powerful alliance can sometimes leave you vulnerable and/or make you a huge threat. Large alliances will get eager to vote out their...

The results of a CBS.com poll of "Survivor" fans are now on newsstands, as part of a special commemorative issue of CBS Watch! magazine. The 100-page, full-color magazine is a pretty great overview of the series, except for the absolute wrongness of its polls. That's especially true for its "all time best seasons" poll. Yes, ranking "Survivor" seasons is about as difficult as stacking cooked spaghetti noodles, and about as useful. It's mostly good for creating disagreement. What one viewer values, another dismisses--but that's one of the many reasons why the series has survived for 30 seasons. There's a lot to argue about. Even looking at objective data about Survivor winners and cast members can prompt discussion. So, here are the results of CBS' poll, and one fan's thoughts and arguments about why the other fans' collective wisdom often seems screwed up. #1: Survivor Heroes vs. Villains, season 20, 2010 Why this...

In 2012, Colton Cumbie was one of the biggest villains Survivor had ever seen. Often dismissive to his fellow tribe mates, he made bigoted and cruel remarks throughout the show before being medically evacuated with symptoms of appendicitis. (Or so we thought. Host Jeff Probst now claims that Cumbie was faking his illness and simply wanted to quit.)
Returning to play Survivor: Blood vs. Water, Cumbie made it to Day 7 before quitting the game, bursting into tears and saying, "I don't want to be here." A visibly angry Probst told Cumbie, 22, that he was being "selfish" before allowing him to leave Survivor forever.

Yeah, I'm still looking at Major Crimes and thinking,
"President Roslin's solving crime! With Hugh of the Borg!"
Yiiikes, with the Olympics out of the way, there's a whole lot of TV. I'm still figuring out how my DVR is going to catch all of it.

Former General Hospital star Greg Vaughan is headed to Salem. Vaughn will join Days of Our Lives as Sami's brother Eric, who was last played by Ae-fave Jensen Ackles (remember the early rumors that Eric would turn out to be gay?)
In further soap news, Ronn Moss one of only four actors who was a part of The Bold and the Beautiful since the beginning, is quitting the show after 25 years.
io9 asks "Are fan fiction and fan art legal?" Frustratingly, the answer is complicated, very complicated and probably comes down to who's involved.

Left in the dark after the wild La Flor tribal council our Survivor Round Table writers convened to discuss their theories on what happened. Our review covered one possibility, but with so few facts to go on, anything is possible. Also, what was Holly thinking? Is NaOnka actually making sense? Which nickname should stick for Brenda?
Our readers must have their theories as well, right? Let's hear 'em!
Holy Manipulating Marty! What the heck happened at La Flor's tribal council?
Quiet Pool: I think Mr. Probst overestimated everyone's intelligence in his review. The young La Florians got confused after Marty didn't use his immunity idol. Or maybe they were so ill-prepared that they had no plan for a re-vote and were wingin' it.
Lady Gaga: Mind blowing! What the heck happened? Could Marty have used the idol for the second vote? No, right? So many questions. Were they really that worried about Kelly B?...

"Survivor" and CBS are launching a new Stand Up 2 Cancer fundraising initiative, with "Survivor: Africa" winner and cancer survivor Ethan Zohn as the spokesman.

In the second season of "Survivor," Jerri Manthey wasn't a very nice woman. She was, in fact, rather evil. Jerri earned the nickname The Black Widow, but she also earned only an eighth place finish. Brought back for the first "Survivor" All-Stars season, she seemed to revel in being hated, but it led only to a 10th place finish. Finally, at the age of 39, she could still rock her once-trademark bathing suit as well as a lot of 20-somethings. In short, Jerri was once labeled a soap opera witch, but today she is nothing if not down to earth.
For me, the one knock against Jerri this season was how easily she seemed to bend to Russell's threats. I was therefore very pleased with her strong, articulate explanation of her strategic decisions in the game. She also reflected on her friendship with Colby and offered a brutal answer about her romantic potential with Coach. That was cold, Jerri, but you warm my heart anyway.

