The parents of a baby born in July never expected how quickly their sick child would receive a liver transplant after they put him on the wait list.
Shortly after Daniel McCabe was born he was diagnosed with biliary atresia – a rare disorder that causes scarring in the liver and blocks the bile ducts. After receiving an evaluation at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, his condition quickly became dire, according to Ktrk.
So on December 13, at 10:15 a.m., his mother, Melody McCabe, put her 5-month-old on the wait list for a new organ, expecting to wait a while for a match.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Hmm... From director Daniel McCabe, comes a feature doc titled This Is Congo, which promises an in-depth look at the Democratic Republic of Congo’s resource wars, told from multiple perspectives of those directly involved and affected. I'll always appreciate a comprehensive look at a complicated subject. So, despite the usual knee-jerk reactions I have when I hear about films that tackle "Africa's woes" (broadly speaking) directed by non-African (typically white) filmmakers, I'll wait until I actually see the film before offering any commentary on it. I'm also encouraged by the filmmaker's approach as laid out about, and below. ...

Decisions, decisions this week -- attend the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (rebranded "Polari" this year), or see Tim Burton's outstanding new animated film, Frankenweenie? Watch a comedy about butter sculpting -- there's much more to the movie than you'd think -- or check out the Cinema Touching Disability Film Festival? See what you will; you'll find me at aGLIFF Polari, where I'm looking forward to former Austinite Kyle Henry's new film, Fourplay (pictured above), on Friday night.
Now in its ninth season, the Cinema Touching Disability Film Festival is recognized as the top film celebration of disability in the arts in Texas, and presents animated, international and documentary short films. The festival -- at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar on Friday and Saturday nights -- also features interviews with the filmmakers, actors and writers who create the films.

Indie filmmaker Ron Atkins (the man behind Schizophreniac and Necromaniac) sent word over that his newest slice of cinematic insanity, Mutilation Mile, will have its world premiere July 24-25 at Las Vegas, Nevada’s Regency Tropicana Cinemas (3330 East Tropicana). The flick then hits Los Angeles, playing the New Beverly Cinemas August 21-22, with dates in Phoenix, Az and New York to be announced shortly.
Inspired by true events that took place in 1993, the film follows brothers Jimmy and Jack DeGrasso as they go on a bloodsoaked vengeance spree. Fueled by cocaine, they slaughter street thugs, hookers, addicts and drug dealers to find their Uncle Sal’s murderer. “Mutilation Mile began production in October 2006,” Atkins tells us, “and was shot during a fast-paced three weeks in Las Vegas. I then spent two and a half years in post, editing to create an adrenaline-driven, original exploitation/revenge flick that will not only hit a heavy nerve,...
