Sebastian Stan felt differently while walking the streets of New York City during the “A Different Man” production.
Stan, who spends less than half of the film under prosthetics to play a man suffering from a facial disfigurement, explained at the New York City premiere of the feature that he felt as though he was treated differently by people when donning the makeup.
As prosthetic artist Mike Marino, who was behind “The Penguin” and “The Batman” looks, was working on a series of other projects at the time of indie film “A Different Man,” Stan explained that sometimes he would be wearing his prosthetics for up to three hours before shoot time.
“And then I had this time, so I would walk down the street, get a coffee. I was too scared to do it alone, like I had to have my friend with me,” Stan said during the New...

Irish star Colin Farrell is set to regale audiences with his performance as one of DC’s most notorious villains in The Penguin. The Oscar nominee will portray Gotham city’s infamous gangster Oswald Cobblepot in the Max series which develops on events from Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman starring Robert Pattinson.

While Reeves’ dark and edgy film was peppered with notable violence, the film received only a PG-13 rating. But going by what Farrell has hinted about The Penguin, this rating might just have to be modified for the show. According to The Banshees of Inisherin star, the series will push the limits of violence through an extremely dark narrative.

Colin Farrell as The Penguin was one of the most terrifying characters in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The way he walked, talked, and acted was enough for many to be convinced that he was truly the best Penguin that DC fans had ever seen. While his acting is to be praised, it is truly the makeup that helped him transform into the notorious crime lord.
Colin Farrell (in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
Yet, some fans expressed why the production would hire Farrell and transform him into somebody unrecognizable instead of hiring a talented actor with similar looks as Oswald Cobblepot. A pretty viable point, but once fans see the BTS video of Farrell’s transformation, they will certainly appreciate not only the actor but also Matt Reeves’s vision.

Most viewers of The Batman would have been unaware that Colin Farrell was portraying Oswald Cobblepot if it had not been revealed ahead of time that he was playing Penguin. Thanks to hours spent every day in the makeup chair, Farrell’s portrayal of the Gotham City supervillain in the movie is totally unrecognizable. Even with his limited screen time, the character stole the show in a few moments, and a lot of fans believe Penguin’s role in this film was perfect.
It is worth noting that, in order to bring such a stunning character to life on screen, Farrell, 47, “fought valiantly”, but he wasn’t able to get ‘one special’ prop for his character. Yes, we are referring to his renowned cigar.

Just as in his previous feature, Chained for Life, writer-director Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man throws away the kid gloves to unpack the complicated ways in which contemporary society responds to disability. Eschewing the polemical, the film’s self-reflexive dismantling of victimhood and villainy tropes functions like a puzzle in which the ways in which the viewer responds to the central character provide the final piece.
A Different Man pitilessly plunges into the insecurities gnawing away at Edward (Sebastian Stan), a New York actor struggling to land jobs that don’t center his facial neurofibromatosis. This disfiguring condition pigeonholes him in dementedly cheerful PSA videos about how to accommodate disabled colleagues in the workplace. Schimberg never clarifies if these demoralizing projects create Edward’s low self-worth or merely feed his conception of it. The film refuses to excavate a psychological silver bullet that can explain the character’s behavior.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

Here we are, three weeks into January, and the Sundance Film Festival has delivered what promises to be the year’s most uncomfortable date movie: a grubby New York-set fable about a facially distinctive actor (modeled on Adam Pearson) who undergoes an experimental procedure that leaves him looking like Sebastian Stan — presumably an improvement, until he realizes that under the skin, he’s still the same miserable loser.
The kind of oddball satire only indie studio A24 would dare to produce, Aaron Schimberg’s “A Different Man” asks what it means to be “normal,” and whether, if we could wave a magic wand and “correct” those same aberrant qualities which set us apart, that’s really something we’d want. “Twilight Zone”-level weird at times, “A Different Man” suggests the bizart-house version of a Woody Allen movie, wherein traditional jokes have been axed in favor of long, cringe-inducing scenes...

Looks can be deceiving in A Different Man, writer-director Aaron Schimberg’s endearingly twisted take on actors, playwrights, egos and the plight of the profoundly disfigured.
Like the famous “Eye of the Beholder” episode of The Twilight Zone, in which humans turn out to be society’s freakish outcasts, this dark comedy suggests what happens when an aspiring thespian afflicted with neurofibromatosis manages to find a miracle cure, only to long for the life he had when he was still deformed.
The thesp in question — a nebbishy New York actor named Edward, or Ed — is played with tongue-in-cheek gravitas by Sebastian Stan, who dons several layers of prosthetics (courtesy of ace makeup designer Mike Marino) until peeling them away to reveal his true face. But that hardly gives Ed the life he bargained for, in a film that piquantly questions how others look at us and, more importantly, how we look at ourselves.

