In this guest post, Dave May gives an advertiser’s perspective on the woes at Australia’s newspaper publishers
I’ve worked at a number of organisations, most notably Jetstar, where print was a primary medium. We spent significant sums of money, into the tens of millions of dollars with News Limited and Fairfax.
I now work at an organisation that spends only a few hundred thousand dollars a year in that medium. And struggling to find the Roi to justify even that modest level of spend.
I think the strikes at Fairfax last week, show just how introspective and lost in time print media is.
Both the the employer and employees are arguing about which song the band should play next, after the audience has left. While I have sympathy for the workers, and sympathy for the management, it’s the model that’s broken.

Price comparison site iSelect is pushing its ‘Decide right’ positioning into other verticals, with a new campaign for its health and energy offerings.
The agency behind the ads was Ajf Partnership.
The campaign is the latest incarnation of the ‘Decide right’ strategy developed by chief marketing officer Dave May in November last year. May joined iSelect from JetStar last May.
One of iSelect’s ads was banned in January for showing a man using a laptop in a jacuzzi.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel
Directed by: Betty Thomas
Cast: Zachary Levi, David Cross, Jason Lee
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: PG
Release Date: December 23, 2009
Plot: After Dave (Lee) breaks most of his bones in an Alvin-related accident, the Chipmunks stay with Toby Seville (Levi). While Dave’s away they take on new challenges like going to high school and facing off against new musical rivals/love interests, the Chipettes.
Who’S It For? Kids, specifically those old enough to sit through a movie but still young enough not to judge based on quality.
Expectations: Low. The first film wasn’t as bad as I expected, but my expectations were so colossally low that they almost had to be beaten. This one is a sequel, which tend to be worse than the film that precedes it.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Zachary Levi as Toby: I love Zachary Levi in Chuck.
