Director Craig Brewer knows his way around music-centered flicks. He broke out with rapper tale "Hustle & Flow," brought swamp stomping blues to the big screen with "Black Snake Moan" and made the kids fight for their right to dance in the "Footloose" remake. And now he's going back to the golden era of pop for another music movie. Variety reports that Brewer has signed to direct the developing redo of MGM's "The Idolmaker." A project once eyed by Ryan Gosling, the remake of Taylor Hackford's lesser known 1980 film is a biopic of music producer and promoter Bob Marcucci, who managed '50s rock'n'roll stars like Frankie Avalon and Fabian before burning out. And Brewer will have some familiar talent helping him out with his "Black Snake Moan" star Justin Timberlake lending his producing powers, though he won't be starring in the effort. No word yet on who is working...

MGM’s plan to remake the award-winning 1980 musical drama The Idolmaker has so far had a bumpy ride. Ryan Gosling was originally attached to star, as well as intending to make it his directorial debut, but pulled out due to scheduling issues. Now, as Justin Timberlake closes a deal to produce, director Craig Brewer (Hustle And Flow, Footloose) has reportedly thrown his hat in the ring.
The Idolmaker was originally directed by Taylor Hackford (Ray), written by Edward Di Lorenzo (Miami Vice), and starred Ray Sharkey, Peter Gallagher and Joe Pantoliano. Loosely based on the life of Bob Marcucci – the rock promoter and manager responsible for the careers of artists such as Frankie Avalon and Fabian – the story follows songwriter and manager Vincent Vacari through his obsession with finding ‘the next big thing’. After guiding a local band to success and expanding his client list, his obsession becomes a destructive...

Craig Brewer, who directed Hustle & Flow and Footloose, is set to direct MGM’s reboot of The Idolmaker with Justin Timberlake, Hawk Koch and Gene Kirkwood producing.
In the original 1980 film Ray Sharkey starred as a mercenary music promoter who takes on two boys with the intent of turning them into teen idols. The story was based on the life of the life of rock promoter and manager Bob Marcucci, who discovered and promoted Frankie Avalon and Fabian.
According to Variety, the film was “one of the MGM library projects that were put into development in 2011 after the storied studio went through a pre-packaged bankruptcy in late 2010.” The studio began working on reboots like RoboCop and Poltergeist, and now The Idolmaker.
Brewer does have experience directing reboots, as he did with 2011′s Footloose. Now the question is, will Timberlake also star in the film he is producing? What do you think?...

It looked briefly as though Ryan Gosling might make his directorial debut with the re-working of Taylor Hackford’s 1980 music drama The Idolmaker, only for that idea to vanish back into the ether almost as quickly as it arrived. MGM appears to have found a director, one versed in blending music with movies, in Hustle & Flow/Footloose man Craig Brewer. The original film starred Ray Sharkey as a music promoter who stops at nothing to turn his two young talents into big stars. It’s based on the life of Robert Phillip "Bob" Marcucci, who worked his way up to become a personal manager, first at Chancellor Records, then his own Robert P. Marcucci Productions, where he discovered and shepherded the career of such musicians as ‘50s/’60s teen idol Fabian and fellow warbling heartthrob Frankie Avalon. Marcucci later went on to become an occasional movie producer, and died in...

Justin Timberlake has entered negotiations to produce the remake of Taylor Hackford's 1980 feature "The Idolmaker" at MGM.
The original followed a fictional music promoter and his girlfriend who worried about his obsession with breaking the next big musical act. It was inspired by the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci.
Timberlake currently has no plans to star in the new version, though that might change depending upon the script and director.
The project sounds similar to Jt's upcoming producing debut, a biopic of infamous record executive Neil Bogart entitled "Spinning Gold" which is aiming to shoot next year.
A few years ago, Ryan Gosling was previously signed on to star in and make his directorial debut on "The Idolmaker". he abruptly pulled out a few weeks later, citing a busy schedule.

Ryan Gosling, for now, will stay solely in front of the camera. Not that that's a bad thing.
The Oscar-nominated actor was set to make his directorial debut (and star in) a remake of the 1980 film "The Idolmaker," a thinly veiled biopic of music scout/promoter Bob Marcucci. Now, Deadline reports, Gosling has pulled out of the film, with his schedule just too tightly packed to fit such a big project.
It's a legitimate excuse, too. He's beginning production with his "Blue Valentine" director Derek Cianfrance on "The Place Beyond The Pines," now co-stars Bradley Cooper, will then face off with Sean Penn in the mob-thriller "Gangster Squad," and then head off to shoot "Logan's Run."
In between, he'll be promoting his new Steve Carrell co-starring romantic comedy, "Crazy, Stupid, Love.," which is expected to be a big hit, as well as his Cannes hit with Carey Mulligan, "Drive," and...

Seemingly taking a page out of the James Franco Book of Left Turns, Oscar nominated hometown hero Ryan Gosling is expanding his repertoire of playing the blue-collar dreamboat, moustachioed weirdo, blue-collar boozer husband, walking Photoshop ad and stunt car driver to include director to his list of employable skills and has chosen a reboot of the 1980 flick The Idolmaker as his first film.
You can only make one directorial debut and Gosling has picked a head-scratcher for his, choosing a music biopic based on the life of promoter Bob Marcucci, who discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian (I had to Google), instead of say a slow-burning indie, left-of-centre art flick or romance that would be more in line with audience expectations.

