The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Alongside exclusives like Secret Santa and Night of the Missing and such classics as Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, here are five Christmas horror recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Christmas Evil
Not to be confused with the innumerable Santa slashers, Christmas Evil (also known as You Better Watch Out) is tonally more in line with Taxi Driver than Silent Night, Deadly Night. Writer-director Lewis Jackson clearly had no interest in making a body count flick; instead, he explores the psyche of a mentally unstable man who happens to dress up as Santa and kill people. The low-budget grit adds to the dark atmosphere.

Yet another impressive marketing maneuver, and this time by Samsung, that has recruited the acclaimed director, Ridley Scott, to shoot an action film using only the smartphone flagship, Galaxy S23 Ultra. What does Ridley Scott think about the S23 Ultra? Read below and watch the first film shot on the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

What could sear your retinas as thoroughly as forbidden cult cinema in 4K Ultra HD? The unrestrained crime-shock transgressors Perdita and Romero cut a path of lust, cult ritual madness and amoral nastiness across the U.S./Mexico border. Kidnapping, murder and theft are among their printable crimes. Álex de Iglesia’s beautifully produced slice of post- Tarantino excess arrives in a completely uncut original version.

Setting aside his usual gonzo theatrics, Álex de la Iglesia deftly juggles several genres in this 2002 film including action, drama and especially comedy. A bittersweet salute to spaghetti westerns and the stuntman who made them, the film stars Sancho Gracia and Carmen Maura. The suitably dusty photography was courtesy of de la Iglesia regular, Flavio Martínez Labiano.

Fall is the season for Oscar movies; cheap summer thrillers are long forgotten. However, it’s a good time to honor the sleeper success that is “The Shallows.” Today is the film’s DVD release, the final platform for a little $17 million movie that stars Blake Lively, a shark, and a coral reef, and grossed $116 million worldwide.
There’s a sophisticated intelligence behind this movie, manipulating suspense with unexpected twists. This does not happen very often. So what did the producers and the studio do right?
1. Target women.
In fall 2014, veteran production executive Lynn Harris (“Man of Steel,” “Gravity”) founded indie production company Weimaraner Republic Pictures with her fellow dog-loving husband, Matti Leshem. Their goal: produce high-concept movies on modest budgets, aimed at the under-served women’s audience. Leshem brought Anthony Jawinski’s script for “The Shallows” to Harris.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray director Jaume Collet-Serra’s (Unknown, Orphan) new film The Shallows (2016), starring Blake Lively, Óscar Jaenada, Brett Cullen, and Sedona Legge. The two releases will be available for purchase on September 27.
Official synopsis: In the taut thriller The Shallows, Nancy (Blake Lively) is surfing alone on a secluded beach when she is attacked by a great white shark and stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she is only 200 yards from her survival, getting there proves the ultimate contest of wills. It’s Jaws for a new generation.
Special Features:
Four Featurettes:
Shooting in The Shallows
How to Build a Shark
Finding The Perfect Beach: Lord Howe Island
When Sharks Attack
Deleted Scenes
4K Blu-ray Technical Specs:
Audio
Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible)
Multiple subtitle options

You gotta hand it to director Jaume Collet-Serra. In just a little over eleven years behind the camera, he’s been responsible for three really strong modern horror classics—2005’s House of Wax (I’ll humbly defend this one to the bitter end, folks), Orphan, and now The Shallows, which has Blake Lively facing off against a deadly oceanic predator for 87 minutes. Taut, thrilling, and viciously fun, The Shallows is a great summer thriller that perfectly demonstrates the truth of that old adage: sometimes less truly is more.
The Shallows follows free-spirited Nancy (Lively) down to a secluded and mysterious beach in Mexico after recently taking a leave from medical school due to the untimely loss of her mother. Nancy is looking to take in some waves and get away from it all, so she heads out to an area her mother once surfed years ago—a place we don...

Economic and immersive, The Shallows is an 87-minute tale of one woman trying, choice by choice, to keep the odds going in her favor. 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy (Blake Lively) is bitten, then trapped, by a great white shark. She’s at first perched on a dead whale, then a rock, then a rusty, anchored buoy. Suffering a nasty wound on her leg, she tries screaming for help from the occasional passersby, but they soon become shark snacks. Director Jaume Collet-Serra gets exposition out of the way quickly through a series of brief phone calls that show Nancy has found the Mexican beach her late mother visited while pregnant with her. She’s dropped out of med school and is close to her father and younger sister. We learn this efficiently in the first few minutes, then its straight to the beach for a bit of surfing followed by that tense hour of showdown.

