Deadline is reporting that Gael García Bernal has been cast as Zorro in the upcoming reboot Z, which currently has Jonás Cuarón on board to write and direct. Pegged for a Fall start date, the film will be set in the “near future” and re-imagine the masked hero for a new audience.
Aside from that plot details are scarce, but reuniting Cuarón and Bernal (who previously made Desierto together) is a smart move and one that has us excited to see how the reboot will turn out. They’re both exceptionally talented at what they do and though Bernal may not have been the most obvious choice for Zorro, it will surely be interesting to see his take on the iconic character.
“I have always loved Gael for this role,” said Sobini CEO Mark Amin, who’s producing with Lantica’s Albert Martínez Martín. “Zorro is a hero who is charming,...

A recent report says that Josh Hartnett has signed on to star in Gunslinger, a revenge story about a man (Hartnett) and his brother who seek retribution against the gang that killed their parents in a post-apocalyptic America. Gunslinger is being produced by Mark Williams and Albert Martinez Martin, with Chris Nahon directing. Williams commented on the production: This story takes a unique and startling look at what might happen when the lawlessness of the Old West returns ... but with better weapons. If the title and plot sound familiar to you, perhaps you're thinking of author Stephen King's novel The Gunslinger, which is part of his incredibly popular Dark Tower series. Considered by King to be his masterpiece, The Gunslinger was first published in 1982 and revolves around the quest of a gunslinger to catch "the man in black" in a post-apocalyptic, alternate timeline world. So far, though, Variety has...

No, that is not the face of Roland Deschain you see above, and, no, J.J Abrams has not finally decided to put his ‘Dark Tower’ rights to good use. According to Variety, Josh Hartnett will, however, be starring in a film called ‘Gunslinger,’ billed as a Western in a post-apocalyptic world. Well, that sure sounds like the ‘Gunslinger’ we’ve all been waiting for. It’s not.
Hartnett will play a man in the near future, a snowy wasteland of a world, who, along with his brother, sets out to seek revenge against the gang who killed their parents. Chris Nahon (’Kiss of the Dragon’ and ‘Blood: The Last Vampire’) will be directing with Mark Williams (’Running Scared’) and Albert Martinez Martin (’Shuttle’) producing.

Moviemaker Simon Fellows will no longer set his forthcoming remake of Lewis Carroll's classic Alice In Wonderland in Sunderland, England - due to lack of funding.
The film starring Mischa Barton - initially called Malice In Sunderland - was due to be shot in the city in north east England, but a $500,000 (GBP250,000) funding shortfall forced the picture's bosses to relocate.
Now Southend in Essex, south east England, has been named as the new setting and the film has been retitled Malice in Wonderland.
In the movie, Barton will play an American student who, having been hit by a London taxi, finds herself disoriented in a strange city.
Producer Albert Martinez-Martin, says, "There is no problem with Sunderland at all, the reasons being we have been looking at locations which are offering help in terms of funding.
"There is about GBP250,000 which we have lined up from Screen East in Southend and we are looking at locations there right now."
But the move has upset Tom Harvey, the chief executive of Northern Film and Media, the company which was due to work on the movie with Fellows and Martinez-Martin.
He says, "I think it is very sad it can't shoot in the north-east.
"We have over a GBP1 million ($500,000) to spend but that goes on local people. In this region, talent that lives and works here is more important than productions companies coming in."...

San Sebastian International Film Festival
SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain -- Not the freshest heist movie ever made, Flawless still has a few pleasures to offer, thanks to a well-studied social and political background and to Michael Caine's lovely creation.
There is not a lot of action, though, and the heist itself is not really central to the movie. It's there, but happens without too much suspense or tension. The film really focuses on the relationship between corporate executive Demi Moore's Laura Quinn and Caine's Mr. Hobbs, the janitor.
A charming British atmosphere accompanies the film's 1960s setting, emerging in the well-designed production and costumes. Along with glamorous cast and a current taste for caper movies, following the worldwide successes of the "Ocean's" trilogy, the film should attract interested audiences in Europe with U.S. reaction a bit more uncertain.
Laura, a dedicated female executive who works in the 1960s for the London Diamond Co., has seen the progress of her career impeded by a glass ceiling. Men keep being promoted over her. Hobbs reveals to her that the managers are about to fire her to prevent her from getting credit for her ingenious corporate strategy. He also presents her with the perfect revenge -- to commit an audacious heist at the firm that has mistreated them both.
Social issues are crucial to the plot development. The international political background -- how diamond companies exploit the natural resources of poor countries to make a few men rich -- are mentioned, though not to the extent of, say, Blood Diamond. Sexual discrimination is clearly in focus, and represents an occasion for contemporary audiences to assess whether things have really evolved since the '60s. Class issues, especially the domination of despicable wealthy men over nice fellows, should appeal to the public. Hobbs is, in fact, an easily identifiable average Joe, who demonstrates that cleverness and human resources can do better than wealth.
To no surprise, Caine is utterly charming and elegant even in the clothes of the janitor. His character really drives the story. Moore (who had played his daughter in 1984 in Stanley Donen's Blame It on Rio!) brings another touch of class to the film. She is assisted by the excellent contribution of costume designer Dinah Collin, who did a great job in selecting the perfect accessories for each character.
Shot in Luxembourg, the film makes great use of antiquated and timeless interiors and turns the EU tower into a very credible '60s London diamond company.
Michael Radford's direction is invisible, which seems to be a dominating trait in his career. Who would believe that 1984, Il postino and Flawless were directed by the same person?
Flawless closed the San Sebastian International Film Festival out of competition before opening in Spain this week. Its U.S. release is set for Nov. 30.

London and L.A.-based film financier and producer Future Films has brought a pair of producers into the fold to bolster its production ambitions, with "Goodbye Bafana" co-producer Kwesi Dickson taking up a post within the company.
Kwesi, part of the production team behind "Bafana" which unspooled In Competition on Sunday, will work out of the British office and is joined by Albert Martinez Martin, co-producer of the Antonio Banderas movie "Summer Rain" (El Camino de Los Ingleses), which the actor wrote and directed.
The aim is to help bridge the gap between Future's network of equity financiers and the filmmaking process.
The company, historically one of the major players in the old sale and leaseback tax landscape, also has become one of the first to make sense of the newlook tax credit system in the U.K.
Future employed the tax credit system to bankroll "When Did You Last See Your Father?" being sold here by Intandem Films which stars Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent.
