As Tj and Jesse Mizell stroll through the Amsterdam Houses — the community of brick buildings for low-income households on Manhattan’s Upper West Side where they grew up — residents play basketball and stand around chatting. It’s an unusually sunny March day, and it feels good to be outside. One friendly older woman waves at the Mizells. “It’s been so long,” she shouts. “How are you? How is your mother?” The men, who moved from here to Los Angeles in 2018, wave back, grinning. All is well, they reassure her.

Updated, 6:25 Pm: More than two decades after Run-d.M.C.’s Jam Master Jay was killed in a New York recording studio, two men have been convicted of murder in the case.
Karl Jordan Jr. and Ronald Washington, both of New York, stood accused of killing the musician in a dispute over drug sales. Both face 20 years to life in prison after federal prosecutors decided not to pursue the death penalty.
Turntable specialist Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell, co-founded the legendary group Run-d.M.C. with rappers Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “Dmc” McDaniels in the early 1980s. Prosecutors said that Mizell became involved in the drug trade in the mid-’90s as the group’s popularity waned.
They allege that he had acquired 22 pounds of cocaine that Washington, Jordan and others were going to distribute in Maryland. Washington later was blocked from the deal and, prosecutors said,...

It’s quiet in the Adidas office. Staff shuffle amongst themselves, having hushed conversations yet alert, waiting for the arrival of hip-hop’s greatest trio, Run-d.M.C.
Large glass windows span the entire length of the concrete room, overlooking Manhattan’s downtown area and into Brooklyn. Everything seems small in comparison, the tall ceiling dwarfing what lay below. But when Darryl McDaniels and Joseph Simmons, surviving members of Run-d.M.C.’s trio, enter with Adidas President Rupert Campbell, all wearing shell-toe superstars of course, the room suddenly feels small.

Returning to hip-hop’s birthplace, classic rappers who pioneered the sound — as well as those who have proudly carried the rap torch — joined forces to honor the genre’s 50th birthday and celebrate its historic and global impact on pop culture.
It was only fitting that a venue as iconic as Bronx’s Yankee Stadium became the home for the eight-hour celebration, which included three dozen performers and nearly 50,000 audience members.
The universal love for rap was at the center of the night, and rappers like Nas and Snoop Dogg owned the night while also honoring those who came before them.
During his set, Nas brought out hip-hop founding father DJ Kool Herc and told the crowd: “This is our love. This is our bloodline.” Herc, 68, earned a standing ovation and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Kool G Rap also appeared onstage alongside Nas,...

As far as titles go, you can’t accuse Jeremy Elkin’s “All the Streets Are Silent: The Convergence of Hip-Hop and Skateboarding (1987-1997)” of false advertising. Tracing the two youth cultures as they dance around one another and finally intersect on the streets of New York City throughout the decade, the director gathers an astonishing amount of vintage footage, and finds no shortage of deep veins to tap. And yet, despite its doctoral dissertation-style title, “All the Streets Are Silent” lacks a thesis: less a sociological study of the rapper-skater convergence than a celebration of a very specific type of guy in a very specific fragment of space and time. In this case, the kind of young person who felt most at home roaming the streets of Dinkins-era Manhattan with only a board and a boombox for company.
And one might argue that that type of guy, now older,...

One of the standout films from this year’s Tribeca Film Festival was All the Streets Are Silent, a documentary about the intersection between skateboarding and hip-hop in New York in the 1980s and Nineties. On paper, 1990s East Coast hip-hop has been dissected ad infinitum in countless books, TV shows and films — for a certain age, the culture defined their teenage years more than anything else.
But director Jeremy Elkin, a veteran of skate films who grew up (and continues to be) obsessed with hip-hop, finds fresh material in...

Equipped with a breakneck pace and a grimy visual aesthetic, “All the Streets Are Silent,” a streetwise documentary entrenched in the convergence between hip-hop culture and the skateboard scene in New York City during the late 80s and early 90s, swelters with an indisputable passion for its subject matter, but lacks a much-needed edge to accompany its information-heavy, insider-focused disposition.

