Introduction to Fritz Lang and the Long Fritz

In one of the funniest episodes we've seen in a while, The Big Bang Theory Season 10 Episode 12, "The Holiday Summation," also delves into some pretty serious issues.
The gang gets together for the first time since the holidays, and they all have stories of an imperfect holiday season.

Sheldon and Amy
Sheldon and Amy's trip to Texas is eventful to say the least. With it we get the return of Sheldon's mother, which is always a treat.
What Mary reveals in her reaction to the news that Amy and Sheldon are living together is as funny as it is important. She always worried Sheldon would end up alone.
She also alludes, quite obviously, to Sheldon's autistic characteristics when she recalls Sheldon's ability to memorize trains when he was three.
For a moment, I thought Mary might actually reveal a diagnosis.

'Cat People' 1942 actress Simone Simon Remembered: Starred in Jacques Tourneur's cult horror movie classic (photo: Simone Simon in 'Cat People') Pert, pouty, pretty Simone Simon is best remembered for her starring roles in Jacques Tourneur's cult horror movie Cat People (1942) and in Jean Renoir's French film noir La Bête Humaine (1938). Long before Brigitte Bardot, Mamie Van Doren, Ann-Margret, and (for a few years) Jane Fonda became known as cinema's Sex Kittens, Simone Simon exuded feline charm in a film career that spanned a quarter of a century. From the early '30s to the mid-'50s, she seduced men young and old on both sides of the Atlantic – at times, with fatal results. During that period, Simon was featured in nearly 40 movies in France, Italy, Germany, Britain, and Hollywood. Besides Jean Renoir, in her native country she worked for the likes of Jacqueline Audry...

It was worth the wait, wasn't it? After nearly two years of speculation, a month of mysterious adverts on loop on ITV and CIA-esque level of secrecy surrounding the plot, Broadchurch series 2 finally arrived last night.
As writer Chris Chibnall promised, this wasn't simply another murder mystery whodunnit in the same town. In fact, it's quite the contrary - it's a can-you-prove-he-did-it.
Oh and that little case in Sandbrook that tormented Di Alec Hardy in series one. Yes, that reared up again.
At the end of the opening hour, we were left with questions piled on top of questions, and with a week to wait before we get episode two, here are the 20 most burning matters that we'll be mulling over until next Monday.
1. Why did Joe plead 'not guilty'?
"The evidence against you is clear."
"Not just me. Everyone... Nobody's innocent, Paul. Everyone's hiding things."
The exchanges between Joe Miller and Rev.

Long before John Belushi mugged his spastic body movements and raspy vocals in an SNL parody, the Sheffield, England-born Joe Cocker was the voice that could sing any rock song and make it his own. His riveting performance at Woodstock, on the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour of 1970, and early solo albums made him an unlikely rock star in the Us. Joe may have lost his battle with lung cancer, but his songs will live on. His Beatles' cover "With a Little Help from My Friends" remains one of my favorite songs by him. Rest in peace, Mr. Cocker.

Sleepy Hollow, Season 2, Episode 6, “And The Abyss Gazes Back”
Written by Heather V. Regnier
Directed by Doug Aarniokoski
Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
In the last few weeks, Sleepy Hollow has settled into what appears to be a fairly comfortable episodic groove. There’s a monster of the week that benefits from some truly exceptional character design, exchanges that are at times witty and emotional between our two leads, a few bits of American history warped to serve the writers’ purpose, and everything comes to a head with a well-executed action climax and a closing scene of John Noble doing something cryptically menacing. It’s a solid enough formula for the show, and it’s yielded a series of entertaining episodes following the dramatic escapes of Ichabod and Abbie in the premiere.

In a single, extraordinary day more than $2 million in donations was pledged to seven Australian feature-length documentaries on Wednesday.
The scale of the financial support stunned the organisers of the first Good Pitch Australia event, which aids social impact documentaries.
Equally surprised were the recipients. .I am speechless,. said producer Marguerite Grey, who is collaborating with director Belinda Mason on Constance on the Edge, which looks at the struggles of a Sudanese refugee, Constance Okot, and her six children in Wagga Wagga.

Tim Sommer, rock raconteur extraordinaire, recently wrote a playlist for Tim Broun's blog Stupefaction. (#1 choice shown above.) Mr. Sommer has lately been writing a daily column in The Brooklyn Bugle (motto: "On the Web because paper is expensive") that immediately became the one thing that I read every day, just so I can enjoy his combination of cultural erudition and lunatic whimsy. In one of his Bugle columns he wrote about making the list. And in that article he posited other approaches/lists that I found myself wishing he had made as well. But he's undoubtedly got better things to do with his time. I apparently do not, however (okay, I do, I just have poor impulse control), and made my own lists based on his criteria.
And here they are. I could have gone thirty deep on each of these lists just as he did on Stupefaction (well, maybe...

Well, it finally happened. After reports that Teresa and Joe Giudice could face years (if not decades) of jail time for concealing income and lying during bankruptcy proceedings, the couple we love to hate on "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" has pleaded guilty to an assortment of the bad deeds with which they've been charged (but far fewer than the 40 counts originally laid down). The couple will be sentenced July 8. Some people are wondering what impact this will have on the survival of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey." Since the show is already filming season 6 (and, most notably, the Giudices are part of it), it might not have much impact at all. Though federal sentencing guidelines indicate Joe faces 37 to 46 months in prison and Teresa 21 to 27 months, the buzz is that Teresa will get probation (meaning she will be available for the rest of the season and any...

