This post contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Visions" season 2.
The highlight of "Star Wars: Visions" season 2 was, for me, episode 5: "Journey to the Dark Head." Animated by South Korea's Studio Mir (which was responsible for the majority of episodes in "The Legend of Korra"), the short is set during a period of open war between the Jedi and the Sith. "Journey to the Dark Head" has the classical anime style that made "The Village Bride" (courtesy of Kinema Citrus) and "The Ninth Jedi" (the work of Production I.G.) such standouts of "Visions" season 1.
There are three main characters. One is Ara (Jang Ye Na/Ashley Park), a young girl born on the Outer Rim planet Dolgarak. On Ara's home is two large parallel statues, representing the light and dark side of the Force. Children are taught to read prophetic images left on the stones below these statues by rain.

Creator Sam Levinson and cinematographer Marcel Rév always wanted to shoot their HBO series “Euphoria” on film. But during Season 1 “there were a lot of reasons why we couldn’t do that,” Rév told IndieWire in a recent interview. Rév was happy with the digital look he and Levinson created for the show, but for Season 2 they agreed that film was essential in order to achieve the “deconstruction of memory” that they hoped to achieve. With the intention of finding a new color palette and a grain structure that would give the impression of old photographs, Rev and Levinson tested every possible option when it came to analog film — and ended up reviving an entire format in the process.
“We explored all the available film stocks and all the laboratory tweaks and tricks we could think of,” Rév remembered. “The closest thing to what we had in mind was 16mm Ektachrome,...

Filmmakers looking to shoot their movies in IMAX are about to have a lot more options.
Today, IMAX announced that it has begun developing its next generation of film cameras, with plans to release the first of four new cameras in late 2023. The company is working with Panavision, Kodak, and FotoKem on the project to integrate camera maintenance, film stock manufacturing, and post-production services.
The new models are expected to be an improvement over IMAX’s current offering of cameras that utilize their proprietary 65mm film. The new cameras will be quieter, with a series of new features added to enhance usability. In addition to the four new cameras, many existing IMAX cameras and lenses are expected to be updated and improved.
If that was not exciting enough, the company will be collaborating with some of Hollywood’s top visual artists on the camera designs. Major directors including Christopher Nolan...

Ten years ago, Disney’s “John Carter” opened nationwide.
Meant to be a potential franchise-starting blockbuster, it was savaged by critics, who called the film “wanly plodding and routine” (Entertainment Weekly), and “a giant, suffocating doughy feast of boredom” (The Guardian), and was met with indifference by general audiences, who simply didn’t show up..
Quickly, the movie and its fate took on a nearly mythical dimension – it wasn’t just a box office disappointment, it was a staggering creative and commercial failure, the kind of movie that is often mentioned in the same breath as other high-profile misfires like “Ishtar” or “Waterworld.”
But the actual story of “John Carter” – how it was conceived, what happened during production, and how it all fell apart thanks largely to a misguided marketing campaign – is much more complex and much more interesting.
Most Hollywood bombs are perceivable early on, through a toxic combination of untested filmmakers,...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker disappointed me personally, but I’ll be the first to admit it had some great visuals. Whatever that film lacks in storytelling, it mostly makes up for with J.J. Abrams‘ direction, Dan Mindel‘s cinematography, and the great effects work from Industrial Light and Magic. Like most Star Wars films, Rise of Skywalker had a coffee […]

The Skywalker Saga comes to a close with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the third film in the sequel trilogy and the final chapter in the story that began 42 years ago with George Lucas’ Star Wars: A New Hope. Happily, in the hands of returning director J.J. Abrams (The Force Awakens), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is an epic, thrilling and powerfully emotional conclusion that feels like the ending the series deserves.
The plot begins not long after the end of The Last Jedi (2017). The voice of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) has been heard across the galaxy and the First Order have assembled a fleet of Destroyers, intending to lay waste...

Fall 2019 provided us with a massively budgeted 35mm feature in the form of J.J. Abrams’s The Rise of Skywalker (shot by Dan Mindel and colored by Stefan Sonnenfeld at finishing house Company 3) and a surprisingly visible A24 mid-budget art film in the Safdie brothers’s Uncut Gems (shot by Darius Khondji and colored by Damien van der Cruyssen at The Mill). In each case, the choice to shoot on celluloid was rooted in what could be termed (charitably) as a nod to film history or (uncharitably) a nostalgic gesture. Maybe it was always going to be impossible to wrap this story up in a fully satisfying manner? Star Wars means so much to so many people, and often different things, after all. Look no further to the differing receptions in some parts of the fandom that J.J. Abrams received for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rian Johnson got for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Now, Abrams returns, stepping in for Colin Trevorrow, to conclude a new trilogy, as well as the full Saga, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The result, while entertaining, is certainly the weakest of the new installments. Despite some high points, the lows are pronounced, leading to at least a mild sense of disappointment. This is, of course, the ninth installment in the Star Wars Saga, concluding not only the modern trilogy, but the entirety of the story so far. Without spoiling things,...

