Shaun and his best mate Ed are in trouble. They’ve discovered two zombies in their garden, and the lumbering flesh-eaters show no signs of stopping. However, Shaun and Ed have found one way of slowing the approach: throwing records.
And so, as the two zombies grow closer, Ed and Shaun rustle through the latter’s collection. “Sign o’ the Times … Purple Rain,” Ed suggests as projectiles, only to have Shaun tell him no. That is until Ed reaches a low point in Prince’s discography, the Batman soundtrack. “Throw it,” Shaun commands, striking a blow against the living dead.
The above scene is just one instance of the humor and horror that director Edgar Wright and his co-writer Simon Pegg bring to the RomZomCom Shaun of the Dead, released twenty years ago. Shaun (Pegg) and Ed (Nick Frost) spend a lot of time discussing their pop-cultural interests, even in the most dire situations.

A new episode of the Real Slashers video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at a movie that gave us two iconic slashers for the price of one: the 2003 monster mash Freddy vs. Jason (watch it Here)! Somehow it’s been over twenty years since that long-awaited match-up reached theatres screens, and you can hear all about what happened when Freddy Krueger crossed paths with Jason Voorhees in the video embedded above.
Directed by Ronny Yu (who previously worked with another iconic slasher on Bride of Chucky) from a screenplay by Damian Shannon and Mark J. Swift (with an uncredited polish by David S. Goyer), Freddy vs. Jason has the following synopsis: Get ready for the ultimate showdown! It’s been nearly ten years since Freddy, from the Nightmare on Elm Street series, invaded people’s dreams to exact his deadly form of revenge and murder.

‘Freddy vs. Jason’ 20 Years Later – The Ultimate Horror Battle Still Satisfies After All These Years
I was somewhat of a late bloomer when it came to my exposure to horror. I lacked the cool older relative or friend that seems to serve as a customary gateway for many genre fans. I had seen a few horror movies growing up (Child’s Play and Scream each terrified me at different points in my youth), but seeing Freddy vs. Jason at the tender age of 15 is single-handedly responsible for the horror fandom that has consumed my life ever since. Without the movie — which hit theaters 20 years ago today — I very likely wouldn’t be writing for Bloody Disgusting now.
I knew of Freddy and Jason through pop culture osmosis, but I hadn’t seen any of the combined 17 films that comprised the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises when Freddy vs. Jason piqued my interest. Even with the advent of Netflix’s DVDs by mail,...

One of the reasons that HBO's "Barry" has become such an exceptional television series over the last four seasons is its ability to walk a tightrope between an offbeat comedy and a dark thriller. Co-creator and star Bill Hader has also successfully shifted himself as the leading man on center stage to one of many main characters in his own show. "Barry" has become just as much about examining the underbelly of dysfunctional relationships as it is about exposing the uncaring, ruthless machinations of the criminal underworld.
In season 4, episode 4, "It Takes a Psycho," there aren't a lot of romances to root for any longer. Barry and Sally (Sarah Goldberg) have gone from two innocent theatre nerds to being incredibly toxic for one another. Meanwhile, Cousineau is still heartbroken over the murder of his beloved LAPD detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome), which really leaves only one couple to champion that...

President Trump ignored a Jan. 6 call from Pentagon officials seeking a coordinated response to the Capitol attack, according to national security officials’ testimony to the Jan. 6 committee.
Trump instead was calling Republican senators to ask them to delay certification of the 2020 election, the committee revealed on Thursday. “He was calling senators to encourage them to delay or object to the certification,” Rep. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “Starting Now,” the Season 3 finale of “Barry.”
Season 3 of “Barry” was the dark comedy’s darkest yet, which was achieved in no small part thanks to cinematographer Carl Herse.
“One of our big references is the Coen brothers’ balance between tragedy and comedy and how they find that line, allowing something to be meaningful but also comical and absurd at the same time,” Herse says about working with Bill Hader, who co-created the show, stars in the title role and directs many episodes, most recently including Season 3 finale “Starting Now.”
“Bill is very specific as a director. A lot of times on TV shows, you have showrunners who have a writing background but are not necessarily as visual, episodic directors who are trying to get many coverage options for the showrunners to decide what direction they want to go with,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “starting now,” the Season 3 finale of “Barry,” now streaming on HBO Max.
After three seasons of barely getting away with his many crimes, Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) has finally been caught.
Season 3 of Hader and Alec Berg’s increasingly dark comedy series “Barry” ends with the title character — a reluctant hitman whose attempts to avoid the consequences of his actions have caused increasingly greater tragedies — apprehended by a Swat team, heading to jail for the murder of detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome). That act, which has hung over the series since Season 1, initially seemed like it would get Barry in jail even sooner, when her boyfriend Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) discovered that Barry, his student, was responsible for her death. But after intimidating Cousineau and convincing him not to tell anyone the truth, Barry doesn’t seem to have to...

