CBC in Canada has renewed their comedy Schitt's Creek for a third season. The comedy airs on the Pop in the United States. The cable channel hasn't picked up the third season yet, likely because they're waiting to see how season two performs when it premieres on March 16th.
Also receiving renewals are comedies Mr. D (season six), This Hour Has 22 Minutes (season 24), and Rick Mercer Report (season 14).
Here's the press release:

How to Be Deadly

Canada, 2014
How to be Deadly is proof that in the right hands, you can make a great movie from a comedy sketch. The film is delightful, clever, and very funny.
Normally, the phrase – feature length comedy based off a YouTube persona – does not inspire confidence. After all, movies based on Saturday Night Live skits are usually worse than movies based on video games. How to Be Deadly is a welcome exception to this rule. The film joins Wayne’s World and The Blues Brothers as one of the few comedies that are better than their source material.
How to Be Deadly, based on the 2012 short film of the same name, is the story of Donnie Dumphy (Leon Parsons), a fictional cult hero, Canadian YouTube sensation, and the LeBron James of mini bike riding. Throughout the film...

With the season coming to a close on CBC darling, Murdoch Mysteries, and new hitting recently that Cracked and Arctic Air will not be returning, CBC has announced several renewals, and a few new shows.
Murdoch Mysteries and Dragon’s Den are the clear no-brainers of the situation, but we’ve got a full list, plus some pretty hot new efforts.
Schitt’s Creek will be coming your way, a show co-created by Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who star with Catherine O’Hara, and that ought to be all you need to know about this one. Also added to the schedule is new show Strange Empire. Reportedly a very dark show, it takes place in western frontier town and follows the women who find themselves stranded when all the men suddenly disappear.

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, Delicatessen) has adapted Reif Larson’s debut novel The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet for his latest feature. The story centers on a 12-year-old cartography enthusiast in an eccentric family, who travels across country hidden on board a freight train after being invited to the Smithsonian Institute. The $34 million France-Canadian co-production shot for 72 days, was all filmed in 3D, using the same team who shot Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Jeunet– whose lengthy filmography includes Delicatessen, Alien Resurrection, and City of Lost Children – delivers his usual trademark style, and so we know from at least a visual standpoint, the film will not disappoint. The cast also includes Helena Bonham Carer as T.S.’s mom, Callum Keith Rennie as his dad, Judy Davis as the head of the Smithsonian, along with Rick Mercer, Niamh Wilson, Robert Maillet and Jakob Davies. Legendary comedian Jonathan Winters died of natural causes in Montecito, California on Friday. He was 87 years old.Winters' career started in radio, and he was one of the first big television stars. One of his most beloved characters was Maude Frickert, a seemingly sweet old lady with a sharp tongue. #79. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s The Young and Prodigious Spivet
Gist: Spivet is a 12 year-old prodigy with a passion for cartography and scientific inventions. One day, he receives an unexpected call from the Smithsonian museum telling him that he is the winner of the very prestigious Baird prize for his discovery of the perpetual motion machine and that he is invited to a reception where he is expected to give a speech. Without telling anyone, he sets out on a freight train across the U.S.A. to reach Washington DC. Cast includes Helena Bonham Carter, Judy Davis, Rick Mercer and Callum Keith Rennie.
Prediction: This promises to be more along the vein of Amelie (which the festival Gilles Jacob regretfully passed up on when it was offered to the Croisette in an uncompleted form) and though Jeunet doesn’t make regular appearances at the festival (his first was 95′s The City of Lost Children...

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Writer(s): Jeunet and Guillaume Laurant
Producer(s): Frédéric Brillion and Gilles Legrand
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Helena Bonham Carer (T.S.’s mom), Callum Keith Rennie as his dad, Judy Davis as the head of the Smithsonian, along with Rick Mercer, Niamh Wilson, Robert Maillet, Jakob Davies, and Dominique Pinon.
A cousin of sorts to Scorsese’s Hugo (same 3D team worked on both features), Jeunet appears to be the go-to guy for rich, fable-like worlds full of childlike wonder. After conquering adults that are still young at heart with Amelie (less so with A Very Long Engagement) Jeunet did an admirable job merging goofiness, surrealism and politics with Micmacs, and our thinking is Reif Larsen’s novel should play out well in a 3D scapes.

