HBO Max declined to comment.
Robinson has a busy plate. She signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. Film director Richard Rush, perhaps best known for his unorthodox and original 1980 film The Stunt Man, passed away in Los Angeles, CA on Thursday, April 8, 2021 just one week shy of what would have been his 92nd birthday following years of health issues. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Claude (née Claude Cuveraux); his son, Anthony; and his grandson, Shayne.
Mr. Rush was born on Monday, April 15, 1929 in New York City and broke into the film industry through the UCLA film program and later worked for producer and director Roger Corman as the co-writer and director of Too Soon to Love (1960), alternatively titled High School Honeymoon, about high school sweethearts who go all the way and the girl ends up pregnant. This was heady subject matter for the time and Jack Nicholson has a small role in the film.

Angela Robinson has signed a multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group
Under the terms of the agreement, the director and writer of the GLAAD Media Award and Saturn Award-nominated independent drama “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” will develop and create original scripted television programming for all Warner Bros. platforms, which includes on-demand and streaming services like WarnerMedia’s HBOMax, premium and basic cable channels and broadcast networks. Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed, but sources say that the deal is valued in the eight figure range.
Most recently, Robinson executive produced the film “Passing,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this past January. Crystal Reed and Tahirah Sharif have signed on to star in Dead Giveaway, an indie comedy-thriller that is being directed by Ian Kimble.
The pic, which was written by Kimble, follows Lia (Reed) and Jill (Sharif). Jill is a hard-partying Philadelphian. This has resulted in some epic nights and legendary stories. What she never expected is waking up next to a stranger who has been brutally stabbed to death in her own bed. On this particular Sunday, that is exactly what she wakes up to. She and Lia spend their day trying to solve the mystery of the cadaver in Jill’s bed and still make it to brunch in time for mimosas.
Suzann Toni and Andrew Vogel of Dynasty Pictures will produce the indie, which will film in Philadelphia, Pa.
Reed is repped by ICM Partners and Silver Lining Entertainment.

As Disney quietly disappears huge swathes of film history into its vaults, I'm going to spend 2020 celebrating Twentieth Century Fox and the Fox Film Corporation's films, what one might call their output if only someone were putting it out.***Henry King was a reliable workhorse for Fox for most of his career: thirty years of it. He was there before the Fox Film Corporation merged with Twentieth Century. He brought skill and sensitivity to his work, and certain of his films, particularly those centered around a sentimental but sincere love of Americana, are real works of Hollywood art.He became the third director to tackle CinemaScope with King of the Khyber Rifles (1953), a very loose remake of John Ford's The Black Watch (1929). By now, though little in the way of a working theory existed on effective use of widescreen, certain problems were becoming apparent: composing for the (extremely) wide frame,...

Francesca Reale, Jaboukie Young-White, Catherine Cohen (High Maintenance), and Brian Muller (The Deuce) star in Dating in New York, an indie comedy from first-time feature helmer Jonah Feingold. Set in New York, the film explores modern dating tropes such as ghosting, orbiting, and profound concepts like an “I miss you” text. Jerry Ferrara, Arturo Castro, Taylor Hill (Broken Heart Gallery), Alex Moffat (SNL), Eva Victor (Comedy Central), and Yedoye Travis (Comedy Central) co-star. The story centers on Wendy and Milo (Reale and Young-White) who, both packing their own emotional baggage (literally), are thrown together to help navigate the city and each other’s dating lives. Their L-Train fueled-quest for love ultimately begs the question: can ‘happily ever after’ truly exist in the age of read receipts? Joaquin Acrich produced the pic with Mason Novick,...

Yes, you could spend your holiday in the company of family and friends. But wouldn’t you rather curl up with a new book centered on cinema? There are new options aplenty, but let’s start with the latest from one of the most insightful, compelling voices we have: the great Karina Longworth.
Seduction: Sex, Lies, and Stardom in Howard Hughes’s Hollywood by Karina Longworth (Custom House)
Is there more to say about Howard Hughes after decades of biographies and films? Indeed, and the latest from Longworth, the host of the essential podcast You Must Remember This, is evidence. The focus in Seduction is not only Hughes himself, but the many women in the mega-tycoon’s orbit. These include household names like Katharine Hepburn but also figures like silent star Billie Dove and Mighty Joe Young star Terry Moore. Longworth brings these women to vivid life, and captures the absurdity of Hughes’s universe.

Burt Lancaster would’ve celebrated his 105th birthday on November 2, 2018. The Oscar-winning actor appeared in dozens of movies until his death in 1994. But which titles are among his finest? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 20 of Lancaster’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1913, Lancaster got into acting after performing as an acrobat in the circus. He made his movie debut in 1946 with a leading role in the quintessential noir thriller “The Killers” (1946). He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for Fred Zinnemann‘s wartime drama “From Here to Eternity” (1953), winning the prize just seven years later for playing a fast-talking preacher in “Elmer Gantry” (1960). Lancaster would compete twice more in the category (“Birdman of Alcatraz” in 1962 and “Atlantic City” in 1981).