Considering that he’s one of the more interesting actors of his generation, it was just a matter of time before Ryan Gosling jumped into directing. Deadline says that the Blue Valentine and Drive actor will be making his debut behind the camera with and starring in a remake of The Idolmaker, the 1980 film directed by Taylor Hackford. That movie starred Ray Sharkey as Vincent Vacari (based on Bob Marcucci), a songwriter/manager who’s trying to find the next big performer. In real life, Marcucci went on to discover entertainers such as Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Much like everything else, this was fictionalized in the actual film, and there’s no word yet on if this take will be based more in reality.
The movie will be done for MGM, and similar to how I feel about many actors who take up directing, I have hope. The guy has...

Ryan Gosling will star in and direct the MGM remake of 80s film Idolmaker. Gosling has already accrued plenty of critical acclaim for his performances in a myriad of indies, most recently for his emotionally uninhibited performance in Derek Cianfrance‘s Blue Valentine. According to a Deadline report, Idolmaker will be his directorial debut, as well another step toward commercializing his career as he takes on bigger budget and studio projects. The original Idolmaker, also an MGM pic, was a guido-centric biopic of Bob Marcucci. In case you haven’t heard of Marcucci, he was the producer/promoter behind the discovery of Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Marcucci actually acted as a technical advisor on the original film, which was the directorial debut for Taylor Hackford (Dolores Claiborne).

In the latest news from Cannes, where Ryan Gosling is starring in Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive,” the star is being touted as the star of, and will be making his directing debut with, a remake of “The Idolmaker.”
The original film (released in 1980) was directed by “Officer and a Gentleman” and “Ray” director Taylor Hackford, and is based on the life of legendary rock producer Bob Marcucci.
For those Stateside interested in catching Gosling alongside Carey Mulligan in “Drive,” the film will also be playing at the Los Angeles Film Festival this June. Gosling also has “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” (co-starring Steve Carell, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone) coming out in July.
While the news is interesting, it also means that Gosling will have to reduce his acting workload to take on the additional duties. Then again, the ever-watchable Gosling has never been one to do what’s expected… Mickey Mouse Club,...

Ryan Gosling certainly isn’t hurting for work at the moment – all the big superhero films have tried to tempt him with starring roles without success and he has several films lined up. But now he’s decided that he also wants to direct, jumping at the chance to remake Taylor Hackford’s 1980 pic The Idolmaker. And not only will Gosling sit in the director’s chair, but he’ll need to keep hopping out of it to run round the other side of the camera, since the actor will also be starring as real-life rock promoter/star maker Bob Marcucci.Who he? Robert Phillip "Bob" Marcucci worked his way up to becoming a personal manager, first at Chancellor Records, then his own Robert P. Marcucci Productions, where he discovered and shepherded the career of such musicians as ‘50s/’60s teen idol Fabian and fellow warbling heartthrob Frankie Avalon. Marcucci...

But what Ryan Gosling really wants to do is direct.
The "Blue Valentine" star has officially joined the ever-growing legion of "actors-turned-directors" as he's signed on to make his directorial debut with a remake of the 1980 show business film, "The Idolmaker," according to Deadline.
Gosling will also be joining the even larger legion of "actors who also act in the movies they direct," as he'll also be starring in the film, which is based on the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian.
The original 1980 film starred Ray Sharkey as a thinly-veiled version of Marcucci named Vincent 'Vinnie' Vacarri and was directed by Taylor Hackford.
"The Idolmaker" has made Gosling's already busy schedule even busier as he's currently in pre-production on several projects, including another remake, "Logan's Run," and "Gangster Squad," a true-crime thriller about the group of L.A. detectives assigned to take down gangster Mickey Cohen.

It comes as no surprise that talented actor Ryan Gosling would want to jump behind the camera, but it is somewhat odd that he'd chose to do it with a remake of a somewhat minor Taylor Hackford film from 1980 about the life of rock promoter Bob Marcucci, but that's just what Gosling has signed on for.

Exclusive: Ryan Gosling is set to star and direct a remake of the 1980 movie The Idolmaker for MGM. It would be the Oscar-nominated actor's directorial debut. Idolmaker, directed by Taylor Hackford, starred Ray Sharkey in a story about the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Gosling -- in Cannes this week for the premiere of the competition film Drive, co-starring Carey Mulligan and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn -- has been shifting his focus from indies to more mainstream fare of late. When 39-year-old Louis Prima met 16-year-old Keely Smith in 1949 in a Las Vegas nightclub, it led to a passionate but ill-fated marriage and a long-lasting singing partnership. Their work influenced the evolution of pop musical styles -- jazz, swing, big band -- of the 1950s and beyond. Some say their collaboration marked the birth of the lounge-act craze.Flash forward to 2006 and another nightspot where another prodigious partnership emerged from a chance meeting. Actor-writer Vanessa Claire Smith, a member of L.A.'s Sacred Fools Theater Company, was preparing to move back to her home state of Louisiana following career disappointments. Shortly before her departure, she was waitressing at M Bar in Hollywood when actor Jake Broder performed his solo show Lord Buckley in Los Angeles. Smith had all but given up on her dream of playing Keely Smith in her long-planned bio-musical about the duo, but that night she...
