Jammin’ the Blues by Gjon Mili. Completed in 1944.
Gjon Mili is primarily known for his work as a photographer, particularly his portraits and experimental use of strobe lighting, much of which appeared in Life magazine.
In the book Norman Granz: The Man Who Used Jazz for Justice, author Tad Hershorn goes into great detail in the making and release of the film. After building a career as a photographer in New York City, Mili was flown to Los Angeles by Warner Bros. to see if he would be a good motion picture director. Mili proposed a jazz film to producer Gordon Hollingshead, which the studio moved forward on. Granz, the subject of Hershorn’s book, is listed as the Technical Director of the film in the opening credits (see below).

I love these 85th anniversary Oscar posters created by Olly Moss! They're very cool and very classy. Here's a description of the official poster above,
The Official poster of the 85th Oscars®, which features a new representation of the iconic Oscar statuette, is now on sale. The "light Oscar" is based on Gjon Mili's 1949 Life magazine photographs of Pablo Picasso. For the first time ever, the official poster includes the titles of all the nominated films.
I love the design of it, but the special edition poster below is even more awesome. 85 years of Oscars, 85 years of Best Picture greatness. Each Oscar statue in the poster was distinctly inspired by past Best Picture winners, from 1927 through 2012. Make sure to click on the poster to enlarge!

85 Oscars. 85 Years. 85 Best Picture Winners. The Academy (via Awards Daily), as part of the Gallery1988 artwork collaboration, has unveiled the official poster for the 85th Academy Awards this year. The actual official design, which features a new representation of the iconic statuette, shows the "light Oscar" which is based on Gjon Mili's 1949 Life magazine photographs of Pablo Picasso. It also includes the title of all of the nominated films this year. But besides that, they got Olly Moss to create a special 85th Anniversary poster, featuring an iconic character statuette for each and every Best Picture winner over the last 85 years. It's brilliant. This is why I love that the Academy is working with Gallery1988 to create stunning art like this. Straight from the Oscars is the official 85th Academy Awards (telecast) poster, with the "light Oscar" design: Here's the Olly Moss 85th Anniversary Oscars Poster, featuring 85 unique Oscar...

Chicago – Otto Preminger’s “Anatomy of a Murder” is a film that certainly still entertains modern audiences but should best be considered in light of when it came out in theaters. In 1959, courtroom dramas weren’t nearly as prevalent as they are in the era of “Law & Order” and discussions of rape and murder were not yet common in film. It may be hard for young audiences to believe but this spectacular film truly pushed the envelope of what could be done in a film like it and creatively succeeded in every way.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
Instead of going with the censorship that faced the movie (it was even banned in Chicago for some time), the country and the industry embraced “Anatomy of a Murder” and the movie was nominated for seven Oscars, including Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for James Stewart and Best Supporting Actor for George C. Scott (losing...
