This article contains spoilers for "The Marvels."
Introduced in the 2019 film "Captain Marvel," Goose is a mysterious, voracious alien creature called a Flerken, a being with uncountable tentacles that can snatch full-grown adults from their feet and swallow them whole into its tiny stomach. Goose swallows many victims in "Captain Marvel," and reappears as the good Captain's aloof pet in Nia DaCosta's new film "The Marvels" to swallow even more. The main joke of Goose is that when it's not grabbing its prey, it looks like an average-sized orange tabby housecat. In "The Marvels," Goose is achieved mostly through CGI, but is also played by the real-life cat actors Nemo and Tango.
Later in the film, Goose lays hundreds of Flerken eggs all over a space station. When they hatch, the station is overrun with hungry, hungry kittens who snarf down much of the crew. Don't worry. It's all done to save their lives.

Albert Brooks and Rob Reiner, now both 76, have been best friends since high school, having met in the drama club at Beverly Hills High. (Richard Dreyfuss was also in their class.) Both were what might now be referred to as “nepo babies” in that both of their fathers had successful careers in comedy — Rob as son of the legendary Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Albert the son of Harry Einstein (yes — his real name is Albert Einstein), a radio comedian who found fame as a character called Parkyakarkus. Harry might have gone on to greater heights had he not suffered a fatal heart attack moments after his routine at a roast of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in 1958. Eleven-year-old Albert was listening live on the radio that night.

After being cancelled by Disney+ earlier this year, Nautilus has found a new home at AMC.
The Captain Nemo origin series had already finished shooting, but Disney dropped the series nonetheless as a cost-cutting measure. As stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” Nautilus will air on AMC as well as AMC+ sometime next year.

A retelling of the story of Captain Nemo is on the move — and not just under the ocean.
AMC Networks has grabbed linear and streaming rights to Nautilus — a reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea — in the United States and Canada. The series, which hails from British companies Moonriver TV and All3Media-owned Seven Stories, was initially set for Disney+, which picked it up to series in August 2021. After scrapping the show earlier this year as part of a content write-down, however, Disney Entertainment has licensed Nautilus to AMC and its sibling streamer AMC+, which plan to air the series in 2024.
“Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes,” said Ben Davis, executive vp original programming at AMC Networks and AMC Studios.

The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.
The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.
AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

Nautilus, the ten-part series inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has found a new home.
The series has landed at AMC, where it will air in 2024 as well as on AMC+. The move comes after the Disney+ UK commission was axed by the streamer earlier this summer as part of its content removal plan.

Aporia (Jared Moshé)
What would your life be like if you didn’t go to work the day an accident would otherwise change everything? How much of your future might shift if you decide to simply alter your schedules to better accommodate picking up your child from school? One question seems bigger than the other, yet the second may actually impact what occurs next more. Because you can’t know for certain. And there aren’t any do-overs. Perhaps it’s better that way, to accept and move on rather than risk an even worse fate. Or is it? That’s what writer-director Jared Moshé seeks to contemplate with his grounded science fiction drama Aporia. – Jared M. (full review)

In Anna Boden's and Ryan Fleck's 2019 superhero film "Captain Marvel," the title character (Brie Larson) has a cat she named Goose. Goose, a Garfield-like orange tabby, was named after the character played by Anthony Edwards in the 1986 film "Top Gun." But it would later be revealed that Goose was not a cat at all, but a shape-shifting alien creature called a flerkin, a voracious squid-like alien that can swallow human-sized prey whole before returning to the size of a house cat, presumably digesting its meals very, very quickly. It was Goose that scratched Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) across his eye, leaving him wearing his signature eyepatch.
According to a 2019 piece in Collider, "Captain Marvel" hired four different cat actors to play Goose throughout the film. Their names were Gonzo, Rizzo, Archie, and Reggie. One of them was hired because it has good at being held, one had the most attractive cat face,...

