A middling entry in the genre of blow-it-up big action spectacles, Paul Wendkos’ Spain-filmed western gives us all the excitement promised by the poster, but with some cardboard characters and lumpy storytelling. George Peppard is on the job, however, and once again proves he can carry a big picture, flaws and all.

A few weeks ago, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with director Steve Mitchell about his new documentary, King Cohen, which profiles maverick filmmaker Larry Cohen and his wild journey throughout his decades-spanning career (you can read that interview Here). And now that this writer finally had the opportunity to see King Cohen as part of the 2017 Fantastic Fest lineup, I had a few more questions for Mitchell, who managed to craft an entertaining, informative, and heartfelt celebration of a truly one-of-a-kind talent in Cohen.
Great to catch up with you again, Steve. You did a great job with this project, and I loved how it balanced out all these things I’ve enjoyed about Larry’s career so far, and also dove into a lot of things I had no idea about. Is there an art to balancing out the stuff that fans are going to expect versus...

While his roots may be in television, it’s most likely his indelible work in cinema as a writer/director/producer that has made filmmaking maverick Larry Cohen such an influential force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. With a professional career that kicked off in the late 1950s, Cohen has yet to slow down at all, and it’s that enduring creative spirit that King Cohen documentarian Steve Mitchell celebrates in his loving and lively look back at the brazen trail that Cohen has journeyed on thus far.
In King Cohen, Mitchell takes us all the way back to the beginning of Cohen’s life, as we hear stories about Larry’s childhood in New York City, and how his experiences growing up there continued to define him, especially in his film work, which was usually set around the Big Apple, or in New York in general. Larry Cohen is a legend. When you hear the name as a genre fan, you usually think of such classics as Q, The Winged Serpent, It's Alive, God Told Me To, and The Stuff. Now, through Steve Mitchell's fun documentary King Cohen, you may learn a lot more about this legendary writer/director/producer. Hot off the Fantasia world premiere, Fantastic Fest hosts the U.S. premiere of King Cohen on Friday September 22 at 5:45pm, with Cohen himself in attendance. (An encore screening will play on Monday, September 25 at 11:30 am.) I was able to speak to Cohen and learned a great deal about making indie films. Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

"Anybody will put up with anything if they think a movie is being shot." These are words of wisdom, but also kind of a guerrilla filmmaking mission statement, from filmmaker Larry Cohen. Steve Mitchell's King Cohen offers a breathless sprint through the writer-director-producer's prolific 'lets just shoot the damn movie!' ethos, from writing for NBC's Kraft Theatre in the era of live television in the late 1950s through episodic shows like The Fugitive and Branded -- "The bulk of the series, Dude" -- in the 1960s to directing racy social commentary (Bone, Black Caesar, God Told Me To, The Private Lives of J. Edgar Hoover) in the 1970s and gonzo genre-mashing creature features in the 1980s (Q: The Winged Serpent, The Stuff), before finally settling with writing mid-tier Hollywood...

It's been awhile since we learned that a Friday The 13th TV series was in development for The CW. Unfortunately, the network dropped the project saying:
“We didn’t believe it was a sustainable script or a sustainable series. It was a very good pilot, but not a sustainable series.”
Well, that didn't stop series creators and writers Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle from refining the project and shopping it around. They won't let their vision die and are still developing the series.
During a recent interview on Shock Waves podcast, Friday The 13th franchise creator Sean S. Cunningham talked about what they are trying to accomplish. He is working on the series with Mitchell and Van Sickle and he explains that they are looking to develop a series that will make fans happy and build a nightmarish world with great characters.

The CW won’t be heading to Camp Crystal Lake after all, as it has been confirmed that the previously in-development Friday the 13th series is no longer moving forward at the network.
Initially in development at The CW since last year, the Friday the 13th TV series, tentatively titled Crystal Lake Chronicles, was discussed at the Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation in Beverly Hills. According to EW, here’s what CW president Mark Pedowitz had to say about the series, which showed promise with its pilot but was not viewed as their best option for a longterm show:
“The bottom line is we felt we had stronger things to go with, and we didn’t go forward with it. It was well-written, it was darker than we wanted it to be, and we didn’t believe it had sustainability … We didn’t believe that it was a sustainable script,...

