If you wonder what motivates a band after three decades together, ask the Old 97’s. “It feels so unlikely that we’re here, in this moment, in our career and in our lives, and we’ve built something that’s really pretty unimpeachable,” Rhett Miller tells me. We’re sitting in his office — the basement room in his Hudson Valley, New York, home where he writes, seeks inspiration, and often streams solo shows online. “I don’t want to fuck it up.”

The late rocker and TV/theater composer Adam Schlesinger, who died from complications of Covid-19 in April 2020, will be feted by dozens of musicians and actors in May in an online tribute being produced by Jody Porter, his longtime bandmate in Fountains of Wayne.
Titled “Adam Schlesinger, A Music Celebration, Virtual Show,” the stream will be primarily recorded at New York’s Bowery Electric and go out May 5 at 8 p.m. Et on the Rolling Live platform, with a ticket price of $20 that will benefit MusiCares and the closed host venue itself.
Said Porter, “This is a proper musical send-off for my soul brother with a bunch of talented and groovy guests that would make Adam wince.”
Among the frequent collaborators of Schlesinger’s who’ll appear on the show besides Porter and his band the Berlin Waltz are Taylor Hanson and James Iha, both of his band Tinted Windows,...

Of the four new albums here, two feature a modern-rock journeyman in exuberant form and back to work, against extraordinary odds. Another affirms the full-strength return of a great American band, 30 years after they broke up. And they are all rich in the exhilarating — and healing — chime of electric guitars.
There are comebacks in rock & roll, even resurrections. Then there is Scott McCaughey. In November 2017, the singer-guitarist-songwriter of the Minus 5 suffered a near-fatal stroke on the road, erasing a life of songs with his many bands including the Young Fresh Fellows,...

Two years after their shockingly great 50th anniversary album Good Times! – which gave them their highest showing on the Billboard album chart since 1968 – the Monkees have returned to the studio to cut Christmas Party, their first holiday album. Set for release October 12th, Fountain of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger produced the album with new vocals by surviving Monkees Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork along with vintage recordings of the late Davy Jones.

In recent years guitarist Peter Buck, the David Straithairn of rock, has put in time as a member of the Minus 5, the indie supergroup the Baseball Project, and the Venus 3, Robyn Hitchcock's touring band. The main element all these jobs had in common is Scott McCaughey, former Young Fresh Fellow and semi-official member of the primary focus of Buck's adult life, R.E.M. (McCaughey was brought in to tour with the group during the Monster tour in 1994 and stuck around, in one capacity or another, until their official dissolution last year.) McCaughey was on ...

College rock icons-turned-radio rock legends R.E.M. may have called it quits last year, but prolific guitarist Peter Buck is soldiering on, working on his debut solo album. Buck, who often spent his downtime playing with multiple side projects including the Warren Zevon-led Hindu Love Gods, The Minus 5, The Baseball Project, and Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3, is putting together songs for an upcoming record. Minus 5 bandmate (and frequent R.E.M. contributor) Scott McCaughey told a Seattle radio station that, while no release date has been set yet, known vinyl enthusiast Buck plans to release the collection on LP only...

Although the origins of The Baseball Project date back almost 20 years between Scott McCaughey and Steve Wynn, it was not until 2007 that the band finally came to fruition. Apparently, their collaborative debut album Vol. 1: Frozen Ropes & Dying Quails turned out nicely enough to inspire a second volume of baseball-inspired rock songs with collaborators Linda Pitmon and Peter Buck. On March 1, The Baseball Project will open the 2011 season with their sophomore effort Volume 2: High and Inside on Yep Roc....

Baseball, the pass time of America, is a whole lot of fun. It's only fitting, then, that the Baseball Project, the pass time of some of America's finest rockers, is a total party.
The Baseball Project is a comprised of Steve Wynn and Linda Pitmon of Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3, Scott McCaughey of Minus 5 and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck. The band was created around its members' undying love of, yes, baseball. One song on The Project's album Volume One: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails is even called "Ted Fucking Williams."...

In spite of a violet, twilit snowscape on the cover and the title’s nocturnal farewell, Goodnight Oslo is Robyn Hitchcock’s sunniest record in ages. Recording with a gaggle of friends will do that. It’s the prolific eccentric’s second with The Venus 3—Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey, and Bill Rieflin—and guests include lead Decemberist Colin Meloy, Egyptian Morris Windsor, and Sean Nelson of Harvey Danger. Two songs even feature female backing vocals, a rarity for Hitchcock. “Saturday Groovers” best exemplifies the light mood: Its bounce is borne along by harmonies and handclaps. The good vibes go ...
