“There’s no nice way to tell 10 million Swifties, ‘There are no tickets,’” said Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino a day after the company’s colossal failure to deliver Taylor Swift tickets to fans who hoped to see her Eras Tour. He added: “So they do what they do and they go to social, and we deal with that every day.”
But angry Swifties aren’t Rapino’s only concern. As its platform was melting down under the unprecedented demand for Swift tickets, news broke that a Department of Justice...

The Weinstein Co. had been touting its partnership with the Elvis Presley estate to produce the rocker’s first-ever TV biopic to be shot at Graceland. But it appears that may not be happening now, as Apple Music, where the project was set up, confirmed Monday that instead it had been scrapped.
The project, first announced in September 2016, was still in the early stages of development. But it represents the latest major fall out from the still unfolding Harvey Weinstein scandal, and comes as The Weinstein Co. mulls its entire future as a production company.
According to Deadline, which first broke the news, Weinstein Co. COO David Glasser is now shopping the series elsewhere, including to another network that had previously been outbid by Apple. 2017 will see the 40th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, and it is presumably this milestone that Weinstein Television is aiming for with a high profile biopic of the legendary entertainer. Elvis will be groundbreaking, in that it will see the company partner with the Presley Estate, along with Priscilla Presley (widow of Elvis), Jerry Schilling (member of Presley’s entourage), Harvey Weinstein and David Glasser (also of The Weinstein Company) as executive producers.
The 8-10 episode event will be based on the book Elvis, by Dave Marsh – a comprehensive study of the life and times of the man who changed music and pop culture forever. But, it is the unprecedented access to the star’s Graceland property, his private journals, and his personal effects that will make this project truly unique. Evidently, this type of opportunity has never before been provided.

Tim Sommer, rock raconteur extraordinaire, recently wrote a playlist for Tim Broun's blog Stupefaction. (#1 choice shown above.) Mr. Sommer has lately been writing a daily column in The Brooklyn Bugle (motto: "On the Web because paper is expensive") that immediately became the one thing that I read every day, just so I can enjoy his combination of cultural erudition and lunatic whimsy. In one of his Bugle columns he wrote about making the list. And in that article he posited other approaches/lists that I found myself wishing he had made as well. But he's undoubtedly got better things to do with his time. I apparently do not, however (okay, I do, I just have poor impulse control), and made my own lists based on his criteria.
And here they are. I could have gone thirty deep on each of these lists just as he did on Stupefaction (well, maybe...

When this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony airs on HBO Saturday night, Rush, Heart, Public Enemy, Donna Summer and Randy Newman, among others, will be seen joining those already enshrined in the Cleveland museum. But one group that won't be represented, yet again, is the self-proclaimed "hottest band in the world," Kiss.
Longtime fans can't believe the group that taught America how to rock and roll all night and party every day still hasn't made the cut. The Huffington Post asked lead singer Paul Stanley if there's hope of a reprieve.
"Well, it depends on who lives longer, us or Jann Wenner," Stanley said, referring to the Rolling Stone editor-in-chief who co-founded the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in the mid-1980s.
Fans have a tendency to blame Wenner for the Kiss snub. (One brave loyalist even confronted Wenner on the street to demand answers.

New York — It's hard to think of any song that has taken a stranger journey through popular culture than Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."
Recorded in 1984, it was on the only Cohen album rejected by his record company. Virtually no one noticed when the song did come out on an independent label. Since then, through dozens of cover versions, high-profile performances and appearances on TV or movie soundtracks, "Hallelujah" has become a modern standard.
Author Alan Light reflected upon that while at Yom Kippur services in Manhattan two years ago, as he saw congregants in tears when the choir sang "Hallelujah." His curiosity led him to write "The Holy or the Broken," about the song's trajectory, about Cohen and about its most celebrated singer, the late Jeff Buckley. The book is out Tuesday.

Bruce Springsteen felt 'suicidal' and 'depressed' in the 1980s, according to his biographer. Dave Marsh, who is also a good friend of the musician, claims the 'Born to Run' hitmaker was feeling down around the time that he was finishing his sixth studio album 'Nebraska' in 1982, but his depression 'wasn't shocking'. He said: 'He was feeling suicidal. The depression wasn't shocking, per se. 'He was on a rocket ride, from nothing to something, and now you're getting your ass kissed day and night. You might start to have some inner conflicts about your real self-worth.' The 62-year-old rocker hinted he had such feelings and would try to 'self-obliterate' by performing lengthy concerts, which went on for as...

Bruce Springsteen, one of the most revered artists making music, has revealed that he had suicidal thoughts in 1982, the year that his bleak-but-iconic album Nebraska was released, according to a new profile in this month’s New Yorker.
Springsteen suffered bouts of severe depression in the early '80s, according to his friend and biographer Dave Marsh.
"He was feeling suicidal. The depression wasn’t shocking, per se. He was on a rocket ride, from nothing to something, and now you are getting your ass kissed day and night," Marsh writes. "You might start to have some inner conflicts about your real self-worth.”
"My issues weren’t as obvious as drugs," Springsteen told the New Yorker. "Mine were different, they were quieter – just as problematic, but quieter. With all artists, because of the undertow of history and self-loathing, there is a tremendous push toward self-obliteration that occurs onstage.

Legendary rock critic Dave Marsh once said of the Fab Faux, "All rock bands want to be like the Beatles; these guys have the nerve to Be the Beatles. Amazingly, they're so good at it you learn new things about the originals." And he's right. The band is quite literally a labor of love that was born years ago out of an elevator conversation between neighbors Jimmy Vivino (Music Director for Conan O'Brien) and Will Lee (bassist for Paul Shaffer's CBS Orchestra on the Late Show with David Letterman). The band encompasses Vivino and Lee as well as drummer/producer Rich Pagano, keyboardist/guitarist Jack Petruzzelli, and guitarist Frank Agnello. The five principals contribute vocals and scads of multi-instrumental chops, most ably augmented by the four-piece Hogshead Horns (which includes alums from the SNL band, Blues Brothers, and Blood Sweat & Tears)...

August marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. Now a cultural reference point, the three-day festival held in upstate New York quickly became a symbol of the times: the backlash against the Vietnam War, the electric rock and roll revolution lead by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, The Who and the Grateful Dead and a general questioning of society's values. The following post is excerpted from rock historian Dave Marsh's essay reassessing what Woodstock meant in 2009. The full story can be found in the August/September 2009 issue of Relix magazine - currently on newsstands.