A caustically funny cosmic joke of a film about an insecure actor who finds a miracle cure for his facial disfigurement, only to be upstaged by a stranger who oozes self-confidence despite (still) having the exact same condition the main character had once allowed to hold him back, Aaron Schimberg’s ruthless and Escher-like “A Different Man” might have felt cruel if not for how cleverly it complicates its punchline.
Are we supposed to be laughing at someone — someone who’s been treated like a monster for his entire adult life — just because they couldn’t resist the opportunity to shed their skin? Anyone familiar with Schimberg’s “Chained for Life,” which similarly defenestrated the notion of disabilities as “God’s mistakes,” already knows the answer to that question. Besides, who among us would pass up the chance to look like Sebastian Stan?
In that light, it’s more tempting...

Every Halloween, Heidi Klum can be counted on to debut the year’s most talked-about costume, and 2022 was no exception. Last Halloween, Klum rolled down the red carpet in an enormous worm costume. It was as challenging to move in as it was to put together. The costume required two years of preparation and took 10 hours to complete ahead of Klum’s Halloween party.
Heidi Klum’s 2022 Halloween costume was difficult to pull off
After a two-year break from her Halloween parties because of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Klum brought her event back in 2022. She’d spent two years brainstorming and landed on a worm costume.
“I like to do something unexpected, so I tried to think of a costume that is super absurd, but also very familiar,” she told Vogue. “Because it is Halloween, you need the creepy factor, also a bit gross and disgusting.”

Heidi Klum is the undisputed queen of Halloween. For years, she has celebrated the holiday in surprising and over-the-top costumes. As 2023’s Halloween approaches, Klum is in preparation for her newest costume. She is never able to do a dress rehearsal for her costumes, but she’s not sure that this year’s outfit is humanly possible.
Heidi Klum gave insight into her preparation for her 2023 Halloween costume
As summer ends and Halloween approaches, Klum is deep into preparations for her latest Halloween costume. At this point in the year, Klum has been getting her costume ready for months. She explained that if she hasn’t come up with a costume idea by March, she feels like she’s “scrambling.”
“I have, like, nightmares,” Klum told NBC. “Where I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m running out of time.'”

By the finale of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which finished up its five-season run this year, Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) has undergone a full transformation. If the Joker is the most fun Batman villain to play, The Penguin has to be a close second. If you look at actors who've portrayed the legendary rogue, the character seems to bring out some genuinely novel and committed performances. Colin Farrell had unbridled fun playing the Penguin in "The Batman," telling Total Film, "It overtook me [...] I started moving and talking and gesticulating with my hands and it felt like being a kid in the sandbox, man."
Before Farrell and makeup geniuses Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine put their stamp on the Penguin, Stan Winston and Danny DeVito had a go at it for Tim Burton's 1992 effort "Batman Returns." And in much the same way Farrell was able to disappear beneath his prosthetics, DeVito was a little too committed to the role of the Penguin. Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, in 2022’s gritty “The Batman” film from Matt Reeves. Now they’re bringing the character to the new Max streaming service for an eight-episode series in 2024. An in-production preview of the series was unveiled on April 12 exclusively during Warner Bros. Discovery’s unveiling of the Max streaming service on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles. Watch it above.
In “The Batman,” Farrell played the Penguin as a lieutenant for crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) who ran Falcone’s Iceberg Lounge. Spoiler alert: Falcone doesn’t make it to the end of the film, perhaps opening the door for other criminals to take control of Gotham City’s underworld. The film earned a trio of Oscar nominations: Best Sound, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, the last of which was largely in recognition of the extensive prosthetics worn by Farrell.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations for its awards on the eve of academy members starting to vote. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, seven are vying for these precursor prizes.
“The Batman” and “Elvis” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Amsterdam,” “Babylon,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Blonde” earned two each; and and “The Whale” has one.
Three films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Crimes of the Future” and “Emancipation” — were snubbed by the guild.
Conversely, several of the Muahs favorites — “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Menu,” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

Since the modern Muahs Awards began in 2014, one of its marquee film winners — has gone on the claim the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar every year — except in 2022. The Academy Award went to The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which was up for three of the guild’s awards but went home empty-handed.

Colin Farrell is ready to dive back into playing The Penguin.
After appearing as mob nightclub owner Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot in “The Batman,” Farrell reprises the villainous role for an eponymous HBO Max spin-off series, which is set to go into production this February.
“The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to,” Farrell told Variety on the red carpet for the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala. “Because there was all this extraordinary work done by [makeup and prosthetics artists] Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.”