Rise Up New York! Telethon Raises Over $115 Million To Support New Yorkers Most Impacted By Covid-19
Robin Hood, New York’s largest poverty-fighting organization, and iHeartMedia joined together tonight to air a citywide “virtual telethon” to raise awareness and funds to help New Yorkers whose lives have been dramatically impacted by Covid-19.
Billy Joel at Rise Up New York!
Hosted by Tina Fey, “Rise Up New York!” brought together bighearted New Yorkers with one common goal: to raise funds for Robin Hood’s relief and recovery efforts to help fellow New Yorkers rebuild their lives as the city moves towards recovery and beyond. One hundred percent of donations raised are deployed directly to the organizations on the frontlines who are providing support for food, shelter, cash assistance, health and mental health, legal services, education and more. To date, Robin Hood has raised over $115 million toward relief and recovery efforts since the onset of the pandemic in New York City. In addition to tonight’s telethon, over...

On Monday night, Billy Joel was one of the few faces lingering in the otherwise largely deserted Times Square. His face appeared high in the sky, beamed onto 12 giant digital billboards in the famously chaotic midtown Manhattan neighborhood. It simultaneously beamed into TVs and internet livestreams as part of the Rise Up New York! Covid-19 benefit telethon, which Joel brought to a close with his 1976 New York City anthem, “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway).” A few blocks away, the lights of the Empire State Building sparkled in time with his piano.

During the month of May, Nami, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will observe Mental Health Month to raise awareness of mental illness.
Video: #CureStigma PSA - :60
One in five adults in the United States lives with a mental health condition.
This year, Nami is launching “CureStigma” a new campaign that builds on the successful #StigmaFree initiative and positions stigma as a “social virus” that is spreading across America. Stigma is a sign or sense of disgrace that sets someone apart from others. Navigating life with a mental health condition can be tough, and the isolation and blame that is often encouraged by stigma can create huge challenges to moving forward in one’s recovery journey.
“Stigma is dangerous for the millions of Americans affected by mental health conditions. It causes people to feel ashamed for something that is out of their control, prevents them from seeking help, and even takes lives,...

The mood got decidedly funnier and edgier in this year’s Emmy race for Original Music and Lyrics. It was a badly needed tonic for the country. Most notably, Tina Fey joined the musical fray for the first time, looking for her 10th Emmy with the hilarious “Hell No,” a tribute to Beyonce’s “Lemonade” (featuring an enraged Tituss Burgess) from “Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt.”
But, given the current zeitgeist, it’s not surprising that Chance the Rapper was nominated for his Run-d.M.C.–inspired rap tribute to Obama, “Last Christmas,” from “Saturday Night Live,” or that Rachel Bloom was back again with the raunchy “We Tapped That Ass” from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.” There was even room for the excruciatingly uncomfortable “The Ballad of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and and the animated burlesque of “Jing-a-Ling-a-Ling” from “Duck the Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special.”

Cannes will be hit with a huge dose of handsome next month, as Deadline reports that Timothy Olyphant, Lee Pace, and Jason Sudeikis are set to star in a movie about the FBI’s real-life sting on car designer John DeLorean. Sudeikis and Olyphant will team up, Catch Me If You Can-style, with the former playing a con-artist-turned-informant who helps Olyphant’s FBI agent get his man. Pace will play the Dmc founder, who, in addition to working on cutting-edge automobile designs, tried to save his failing business by trafficking cocaine. The FBI set up a sting to catch him handling 59 pounds of coke, but the organization’s efforts were just interpreted as entrapment at DeLorean’s trial, and he was found not guilty. The film is set to begin filming in Puerto Rico this September.

It's tricky, all right. Run-dmc filed a $50 million lawsuit in New York Thursday, accusing Wal-Mart, Amazon, Jet and other retailers of selling products that traded on the group's name without permission. Per NBC News, founding member Darryl "Dmc" McDaniels was listed as the plaintiff in the suit. The musician's complaint alleges that the defendants are "advertising, selling, manufacturing, promoting and distributing multiple products" in Run-dmc's trademarked name. In doing so, McDaniels says, the vendors "confuse the public as to the source of origin and endorsement of its products." The knockoffs listed include hats, glasses, patches, shirts, wallets and other...

This week’s “Saturday Night Live” musical guest, Chance the Rapper, didn’t just stick with doing the standard “SNL” music performance. Instead, he teamed up with Kenan Thompson for a music video celebrating the last Christmas we’ll ever have, what with Trump becoming president in January. Harking back to the 90’s stylings of Run-dmc, Chance and Thompson were also joined by Dmc himself. The musical skit detailed the best things about Obama being the president during the holidays, and made note of the things that Americans can still enjoy this year before alluding to certain doom next December.