2.4 Family Affair
I wish I could figure out who does the sound design for The Following, because they deserve some special recognition. One of the keys to making any show work is how well it sounds. If you can't hear the dialogue that's one thing. In The Following, the dialogue isn't as important as the violence, and this is a show that knows how to get the most out of the sounds of violence on screen. You can have all the bright red blood and collapsible knives you can find in the props department, and if the sound doesn't work, then there's something missing.
More than any other show on network television, The Following knows how to make violence sound horrible.

The Following returns to Fox in a few weeks, and I am psyched. While season one was sometimes repetitive and occasionally ridiculous (there was always a follower right where they needed one!), it was so fast-paced, well-shot, and generally insane that I was hooked all the way through.
Season two is off to a very good start. I have only seen the first episode, but I loved it. As you probably know from the commercials, Joe may be dead and his cult disbanded, but once a follower, always a follower, and there are still minions out there, seeking revenge for Joe’s death as well as general chaos.

However, Joe gave fans new hope this week when he tweeted an encouraging yet vague message yesterday, writing, "Please hold while we get our sh*t together." However, that tweet hasn't erased the endless rumors that have been circulating about the band's possible split. Two weeks ago, the group's spokesman, Jesse Derris, admitted that there was "a deep rift within the band" and that there was a "big disagreement over their music direction." Last week, People reported that the rift between the former bandmates is "uglier than you think." A source said, "They are not getting along at all," adding that Nick is working on another solo album with his other band, The Administration. "I think this is the beginning of the end," the insider said. However, Joe...

Chicago – In this world, there are very few places for the creatively minded B-type personality to massage their fragile egos. Sure, you can write a 13,000 word diatribe defending the “Star Wars” Prequels, get a Phd, get a writing gig, kick-start that graphic novel you’ve been kicking around, etc., but the ability to have an honest-to-goodness pissing contest is sadly privilege of the proverbially macho. We can’t arm wrestle, we might as well have mittens for hands when it comes to catching any sort of ball, and we want people to like us. So we play trivia.
But the problem with trivia is that, once people know you’re good at it, they don’t want to play with you any more, especially if you’re like me and celebrate a correct Trivial Pursuit question like you scored the game winning touchdown in Super Bowl. Why? Because we take...

After two seasons of sexual tension, finally Mel married Joe on the "Melissa & Joey" finale. Only it's not the marriage fans might have been anticipating. Joe had decided to step up and marry Elena to keep her from getting sent back to Russia, and in order to convince Immigration the wedding was real, Mel impulsively said she'd officiate.
But Mel isn't quite read to give up on Mr. Longo, so when it looked like Joe may have had real feelings for Elena and this wedding might be more authentic than she imagined, she balked. At least temporarily.
Mel's hesitation to finish the wedding ceremony may have lasted longer than the wedding itself. On their wedding night, Elena came down from the rush of the ceremony and realized she and Joe hadn't known one another long enough to have such deep feelings. Plus, she felt an obligation back in Russia she needed to tend to.

Chicago – Life was a happy song at the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards night, which celebrated the best cinematic achievements of 2011, while presenting honorary awards to some very special guests. The event was held January 7 at the Broadway Playhouse, and was highlighted by appearances from some of the brightest talents in show business.
Jason Segel, the exuberant star of “Freaks and Geeks,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “How I Met Your Mother,” was honored with the Comedia Extraordinaire Award for his triumphant efforts to resurrect the late Jim Henson’s waning franchise by co-writing and acting in “The Muppets.” At a press conference prior to the awards show, Segel was characteristically humble and self-deprecating while reflecting on his own work. In the case of his “Muppet” co-stars, he had nothing but praise.
“Working with [Amy Adams] and Chris Cooper, I realized why those people get nominated for awards and I don’t,” said Segel.

Chicago – Dennis Farina is Chicago. Born and raised in the Windy City, his persona and manner is everything Chicago – bold, classy and the true urban Midwest. His latest film is “The Last Rites of Joe May,” which features another actor who got his start in Chicago theater, Gary Cole.
Last month, at the Chicago International Film Festival, both actors did a press day promoting their gritty Chicago-based film, which was directed by Joe Maggio. “The Last Rites of Joe May” stars Farina in the role of a lifetime, permeating the wintry streets of Chicago as an aging small time hustler that everyone assumes is dead after he comes back from an extended hospital stay. Gary Cole has a small but significant role as Lenny, a neighborhood boss.

Chicago – The Chicago born-and-bred actor Dennis Farina has had many opportunities in his career to distinguish himself in a variety of roles, but never has he carried a film as well as his turn in the recent “The Last Rites of Joe May.” Farina imbues the title character with raw emotion, feral toughness and a touch of fear.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
What is distinctive about Joe May is that he is cut off from the world temporarily, and when he returns nobody misses him. To have lived with no connections of family, friends or colleagues is an intriguing notion to begin a story, and writer/director Joe Maggio puts the title protangonist through a road-to-Mount-Calvary situation that has the nobility of the King of Kings. This film is an exceptional character study, with the supporting cast providing a treasure trove of their own quirks, that Farina plays off on like a fine musical instrument.

Dennis Farina is a legendary actor known for roles in films like Snatch, Out of Sight and Midnight Run, and of course for his long-running stint on Law & Order as Detective Joe Fontana. But even this far into his career he's still able to show a new side of himself in the indie The Last RItes of Joe May, in which he plays a hustler who falls on hard times and is forced to reckon both with his own legacy and with the people around him. Joe May recently played at the Chicago Film Festival and can now be seen in select theaters and Video On Demand programs.