Can you believe it's almost winter? One of the telltale signs -- aside from the Christmas lights, holiday music and bitter, brutal cold -- is when networks begin to promote their midseason shows. That's what CBC did Tuesday at a special event on the set of "George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight." And so it begins...
Unlike the spectacle we saw at the public broadcaster's fall upfronts, the presentation for the midseason schedule was much more subdued, but that doesn't mean it was any less extravagant. The media milled around with the talent, and it was a little unnerving sitting behind Rick Mercer, new "Best Recipes Ever" host Christine Tizzard, beside the cast of "Mr. D," and across from David Sutcliffe (Rory's dad! Oh, and the star of the upcoming "Cracked") and Murdoch himself, Yannick Bisson. But that's CBC's charm, showcasing the best and brightest stars while making content key.

2011 was a pretty big year for the TV world in general. Oprah said farewell to her beloved daytime chatfest. Regis bid adieu to mornings with Kelly and Gelman. And Kim Kardashian broadcast her "fairytale" wedding for all the world to bask in. Here in Canada, we had some pretty memorable small screen moments of our own.
Perhaps most notably, our Canuck quest for global TV domination continued to gain momentum with homegrown shows like "Rookie Blue,""Todd and the Book of Pure Evil,""Lost Girl" and "Republic of Doyle" steadily growing their international audiences around the world (and we also reinforced the global stereotype that Canadians are an attractive bunch, with the likes of Anna Silk, Missy Peregrym and Allan Hawco representing us on the world stage).
Since it’s that time of year (yes, list time), we've compiled a list of the top 11 most memorable moments in Canadian TV this year.

Savage Garden's out Darren Hayes says "I don’t want to be a gay or a straight artist. I don’t make gay records - I make records. I don't want to feel like I have to be a poster child for anything other than being a great artist. I don’t take that on board as being my responsibility as a gay man, because I think it’s really limiting.” I do understand what he's saying, and he is out, and he's married. That satisfies the "visible" request from Rick Mercer yesterday, but somehow saying this seems counterproductive to kids who need to see someone like themselves.

Canadian actress Michelle Thrush paid tribute to her late Blackstone co-star Gordon Tootoosis as she picked up a trophy at the Gemini Awards on Wednesday.

Plugging Spread the Net’s slogan – “1 Net. 10 Bucks. Saves lives.” – comedian Rick Mercer announced the high school and the university that raised the most money during this year’s Spread the Net Student Challenge that ended last month.
Espanola High School in Ontario and the University of Northern British Columbia raised over $30,000 of the $104,000 total that came in from 65 schools and universities for the purchase of insecticide-treated bed nets to be distributed throughout Africa to prevent the spread of malaria. Mercer and Belinda Stronach created Spread the Net with Unicef Canada to support Unicef’s bed net distribution programs.
“Malaria is a preventable disease,” says a student from Unbc. “It’s something that we have been able to eradicate here in Canada. I feel we should be able to reach out to other countries and try to help them as well. This is the most effective way to prevent the disease.

Since 2006, comedian Rick Mercer and philanthropist Belinda Stronach’s Spread the Net organisation has been working with Unicef Canada to purchase and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets throughout Africa, where those most at risk of death from malaria are children under the age of five.
In February 2010, Spread the Net launched the annual [Student Challenge ], which invited high schools and universities across Canada to try to raise the most money for the cause. Although the goal of 500,000 new bed nets has already been reached, the contest does not wind down until the end of this month.
The Student Challenge followed a similar one the previous year which saw the University of Ottawa win in Canada’s east and Simon Fraser University in the west, raising over $800,000 to purchase and deliver the $10 nets.

I'll admit that I'm not the most informed person when it comes to American politics. While I'm given to attribute some of my ignorance to being from a different country, I also find it quite confusing. For example, why would you have elections midway through a term? It would seem to me that it would make more sense to do it all at once and get things over with (by-elections notwithstanding). Also, it amazes me that your ballots can be pages and pages of proposed referenda in addition to casting a vote for a senator, house representative or president. It seems unnecessarily complicated and may be the source of a great deal of confusion and more than a few legal challenges. I would propose that all future elections in America are conducted by way of a rock/paper/scissors tournament...to the death. Death is definitive and, from what I've seen over the last decade,...