As Jean-Luc Godard famously never said: “All you need for a movie is a girl and a great white shark.” “The Shallows” presupposes is that adding a cute seagull, a rotting whale, and a few GoPro cameras to the mix probably doesn’t hurt. Unequivocally the best shark movie since “Jaws” (yes, even better than “Open Water” and “Deep Blue Sea”), this back-to-basics thriller either eliminates or reclaims all of the excess and gimmickry that have watered down the genre since Steven Spielberg first invented it — there’s only one killer fish, she’s shot in beautiful 2D, and it doesn’t appear as though the beast has developed the ability to swim backwards as the result of reckless genetic modifications. The film flirts with found-footage, but only in small and supremely effective doses; the shark is a digital effect, but a glorious one whose artificiality is only clear in...

Solid ground doesn’t exist in the cinema of Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson. Theirs is an action cinema of distress where the mental instability of each protagonist blurs the boundaries of seemingly tight spatial parameters. Conflict unfolds violently and manipulatively within manmade (and psychological) bubbles, as vast as the multiple boroughs of New York City or as small as the cramped fuselage of a passenger jet. There is no escape, only the desperate and unflinching pursuit of truth, moral direction, and family safety. The bad guys often win, but the good guys always gain closure.Angular compositions and desperate tracking shots populate 2011’s Unknown, 2014’s Non-Stop, and 2015’s Run All Night. Images overlap, tip, ascend and dive to visualize the world as one big box of quick sand. The camera propels through space like a boomerang, challenging logic and defying gravity with reckless abandon. Every step forward brings us...

Liam Neeson may have launched his career with serious fare like Schindler’s List, but the moment Taken ignited at the box office, it became obvious that the actor had found his niche. Since that modern action classic, he’s led The A-Team, unraveled an assassination plot in Unknown, faced down wolves in The Grey and once again combatted human traffickers in Taken 2. The actor’s formula for these action flicks is pretty clear-cut. Neeson plays a gruff but likable badass, who’s hurtled into an impossible situation and forced to fight his way out, all the while maintaining his intrinsic dignity. The actor’s latest, Non-Stop, never tries to break away from that formula, though director Jaume Collet-Serra (who previously helmed Unknown with Neeson) does make a cliché-riddled ride enjoyable.

Non-stop, the Liam Neeson hit from earlier this year, was less an action film than an old-fashioned locked-in-the-box whodunnit. During a transatlantic flight from New York City to London (on the fictional Aqualantic airlines) grizzled, hard-drinking U.S. Air Marshal Bill Marks (Neeson) receives a series of cryptic text messages demanding that he instruct the government to transfer $150 million into an off-shore account. Until he secures the money, a passenger on his flight will be killed every 20 minutes. As Bill struggles to find who the murderer is, the ground crew is convinced that he himself has hijacked the aircraft.
On balance, Non-stop was a lot of fun. It took its absurd premise, which is basically “How do you kill someone on a crowded plane and get away with” and kept it focused, never wasting a moment while pushing its growling hero through obstacle after obstacle. There were a few too...

Chicago – For audiences seeking a casually entertaining thriller that doesn’t require a great deal of thought, “Unknown” amounts to an enjoyable couple of hours. Skeptics are advised to steer clear. Though the mind-scrambling plot includes initial shades of “Twilight Zone” intrigue, it’s really just an excuse for Liam Neeson to kick even more butt than he did in 2008’s surprise box office hit, “Taken.”
The picture works solely because Neeson has an old-fashioned everyman quality that makes viewers want to follow him anywhere, even over the cliff of implausibility. Many critics bashed the film for its far-fetched final act, which morphs the plot into an entirely different genre. It’s a bit of a cop-out, but the rest of the film is so cheerfully ludicrous that I was willing to accept it (albeit with a bemused expression).
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0

Ryan takes a look back at Nacho Vigalondo’s low budget movie Timecrimes, a film that is as frightening as it is ingenious…
It doesn't take much to make a horror film. A handful of handsome young men and women, a rubber axe, a video camera and a bucket of blood are all the ingredients a budding filmmaker needs to knock out a cheap, plot-free slasher film of the Friday The 13th variety.
Creating a genuinely frightening film, meanwhile, takes more than just screaming and ketchup, and it's often the case that the most terrifying movies fall outside the horror genre entirely. As a child, I found the nature-on-the-rampage premise of The Swarm scary enough to keep me awake for a week, though Richard Chamberlain's acting may also have been partially responsible.