Since the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th, there's been a lot of talk about the future of the franchise. Aside from the tons of movie talk we've heard, there were also plans about a year ago for The CW to develop the concept into a TV series. A lot has changed since then, and at the network's Television Critics Association panel, CW president Mark Pedowitz said that the show is no longer in the works at the company.
“We didn’t believe it was a sustainable script or a sustainable series. It was a very good pilot, but not a sustainable series.”
That's one man's opinion, but Pedowitz also said that writers Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle will be able to shop their concept around to other networks as soon as The CW's option on the material expires in January. So while it sounds like we won't be...

Last August, former HitFix staffer Roth Cornet and I pondered the ways in which the CW's planned Friday the 13th TV series could potentially not suck. Turns out we needn't have bothered! At Thursday's Television Critics' Association, the network's president Mark Pedowitz revealed that the slasher spinoff series is as good as dead. “The bottom line is we felt we had stronger things to go with, and we didn’t go forward with it,” said Pedowitz (via EW). “It was well-written, it was darker than we wanted it to be, and we didn’t believe it had sustainability … We didn’t believe that it was a sustainable script, a sustainable series. It was a very good pilot, but not a sustainable series.” The show -- under the working title of Crystal Lake Chronicles -- would have taken a "meta" approach by setting the events in a world where the Friday...

Last year came word that The CW network had picked up a new "Friday the 13th" TV series which "The Pretender" creators Steven Long Mitchell and Craig W. Van Sickle would pen.
That series would follow a detective who has been searching for his missing brother, a disappearance believed to tie into the re-emergence of Jason Voorhees, who was long thought to be dead but is know wreaking havoc once again in Crystal Lake.
Now a new report at Bloody-Disgusting claims The CW has halted plans to resurrect Jason Voorhees. They say the network wasn't onboard with that idea:
"So what happened? According to my source, the network didn't jibe with the concept for the series. What was the concept? Apparently, that's the problem. After months of development, there was still no real concept for the series, causing network execs to re-think bringing Friday the 13th (back) to the small screen.

We’ve all heard the unfortunate side effects of living the rock n’ roll lifestyle. For evidence of just how brutal the combination of too much money, fame, and access to drugs can be, we need look no further than the fateful 27 Club, which has claimed far too many young rockstars.
Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse…all of them took the long walk to the other side. And then there are some examples of musicians pushing the envelope in extreme ways that leave you wondering how they didn’t die.
Some rockstars are just luckier than others and have somehow managed to escape the icy grip of death–a few on multiple occasions. Nikki Sixx and Keith Richards are the poster boys for rockstars who, despite all logic and historical precedent, have astonishingly managed to not be dead yet.

It's true! A "Friday the 13th" TV reboot is happening on the CW. The series, which comes from "The Pretender" creators Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, is being envisioned as a more "grounded," "sophisticated" take on the masked murderer and will center on "the ongoing quest of a detective’s search for his missing brother that is somehow tied to Jason Vorhees, a long thought dead serial killer who has now returned to wreak havoc in the new Crystal Lake." Luckily for fans, the show will actually be featuring Jason and not a pair of intrepid antique store owners (ahem, ahem), but I've got a few other suggestions on how to make this new iteration of the long-running franchise resonate with fans both old and new. The history of horror cinema has been filled with iconic villains who end up becoming the anchor of a franchise, being the only consistent element across several movies. One such villain is Jason Voorhees, who first made an appearance in the 1980 film Friday the 13th, and has subsequently appeared in eleven other movies, as well as comic books and novels, including a crossover with The Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Freddy Krueger in 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason. Now, however, the villain will be coming to the small screen, as The CW has announced that they are formally working on a tv adaptation of the horror franchise.

Deadline reports that the CW wants to bring the infamous serial killer Jason Voorhees back from the dead for a Friday the 13th TV show. Mark Pedowitz, the network's president, announced the news at a Tuesday TCA session, noting that the story line would be semi-based on those within the long-running film franchise. Deadline has reason to believe the show will follow "the masked Jason with a stronger feel of grounded reality," as well as "a detective’s search for his missing brother." The project is still very much in development, though; Pretender creators Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle are writing the script. Other logistics and personnel info were not immediately available.

Friday the 13th is getting a new lease of life on The CW.
A new TV series based on the horror franchise featuring masked serial killer Jason Voorhees is officially in development. It will be reimagined by writers Steve Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle, who created NBC's drama The Pretender.
Horror's Final Girls: What happened to the stars of Halloween, Scream and more slasher classics?
The duo are planning a horror/crime thriller firmly grounded in reality, according to Deadline, with a detective's search for his missing brother throwing up a connection to Jason, who was long believed dead.
Executive producers on the hour-long series will include Sean S Cunningham, who directed the original movie in 1980.
5 horror movies that could be TV shows
Talk of a possible Friday the 13th TV adaptation first surfaced a year ago.
A series of 12 feature films have explored Jason's relationship to Crystal Lake and his own twisted family dynamic.

