With all the talk of super-hero fatigue, it’s interesting to note that we never talk about espionage fatigue despite the steady stream of spies from a variety of franchises. One of the oldest and long-running series is, of course, Mission: Impossible. Once a lauded television series, it transitioned to film in 1996 and somehow, 27 years later, it’s still chugging along, in some ways invigorated with new life.
Led by the once-ageless Tom Cruise, he remains the fittest sixty-something actor in the world, continuing to do his own stunts and working with his personal guru Christopher McQuarrie, who returned for the newest offering, Dead-Reckoning Part One, out now from Paramount Home Entertainment.
The filming was originally intended to shoot back-to-back with the film’s released a year apart. Then came Covid-19 and now the Sga strike so those plans got scuttled. That said, their threat, Artificial Intelligence, has proven increasingly timely with every passing month.

For all the remarkable feats accomplished by the Mission Impossible franchise when it comes to reinventing modern action movies, one key aspect was notably absent from the series: the presence of a strong female character in a prominent role. Don’t get us wrong; characters like Jane Carter, Nyah Hall, Julia Meade, and Sabine Moreau were exceptional in their respective roles, but their characters didn’t have more individuality than the story required of them during their brief appearances. With the appearance of the mysterious triple agent Ilsa Faust, played by Rebecca Ferguson, the franchise got a truly great addition to its gallery of female lead it can boast of, who seemed competent enough to take on the franchise lead mantle on her own. Introduced in Rogue Nation, the character has left a prominent impact on Ethan’s life and career, the Imf’s position as a global espionage agency,...

No classic fictional covert operative gets their job done without the assistance of a team of agents acting as foils to the more brooding, serious lead, nor can they show off their skills without having an established archenemy, and the “Mission Impossible” franchise is no exception in that regard. Along with the charismatic, daring super-spy Ethan Hunt in the lead, the franchise boasts a number of series mainstay characters in supporting roles, acting either with or against the overseeing organization, the Imf. With the latest, 7th entry of the franchise, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1, to be released, let’s take a look at some of the franchise’s recurring characters and discuss their potential role in the upcoming movie.
Spoilers Ahead
Luther Stickell
Like Watson to Holmes and Alfred to Batman, the senior Imf agent Luther Stickell is to Ethan Hunt, a watchful guardian, a loyal friend and guide.

With the seventh “Mission: Impossible” blasting into theaters July 12 with “Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” there’s no better time to catch up on the previous entries in the adrenaline-pumping franchise. Based on the 1966 television series of the same name, the films star Tom Cruise as Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt. Since investigating the mysterious murders of (almost) his entire team back in 1996, Hunt (and Cruise) has certainly been through the wringer ever since, climbing skyscrapers, clinging to the outside of planes, and flying helicopters all in the name of completing his missions and thrilling the audience.
As we eagerly anticipate the impossible missions and death-defying stunts that await Cruise in “Dead Reckoning,” we’ve pulled together a list of streamers where you can find all six of the existing “Mission: Impossible” installments. Or, if you aren’t keen on purchasing another streaming subscription or watching ads, they...

When writing a 97th birthday salute to the great Mel Brooks on Wednesday, I neglected to include my favorite story surrounding Brooks. It involved his most embarrassing moment, which happened in 1966. He recalled the cringeworthy moment in a special with talk show host Dick Cavett in 2011, and it involved the affable game show host Bill Cullen.
“About a hundred years ago, I was on a show called, ‘Eye Guess’,” Brooks recalled, “with a lady named Julia Meade and the host, Bill Cullen. I was doing my usual thing, ad-libbing, having a good time. So, the show is over, and I turned and noticed that Cullen is starting to walk out from behind his podium.”

Action heroes have a great deal of emotional baggage, and Ethan Hunt certainly has his share. Tom Cruise’s lead character in the Mission: Impossible franchise has plenty of fallen allies in his past, not to mention an endless amount of betrayals and a whole lot of world-saving stress by the time Mission: Impossible — Fallout begins.
One thing that he doesn’t have on his conscience, however, is a slain loved one. Yes, he has one particular ghost in his life: his wife, Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan), as introduced in 2006's ...

Editor’s note: This post contains some spoilers for “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”
It’s a primary principle for any spy, even the ones in movies: Never get too close to anyone, lest they be used against you. For the first two films in the “Mission: Impossible” movie franchise, Imf agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) didn’t seem to have much trouble abiding by that concept. The super spy had compatriots (like long-time co-star Ving Rhames) and vague love interests, and his care for them often blindsided him (remember when Béart’s Claire Phelps double-crossed him?), but he was a trained professional who moved on once the bullets stopped flying.
The first two films in the series neatly wrapped up their primary storylines and missions, allowing Ethan to start fresh with the next one. That changed in “Mission: Impossible III,...

Mission: Impossible — Fallout may star Superman himself, Henry Cavill, but make no mistake—Tom Cruise is still M:i’s superhero.
In fact, this sixth entry in the stunt-filled franchise goes to insane lengths to prove once and for all that there’s no other star who can match the 56-year-old Cruise’s age-defying nerve and commitment.
As spy Ethan Hunt, he skydives out of a plane (while lightning bolts light up the clouds), motorbikes at collision speeds through Paris without a helmet, leaps across tall, tall buildings in London and, in one astonishing sequence, dangles by rope from a helicopter...

