Directed by Dominic Sena and written by Tim Metcalfe with Stephen Levy, Kalifornia is essentially a snapshot of the early 1990s. The film centers on a cute creative couple that feel something is missing in their lives, and so wish to go to California to liven up their work lives. Carrie, played by Michelle Forbes is a photographer who specializes in edgy black-and-white nudes and fetish shots, is the type of strong, take-no-shit woman who embodies the cultural shift that '90s ladies did --- a precursor to the Riot Grrls in black leather boots and red lipstick with an empowered view. Her boyfriend Brian, played...

Coronation Street's Sally Metcalfe will turn to politics next year. The soap stalwart, who is played by Sally Dynevor, is going to try to make her mark on the political scene in Weatherfield and even has some backing from the locals. While the comical character's husband Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) doesn't lend her much support on the political trail, she does manage to rally around the locals to get some serious backing. Adam Simon is hard to keep up with. He has the dizzying intellect and spellbinding rhetoric of a well caffeinated university professor.
The depth of Simon’s knowledge of the craft of horror filmmaking is far more indicative of his level of expertise than his filmography might lead you to believe.
Simon is best known for writing the 2009 film The Haunting in Connecticut, which was an unexpected success for a haunted house thriller. He is also known for his 1990’s B-movie classics Carnosaur and Brain Dead. With over 30 years of experience under his belt, Simon originally began in production and moved on to establish himself as a writer. He now makes his living writing horror for network television, a transition that has thus been very good to him.
One of last ‘graduates’ of the Roger Corman School of Film, Adam Simon has spent decades absorbing the ins and outs of creating a good film.

If there's one thing you can count on, it's that the Devil is red hot as possession films usually result in box office dollars no matter how good or bad. Honestly, we're dying for someone to finally get it right. Can Summit Entertainment's Exorcism Diairies do it?
Does it even stand a holy ghost of a chance?

Exorcism Diaries is being produced by Roy Lee, Sonny Mallhi and Doug Davison. The project was originally acquired by Summit as a pitch by Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe. John Sacchi will oversee the project for the studio.

Horror stories that are grounded in reality, and yet not bound by rules … these inspire Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe (The Haunting in Connecticut). And it’s what they appreciate about Seed, a powerful and terrifying novel written by Ania Ahlborn. Simon and Metcalfe have been selected by Amazon Studios to adapt Seed for the screen.
“Ania’s character insight and scenic eye managed to do what few horror writers even attempt, let alone succeed at – and that is, create a fictional world we instantly recognize as our own, as true,” Simon said. “Like Stephen King and a handful of Horror masters, she knows that writing great horror fiction is like directing lightning – your pole’s gotta be grounded.”
Seed was added to the Amazon Studios development slate last year, and Ahlborn says the experience has been “nothing but awesome.” And she’s a fan of Simon and Metcalfe. “I...

Farmiga on Higher Ground: Religious dogma and the search for spiritual enlightenment Academy Award-nominated actress Vera Farmiga discussed issues such as religious dogma, the striving for spiritual enlightenment, and the making of Higher Ground, her first tryout as a director, while chatting with entertainment journalist Tim Cogshell. (Although Higher Ground was released in 2011, Cogshell's interview was just recently published on YouTube.) Please scroll down to check out the six-minute interview. For the most part set in Iowa from the '60s to the '80s, Higher Ground follows a young couple (Farmiga and Boyd Holbrook), who become enmeshed with a radical Christian denomination. Real life interferes, however, something that eventually makes Farmiga's character begin to question her beliefs in god. Loosely based on Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark World: A Story of Faith Found, the film as co-written by Briggs and Tim Metcalfe. It had its world premiere...