As Star Wars concludes Luke Skywalker’s historic Lucasfilm storyline (for now), Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker confirms an odd trilogy takeaway: these three chapters do not play well together. J.J. Abrams once again embraces his safety netted desire to retrofit “new” explorations of galaxies far, far away around rehashed nostalgia frameworks. Where Rian Johnson challenged audiences in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Abrams retcons and cameos his way into a fan-servicing whirlwind that mistakes copious callbacks with having an identity. It’s still an expansive sci-fi blockbuster with intergalactic dogfights, space cowboy resilience, and fights against oppression, but I’m left feeling the same kind of brand-recognition entertainment much like Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Last night, during Monday Night Football, the world got one more look at the last Star Wars film for a while. Yes, a Final Trailer dropped at Halftime for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Episode IX of the Saga that’s in part defined blockbuster cinema for almost half a century. It looks positively epic, while also functioning as a real goodbye to a number of characters, both old and new. Disney and Lucasfilm are taking a small big screen break with the IP, as nothing is scheduled to hit theaters after this until 2022, so it’s shaping up to be a massive, once in a generation event. Luckily, the Trailer suggests that perfectly. You’ll be able to see it at the end of this post, but first…let’s get into it a bit! It’s almost impossible not to know about this movie, but just in case…...

For those of you wanting to get a glimpse at one of the sets of J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX, here's a photo that was shared by the director of photography Dan Mindel! It shows us an elaborate set built on a soundstage with some interesting structures being built. You can take a look at the photo below:
Space lights ..... unbeatable quality source of ambient lighting...6000 watts 6 lamps or 3000 watts 3 lamps!
A post shared by Dan Mindel Asc, Bsc,Sasc (@dan_mindel) on Aug 12, 2018 at 1:22pm Pdt
It's hard to even speculate what this set is supposed to be, but we'll eventually find out. Mindel has worked with Abrams on several of his film projects including The Last Jedi, so it's not surprising that Abrams would want to bring him back on for another Star Wars adventure. I would love to visit the set of a Star Wars film!

J.J. Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio currently face two big questions as they approach production on Star Wars: Episode IX.
For starters, how do they go about closing out Lucasfilm’s Skywalker Saga in a way that satisfies as much as it thrills? And perhaps most important of all: what do they do with the character of Luke, who met his end in the climax of The Last Jedi?
It’s no secret that Mark Hamill’s Jedi Master took his last breath soon after his Force projection deceived Kylo Ren on the salt plains of Crait, but the ambiguous nature of his ‘death’ has led many to believe that the galaxy’s most famous farm boy will be making a return come 2019 – Force ghost or not. After all, they can’t really close out the current trilogy without him, right?

On Sunday night, during the Super Bowl (and as a Jet fan, it’s a relief not to see the Patriots win for a change), a number of exciting Trailers dropped. There were fun looks at Avengers: Infinity War, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and more, but the one film that really captured the imagination was The Cloverfield Paradox. Once known as God Particle, this was always rumored to have been reconfigured as a Cloverfield outing, much like 10 Cloverfield Lane, and the Teaser, then Trailer made that clear. Not only had Netflix officially acquired it, but they released it right after the game ended. Having watched it, I can say that it’s unfortunately a mess of a movie, but for fans of this franchise, it offers some juicy tidbits. The film is a science fiction thriller, set within the Cloverfield universe.

It says a great deal about our topsy-turvy, lightning-paced cultural landscape that we can now watch a trailer for a (fairly) major film release one minute and be watching it on Netflix the next. In the case of The Cloverfield Paradox, that's exactly what happened: the secretive movie once known as The God Particle got its first trailer during the Super Bowl on the 4th February, and within hours, had made its debut on the streaming platform.
Then again, secrecy and strange surprises are written into the Cloverfield franchise's DNA. A found-footage take on the giant monster genre, the original film's viral marketing turned it into a major...

In today’s era of film-going, it can often feel like you’ve glimpsed a film from every angle before you even purchase a ticket. As the marketing machine spits out stills, trailers, featurettes, and TV spots at a perpetual rate many months before a release date–not to mention the set visits, press junkets, early screening tweets, and full reviews–it’s a miracle when a film can feel like a fresh experience. In a perfect synergy of events, the only company that could challenge the status quo and do such a surprise debut (Netflix) acquired perhaps the only franchise (Cloverfield) where skipping a theatrical release wouldn’t damage the bottom line and would generate enough excitement to eventize it. So, following a Super Bowl spot, just a few hours later, The Cloverfield Paradox was released, and, well, it’s now quite clear why Paramount sold it off. Not...

A long time ago, a grade-schooler got his hands on a spaceship. He followed the assembly instructions as best he could, snapping on the cannons, the landing gear, the tiny interstellar-chess table. Soon enough, Rian Johnson was holding his very own Millennium Falcon. "The first thing I did," he recalls, "was throw it across the room, to see how it would look flying." He grins. "And it broke."
Johnson grew up, went to film school, made some good stuff, including the entertainingly twisted 2012 sci-fi drama Looper. He's nearly 44 now, though...