Jerri Manthey just missed going to the Final 3 on "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains."
She tells Zap2it about how she has changed since her first season of "Survivor," that Russell Hantz talked his way out of her vote and that he is even worse in person than he seems on TV.
What made you want to do "Survivor" again?
It definitely was not an easy decision. I'm a very competitive person. I knew if I said no to such a rare and unique opportunity then I would spend the rest of my life freaked out that I had said no, wondering what could have been. I'm so glad I did it.
You've changed so much. Last time you were the girl everybody loved to hate, but this time around you were downright sweet. Is this more of who you really are?

Sandra once again shocked the Survivor establishment with her second victory on last night's season finale and our Survivor Round Table writers are excited to discussion the ramifications.
Did Russell make the right decision to send Jerri to the jury? Was his and Parvati's fate sealed anyway? Should Sandra be called the best to ever play Survivor? TV Fanatic's final three discuss these questions and more.
As always, our writers want to hear from the readers.
Who should Russell have taken with him to the final three?
Kakdaddy: My thoughts during the show were that he should have sent Parvati packing. I still don't think he would have won because he comes off as so arrogant and abrasive that nobody was going to vote for him.
Lady Gaga: He would have been better off taking Jerri, that at least would have gotten him a few votes. However, since...

Colby Donaldson was the last Hero left standing on "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains."
He talks to Zap2it about his lack of enthusiasm this time around, how the game has changed and how classless he thought the Dumbest Move in "Survivor" History award was.
What made you want to do Survivor again?
Good question. It is a game that I fell in love with 10 years ago. I really did. I hold a lot of nostalgia for it. When the call came in, I was stoked. I was so excited. I immediately responded with yes. Unfortunately, I just didn't have a great experience.
It really seemed like this time around your heart wasn't in it. Is that a fair assessment?

Parvati Shallow took second place despite playing a good all-around game in "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains."
She tells Zap2it in her exit Q&A why she thinks she lost to Sandra Diaz-Twine and that Russell Hantz isn't all bad.
What made you want to do "Survivor" again?
I think I have a sick addiction to playing "Survivor." I don't know. I swore up and down that I would never do it again after the second time because I played so hard and it was so strenuous on me. But when they called me, I had this voice in my head going, "Do it, do it, do it," so I had to listen to that voice.
Were you surprised you didn't win?
No, I wasn't surprised. At the final Tribal Council, people made it really obvious who they were voting for and I knew it wasn't going to be me most of the time.

Russell Hantz once again made it to the Final 3 on "Survivor" and once again lost, despite playing arguably the most aggressive game of any contestant.
He tells Zap2it about who he thought would vote for him, still being in touch with Natalie White from "Survivor: Samoa" and how he really feels about winner Sandra Diaz-Twine.
How much of a break did you have between filming your first season and filming this one?
10 days. I lost 50 lbs, I was sick as a dog, I was whipped, I was tired and I didn't know nobody. That's not much of an advantage. It's hard goin' back-to-back. If this season's Survivors would've seen my game, they would've seen how loyal I am to my alliance. I brought Foa Foa in season 19 to the final five, four of them.
Are you really at all surprised you didn't get any votes?
No, but I thought...

For the second time in a row, "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains" Villain Russell Hantz -- possibly the most hated and loved Villain of all time -- made it to the end of the 39 days of game play and lost the vote in Tribal Council. This time he was up against Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine for the $1 million prize -- and it was Sandra who walked off with the cool million, making her the first player in "Survivor" history to win twice. Et: Do you feel robbed? This is the second time you made it to the end and didn't win? Russell Hantz: When I win the Player of the Game, the Mvp of the game, then my argument is legitimate. I am not just saying it. I am not being cocky. It is fact. The fans think I played the best twice. They voted me the fan favorite.

Survivor just crowned its first two-time winner in 34-year-old Sandra Diaz-Twine, who won the show's Heroes vs. Villains season against ultra-strategic "Evil Russell" and the impressive Parvati. Many argue that Parvati deserved to win, since she was both a subtle tactician and a major force during the physical challenges. I'm just grateful Jerri Manthey stopped co-hosting Talk Soup and VH1 countdowns years ago. We're the survivors, see. [Us]...

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Way back in the tenth episode of the season, Sandra said about Russell “I hope I get my revenge because it’s gonna be good.” Chances are she didn’t realize how long it would take to get her revenge and how sweet it would be when it came.
On last night’s finale of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, Sandra once again defied the skeptics, most notably Russell, by earning six of the nine jury votes to win the title of Sole Survivor for the second time in two runs on the show. Using a mix of humor, charm and solid reasoning, Sandra was able to win the hearts of the Heroes-heavy jury.
Only Parvati seemed concerned about Sandra’s chances of getting votes and I got the sense that she only said that out of desperation to get Russell off of her own back.