Stop the press. After a shorter-than-anticipated hiatus, Mumford & Sons are back in business, but this time, they’ve kicked the banjo to one side, with an electric album named Wilder Mind.
It’s been three years since the band’s thumping second album Babel was released, and three years on top of that since their debut, Sigh No More, set Mumford on the way to the world stage.
The formula is tried and tested, and importantly it works. The banjo-laden, foot-stomping tunes burst onto the mainstream music scene, despite dividing music fans, and their style is loved by millions. Then came the hiatus.
Then came band member Winston Marshall’s infamous rant after being asked whether the band had killed the banjo: “I think ‘killed’ is an understatement. We murdered it. We let it, yeah – f*** the banjo. I f***ing hate the banjo.” Ultimately, when Wilder Mind was announced,...

It’s normal for bust-ups to occur at a football club – players can become disillusioned and disgruntled waiting on the sidelines for an opportunity, and tempers can flare due to a risky challenge in training. Fall-outs and bust-ups are certainly not a novelty in this sport, but at Liverpool, there have been quite a few bust-ups over the years which have led to a subsequent departure.
For such a harmonious club which plays on its’ emotional ties and title as a ‘family’ club, it may come as something of a surprise to learn how many players have actually fallen out with their managers in recent years. Interestingly, there is a common theme in this list, with one man’s distant and harsh demeanour seemingly alienating most of his squad during his tenure, which consequently led to some friction.
In more cases than not, when a bust-up occurs,...

In celebration of the Milestones show at Geppi Entertainment Museum, we present this piece, originally published in the San Diego Comic-Con International Souvenir Book 2013.
Twenty years. Daaaaamn.
I spent a lot of time hanging around Milestone when they were first starting up. I was working around the corner from their 23rd St. offices at a digital pre-press house, where DC Comics was getting their painted covers scanned and separated. And I’d worked at DC and knew a lot of the folks there informally, and Milestone in those days was a very informal place. There was no standing on ceremony, if you wanted to show up and pitch in, you could just do that. And I did, bringing over lots of fonts for typesetting on a Mac and helping out with little production things here and there— I couldn’t do much because of my full-time job, but they were a start-up,...

Two BBC news executives resigned on Monday pending the results of an internal investigation into the alleged cover-up of two pedophilia scandals. Days after the network's director-general George Entwistle quit, BBC news director Helen Boaden and her deputy Steve Mitchell were asked to "step aside" but said they "expect to then return to their positions" after an internal inquiry. The executive shake-up comes amid a ballooning scandal over accusations that the BBC canned an investigation by its "Newsnight" current affairs show into late children's TV star Jimmy Savile. Savile allegedly coerced scores...

Stars Wars: The Clone Wars Episode 8 – Evil Plans
Written by Steve Mitchell, Craig Van Sickle | Directed by Brian Kalin O’Connell
“In the middle of a routine shopping trip on Coruscant C-3Po is abducted by the bounty hunter Cad Bane. Bane is looking for information about the Senate building on behalf of Jabba the Hutt. Finding C-3Po devoid of useful information, Bane and his accomplices kidnap R2-D2 and extract the vital data, before memory wiping the droids of the incident, and letting them on their way. The floor-plans and security details of the Senate building are part of a plot engineered by the Hutt families to free their imprisoned brother, Ziro the Hutt, who holds potentially damaging information about Hutt activities.”
An episode very reminiscent of the 1985 animated show Star Wars: Droids, with R2, 3Po, and their bumbling misadventures as the focus for this week’s episode.

If the record breaking ratings for SyFy's Tin Man mini-series proved anything to us last summer it was that there is still a stronghold of people in the world who are more than willing to take a trip to the wonderful land of Oz - even if upon arrival they realize they are in for a blasphemous re-imagining and not the adventure they remember from childhood.
No, I didn't like Jill Blotevogel and Steven Long Mitchell's Tin Man all that much. Mostly, I think it was because it wasn't a new adventure, but rather a tepid post-modern rehash of the same old story with mid-level production values. "Dark Oz" on the other hand, is an entirely new twist on the property as well as a a whole new adventure that, if made right,...