Twin Peaks alum Sherilyn Fenn is set in the lead role of silent film star Madame Alla Nazimova in Silent Life, an indie biopic about Rudolph Valentino (a.k.a. Hollywood’s original Latin Lover) from director Vladislav Kozlov, who will play Valentino in the film.
Fenn’s Madame Alla Nazimova, a Russian Jewish émigré from Crimea, was a popular Broadway actress due to her fierce feminist image in the pacifist drama War Brides. One of her notable films was the 1921 silent adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ Camille, which she produced and starred opposite Rudolph Valentino.

As you might be able to tell from the year in the post title, I’ve gotten more than a little lackadaisical about keeping up with this annual series of the best in comics created by North Americans. (I reviewed 2006 at the beginning of 2007, 2007 later in 2007, 2008 in 2008, 2009 in 2009, 2010 in 2011 after the next book was published, 2011 in 2012, 2012 in 2013, 2014 in 2014, and have so far missed 2015, 2016, and 2017. If it were still my job to keep up with things being published, I would probably be deeply ashamed of myself — but it hasn’t been for a decade now, so I’m not.)
But I’m still interested in good comics, as always. So here I finally am with the Jeff Smith-edited The Best American Comics 2013 , only four and a half years after it was published and six-and-a-half to seven-and-a-half years after the work in it originally appeared.

One of the best Hollywood historical epics takes Technicolor to Mexico for a Production Code version of La conquista: the Inquisition is still bad, but the Church is exonerated. Likewise with the invasion — Cesar Romero embodies a marvelous Hernán Cortés, substantially less murderous than the one we now know from accurate history books. Tyrone Power is the heartthrob hero and newcomer Jean Peters the lowborn girl who loves him. The magnificent scenery is matched by the music score of Alfred Newman.

Pity the poor exhibitors in 1953 that splurged on 3-D equipment, only to see the payroll soar and the profits fall. Nope, Anamorphic Widescreen was the innovation that swept the world. It proved perfect for stories with scenic grandeur, such as Fox’s very early mini-epic shot on Florida locations. Thanks to Bernard Herrmann’s impressive music score, this one’s not going away.

The book was raw & dirty, and did you read what that girl did with that guy on page 167? Racking up a stack of Oscar nominations, Peyton Place became one of the big hits of its year, launched the careers of several young actors, and proved that Hollywood could pasteurize most any so-called un-filmable book. Lana Turner is the nominal star but the leading actress is Diane Varsi, in her film debut.

A Tribute to King Kong takes place as part of the The St. Louis International Film Festival Sunday, Nov. 6 beginning at 6:00pm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium. The first film screened will be the new documentary Long Live The King, which explores the enduring fascination with one of the biggest stars — both literally and figuratively — in Hollywood history: the mighty King Kong. Produced and directed by Frank Dietz and Trish Geiger, the creative team behind the award-winning “Beast Wishes,” the documentary devotes primary attention to the 1933 classic, celebrating the contributions of filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, stars Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, and Bruce Cabot, writer Edgar Wallace, and especially stop-motion innovator Willis O’Brien. But Kong’s legacy is also fully detailed: the sequel “Son of Kong,” the cinematic kin “Mighty Joe Young,” the Dino DeLaurentis and Peter Jackson remakes, even the Japanese versions by Toho Studios.

Special effects legend Ray Harryhausen, whose dazzling and innovative visual effects work on fantasy adventure films such as Jason And The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad passed away in 2013 at age 92. In 1933, the then-13-year-old Ray Harryhausen saw King Kong at a Hollywood theater and was inspired – not only by Kong, who was clearly not just a man in a gorilla suit, but also by the dinosaurs. He came out of the theatre “stunned and haunted. I like weird films, and because of this fact I tend to experience some truly strange and unique movies. Aimy in a Cage may be a step too far into the “weird” for some, but if you are a fan of the likes of A Clockwork Orange it may just push the right buttons for you.
Aimy Micry (Allisyn Ashley Arm) is a free spirited artistic girl who lives with her grandma (Terry Moore) who hates her. Seemingly out of control, her Grandmother and the rest of her family and friends use different methods to try and control Aimy, while an oncoming plague threatens to kill them all.

Let’s talk remakes again. Our series continues as we look at a remake which is just as good--and maybe better--than the original. Cinelinx goes ape this week as we look at the 1998 remake of Mighty Joe Young.
As cinematic simians go, Joe Young is not as well remembered as King Kong or Caesar from the Planet of the Apes films, but the original 1948 film has enough of a cult following to rate a remake, which came out exactly 50 years later.
The 1948 version of Mighty Joe Young was made by some of the same people as the classic King Kong (1933) was. It had the same writer (Ruth Rose), one of the same lead actors (Robert Armstrong) and the guy who did the Kong SFX (Willis O’Brien.) Fun Fact: O’Brien trained FX legend Ray Harryhausen, who also worked on this film as Willis’ First Tech. But I digress. The...