Survivor's 20th season battle between heroes and villains is over, and the last person standing is the sassy 34-year-old bank teller from North Carolina.
Sandra Diaz-Twine came out on top for the second time after last night's two-hour season finale. Her feats not only included surviving 39 days out in Samoa, but also overcoming the loss of her alliance and making it to the end despite not winning a single immunity challenge. She also snagged her second million dollar prize. As Jeff Probst asked at the reunion, is Sandra the greatest Survivor player ever? We'll get to that in a moment.
After what many are considering to be the best season in the show's 10-year run, the finale did not disappoint. Colby Donaldson, the cowboy from Survivor: Australia, was the last Hero standing but could not outlast villains Jerri Manthey, Parvarti Shallow, Sandra Diaz-Twine, and the sinister Russell Hantz.

Did you miss the penultimate episode of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains? Then catch up with a recap here.
The first of Survivor's three finale hours begins with the Top 5 returning to camp after ousting Rupert. Russell tells Sandra that using the idol was worthless as all she did was prove that she was lying. She should have told the Villains that she had the idol. Sandra tells Russell, correctly, that when he found an idol, he certainly didn't run back and tell the rest of his tribe. Further, Sandra is not the type of person who can be micromanaged, and certainly not be the likes of Russell. Parvati swears to Russell that she didn't know Sandra had an idol. Russell then begins plotting against Parvati with Jerri, but Parvati doesn't care. The next morning, the tribe receives Tree Mail in the form of a bag of pieces and a...

Sandra, Parvarti, and Russell squared off in the last tribal council in a special two hour season finale, which was followed by a one hour live event where the sole survivor was revealed. That's a lot of Survivor.Colby was sent home in the show's first tribal council, which was predictable if you have been following his lackluster performance all season. Russell remained true to his original Survivor alliance - kind of. Figuring that Jerri was too much of a threat to face the jury with him, he decided that Sandra - a player with no challenge wins under her belt - would be a better opponent. Who would vote for someone ...

Last night's season finale of "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains," ended up being something of a surprise and something of a slight letdown. Going into the two-hour episode, I'd assumed that the game was either Parvati's or Russell's to lose, depending on which of the two made it into the final tribal council. They both made it. And for the second season in a row, I completely underestimated the hatred that the jury would have for Russell. And for the second season in a row, it was not the best player, but the player that the jury hated the least who won the million dollars.
There were five going into last night's episode: Colby, Jerry, Sandra, Parvati, and Russell. The first immunity challenge -- holding up a stack of plates on a lever -- seemed tailor made for Parvati, who has been killing in challenges (it was revealed at...

There were five contestants remaining but only one could be the sole survivor. Did good conquer evil? "The Insider" has the details on the season finale of "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains" and who went home with $1 million. On day 37, the contestants were given an immunity challenge. They were asked to balance ceramic dishes on the end of a balancing arm. When the dishes fell, they were out of the challenge. Villains Sandra Diaz-Twine and Jerri Manthey were the first to drop their dishes, with villain Russell Hantz out of the challenge shortly after them. It came down to hero Colby Donaldson and villain Parvati Shallow. Parvati won the immunity challenge once again and was guaranteed a spot in the final four. In one final attempt to stay on the island, the last hero standing, Colby, tried to get the villains on his side. "It might be the best strategic move...

Sandra Diaz-Twine, winner of "Survivor: Pearl Islands," takes home the million dollars once again after winning "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains."
She defeated Parvati Shallow and Russell Hantz in the final three and won by at least a vote of 5 to 3 (one vote was left unrevealed). Interestingly, Sandra has never been voted out of the game, because she's played twice and won twice, but she has also never won a single challenge.
The votes that went Sandra's way were Candice, Courtney and Rupert, plus two or three others out of Colby, Amanda and Jt, who we didn't see vote. Parvati got votes from Jerri, Danielle and Coach, that we saw.
When Candice voted for Sandra, she said that the lines between heroes and villains were blurred but that Sandra "worked hard, put family first and stayed true to herself, which [made her] a true hero." Courtney quietly whispered "Fist bump, girl" when...