The new role saw some viewers take to Twitter after noticing the familiar face. Chicago – Vera Farmiga’s “Higher Ground” is a unique choice for a modern actress to make for her directorial debut. It feels so inspired by the ensemble-driven dramas of the ’70s and ’80s that future generations could nearly mistake it for one. It’s also a film that tackles something that terrifies so many screenwriters — faith, religion, spirituality, and their place in the world. The final result can be a bit disjointed (as films based on memoirs often are) but this is an often-daring film that tackles rarely-dramatized issues. For that reason, it’s well-worth seeing.
Blu-ray Rating: 4.0/5.0
It’s also more dramatically accomplished than it may have been given credit for in its theatrical release. Farmiga has a strong eye for composition and paces her piece well. She may have been smart to get more involved in the writing process and could have edited a bit more tightly, but...

Higher Ground, Oscar-nominated Actress Vera Farmiga.s (Up In The Air) directing debut, is a moving drama about one woman.s religious faith. It.s based on the memoir This Dark World by Carolyn S. Briggs (who co-wrote the screenplay with Tim Metcalfe) and does something rarely seen in movies today; it treats Christianity in a frank and respectful way without judging or ridiculing those whose lives revolve around it. Higher Ground is a well-made, well-written, and superbly acted film that approaches its subject with intelligence and sensitivity. However one may feel about the fundamentalist brand of spirituality, or about religion in general, this film will make you feel the Power of the Lord over Man !! (or in this case, Woman) .....or maybe not. At the very least it presents, in Ms Farmiga, an exciting new filmmaking talent.

Briggs, Tim Metcalfe Starring: Vera Farmiga, Joshua Leonard, Dagmara Dominczyk, Donna Murphy, John Hawkes, Nina Arianda, Norbert Leo Butz, Michael Chemus, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Sean Mahon, Bill Irwin When I sat down to watch Vera Farmiga’s new film, Higher Ground, about one woman’s struggle to find her own voice while at the center of a close-knit fundamentalist Christian church, I was unsure what to expect, although I had my suspicions. Unfamiliar with This Dark World, the 2002 memoir by Carolyn S. Briggs, upon which this film is based, I approached this assignment with a number of preconceptions and yes, even prejudices. It’s difficult not to react in this way to a film that takes on religion and faith and spirituality because these are such personal matters. Beyond this, Higher Ground would also be an important film about big ideas, as well as the...

Chicago – The subject of religion in America is rarely portrayed honestly in the movies, with its power to both inspire or offend. Vera Farmiga makes her directorial debut and plays the lead character in the religious-themed “Higher Ground.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Points are immediately given to Ms. Farmiga for taking on the story, based on a memoir by Carolyn Briggs. No matter what you feel about organized religion, whether a church goer or secularist, Higher Ground is a thought provoking message film, and relevant to today. The story is uneven, but the sincerity of Farmiga’s direction is in every frame.
Farmiga plays Corinne, a woman who is shown at the beginning of the film being baptized in a river. She is a new convert to a small Evangelical Christian church and her path to that moment is shown in flashbacks from her 1960s childhood to the present, around the 1980s. Her...

Oscar-nominated actress Vera Farmiga speaks in winding contemplative sentences, and sometimes even ends her thoughts with a bashful dismissal of her own thoughts. When discussing omnipotent subjects like spirituality, she seems to answer to her questions with more questions.
Fitting it should be that Farmiga’s debut as a director, Higher Ground, should offer never-ending questions, with answers that we may never know. Starring in the film, she explores the life of a born-again Christian who sometimes falters in her spiritual strength. And like my conversation with her, Farmiga is about exploring the many curious factors of our entire existence.
I sat down with Vera Farmiga in a roundtable interview to discuss the many concepts that fueled her desire to make her directorial debut, what it was like to shoot a film while being four months pregnant, and what her character Alex from Up in the Air might have been...

