The unique skill set that allows game show hosts to keep the action flowing as excited contestants vie for prizes is not something everyone has. It’s why certain hosts last for a long time and helm multiple games.
Today, some of that game show community saluted a true master of the art in Bob Barker, who passed away at his home after nearly a half-century of gamesmanship.
Some of the reactions:
Peter Marshall – Hollywood Squares:
“Long before I became an emcee, I admired Bob Barker very much. He was great at what he did, quite wonderful. I can’t claim to have been close to Bob, but when together at events we always talked about our shared love of animals. I hope everyone knows what he did for animal welfare.”
Wink Martindale – Tic Tac Dough:
“In the history of televised game shows, no one is more synonymous with host than Bob Barker.

In the 1950s daytime programming became extremely popular, with game shows and soap operas becoming a staple in American households. Although the Emmy Awards had been established in 1949, the categories were limited for the first few years, and performers from all genres, and from both daytime and nighttime programs, were lumped together in one or two acting categories, with daytime performers usually left out.
In 1962 Mary Stuart became the only soap opera actress nominated for a Primetime Emmy, for her role as Joanne Gardner on “Search for Tomorrow.” In 1968 a category for Best Achievement in Daytime Programming was attempted, but judges decided that no one was deserving. Outraged pioneers of the genre, such as writer Agnes Nixon and “General Hospital” star John Beradino, lobbied for recognition of daytime television. In 1972 the first Emmy Awards specifically honoring daytime programming were bestowed to “The Doctors” for Best Daytime Drama and to Mary Fickett...

Copeland died Dec. 28 in an assisted living facility in Sonora, California, his friend Bob Lehmann told The Hollywood Reporter.
As recently as this fall, Copeland was still singing and playing keyboards in a quartet called Now You Hazz Jazz. “It was his dream to play in a small group until the last curtain, that’s how he termed it,” said Lehmann, the drummer.

Today marks the birthday of Fred MacMurray. Writer Joe Elliott provides a fitting tribute to the late actor.
By Joe Elliott
Classic Hollywood actor Fred MacMurray is probably best remembered today as the easy-going father in the popular, long-running 1960s family sit-com “My Three Sons.” As the head of the growing Douglas clan, the pipe-smoking, sweater-clad MacMurray each week dispensed his gentle blend of wisdom and humor to the delight of American television audiences. One might have thought this was the kind of role MacMurray had always played. Not so, a fact that was first brought home to me by my mother. I recall as a kid hearing her say she didn’t much care for him. Not like Fred MacMurray??? “But why?” I asked. “Because of the jerks he played in the movies,” she told me. It wasn’t until much later that I discovered what she meant. As many CinemaRetro readers will know,...

Wayne Brady has won 4 Emmys out of 14 career nominations including both daytime and primetime. So it’s perhaps surprising that none of those awards have come in the Daytime Emmys race for Best Game Show Host, where he’s now nominated for the eighth time since 2010 as the presenter of “Let’s Make a Deal.” The series features audience contestants trying to maximize their winnings by making trades with the host. Will there finally be an Emmy waiting for Brady behind door number-two?
Brady actually won his first Daytime Emmy and first Primetime Emmy in the same year: 2003, when he claimed Best Talk Show Host for his daytime series “The Wayne Brady Show” and a few months later Best Variety Performance for the primetime improv series “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” He won a second Daytime Emmy for hosting his talk show in 2004 before its sudden cancellation after three seasons.

Remember when big-name stars didn’t want to do TV? Now they’re even clamoring for jobs as game show hosts.
Alec Baldwin (ABC’s “Match Game”), Taye Diggs (Fox’s “Hypnotize Me”), Jane Lynch (NBC’s “Celebrity Game Night”) and Anthony Anderson (ABC’s “To Tell the Truth”) are just some of the actors who now front major primetime game shows, in addition to their regular scripted work.
“You look at game shows from the 1970s and 1980s, they were somewhat cheesy,” Anderson said. “It’s different now. It’s a lot classier. It’s cool.”
Wayne Brady, who has hosted a “Let’s Make a Deal” revival for CBS since 2009, joked that “being a game show host was very much akin to being a local affiliate weatherman – and no offense to local affiliate weathermen, but there’s a stereotype.”

The Warner Archive Collection has finally released the elusive Liberace feature ‘Sincerely Yours’. Originally released to theaters in 1955, this film is a curio of the times, the studio system and most importantly a snapshot, (in color no less; more on that later) of the early stages of the musician’s career.
To be fair to the movie, we need to turn our mental clocks back to the mid- 50s (so lines such as ‘They’ll love him in San Francisco’ wouldn’t bring immediate chuckles). That upstart- television- had been keeping audiences away from theaters in droves. Various new processes were employed to give audiences an experience they couldn’t get at home, such as Cinemascope and 3-D. So what was one of Warner Brother’s great ideas ? I never thought of Nick Offerman as the game-show host type. (Rob Lowe, on the other hand…)
Yet it’s the mock-serious Offerman, in full Ron Swanson mode, channeling Hollywood Squares greats Peter Marshall and Tom Bergeron by hosting a version of the game for GQ’s Men of the Year issue. Instead of keeping to the traditional format and asking true/false or multiple choice questions, Offerman challenged his cast with straight-foward pop-culture trivia.