Who won 'Survivor: Heroes vs Villains?' A huge landmark in the history of CBS' hit and long-running reality series "Survivor" was to bring the most favorable heroes of all time and the most hated villains of all time together for the ultimate season titled "Survivor: Heroes vs Villains" and needless to say, it was undoubtedly the best season the show has served up thus far.
As most of you know, tonight was the season finale and it was a special three hour event. The first hour just like any other episode throughout the season. There was an immunity challenge where the contestants had to make their way through a maze collecting necklaces -- blindfolded. It proved to be a difficult task for all four remaining castaways which included Jerri, Russell, Sandra and Parvarti and it was an extremely close competition considering Jerri, Russell and Parvarti completed the challenge neck and neck.

Sandra Diaz-Twine won "Survivor" season 20 Heroes vs. Villains. Tonight's finale show kicked off with scenes from the whole season. Then they showed a brief individual preview of the final five competitor's journey to the final show. Next, they showed more commentary. Russell accused Parvati of knowing that Sandra had an immunity idol. It pissed Parvati off. After the break, Russell revealed that he wanted to get rid of either Parvati or Colby because he thought he could win against Sandra or Jerri. Then they headed over to the immunity challenge. In the immunity challenge, they had to stack ceramic dishes on a narrow pole, vertically. If their dishes fell, they lost. The last person standing with dishes, won. It came down to Parvati and Colby. The amazing Parvati ended up winning it again. Parvati was really good at these challenges.

Ten years and twenty seasons later, it felt like Survivor: Heroes vs Villains was the ultimate season ever. And in many respects, it was. Ten players known for their integrity, and ten players known for the devious moves. Put them all together, and we got a pretty wild ride, from rivalries and alliances, to dumb moves and disappointments, and eventually, to tonight, to the end, with one of them goes home with a million dollars.
Last Thursday, we met our final five. There's Colby, who's a formidable player in Australia but struggled with this season. There's Jerri, the original Black Widow, who somehow managed to hang on. There's Parvati, that flirty manipulator who's out to win a second time. There's Russell, the person we once called "evil incarnate" in Samoa, out to prove that he is the best again. And then there's Sandra, the sneaky one with a heart of gold.

A battle of the sexes almost broke out on last night's episode of Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, but Parvati winning individual immunity may have saved her season and the season's of her female brethren. With just one episode left this season, our Survivor Round Table writers got together to talk about how the final tribal councils will shake out.
Was Parvati really saved by winning immunity? How unworthy is Colby for the Final Five? Who are we rooting for?
As always, reader responses are encouraged.
Would Parvati have really gone home if she didn't win immunity?
Kakdaddy: Despite all evidence to the contrary from footage shown I'm not so sure. At this point I find it impossible to predict anything that Russell does. It seems like he had one of his moments of clarity after Parvati won where he must have realized that there was no hope of winning against the Heroes with the jury.

No one cut down the nets and the name – Final Five – doesn’t work quite as well as college basketball’s Final Four, but with Rupert’s elimination last night there are just five players left who could win the one million dollar final prize.
Rupert will not be joining Sandra, Colby, Parvati, Russell and Jerri in the final five because he forgot the number one rule or Survivor: As long as it’s not me. Made famous by Sandra and Cirie, Rupert’s attempt to stir the pot between Russell and Sandra backfired.
After Parvati won individual immunity, Rupert had to realize that Russell was not going to vote against Jerri and the girls were not going to vote against Sandra. Rupert’s only play, as he mentioned, was to go back with the girls because he could not risk a 3-3 tie.

"Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains" wraps up its season with a two-hour finale on Sunday, May 16, followed by a reunion show on which we will discover who won the $1 million prize. Following Thursday night's Tribal Council, we do know that person will not be fan favorite Rupert Boneham, who was ousted in a four-to-two vote. Et: At the beginning of the season, several of the Heroes, yourself included, seemed more like Villains than Heroes. There was some attitude in the tribe. What was going on with that? Rupert Boneham: Just like my daughter said to me about the first darn episodes, "Dada, you looked a little mad." I have to say, breaking my toe in the first hour of the first day had me a little off kilter. We did not find out until I got voted out of the game, it wasn't just one bone in one toe. It...