The new trailer doesn’t answer all of our questions, but it does establish some key facts that only have us more excited to know more about the new series. Below are just a few of the things we learned by watching.
1. This Cast is Diverse (On Both a Gender and An Alien Level)
If a white human male spoke once in this trailer, it barely made an impression. (James Frain appears as Sarek, but in case you couldn’t tell from the ears, he’s playing a Vulcan.)
Otherwise, the spotlight is firmly on Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham,...

[Updated] Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day And Possibly Karl Urban All Confirmed For Pacific Rim: Uprising
Update: A now-deleted Instagram post from Pacific Rim: Uprising cinematographer Dan Mindel appeared to reveal that Karl Urban was involved in Steven S. DeKnight’s monstrous sequel, but it appears that’s not the case. /Film reached out to the Dredd star yesterday evening, to which he replied:
Hey Peter ,
No , I’m not part of this project ,
Look forward to seeing it though.

— Karl Urban (@KarlUrban) January 9, 2017
Original story: Another set photo has emerged from Pacific Rim: Uprising that seemingly appears to confirm the sequel’s cast – and there’s one big surprise.
Karl Urban, star of Dredd and recently Star Trek Beyond, is listed alongside the likes of Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. Neither Legendary nor Warner Bros. has announced anything official at the time of writing, but word is that the latter two are back to reprise their roles as Mako Mori and Dr.

It looks like a few actors from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim will be returning for the sequel. Thanks to a recent photo posted by cinematographer Dan Mindel via Instagram, we learn that Rinko Kikuchi will reprise her role as Mako Mori, and it confirms that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman will be back as well. The big piece of news it reveals is that Karl Urban seems to have joined the cast as well, which is freakin' awesome! All that information is on a little sticker placed on the side of the camera.
The all join the previously cast John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), who was cast as the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost, as well as Scott Eastwood and Cailee Spaeny. I just love that Urban will most likely be in the film. This is the kind of film franchise that he's perfect for.

Pacific Rim: Uprising cinematographer Dan Mindel shared a new image to his Instagram page (via Omega Underground) which tells us quite a lot about the cast situation. We had been led to believe that neither of the original film's leads (Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi) would be returning for Steven S. DeKnight's currently shooting sequel, but this confirms that the latter will indeed be back as Mako Mori. It looks like Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are also set to return as scientists Newt and Gottlieb. Most interestingly, the image seems to reveal that Karl Urban (Dredd, Star Trek Beyond, Thor: Ragnarok) will have a role in the movie, playing a character with the surname Quan. Some of the other character's names are also visible. Pacific Rim: Uprising is set to hit theaters on February 23, 2018.

Industrial Light & Magic has always been at its best with "Star Wars," and the VFX powerhouse that George Lucas launched 40 years ago certainly upped its game for the return of the signature franchise, and is also the Oscar frontrunner. Read More: "The Impactful 8: Ranking the Top Contenders in the VFX Oscar Race" Maintaining the look and feel of the first trilogy with only the most sensible modifications was important to J.J. Abrams and the filmmakers because we are returning to the same universe and not that much has really changed in 30 years, as "history repeats itself" on so many levels. That is why cinematographer Dan Mindel shot on film, and why production design (Rick Carter and Darren Gilford), costume design (Michael Kaplan), and VFX (Roger Guyett) worked jointly from the inside out to convey an organic sense of continuity in keeping with the legendary iconography. If Disney spent their $4 billion wisely and Star Wars really is here to stay, there will be only so many opportunities to begin on fresh ground. J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan might have planted their feet as well as possible when their opening text crawl, all set to that iconic theme, puts us up to speed with these four words: “Luke Skywalker has vanished.” It’s hardly a spoiler to say that, yes, Mark Hamill‘s now-legendary Jedi will appear before us — visibly older, somewhat weathered, a bit paunchier, and with the more-salt-than-pepper goatee that tells us we’re in the presence a wise man — before this seventh episode irises out of its action and into the countless installments that are sure to follow. For as much as the material surrounding it can lack the fortitude to truly stand on its own, it’s this through line that finally dispels...

At one point before the premiere last night, I heard an ardent fan say that it is impossible to review a movie like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." I understand what he means, particularly because he's coming to it as a fan first and foremost, but that's obviously not true. While I am a first-generation "Star Wars" freak, chemically transformed by the experience of seeing the first film in 1977, I am also a working film critic, and at heart, "The Force Awakens" is indeed "just" a movie. It's a very good movie, I'd say, and should entertain audiences both deeply and casually invested in the ongoing saga of the Skywalker family. Made with a profound sense of passion and respect by an entire generation of filmmakers and performers who were influenced by the original films, this is a deeply affectionate film, and that affection, that honestly felt love, is what...