Just two years ago, it seemed like the summer blockbuster might be a thing of the past. After Covid kept cinemas closed across the United States for the majority of 2020, the box office reopened in 2021 on uncertain footing, with many high profile flops and a soft performance for the movies overall. That summer seemed like the harbinger of the end for the seasonal release strategy that “Jaws” perfected all the way back in 1975, wherein the hottest months hosts the biggest titles — marketed aggressively to theatergoers. It seemed like those days were behind us, and the streaming age had finally overtaken the days when movies could be events. So thank goodness for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Things aren’t entirely rosy at cinemas again (and Hollywood writ large is a mess), but things are improving at the box office with those July 21 releases helping to massively goose theatrical business, picking up where...

Inside, directed by Vasilis Katsoupis, features an intriguing performance by Willem Dafoe. Dafoe, one of my favorite actors, is always brilliant even if the film falters, and that’s exactly the case here. Inside has no real plot, and even though I will watch Dafoe doing even the most mundane things, the film pushes the limit. Films like Locke, Buried, and Trapped are some notable examples that have only one actor predominantly driving the show in one location, but Inside feels just a bit too dry to be called engaging. The intent of the film is to get you into the mind of the character played by Willem Dafoe, and it hopes that some deep meaning will emerge through the metaphor of art that humans leave behind after they themselves leave the world. Whether or not it does is purely subjective, but the film left me wanting.
The story is quite simple.

Halle Bailey is ready to make her big screen debut as Ariel in Rob Marshall’s live-action version of “The Little Mermaid.” But before the actress and singer dove under the sea, she first had to discover the perfect mermaid swim.
“The process of working with the [mermaid] tail was an unforgettable one,” Bailey told TheWrap. “I remember before going to London, I actually had this beautiful training session with these amazing synchronized swimmers that would come to my house every Sunday.”
The swimmers, according to Bailey, would take the actress through the steps of learning how to swim like a mermaid. With the help of a model fin, Bailey learned the gracefulness and ease of swimming like a mermaid, eventually cultivating the perfect Ariel swim.
But the process of filming her scenes as Ariel were vastly different than this training period.

When we choose to spend days in our own room or in any posh Airbnb or 5-star hotel, our power of choice is at play. The freedom to choose to go outside whenever we want is what allows us to stay inside for as long as we want. When that power is snatched from us, it becomes a punishment. The reason we use the word “power” to address choice and not “characteristic” is because a choice can sometimes serve as the difference between sanity and insanity, between life and death. This is what happens in the new movie “Inside.”

Willem Dafoe gets down to business and tells himself what Tom Hanks said to himself years ago: I’ll do this one myself. An interpretative tour de force, indeed… you have to take it ever so calmly and with an even greater degree of reflective spirit.

Locked inside with nothing but priceless works of art, he must use all his cunning and invention to survive.
Critics are raving about Dafoe’s performance, despite mixed reception for the film overall. Los Angeles, March 20 (Ians) Hollywood star Willem Dafoe found playing a largely silent role in ‘Inside’ a pleasure.
The 67-year-old actor takes on the role of art thief Nemo, who gets trapped inside a New York penthouse when a heist goes wrong. He insisted that it didn’t seem like a “challenge” having to get across his character’s emotions with his actions and body language rather than dialogue, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I didn’t see it as a problem or a challenge, that was the pleasure. That was the opportunity, to tell you the truth. Just a different way of doing things, not using words so much, not bouncing off other people, bouncing off of places, things, objects,” he told ComingSoon.net.
The movie was shot chronologically and Willem insisted the filmmaking process was an “actor’s dream.”

Roadside Attraction’s Moving On grossed an estimated $798k at about 800 theaters, about status quo this weekend for a specialty sector that’s better but still looking to break out.
The audience for the Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin-toplined comedy was, not surprisingly, 63% female and 82% over 35. Some 64% were 50+. It played best on the coasts. Estimated per theater average for the Paul Weitz film that also features Malcolm McDowell and Richard Roundtree is just over $1k.
Fonda and Tomlin play estranged friends who reunite to seek revenge against the husband of their recently deceased best friend. The film had trailer time before 80 For Brady where the duo played alongside Rita Moreno and Sally Field (and Tom Brady). That wide-release opening Paramount pic, now down to 168 screens in week 7, has grossed $39 million.

