Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson took an immersive approach in his preparations to direct Summer of Soul, winner of the top nonfiction prize at Sundance and Best Documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards.
The film from Onyx Collective, Hulu and Searchlight Pictures celebrates the Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, a long-overlooked series of concerts that attracted incredible performers including Sly and the Family Stone, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson and a teenage Stevie Wonder. Premiering tonight at the semi-virtual Sundance Film Festival, Summer Of Soul is both an exhilarating and chastising experience.
Unearthing a cultural sarcophagus of 1969 Black America, the dexterous directorial debut about 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is full of triumphal performances from some of the greatest musicians of that era and any other.
This is living hidden history that you need to hear and know, as Gladys Knight says in the documentary: “It wasn’t just about the music.”
Completed during the Covid-19 crisis, the nearly two-hour Summer of Soul moves through time and memory with sit-down interviews with people who were in the 300,000 strong crowd or up on-stage. Yet, like a previous Sundance opening night documentary, 2015’s What Happened Miss Simone? (which actually contains about 30-seconds of the 1969 footage), the brutal reality of how much of the oppression and...

In “Summer of Soul,” which opened the Sundance Film Festival tonight on a note of heady historical exuberance, we see images from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, and they’re like dream visions of a promised land. An ocean of Black faces, stretching back like something out of “Monterey Pop” or “Woodstock.” Performances by blues, gospel, and rock ‘n’ soul artists who just about sear you with their tossed-off fervor. A mood larger than the event — something soft but crackling in the air.
A great many things happened in 1969 that marked the year as a turning point: Altamont, Chappaquiddick, the moon landing, the Manson murders, Woodstock. But one momentous thing happened that very few people know about (and that the larger culture has totally forgotten), and that was the astonishing series of concerts that took place over six weekends in Mount Morris Park in Harlem.

TV Fanatics Jack Ori and Christine Orlando are joined by Leslie from MyHourglass a Days of Our Lives fan forum to debate who had the best dress, the funniest moment, and is Ej really alive?
Who wore the best dress to John and Marlena's latest wedding?
Leslie: Funny how I really didn’t notice too many of the dresses worn. I liked Eve's if it just hadn't been "pearl" I really liked Marlena's wedding dress. Very elegant yet not overly fancy. Plus it wasn't white, but an off-white. Very appropriate for a 100th wedding!
Jack: I liked most of the dresses this time around. Susan's dress cracked me up! Marlena's gown was nice. The only dress I didn't like was Eve's. That half-white, half-leopard print didn't do anything for me.

Darkroom was a thriller anthology series, much in the vein of Night Gallery, where each story had an image to present before it began. The series was hosted by James Coburn, who introduced each story segment as a photographer in his darkroom, developing photographs and tales. The innovative aspect of this particular anthology series was that the story segments had free range to be as long or as short as the story needed to be, as long as the segments fit within the hour duration. Most episodes contained two stories, but at times there were three.
The tone of the stories presented on the series were mostly frightful tales, with grim twist endings that were enhanced with dark humor. The...

This Tuesday, genre fans have a Lot to look forward to, as we have a trifecta of horror classics coming from Scream Factory, as well as the new 4K restoration of the 1920 German classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from Kino Lorber.
As if that’s not enough, Image Entertainment is releasing the Limited Edition Fifth Dimension box set for The Twilight Zone this week, the cult classics Moontrap, Christmas Evil and Trancers are all making their HD debuts and we’ve got a few indie films being released on November 18th too, including Automata, Housebound and Ragnarok.
Spotlight Titles:
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari- 4K Restored (Kino Lorber, Blu-ray & DVD)
In 1920, one brilliant movie jolted the postwar masses and catapulted the movement known as German Expressionism into film history. That movie was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a plunge into the mind of insanity that severs all ties with the rational world.

In this YouTube age, a time when I can find any episode of Peyton Place or Herman's Head with a few simple clicks, it's hard to tell what kinds of old TV shows I genuinely miss and which I just like to revisit for kitsch value. Every year I feel like I'm slipping away from regular TV viewing and losing myself more and more in ancient YouTube footage, which is both edifying and horrifying. I think it's time that TV programmers start minding my departure and adjust TV schedules to accommodate more of the stuff I miss.
Thus, I'm counting down five old -- and perhaps outdated -- genres of television series that I still miss. I'd personally love if some wild TVLand exec could exhume them promptly. Let's begin.
1. Variety specials

Big-voiced diva, who died Saturday at age 48, repeatedly topped Billboard charts during her iconic career.