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has picked up the North American distribution rights to Faith Based, the Luke Barnett-scripted indie comedy that stars Jason Alexander, Tanner Thomason, Margaret Cho, David Koechner, Lance Reddick, as well as Barnett. Vincent Masciale directed the film which will be available in select theaters and on digital, cable, and satellite VOD platforms on October 9.
The plot focuses on two slacker friends who come to the realization that every low budget Christian movie starring 90’s TV actors makes millions of dollars. They soon set out on a mission to make “A Prayer in Space”, the story of the first prayer ever to be prayed… in space.
Christoph Sanders, Carly Craig, Richard Riehle, Marlon Young, Danielle Nicolet, YouTube star Lisa Schwartz, Chris Marquette, and Danny Woodburn round out the cast.
Barnett, Masciale, Thomason, and Tim Kerigan produced the pic, which premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Apologies if this offends anyone, but faith based films almost exclusively are terrible. In fact, they’re ripe for parody. After all, movies made on the cheap, appealing to an audience that only cares about quality in the broadest sense of the word, and can almost be assured of turning a profit, are easy targets. The upcoming film Faith Based takes a comedy and satirical look at what would happen if a couple of regular guys, on the hunt for a quick buck, opted to make one themselves. The premise has a lot of potential, which luckily for audiences, leads to a charming flick with more on its mind than simply having a laugh at this inherently silly genre. The movie is, as mentioned, a comedy, centering on two fairly dim-witted friends. Luke (Luke Barnett) and Tanner (Tanner Thomason) are buds who love cinema, aren’t the smartest, and need to make some money.

"What are you going to do with me, huh? You gunna keep me down here forever?!" Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for a strange, dark thriller called I Hate the Man in My Basement, which is quite an attention-getting title. This will be available on VOD in a few weeks, skipping theaters entirely. This dark comedy film stars Chris Marquette and Manny Montana, and it's about a grieving widower who struggles to appear normal while living with a secret in his basement. Who exactly is this guy he's keeping down there and why does he hate him so much? Also starring Nora-Jane Noone and Mary Birdsong. Looks especially peculiar and not that comedic, maybe there's more than we're getting to see in this trailer. February finally brings the long-awaited release of Golden Exits, but it’s not the only Alex Ross Perry film to be hitting theaters next month. The Queen of Earth director also penned the script for Nostalgia, the latest film from director Mark Pellington (The Mothman Prophecies, Arlington Road), and now the first trailer has landed.
Starring Jon Hamm, Catherine Keener, John Ortiz, Nick Offerman, Chris Marquette, James Le Gros with Bruce Dern and Ellen Burstyn, it tells a series of stories about memories and regret. It certainly looks more sentimental than Perry’s previous work and we’ll find out the first reactions soon as it premieres at Palm Springs International Film Festival this weekend.
See the trailer and poster below.
A mosaic of stories about love and loss, Nostalgia explores our relationships to the objects, artifacts, and memories that shape our lives.

In Mark Pellington’s newest drama, penned by indie stalwart Alex Ross Perry, one of life’s enduring — and, frankly, damn unsettling — questions is writ large though the various stories of people dealing with love and loss in different ways: what would you save from a burning building? Ellen Burstyn’s character asks that query overtly in the film’s first trailer, playing a woman who literally had to ask that very question as her home went up in flames.
She’s hardly the only person sorting through the value of objects, as “Nostalgia” weaves together a “mosaic of stories about love and loss” and, per its own intriguingly short synopsis, aims to “explore our relationships to the objects, artifacts, and memories that shape our lives.” Elsewhere, Jon Hamm appears as a man wrestling with the weight of his childhood home and what it actually means to him.

Fear Inc. introduces an idea that’ll have most horror fans licking their lips, but ultimately fails to stick multiple landings. Director Vincent Masciale attempts to out-meta heavyweights such as Cabin In The Woods, but his self-serving plea to genre lovers comes across as more desperate than inspirational.
Characters talk in dialogue from past genre classics, making Luke Barnett’s screenplay seem poser-ish by incessantly focusing on past classics instead of investing in a righteous fake company. Fun horror appreciation (a Mimesis inspiration) unravels as “reveals” keep on whiffing, until you’re sick and tired of hitting the restart button. 2Nd Update (9/23, 3:23 Pdt): An earlier version of this article listed Elle Evans as the actress who plays the title role in The Love Witch. That distinction in fact goes to Samantha Robinson. We regret the error. Update (9/22, 11:37 Pm Pdt): The same day this article was published, Paramount pushed back the release date for Rings from October 28 to February 3, 2017. Original Article: Fall has traditionally been viewed as the prime time of year for the horror film, but this summer was actually a pretty good one for the genre, with movies like The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, and the surprise smash Don't Breathe doing gangbusters business in the midst of blockbuster season. But the year's not over yet! With September in full swing, there are a number of worthwhile (and, yes, questionable) titles looming on the release calendar over the next three months. Below, you can find a rundown of 12 upcoming horror films,...