It is time for a dip into the surreal. Hooroo Jackson's fantasy and horror film Aimy in a Cage is moving towards a 2016 release date. The film involves several characters living behind strong walls as a virus rages outside. A strange surgery is performed on the inhabitants, to prevent them from acting out. As well, Aimy in a Cage stars Crispin Glover (Simon Says), Allisyn Ashley Arm, Terry Moore and Paz de la Huerta. A preview of the film's launch, through Osiris Entertainment, is hosted here. Film fans will notice a surreal element in the film's latest trailer. The clip shows characters in period costumes, acting in a bizarre fashion. Settings and costumes change in lighting and time periods. Meanwhile, the music has a carnival-like tone. The film's story takes place in an offbeat world. Here, the protagonist's mind is altered and so is the viewer's. Aimy in a Cage was funded through Bitcoin.

In honor of Halloween, I once again have a special essay-article up, and this time I can name the contributor. Randall William Cook rates special celebrity status around DVD Savant despite being a friend from way, way back. I hope he's writing a book about his career, because his Hollywood experiences range far afield, from UCLA film school, to acting and directing film and TV, to doing special make-ups, animation direction, front-rank stop motion direction, and second unit direction on big features. Heavily into digital work since the 1990s, Randy supervised character animation and sequence direction for the three Lord of the Rings movies, netting him an amazing three Oscars, three years straight. And he's still the same guy from college -- a new Harryhausen or Welles disc comes out, and he wants to know all about it. Oh, and Cook is a fine writer as well -- as I think this thoughtful piece shows.

Coleen Gray in 'The Sleeping City' with Richard Conte. Coleen Gray after Fox: B Westerns and films noirs (See previous post: “Coleen Gray Actress: From Red River to Film Noir 'Good Girls'.”) Regarding the demise of her Fox career (the year after her divorce from Rod Amateau), Coleen Gray would recall for Confessions of a Scream Queen author Matt Beckoff: I thought that was the end of the world and that I was a total failure. I was a mass of insecurity and depended on agents. … Whether it was an 'A' picture or a 'B' picture didn't bother me. It could be a Western movie, a sci-fi film. A job was a job. You did the best with the script that you had. Fox had dropped Gray at a time of dramatic upheavals in the American film industry: fast-dwindling box office receipts as a result of competition from television,...

Ingrid Bergman ca. early 1940s. Ingrid Bergman movies on TCM: From the artificial 'Gaslight' to the magisterial 'Autumn Sonata' Two days ago, Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” series highlighted the film career of Greta Garbo. Today, Aug. 28, '15, TCM is focusing on another Swedish actress, three-time Academy Award winner Ingrid Bergman, who would have turned 100 years old tomorrow. TCM has likely aired most of Bergman's Hollywood films, and at least some of her early Swedish work. As a result, today's only premiere is Fielder Cook's little-seen and little-remembered From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (1973), about two bored kids (Sally Prager, Johnny Doran) who run away from home and end up at New York City's Metropolitan Museum. Obviously, this is no A Night at the Museum – and that's a major plus. Bergman plays an elderly art lover who takes an interest in them; her...

Theodore Bikel. Theodore Bikel dead at 91: Oscar-nominated actor and folk singer best known for stage musicals 'The Sound of Music,' 'Fiddler on the Roof' Folk singer, social and union activist, and stage, film, and television actor Theodore Bikel, best remembered for starring in the Broadway musical The Sound of Music and, throughout the U.S., in Fiddler on the Roof, died Monday morning (July 20, '15) of "natural causes" at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. The Austrian-born Bikel – as Theodore Meir Bikel on May 2, 1924, in Vienna, to Yiddish-speaking Eastern European parents – was 91. Fled Hitler Thanks to his well-connected Zionist father, six months after the German annexation of Austria in March 1938 ("they were greeted with jubilation by the local populace," he would recall in 2012), the 14-year-old Bikel and his family fled to Palestine, at the time a British protectorate. While there, the teenager began acting on stage,...

Producer Robert Evans, circa 1970s, in the documentary The Kid Stays in the Picture.
Robert Evans: The Kid Is Alright
By
Alex Simon
I interviewed legendary Hollywood producer Robert Evans in 2002 for Venice Magazine, in conjunction with the release of the documentary "The Kid Stays in the Picture," adapted from his iconic autobiography and audiobook. Our chat took place at Woodland, Evans' storied estate in Beverly Hills, in his equally famous screening room, which mysteriously burned down a couple years later. Evans was still physically frail, having recently survived a series of strokes, but his mind, his wit and his charm were sharp as ever, with near total recall for people, places and stories. Many, many stories. Here are a few of them.
It’s a widely-held belief that the years 1967-76 represent the “golden age” of American cinema. Just look at a few of these titles: Rosemary’s Baby,...
