Hideaki Anno is one of the most brilliant voices in animation -- a writer, director, and animator responsible for masterpieces such as the hugely influential "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (and its many endings), but also the anime that did the same twist as Pixar's "Lightyear" much better and decades earlier. Anno additionally belongs to the prestigious club of animators who successfully made the jump to directing live-action projects alongside Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Brad Bird, Tim Burton, and more. Anno not only brought Go Nagai's "Cutie Honey" to live-action successfully, but he also reinvented iconic franchises like "Kamen Rider" and "Godzilla."
The last one is important because Anno's "Shin Godzilla" is part of a new golden age of Godzilla stories. "Shin Godzilla" is a more satirical take on the King of the Monsters and a poignant movie inspired by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, as well as the response...

Photo via Ishikawa Prefecture's official tourism site It's been several weeks since we received any news concerning the state of the Go Nagai Wonderland Museum . Today, we finally have some—and it's surprisingly good. The memorial museum for Go Nagai, the manga artist who created Mazinger Z , Devilman , Cutie Honey and other popular works, opened in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture in 2009. As previously reported , the museum reportedly burned down due to fires caused by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake on January 1. The only other news on the incident so far has been a statement from Go Nagai himself , stating that he assumes the exhibits have been destroyed but will work hard to replace them. Fortunately, it would seem that this is not the case. Sometimes, it takes an outsider’s point of view to reveal the peculiarities of traditional belief systems – especially when it comes to religion. This is likely why so many people are fascinated with Japanese artists that incorporate Western religion into their work. From the apocalypse of Neon Genesis Evangelion to the pacifism behind Trigun, there’s a long history of anime and manga borrowing from Christian imagery and beliefs in order to tell engaging stories.
In fact, one of the most successful examples of this special kind of cultural fusion happened back in 1972 with the release of Go Nagai’s seminal manga series, Devilman. Long before the days of similar hell-themed heroes like Spawn and Hellboy, Nagai cooked up a horror/superhero hybrid that managed to turn a demonic outbreak into a terrifying anti-war parable.

Fatally, perhaps, I went into Shin Kamen Rider as a Hideaki Anno fan first and a Kamen Rider fan… not so much. I knew about it, of course: the iconography of the motorbike-riding superhero with his bug-eyed grasshopper mask is as thoroughly ingrained into Japan’s pop-cultural consciousness as any Marvel or DC character in the States, having been a staple of TV, film, manga, and young boys’ imaginations for over half a century. Consume enough Japanese pop culture, and some exposure to Kamen Rider––his bike, his mask, his kabuki-like battle poses––is inevitable. Having seen barely one of the hundreds of hours of Kamen Rider content out there, however, I could not fill you in on the finer points of its character names, relationships, or plotlines––meaning that when Anno’s latest, allegedly standalone film stopped for regular applause lines and deep-cut lore references that received whooping ovations...

However, the motivation for formulating a piece of fiction goes beyond just making movies and tv shows. Imagination equally thrives in countless ways, such as the various forms of literature. The comic book industry has seen many people inspired by numerous renditions of media, giving way to folks creating their own forms of storytelling through writing and artwork. Beyond that, with the world being so unique and diverse, many comic writers have taken the opportunity to implement aspects that give their stories more layers to them. In the case of the comic series “Primal Warrior Draco Azul,” we have a successful blend of vibrant spectacle with immersive worldbuilding.

As part of the press tour for his new film "Creed III" -- whose fight scenes bring the franchise into anime territory -- Michael B. Jordan listed his five favorite anime series on BBC Radio 1: "'One Piece,'" "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," "Bleach," and "Hunter x Hunter." These are all worthy picks, even though it "would take the average person over 957 hours ... to complete Jordan's top five anime recommendations," as Isaiah Colbert said at Kotaku. "One Piece" has lasted for over a thousand episodes. "Dragon Ball" remains one of the most popular anime ever. "Naruto" featured some of the wildest fight scenes in anime history, while "Bleach" at its best was just cool. "Hunter x Hunter" is messier, spanning two adaptations and a source comic that has yet to finish. But its creator Yoshiharu Togashi has over 3 million followers on Twitter, and his dedicated fans haven't given up on him yet.

Rising Saudi animation studio Manga Productions has announced a strategic partnership with Japanese company Dynamic Planning to license all rights across the Middle East to “Grendizer,” the iconic anime series featuring a super robot with shiny golden helmet horns.
The deal for this IP, which has been massively popular in the Arab world since the 1980s, includes using the anime’s characters “in amusement parks and events in the Middle East,” the two companies said in a joint statement.
Created by Go Nagai, “Grendizer” is part of the “Mazinger” trilogy, which consists of “Mazinger Z,” “Great Mazinger” and “UFO Robot Grendizer.” Grendizer, the titular robot, is the secret weapon used by Crown Prince Duke Fleed to fight off the Vegan invaders on his planet.

In some ways, the first two episodes of "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury" are just what you'd expect from a new series in the "Gundam" franchise. There's a powerful robot called a "Gundam" piloted by a child soldier. Space colonies play politics with the lives of ordinary people. There's an impressive amount of 2D mechanical animation, an increasing rarity in the anime industry outside of studios like Sunrise. Most importantly, the "prologue" episode gives the heroine Suletta Mercury a first-hand demonstration of the horrors of war. The original "Mobile Suit Gundam" distinguished itself from its peers by suggesting that giant robot battles could be fought over ideology distinct from good or evil, and that innocent people could be hurt in the crossfire. "Witch from Mercury" is brighter and poppier than its predecessor, but something of that original cynicism remains.
In other ways, though, "Gundam: The Witch from Mercury" is nothing like I expected.

One can contest that dark fantasy manga is held up to the highest artistic standards within the medium. From its early years with Go Nagai’s “Devil Man” to the iconic “Berserk” from Kentaro Miura, the genre has been defined by ridiculously detailed and stunning visuals. In this regard, It is obvious that artist Gonbe Shinkawa draws heavy influence from those that defined the genre before him, as his panels can be utterly stunning and on par with the best out there. However, dialogue-heavy panels can feature odd facial expressions and the grandiose battle...