It often makes you wonder about the tastes of modern audiences when horror comedies – a combination of the two most downright enjoyable genres in cinema – usually manage to both be a turn-off critics, and fail at the box office. If ever a genre had the potential for send-up, it’s the one that spawned the immortal classics Unfriended, Ouija and Annabelle.
Then again, it’s entirely possible that a modern crowd just doesn’t want to see horror being parodied. A decent horror comedy (or, failing that, Scary Movie 5) will make fun of all the genre conventions and spoof their weaknesses, and the people who’re itching to see another Friday the 13th eboot don’t want that.
Or maybe they watched A Haunted House and Vampires Suck and wrote off the idea that horror can be funny. It can, but you won’t find many laughs in those opportunistic would-be comedies,...

"You made an enemy you don't want." Lionsgate Premiere has debuted a trailer for the suspense thriller Misconduct, starring Josh Duhamel as a young lawyer who gets caught in a sticky situation. This trailer sets up the story where early on he meets a couple of other people including Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins as other lawyers. He then meets one Malin Akerman, who seduces him, and that sets off a crazy chain of events. The cast also features Julia Stiles, Alice Eve, Chris Marquette and Byung-hun Lee. I can't say this looks good, but they did grab me with the mystery of what the heck is happening. But that's it. Here's the first official trailer for Shintaro Shimosawa's Misconduct, found on YouTube: When an ambitious young lawyer (Josh Duhamel) takes on a big case against a powerful and ruthless executive of a large pharmaceutical company, he soon finds...

Im still waiting for a genuinely awesome Slenderman film. Hope was high for The Slender Man but that was one of the messiest found footage films ever released (seriously avoid it at all costs) and completely unenjoyable. I had even greater hopes for Always Watching A Marble Hornets Story. Being a big fan of Chris Marquette instilled some measure of false belief in the project. Chris couldnt save it as awesome as he may be. The wait for a terrific Slenderman picture will continue on because we didnt get it from Always Watching. Tough break.

Sneak Peek "Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story", the 2015 horror feature from director James Moran, now available on DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment:
"...on the hunt for an intriguing story, a small-town news team follows a crew inspecting repossessed houses. Inside a particularly strange house, the news team discovers a box of video tapes inside a locked closet.
"Sensing a story, they decide to take them back to their studio. From the tapes, they learn that the family who had lived in the house was not pushed out by the banks, but fled the house in fear for their lives.
"Trying to decode the story, the crew keeps seeing a faceless figure dressed in a dark suit appear in the footage that causes the videotape to scramble. Their fear mounts when this figure, 'The Operator' as he is deemed, starts to appear in their real lives, standing quietly and always watching them.

Marble Hornets is a web series created by Joseph DeLage and Troy Magner that debuted in 2009 and quickly created a solid fan base through 87 episodes. It revolves around a young man Tim who discovers the tapes his friend Alex gave to him shortly before disappearing. Alex was in the woods filming a movie called Marble Hornets, which in the process changed his personality, made him paranoid, despondent, and eventually crazy. As Tim delves into the recordings and begins to notice distortion or absence of sound and video, it becomes increasingly more apparent that a supernatural power known as The Operator (aka Slender Man) is behind it. The series is a slow burn for sure, but that makes the scares all the more impacting. Marble Hornets is everything “found footage” should be — slow paced, immersive, engrossing, and terrifying. This is why the film “adaptation” is so very disappointing.

Goodbye Horses: Chopra’s Nonsensical English Language Debut
The point of Bollywood director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s English debut Broken Horses seems lost, along with a whole host of other cinematic necessities, in translation. A sort of remake of Chopra’s 1989 film Parinda, the action is transposed from Mumbai to the Us Southwest Border circa 9/11, using a metaphor of brotherly discord to reflect the cultural shift toward dehumanization that occurs in the wake of both large and small scale violence. With several well-known cast members in the mix, the film’s biggest mystery is how none of them questioned the implausibility of their character’s dialogue and a staunchly illogical narrative before or during the making of the film. Hovering somewhere between the realm of watchable camp and stilted, po-faced sermonizing, the final product is insignificantly bizarre.
