The Horror-on- Sea Festival is Southend’s annual horror event, which showcases the talents of Independent filmmakers, through shorts and features over two weekends. This is the 6th year it has been running and this is my review of the festivals second weekend
Day 1: Friday 26th January – Double Feature 19:00pm
Feature – Mortuary Massacre
When Detective Giger (Todd Brown) attends a mortuary regarding several mysterious deaths which occurred on Halloween night, the local Mortician (Carl Crew) describes the backstory of three of the victims. Christopher James Miller delivers an experimental horror film which has some surreal visual shots to get into the psyche of the characters. Utilising his experience in special effects, this is one for the gore hounds, with plenty of visual gore, which is delivered with plenty of tongue and cheek humour.

Mortuary Massacre is a new anthology style horror from writer and director Chris J. Miller, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 26th January. I got chance to ask Chris about how the anthology came together, undertaking multiple role to get the film finished and overcoming several obstacles to get the film finished.
What can we expect from Mortuary Massacre?
Hopefully a bloody good time! It’s an anthology in the vein of the Amicus films, Body Bags (1993) or Creepshow (1982). So, expect a lot of practical makeup effects, some T & A, cannibalism, facial skinning, and even a Nazi zombie shows up to say hello.
How did the ideas for Mortuary Massacre come together as an anthology?
Back in 2011, my writing partner Sean Stearley and I wanted to make a film about a zombie cowboy, but we could never get past the 30-page mark, so...

Luke Skywalker has been described as many things through the years – a whiny farmboy, rebel insurgent, and all-wise Jedi Master – but a coward definitely isn’t one of them.
Indeed, while promoting The Last Jedi as part of Entertainment Weekly’s newly-unveiled December issue, Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill warned that his on-screen legend will be little more than a “broken warrior” by the time Rey touches down on Ahch-To.
Still reeling from the destruction of his Jedi Academy, for which he holds himself partly accountable (“I’ve seen this raw strength once before. It didn’t scare me then. It does now”), Luke will be a haunted shell of his former self when Star Wars: The Last Jedi begins, which leaves Rey with little choice but to rekindle his connection with the Force.

It was the announcement that sent shockwaves coursing through the Star Wars fanbase: After four months’ worth of production, Disney and Lucasfilm parted ways with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the erstwhile directors on the Han Solo anthology pic – now known as simply Solo: A Star Wars Story.
That was back in July, when the Powers That Be turned to Ron Howard as a last-minute substitution. Even by Lucasfilm’s own standards, it was a remarkably quick turnaround, and something the studio would later call upon once more while drafting J.J. Abrams in to replace Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) on Episode IX.
But on the topic of Solo, Lord and Miller were in attendance at the Vulture Festival in Los Angeles this past weekend. Truth be told, both creators have been relatively quiet since being removed from the high-profile gig, but here, Phil Lord stressed that both he and Miller...

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Armed with an Oscar and a distinctive filmmaking sensibility, Sofia Coppola may seem like the sort of filmmaker primed to make the jump to big studio movies. Who wouldn’t want more money and a bigger stage to spend it on? Well, Coppola doesn’t — and she’s right to stay away.
A recent article in Variety questioned if Coppola “may be trapping herself in a boutique bubble of her own,” asking if “perhaps her next move should be to work on a larger scale, to mix it up in some way, to shake herself out of her comfort zone.” Yet the filmmaker has roundly rejected such demands to somehow inflate her portfolio in the name of “growth,” balking at blockbusters and sequels, and resisting the notion that her projects should primarily exist to make a lot of money.

I never thought I’d hear about a massacre happening in a mortuary because, y’know, most of the people there are already dead. Anyway, in director Christopher James Miller’s Mortuary Massacre, Giger the mortician fills us in on how three of… Continue Reading →

Batman.s 75th anniversary may nearly be over, but the craze for the Caped Crusader won.t be ending anytime soon. Along with co-headlining Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Justice League movies, Batman will be back in Lego form when Will Arnett returns to voice DC.s Dark Knight in a Lego Movie - set for release in 2017. Not to worry though: this movie won.t be just a comedic romp for families to enjoy; it will also apparently be one the the greatest Batman tributes the world has ever seen! While chatting with Empire Online about their upcoming projects, directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller mentioned that the Lego Batman spinoff - which takes place in the same universe as the first Lego Movie will pay homage to all of Batman.s cinematic adventures over the decades. Said Miller, "Rest assured that every era of...

The Jump Street franchise has turned into one of the most surprisingly successful comedy movie series of the past few years. Not only have both 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street made a killing at the box office but they.ve both been critical darlings too. Because of these past triumphs, you would have thought that 23 Jump Street would be a formality. But the previous films. directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller still sound a little cagey. During a discussion with Empire Online the pair revealed that Rodney Rothman, who previously helped to write 22 Jump Street, is currently developing a script for another instalment to the franchise. However they still aren.t counting their chickens just yet, with Chris Miller stating:. It.s quite possible. We.ve been developing something with Rodney Rothman, who was one of the writers on 22 Jump Street, who.s written a script, and it.s yet...

Exclusive: Screenwriter Kurt Johnstad has covered both ancient warfare co-writing 300 and its sequel 300: Rise Of An Empire, and contemporary conflict with Act Of Valor. Now, he’s tackling a collision of completely different warriors in The Lost Legion, an epic action film he’ll write, with Dan Lin producing for Warner Bros. The Lost Legion is about the first encounter between two of the most powerful forces in the history of civilization, the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty of ancient China. In 53 BC, a Roman legion was defeated in the Middle East and the surviving Roman soldiers were sold into slavery in the far east, North of China in what is now known as Mongolia. An intrepid band of Chinese warriors freed the legionnaires from captivity, and teamed up to defend China from the fiercest army in history. Lin, who’s currently in production on the Chris Miller/Phil Lord-directed Lego,...