July 1st is Canada Day, and we thought we'd take a moment to honor our friends to the north. Canada has always seemed like a friendlier version of the U.S., and is far ahead of us when it comes to marriage-equality. Plus they've given us such fabulous pop culture treasures as Sctv, The Kids In The Hall, Degrassi, Bumper Stumpers, You Can't Do That On Television and Ryan Reynolds.
Most importantly, they taught as that no one, no one! can take away our right to fight and to never surrender.
Canada can also be proud of their contributions to gay visibility, and we're spotlighting some of those men here. This is just a smattering of the out Canadians we admire, and feel free to add your own favorites.
Btw, we haven't forgotten about Canadian lesbian icons k.d. Lang and Tegan & Sara, but this list is just about dudes.

It's not all Americana here at TVOvermind. Yours truly hails from Canada – Toronto to be exact – so when we got an invitation to attend CBC's 2010 Upfront presentation, one of our contributing writers was off and running to the red carpet. Sarah tells me that she had a great time speaking with some of the stars and snapping photos. We've pulled together some red carpet pics and snippets from her interviews below. I also suspect she made an enemy out of figure skater Kurt Browning, but I'm hoping he forgets all about that.

Toronto – Just as William Shatner returns to TV with the new CBS sitcom "$#*! My Dad Says," the Montreal-born actor is headed to Canada to salute local films for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC).
Shatner will host "Making A Scene," a retrospective on award-winning Canuck films, on Thursday, Sept. 23, the same night his upcoming CBS comedy drawn from a Twitter feed will air locally, courtesy domestic broadcaster CTV.
News of Shatner's Canadian gig came Thursday as the CBC unveiled a fall 2010 schedule in Toronto that plays its safe with returning shows and familiar faces.
Another Canadian, Alex Trebek, whose career was launched by the CBC, will return to host "Jeopardy!" weeknights at 7:30 after "Wheel of Fortune" at 7, and help usher in the public broadcaster's primetime schedule this fall.
With Canadian viewers mostly shunning rookie series until they perform in their second seasons, the CBC has chosen to rely on old favorites to bring viewers set-side.

Every country has their negative stereotype: the French? Stinky; Americans? Obnoxious; Italians? Moped riders (shudder). Canada's stereotype, in contrast, is supposed to be great. We're nice. We're nicey-nice, nice people, helping old ladies across the street and saying "sorry" even if you bump into us. It would seem, to the international community, we're the equivalent of the guy that the hot girl is "just friends" with. We're not good enough to date, but one day she'll probably give us a hand job out of pity as long as we promise not to tell anyone.
Well, I hate to break it to you world, but Canada isn't the boring sweater-vest wearing place you think it is. Canada is a nation built by and for cranks. See, what the rest of the world doesn't realize is when you think we're being self-effacing and modest we're probably making fun of you right to your face.

Lucerne, Switzerland -- ABC's fish-out-of-water format "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" was the big winner at the 49th Rose d'Or festival, one of Europe's most prestigious TV honors, taking the Best of 2009 prize as well as the Rose trophy for best reality show.
Accepting his trophies, Tim Crescenti of Small World Ift, which produces and distributes "Japanese" internationally, wondered aloud why he was one of only a few Americans attending this year's Rose d'Or.
"Maybe it's because so many of the shows on air in America now come from here -- from Europe, Asia or South America," Crescenti said. "Maybe Americans are afraid to compete with you."
Crescenti went on to trace the history of the show, which started as a paper format out of Denmark and, outside the U.S., is now on air in several European territories.

I am on record here as repeatedly stating my belief that Armando Iannucci is quite simply the greatest political satirist in the world today. No offense to Jon Stewart - who I also love - or Stephen Colbert - who I enjoy but find more than a little gimmicky - or Canada’s Rick Mercer - everybody go out and find of copy of Talking With Americans Right Now! - who are the standard bearers for sharp satire on this side of the pond but none of that trio can hold a candle to either Chris Morris or Iannucci, both of whom have been driving their points home in brilliantly vicious fashion for years now. Any Steve Coogan fans out there? Well, you lot can thanks Iannucci, in great part, for Coogan’s fame as well since it was Iannucci who wrote and produced the bulk of Coogan’s breakthrough show I’m Alan Partridge.

