Theatre and cinema refuses festival while it is backed by Israeli Embassy amid Gaza crisis; industry reacts via social media.
The Tricycle Theatre has refused to host the UK Jewish Film Festival (Ukjff) as long as it is backed by the Israeli Embassy in London amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
The festival was due to host at least 26 films at The Tricycle in north London, but organizers are now searching for another venue for the November event and have criticized the move as “unacceptable”.
In a written explanation Jonathan Levy, chairman of The Tricycle, said: “Given the present situation in Israel/Palestine, and the unforeseen and unhappy escalation that has occurred over the past three weeks, including a terrible loss of life, The Tricycle cannot be associated with any activity directly funded or supported by any party to the conflict.
“The Tricycle will be pleased to host the Ukjff provided that it occurs without the support...

Film-makers say studios' plan to allow video-on-demand while movies still on release could close cinemas and increase piracy
More than 20 leading film-makers, including James Cameron, Peter Jackson and Robert Zemeckis, have written a protest letter to Hollywood studios over their decision to allow films to be downloaded into people's homes while they are still being screened in cinemas, rather than once they have completed their theatrical run, will take its toll on the box-office and film-making.
The directors say they are shocked that Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios and Warner Bros are to release some films on a premium video-on-demand (VOD) service 60 days after their cinema release. At the moment, cinemas generally have an exclusive run of around 120 days.
Although VOD and theatrical releases are already overlapping for some films, directors and producers are alarmed that four of the biggest studios are going down that route.

2B Pictures, the banner of Blighty’s Future Film Group, is adapting Alan K. Baker’s novel Dyatlov Pass, based on the mysterious ski incident, for the big screen.
The film will be directed by Simon Fellows (Malice in Wonderland), following the true-life events that occurred on February 1959 in the Russia’s Urals, when nine experienced cross-country skiers mysteriously died.
Andy Briggs (Ghost Town) will adapt the script on Baker’s version of the event. The hiker’s deaths have already attracted much speculations being linked to paranormal activity or a military keeping secret.
The tent had been cut open from inside and counted footprints from eight or nine people in meter-deep snow. Though there was no sign of fight, two skiers had fractured skulls, two had broken ribs, one was missing her tongue and clothing belonging to them contained high levels of radiation. Penélope Cruz and Anne Hathaway may be rivals in two biopics
Two British screenplays are competing for the chance to be the first to tell the compelling life story of the opera star Maria Callas on film.
This summer, as guests attending the Cannes film festival gathered for cocktails on the terrace of the exclusive Martinez hotel to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Pier Paolo Pasolini's acclaimed film Medea, with Callas in the non-singing title role, the soprano's close associations with glamour and the cinema were never more evident.
On display at the hotel was a selection of jewellery from Callas's private collection, including her white diamond "La Traviata" necklace, showcased alongside unseen photographs of the singer with stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly. But what the guests at the Martinez did not know was that, just along the Croisette, producers were busy with...

With so much fuss being made about J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot, it's easy to forget that there is another successful franchise out there with Star... in the title. That would be Stargate, which is due for its own sort of makeover later this year with the premiere of Stargate Universe. This is no sign that the concept is struggling, though.
