The ABC in Bournemouth's closure - to make way for new flats - brings to an end the ABC cinema chain in the UK.
The ABC Cinema name has gone through many guises during its time, but we’ve just learned that the UK’s final ABC has closed its doors. The ABC in Bournemouth has shut down for the final time, and will now be developed into flats. These words have been as fun to write as they are to read. Another old cinema gone.
The ABC name dates back to 1928, with the chain formed by Elstree Studios owner John Maxwell. He wanted an outlet to show films made at Elstree, and ABC sort-of stood for Associated British Pictures Corporation. As a child of Birmingham, I remember visits to the ABC Bristol Road and ABC Queensway in my youth, both of which are now long gone.

By the end of the 1980s, HBO’s nightmarish headlong collision with The Wall in 1984 was just that; a bad dream fading over time. Even during the tough days, the company had remained a money-maker, and although it was taking more effort and cash to bag subscribers, the service was growing again, HBO original programming was racking up awards and acclaim, and in subscriber homes, the channel was kicking broadcast network ass. During the 1990-91 television season, the service beat all three major networks during Saturday and Sunday prime time hours. The good times were back.
Which did not change the underlying, immutable fact, and the greatest lesson to come out of that horrifying 1984 flatline: that the domestic cable universe was finite. Sooner or later, HBO was bound to hit another wall.

Paul Giamatti has revealed that he doesn't regret starring in Martin Lawrence's crossdressing comedy Big Momma's House. The Golden Globe-winning actor, who leads the cast of this week's comedy-drama Barney's Version, told ShortList that he pursued the part of FBI agent John Maxwell in the movie. "I actively wanted to do that movie. It was funny," said Giamatti. "Now they’re doing a third one? Holy s**t. I'm amazed. (more)...