Our mission — and we decided to accept it — is to rank from least to best all six of the “Mission: Impossible” thrillers toplined by Tom Cruise as Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt.
6. Mission: Impossible III (2006)
The Pitch: When he isn’t busy wooing, and eventually wedding, Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan), a nurse who knows nothing about his spy-guy activities, Ethan Hunt leads his Imf team in pursuit of a MacGuffinish device (known as “Rabbit’s Foot”) coveted by arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman).
The Rundown: Despite the game efforts of director J.J. Abrams to humanize Phelps by supplying a civilian romantic interest — and showing he’s not so ruthless that he’d make good on his threat to drop an uncooperative bad guy out of an airplane — the threepeat is a curiously bland spectacle that is nothing more than the sum of its sporadically exciting action set pieces.

Few actors have been sustained by a single ongoing franchise more than Tom Cruise, and the hype surrounding “Mission Impossible: Fallout” proves that more than two decades after the former ‘60s spy show became a blockbuster, the formula remains as potent than ever. It helps that the “Mission: Impossible” movies never really faltered — with six movies to date, there’s not a dud in the bunch — which makes the challenge of ranking them especially tricky. Nevertheless, there’s much to explore in revisiting the various entries of this series, which includes the work of world-class auteurs and memorable stunts that make it a wonder Cruise has survived this long. Here’s hoping he lives through a few more installments. In the meantime, our ranking follows.

There's a lot to unpack in the new trailer for Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt, joined by returning co-stars Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Sean Harris as Solomon Lane, Michelle Monaghan as Julia Meade, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell. Angela Bassett, Henry Cavill and Vanessa Kirby join the cast, and Christopher McQuarrie—who wrote and directed 2015's Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation—is also back for the summer blockbuster. The explosive trailer opens with a shackled Solomon issuing a warning. "There cannot be peace without first a great suffering. The greater the suffering, the...

Former True Detective and The Path star Michelle Monaghan has been tapped as the female lead opposite Mehdi Dehbi in Netflix’s drama series Messiah, from producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey.
Created by Michael Petroni (The Book Thief), Messiah is described as a 21st Century political thriller that chronicles the world’s reaction to a man, Al-Masih (Dehbi), who emerges from the Middle East claiming he is sent from God and creates a groundswell of followers. Is he what they say he is or is he a dangerous fraud bent on dismantling the world’s geopolitical order, causing civil havoc as he beguiles the world’s media and its audience? The Imf has called for some impromptu downtime.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, and in light of Tom Cruise’s “serious” on-set injury, production on Mission: Impossible 6 has officially shut down to lend Cruise adequate time to recover. The action sequel will now remain on hiatus for eight to nine weeks, and though one might assume that this lengthy spell on the sidelines would adversely affect the July 27th, 2018 release date, Paramount is sticking to its guns.
The studio has now issued a statement addressing Tom Cruise’s injuries, revealing that the Mission: Impossible mainstay broke his ankle while performing a rooftop stunt in London earlier this week. Footage captured by TMZ showed Cruise, who is widely known for tackling daredevil feats without the need for a stand-in, leaping between two office blocks. It looked to be a fairly routine stunt – by Cruise’s lofty standards, at least – but...

Filming on Mission: Impossible 6 has been postponed to accommodate Tom Cruise’s “serious” on-set injury.
The series mainstay and all-around daredevil was filmed in apparent pain yesterday when a London rooftop stunt went awry. Footage captured by TMZ showed Cruise leaping between two buildings while attached to a safety harness, though the actor seemed to mistime his jump, resulting in him slamming his chest against the concrete. The 55-year-old managed to pull himself up, but we’re now learning that the injury is more serious than initially feared.
At least, that’s according to The Sun (via Screen Rant), after the UK tabloid relayed a report claiming that Tom Cruise will need “months to recover” for what is a “serious” injury. Neither Paramount Pictures nor director Christopher McQuarrie have released any formal statement to support these claims, and given The Sun’s spotty track record, it’s best approaching...

First spotted by UK tabloid The Daily Mail (via Screen Rant), filming on Paramount and Christopher McQuarrie’s action sequel is currently taking place in rural England, where Cruise and a squad of stuntmen are seen here performing a parachute jump. Perhaps this is part of the stunt that Tom Cruise has spent the past year training for? In Hollywood, there are movie stunts, and then there are Tom Cruise movie stunts.
Whether it’s scaling Dubai’s famous Burj Khalifa or clinging on to the side of an airborne military plane, Cruise excels in the extraordinary, and he’ll look to continue that streak with the release of Paramount’s untitled Mission: Impossible 6 in 2018.
Indeed, writer-director Christopher McQuarrie is no stranger to orchestrating an action sequence involving Tom Cruise, having directed the Hollywood veteran in Jack Reacher and Rogue Nation, which scored an impressive $682 million worldwide two years ago and proved that, even after all these years, there’s still an appetite for impossible, death-defying missions revolving around Ethan Hunt and the Imf.

Buoyed by the runaway success of Rogue Nation – at $700 million, it’s the most successful entry in the Mission: Impossible series to date – it looks like Christoper McQuarrie is staging something of a family reunion with the as-yet-untitled sixth installment in Paramount’s global phenomenon.

She also appeared in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. It was revealed in that film that Meade’s death was faked as a way of keeping her safe. Obviously, her marriage with Hunt didn't last.
Writer and director Christopher McQuarrie posted Monaghan’s photo on his Instagram account confirming that Monaghan will be reprising her role in Mission: Impossible 6.