Vera Farmiga is a wonderfully talented actress, but with her self-effacing laugh, easy disposition and comfortable slouch, she has a lot of work to do before she perfects the character of a swaggering director. She swears life behind the camera wasn’t a burning professional goal of hers, but Farmiga spent several years work-shopping a screenplay based on Carolyn Briggs’ “The Dark World” with Briggs and fellow writer Tim Metcalfe. The result is her wonderfully subtle directorial debut, “Higher Ground,” and it’s as full-bodied, honest and moving a portrait of a young, fundamentally religious family, and all the struggles they experience, as has ever been put to screen — perhaps no small...

Chicago – As an actress, Vera Farmiga broke out big in 2009 with her Oscar nominated performance in “Up in the Air.” Farmiga is now taking a total filmmaker’s role, playing the lead character and directing the new film, “Higher Ground.”
Farmiga began her career in the late 1990s, scoring a featured role in the TV series “Roar.” After working some supporting parts in TV and film, including HBO’s “Iron Jawed Angels” and “Touching Evil” (both 2004), she began to appear in more prominent feature films like “The Manchurian Candidate” (2004), “The Departed” (2006) and “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” (2008). More attention came in 2009 opposite George Clooney with her Oscar nominated role in “Up in the Air.”

The quiet drama Higher Ground gives the impression it could go on forever, watching its protagonist’s life unfold bit by bit: There are no big beats, no climax, barely even a sense of building narrative. In adapting her memoir This Dark World, screenwriter Carolyn Briggs (working with co-writer Tim Metcalfe and first-time director Vera Farmiga) resisted the urge to slant her life story to lead viewers to specific, facile conclusions. But while it feels organic and personal as a result—particularly in the details of the ’70s setting, with its terrible clothes and shifting morality—it’s also a ...

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

You won't be seeing too many of the films that premiered at Sundance 2011 get a major release this year, but that's not entirely bad news. Though most of the sales were on the small side, a solid 39 films walked away with a distribution deal of some kind. This means that -- whether it be through VOD or a limited theatrical release -- there's a good chance that any Sundance flicks you've been interested in checking out upon reading our coverage [1] will be available for viewing in some capacity. This may not be the glowing indie revival I've been hoping for, but given the state of Hollywood at the moment, I'll take it. As for the films that didn't get picked up, there may be hope for them yet. Weeks have passed since the Sundance Film Festival ended, but the sales keep on coming. The three latest pictures to be acquired...

Sony Pictures Classics bought North American, Australian and New Zealand rights to Higher Ground, the directorial debut of actress Vera Farmiga that made its debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. She stars with John Hawkes (Oscar-nominated for Winter's Bone), Donna Murphy and Joshua Leonard. The film is an adaptation of This Dark World: A Memoir of Salvation Found and Lost, by Carolyn S. Briggs, who wrote the script with Tim Metcalfe. It's a study of a woman's internal struggle with the primary love relationships in her life over two decades. The child of a traumatic divorce, she and her partner dedicate their lives to God and a small hippie church, but some of the machinations of that church give her pause. CAA brokered the deal. Sony Pictures Classics partners Michael Barker and Tom Bernard and exec Dylan Leiner add another acquisition title to what proved to be a bountiful Sundance.

Walking into a movie set in a born-again Christian commune, one might expect a bit of a freak show. But that isn’t what Vera Farmiga provides in “Higher Ground,” her directorial debut. The film is about the struggle to find meaning and belief in life and refuses to reduce people to caricatures, no matter their beliefs.
The people living in the commune in the 1970s may believe in conservative dogma, but they also have a bit of hippie in them. The era predates the time when fundamental Christianity became firmly engraved in right-wing politics. These guys are vegetarian health-food lovers who also want...

I don’t agree with most of the attacks on Hollywood by Christian fundamentalists, but there’s one criticism — and it’s a major one — that they’re absolutely right about: When it comes to portraying people of faith, Hollywood is worse than disrespectful — it’s shamefully disinterested. When a comedy like Saved, much as I liked it, passes for a vital vision of American Christian experience, you know that there’s something missing in our movie culture. (Robert Duvall’s The Apostle is a great film, but it’s about as far from the lives of everyday Christians as you can get.
