[Updated June 25, 2009] Michael Jackson spent his last two decades in personal and professional shambles. Now he’s gone, dead at age 50. Somehow, even after all he went through, his death came as a shock—the final shocking spectacle in a life full of them.
Last year, on the 25th anniversary of his seismic Thriller album, we celebrated Jackson as we choose to remember him—not as a scandal-wracked pariah, but as a brilliant entertainer.
We’re re-publishing that essay now as a tribute to a fallen icon, and as a reminder that his greatest work is eternal.

The Ancient Greeks had several words that can be translated as "love," but three were most commonly used. Eros refers to the romantic love celebrated February 14 and found in 97 percent of all popular music. That leaves the much-overlooked phileo, which can mean both, "I love the way my son refers to the dawn as ‘when the world started over'" and "I love way Arcade Fire begins 'Wake Up.'" It connotes a sense of cherishing a person or object deeply. For our 50th edition of Paste magazine, it was all phileo, all the time. Proving that she has a cultural curiosity to match her talent, Neko Case shared 17 of her favorite things, and folks like Michael Stipe, Dave Bazan and Notorious star Jamal Woolard...

Sometimes, when his performances are really on, Antony Hegarty enters a transcendent state “where you just feel like you’re aligned with all the stars and the heavens, and everything is exactly as it should be.” But those moments haven’t come easily. Hegarty—whose tremulous voice has become one of indie music’s most instantly recognizable sounds—says he learned to sing by emulating his favorite vocalists, and by continuing to sing even when it seemed he did not have the gift. On the verge of releasing Antony and the Johnsons’ startling new album, The Crying Light, Hegarty shared with Paste some soft-spoken, faintly British-accented singing lessons. —Nick Marino...