The Lego movie is gathering steam and the latest addition to the plastic block-buster (see what I did there?) is Morgan Freeman. The Warner Bros. movie will land brick by brick on February 28th and sees the likes of Will Arnett play Lego Batman. The Lego videogame franchise has been hugely popular, not to mention filling up bank accounts so it was only natural that a movie would land on the big screen. The games were funny at times, and if the movie keeps some of that attitude, Warner could be onto a winner, and considering its been written by the duo that wrote 21 Jump Street, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, I’d be expecting nothing more that hilarity. Elizabeth Banks is also pencilled in to lend her lungs and vocal talents to the animated movie. Nothing is known of her character, but Freeman is rumoured to be playing Vitruvius who was a Roman writer,...

Ordinarily, the idea of turning Lego into a movie is something that would make our stomach churn and eyes roll back into the far recesses of our head, but there is something about the approach "21 Jump Street" helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (along with Chris McKay) are bringing to the movie. The plot is pretty inventive, centering on Emmett, a regular everyday little Lego figure, who is mistaken as a MasterBuilder and suddenly becomes part of a group on a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing everything together. It's basically an excuse to run through a variety of Lego worlds, and a pretty good one at that, and with Chris Pratt taking the lead and Will Arnett stopping by as Batman (awesome), we now hear of two more voices pitching in. Deadline reports that Morgan Freeman and Elizabeth Banks are lending their pipes to the project. Lucius...

Once Upon A Time In Anatolia – Opening Scene
Nuri Bilge Ceylan is without a doubt one of the most exciting directors on the international scene. His sixth feature, Once Upon A Time In Anatolia won the Grand Prize at Cannes last year and it is easy to see why. This metaphysical road movie about life, death and the limits of knowledge opens with a brief prologue, a slow, steady out of focus zoom through a service station’s dirty window, eventually shifting into focus revealing a room where three guys eat, drink and converse. It seems like a simple setup but...

Tomorrow is the day where the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences celebrates the movies. We’ve waited all year and its finally here. By the time host Billy Crystal delivers his last punchline and concludes the 84th Academy Awards, the evening will have seen many celebrity-presenters appear on the Oscar stage at the Kodak Theatre.
Here’s my predictions for Hollywood’s big night.
Actor in a Leading Role
Demián Bichir in .A Better Life.
George Clooney in .The Descendants.
Jean Dujardin in .The Artist.
Gary Oldman in .Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Brad Pitt in .Moneyball.
Clooney’s performance was like none other he’s given before and with Slumdog Millionaire, Natalie Portman (Black Swan) and Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Fox Searchlight is on a roll. However, The Artist’s Dujardin will take home his first Academy Award.
Possible upset – Brad Pitt is an all around good guy...

I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

"Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the nominations for the 39th Annual Annie Awards. Given by the International Animated Film Society, the DreamWorks Animation sequel received 12 nods including Best Animated Feature. "Puss in Boots" and "Rango" each took nine noms. Pixar's "Cars 2" received seven nominations, while Disney's "Winnie the Pooh" took eight nods but was oddly missing in the Best Animated Feature category.

It’s official…Channing Tatum has one of America’s Most Wanted Celebrity Body Parts. Mark Wahlberg, Chan, and Tyson Beckford all topped the “Most Desired Male Body” list on the 14th Annual “Famed Hottest Looks” survey. The list, which is compiled by Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeons Dr. Richard Fleming and Dr. Toby Mayer, is based on their patient’s most popular requests in 2010.
I also found a few other project-related bits of news about Chan’s upcoming films ‘Haywire‘ , ‘21 Jump Street‘, and ‘Son of No One‘. Check out today’s Movie Bytes to get the latest scoop. Enjoy!!!

It truly has been a banner year for Chan! Since January, he has successfully released his romantic drama ‘Dear John‘, wrapped on four new films (Steven Soderbergh’s action-revenge spy thriller ‘Haywire‘, Dito Montiel’s crime thriller ‘Son of No One‘, Vince Vaughn’s comedy ‘The Dilemma‘ and ‘The Vow‘ with Rachel McAdams), shot the film shorts ‘Morgan & Destiny’s Eleventeenth Date‘ and ‘Ten Year‘ and reshoots for Kevin MacDonald’s Roman drama ‘The Eagle‘, executive produced and premiered the political documentary ‘Earth Made of Glass‘ at the Tribeca Film Festival, signed on to the inspirational detox drama ‘What’s Left of Us‘, the next ‘Avatar’ (aka ‘Ion‘), the...

Exclusive: Channing Tatum has jumped to the top of the list for the lead of Sony Pictures Entertainment's 21 Jump Street. I'm told that Tatum will soon be in negotiations to star alongside Jonah Hill. Production will begin in the spring. Based on the 1987 Stephen J. Cannell series that was one of the Fox Network's early successes and launched Johnny Depp, the movie was scripted by Michael Bacall based on a story he hatched with Hill. The film will be directed by Cloudy with the Chance of Meatballs helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller. I'm told that the studio has met with a bunch of potential leading men and that Tatum and Hill matched up well. Both look youthful, which helps since the film is about undercover officers who infiltrate schools to fight crime. UTA-repped Tatum's creating some pre-release buzz for his comic turn as the other man in...
