In 1994, he filed the first law suit against 13 tobacco companies by a
state, demanding cigarette manufacturers reimburse Mississippi for the
cost of health care related to tobacco-caused illnesses. The law suit
resulted in the tobacco companies paying Mississippi a $4.1 billion
settlement.