Whitney Houston's songs — much like those of her friend Michael Jackson — created the soundtrack to our lives. If you were in love, they made you want to shout it from the rooftops. And if you'd lost love, they soothed you back to health.
The icon, who died Saturday at the age of 48, left many memorable recordings. Here are Houston's top 10 songs and how they fared on the Billboard charts:
"Saving All My Love for You" Like several of her hits, Houston took an already-recorded song and gave it new life. Originally, this track was a duo by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. back in the late '70s. This song — which dealt with loving a married or taken man — was Houston's first #1 hit...

Like a lot of people, I've adored watching reruns of Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone and waited eagerly to hear the writer-producer-host's voice informing us that something eerily unexpected was about to happen. With his well-fitting suits and unsettlingly calm delivery, it seemed as if Serling was almost marveling at his ability to shock both his characters and his viewers.
If most of us knew him as a suave presence on the small screen, his daughter Anne has a far different memory of the man who wrote insightful and gut-wrenching television plays like Patterns and Requiem for a Heavyweight and the who adapted Seven Days in May and Planet of the Apes. Her genial father is sometimes tricky to reconcile with his sometimes grim public persona.
Serling was only 50 when he died in 1975, and his daughter was only 20. Nonetheless, the younger Serling has astonishingly vivid recollections of him and...

Ten minutes into Glee's first episode since abandoning us to a month-long post-holiday hiatus, I was tentatively optimistic.
The Tumblrati had made it clear to me that we would not be seeing much of our darling queer little Brittana and Klaine in this episode (although I was hopeful about the all-girl rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face") so the bar for my expectations of homo-liciousness was set very, very low.
And although lately everything to do with Will Schuester has been boring me, I always liked him and Emma, and this seemed to be a Wemma-centric episode.
Minute eleven, however, crapped all over that. (Note: all time measurements in this recap are gross approximations. I don't actually time-stamp the show. Really, capturing all this word-for-word dialogue is hard enough.) So let's linger in the first ten minutes as long as possible.

Just in case the title of Treefight For Sunlight’s debut album A Collection Of Vibrations For Your Skull doesn’t provide enough of a cue as to what this Copenhagen quartet is up to, the record’s overture-like opening track “A Dream Before Sleep” should be a big flashing sign. Every time a business folds, there’s a ripple effect,” she points out. “So to see a company like Latisse put their money where their mouth is, it’s really inspiring.” Among the names who’ve been inspired to support Kathy’s Make-a-Wish drive are Elizabeth Taylor, Janet Jackson, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis,...
HollywoodNews.com: Super model-turned-lifestyle design mogul Kathy Ireland has a jammed schedule in the next few weeks, including a mission trip to Honduras, flights to New York for business, and a family trek to Portland, Oregon – but she’s making time to front a campaign for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, along with champion ballroom dancer Chelsea Hightower and style guide Bobbie Thomas. The Allergan company, makers of Latisse eyelash-growing solution, are offering matching funds for donations under each of the ladies’ team banners.

In five short days, the four remaining contestants of American Idol's ninth season will hit the stage and tackle "Songs of the Cinema" under the watchful eye of guest mentor Jamie Foxx. Still, judging from the list of 34 potential genre tracks Idol has posted on iTunes (and listed after the jump), the theme could just as easily be called Tragic Treacle Week. I mean, come on now, how are these cats supposed to sound "current" or "relevant" tackling tracks like "Eye of the Tiger" or "Beauty and the Beast" or that Tina Turner jam with the word "Thunderdome" in it?...

"American Idol" announced during the Top 5 results show that the next theme would be Songs of the Cinema and the mentor would be one Jamie Foxx of "Ray" fame. He was also last year's Rat Pack theme mentor.
We were initially trepidatious about this theme because in the past it has yielded many bad performances of "Against All Odds," but then we remembered Paige Miles' debacle and felt relieved that we wouldn't have to sit through that song again. The worry came back, however, when we saw this week's list of song choices.
"Idol" might as well have called this Cheesy '80s Songs week or Kenny Loggins Songs week. The list is like six songs long and most of them are completely unusable by the Idols for various reasons -- there's nothing to be done but karaoke (most of the list), other Idols have killed them ("Over the Rainbow,...

The Inspirational Song choices are available on iTunes, so we thought we'd offer some suggestions for the "American Idol" Top 7.
We will admit that the song list is rather weird -- some of the songs don't exactly strike us as "inspirational," plus you have to automatically discount certain songs. For example...
The Idols should probably steer clear of the other Idol songs. Like "A Moment Like This" is the No. 1 Kelly Clarkson "Idol" moment, so we're not sure they should try that one. Doing other Idol hits is just a little too meta. We'd call that a big no-no.
Then there are the over-played barf-worthy songs like "Greatest Love of All" and "That's What Friends Are For." We'd advise steering clear of those too, especially since "Greatest Love" should just be retired after Cordelia Chase did it for the "Buffy" talent show. Then there are a few duets on the list,...