Colin Farrell is not the type of actor you can easily fit in a box. That may sound like a compliment now, a testament to his range, but there was a time when that might have worked against him, or at the very least: his status as a leading man. In the early aughts, Farrell seemed to be everywhere, trying on every role available to him. His insanely good looks and simmering intensity made him an undeniable box office draw, but the burden of the leading man — the hyper-masculine, hyper-cool version that dominated the 2000s — wasn't always a proper fit. That might be because Farrell, for all his conventional beauty and latent charisma ... is kind of a weird little guy. His intensity can often come off a bit like mania, and he seems much more comfortable in roles that subvert all that aforementioned appeal.
Obviously, there's nothing wrong with that.

Supermodel and reality TV star Heidi Klum wins the trophy for the most-talked-about celebrity costume of 2022 with the hyperrealistic “rain worm” ensemble she wore to her 21st annual Halloween bash, held on Oct. 31 in New York City.
The outfit — a ringed sarcophagus from which only Klum’s eyes and mouth could be seen — looked like what might happen if the Michelin Man mated with a Slim Jim. It instantly set social media on fire, drawing amusement, confusion and revulsion in equal measure. To some, it was hailed as a performance art masterpiece; others saw it and demanded it instantly be killed with fire.
Whichever way one felt about it, however, the worm proved impossible to turn away from.
From where could such a monstrosity have emanated? To get those answers, The Hollywood Reporter went directly to the source: Klum herself and Mike Marino,...

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on January 11. Of the 10 films that remain in the running for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the Oscars, eight are vying for these precursor prizes. “House of Gucci,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “The Suicide Squad” reaped three bids apiece with the guild; “Cruella,” “Dune” and “No Time to Die” earned two each; and “West Side Story” has one.
Two films still in contention at the Academy Awards — “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley” — were snubbed by the guild. Conversely, five of the Muahs favorites — “Being the Ricardos,” “Black Widow,” “Don’t Look Up,” “In the Heights” and “The Matrix Resurrections” — didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.

“The Suicide Squad,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” lead the ninth annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild nominations (IATSE Local 706).
“The Suicide Squad,” released last August, was nominated in special makeup effects, contemporary makeup and contemporary hairstyling.
“The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “Coming 2 America” and “House of Gucci” also landed three nominations, while “Dune” scored two nods. This bodes well for all the films which made the Oscar shortlist.
As previously announced, makeup artist Michèle Burke, known for her work on the Mission Impossible and Austin Powers franchises, and hairstylist Joy Zapata, who worked on “A Star is Born” and “Wonder Woman 1984,” will receive the 2022 Muahs Lifetime Achievement awards. The Distinguished Artisan award will be announced shortly.
The winners will be announced on Feb. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

HBO Max’s slate of superpowered television will expand soon via a TV spinoff of the upcoming “The Batman” film that will focus on the Penguin.
Variety and Deadline reported on Monday afternoon that a Penguin-focused television series was in the works. Colin Farrell, who will portray the iconic supervillain in “The Batman,” has been approached to star in the spinoff. No deals have been inked, according to the publications. Deadline stated that the series was “‘Scarface’-like”; Variety reported that the show would delve into the Penguin’s rise to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld.
An HBO Max representative declined to comment.
Per Variety, “The Batman” director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark will executive-produce the upcoming project, which is in early development and does not have an official title. Warner Bros. Television is set to produce. “The Batman” is scheduled to release in theaters on March 4, 2022.

Perhaps the most startling aspect of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” to emerge when the first footage premiered online over a year ago was the transformation of Colin Farrell into the Penguin. In the new spin on the Dark Knight franchise led by Robert Pattinson in the starring role, Farrell is unrecognizable as the iconic DC villain, here given a more grounded look than, say, Danny DeVito’s ink-spewing incarnation in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns.”
As Colin Farrell explained recently on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Collider), putting on weight for Andrew Haigh’s AMC+ series “The North Water” didn’t exactly inspire him to want to gain the pounds all over again. And so, the Farrell you see in “The Batman” is actually fitted into a cleverly designed fat suit as opposed to the more method approach of weight gain.

It’s about time that two-time supporting actor Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (“Green Book” and “Moonlight”) got a lead role, and his troubled Arkansas cop, Wayne Hays, was a game-changer for Season 3’s “True Detective” on HBO.
The fact that Ali got to play Hays at three different stages of his life: his thirties, forties, and seventies, made it a more remarkable achievement as we got to witness the personal impact of the macabre murder mystery. The three faces of Hays became a study in hope, futility, and dementia as he is consumed by the case. And the masterful makeup and hair work aided in Ali’s powerful performance.
Beginning with his grandfather as a point of reference, Ali collaborated with makeup artists Debi Young and Mike Marino and hairstylist Lawrence Davis to create a unified look that suited him best. “He asked me to come do this project with...