TORONTO -- Canadian actors on Monday began a strike that could not only see many continue working, but with a wage increase to boot, thanks to individual pacts producers have signed to avoid picket lines.
ACTRA, which represents about 21,000 performers, called the strike early Monday as talks between ACTRA and North American producers on a new collective agreement collapsed. At issue is how actors will be compensate for performances utilized on the Internet, cell phones and across other digital media.
But the Canadian industry has thus far suffered little disruption, thanks to continuation letters that many producers signed with ACTRA, exempting them from picketing or other job action.
At 3:20 a.m. Monday morning, American producers, the Canadian Film and Television Production Assn. and Quebec producers with the Association de producteurs de films et de television du Quebec, put a comprehensive package on the table that included a 9% wage increase over three years along with three pages of intricate language on how digital media residuals might work.
At 5:30 a.m., ACTRA representatives returned with a counter-offer that proposed bargaining on new media compensation be placed into the hands of a joint committee "with a mandate to report in one year."
If no agreement was reached after that period, ACTRA recommended non-binding mediation.
By dawn, the producers had rejected ACTRA's counter offer, and the actors union told their members to walk. The strike does not affect British Columbia, where actors have a separate labor deal with producers.
The last two Toronto productions to sign continuation letters -- Los Angeles-based Blueprint Entertainment's "The Best Years" and "Till Death Do Us Part" -- inked deals with ACTRA just before 8 a.m. Monday to ensure they too could continue shooting.
Other independent producers that have inked deals with ACTRA include Lions Gate Television's "Dresden Files", five Canadian episodes by Insight Prods. of NBC's "Deal or No Deal" and three series for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.: docu-drama "72 Hours True Crime" and comedies "The Rick Mercer Report" and "Royal Canadian Air Farce".
In all, 36 film or TV projects in Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan continued production Monday, with ACTRA members on set receiving an immediate 5% wage increase along with an additional 2% increase in retirement and insurance benefits.

ACTRA, which represents about 21,000 performers, called the strike early Monday as talks between ACTRA and North American producers on a new collective agreement collapsed. At 5:30 a.m., ACTRA representatives returned with a counter-offer that proposed bargaining on new media compensation be placed into the hands of a joint committee "with a mandate to report in one year."

OTTAWA -- Canadian TV performers and their union converged on Ottawa on Tuesday, demanding that the federal government restore cuts to the Canadian Television Fund and add to the public subsidy kitty. "It's hard to believe Canada could make an even bigger mess of its broadcasting system, but that's what we're about to do if things don't change," Canadian comedian-actor Rick Mercer said while waving the Canadian flag at a news conference here. "We are surrendering the most powerful medium we have. If we don't change course right now, Canadians will be listening to and watching Americans 24 hours a day, seven days a week on every channel they can click to." Brian Topp, executive director of the Toronto branch of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists(ACTRA), representing 18,000 performers, said the union was pushing for stable CTF funding and new broadcast rules that would require broadcasters to air more Canadian dramas during primetime. The government in the spring cut CAN$25 million ($18.8 million) from the CAN$100 million ($75.2 million) it contributes annually to the roughly CAN$200 million ($150.4 million) fund, which is the main source of subsidies for independent producers looking to get Canadian TV shows on primetime schedules here.

Garrett, Fey, Ripa, Carl Reiner and Canada's best-known television comedian, Rick Mercer, will host gala performances. As hosts, they will open the galas with a seven-minute spiel and introduce all the acts of the evening. Cosby will perform his own show, which is expected to last two hours. Colin Mochrie, Brad Sherwood and Greg Proops of "Whose Line Is It Anyway" will perform improv skits, just as they do on their show, from July 15-20. "We've had individuals from 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' perform at the festival, but we've never had evenings of performances by so many cast members together," Just for Laughs CEO Bruce Hills said. The 10-day festival, running July 10-20, features more than 290 different shows in both French and English, with a record 72 English-language club acts, Hills noted.