Air, water, food, and shelter rank at the top of the basic necessities required for human survival. In Inside, writer/director Vasilis Katsoupis and co-writer Ben Hopkins wield psychological torment to posit that art should also be considered a necessity. For its art that drives a man forward in this single-location thriller that attempts to hinder survival at every turn.
Inside introduces high-end art thief Nemo (Willem Dafoe) smack in the middle of an elaborate operation that sees him slither inside a luxury penthouse in a New York City high rise with ease. He communicates via walkie-talkie to a pair of unseen collaborators, guiding his way through security systems and the apartment’s smart technology in search of the coveted piece of art Nemo’s there to steal. When it’s not where it’s supposed to be, Nemo’s frantic search costs him precious seconds, setting off a series...

Anchored by a strong lead performance from Willem Dafoe, director Vasilis Katsoupis’ Inside proves to be an engaging and engrossing thriller that will keep the viewer mesmerized until the bitter end.
The nuts and bolts of the plot of Inside are that art thief Nemo (Willem Dafoe) finds himself trapped and abandoned in a New York penthouse/smart house after his crew leaves him to fend for himself after their planned robbery goes sideways. Unfortunately for Nemo though, the tenants of the home are on an extended trip leaving no food or other supplies in the house and the computer controlling the house has malfunctioned forcing him to devise a way to escape his smart prison before succumbing to starvation and the inevitable hallucinations he will suffer.

Two icons are back in action this weekend as Roadside Attractions presents the comedy Moving On with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin on close to 800 screens, hoping it will connect with female audiences.
Focus Features also opens Willem Dafoe-starring Inside from Vasilis Katsoupis on 350+ screens.
It’s been relatively quiet on the specialty front. “There’s not that much out there for this audience right now,” said Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions. “I think this is the opportunity that we felt — it’s after the Oscars and before the Sundance movies and summer movies.”

Plot: A high-end art thief finds himself trapped in a luxurious high-rise penthouse. Desperate for escape, he finds that getting out may be an impossible task.
Review: Inside is only the second feature film for director Vasilis Katsoupis. It’s a simple story that could easily be dull and ponderous. Yet, it’s a worthy cinematic journey when you cast Willem Dafoe, who would be on-screen nearly every second of the film. The film presents an interesting concept with a not-so-likable character. Even still, it’s interesting to see an art thief’s desperate attempt to make an impossible escape. And while I appreciate this intriguing feature, it’s one I respect more than I was thoroughly entertained by. Yet I fully admire the work put in and the excellent performance of Mr. Dafoe.
Inside tells the story of high-end art thief Nemo (Dafoe), who is assigned to steal a painting worth millions.

Willem Dafoe defies classification. He appears in blockbusters and arthouse films, in lead roles or as part of an ensemble. What can be counted on is that he’ll add a dash of idiosyncratic malevolence to whatever part he’s playing. Whether he’s playing Christ, Antichrist or somewhere in between, there’s always something slightly off that makes him watchable. In “Inside,” director Vasilis Katsoupis provides him with a showcase part in what is essentially a one-man show that Dafoe carries with aplomb.
Dafoe’s character is an art thief named Nemo. He is first shown breaking into a high-tech Manhattan apartment. He’s connected to someone on the outside via microphone. It’s clear they hacked into the apartment’s security system. The camera slowly reveals the apartment as an expensive and impeccably designed but sterile abode. Its colors are monochromatic in a mostly bluish hue, there’s...

The frozen tundra, a desert island, the depths of a jungle, the middle of the ocean, the ends of the earth — these are the places where you normally set a survivalist thriller. Inside adds one more to that list of adapt-or-perish hot spots: New York real estate. Specifically, the kind of luxurious penthouse apartment favored by the one percent, coveted by most plebeian Gothamites, and considered a bona fide bonanza for an ambitious art thief. It just so happens that one of the latter has, along with a team of fellow criminals,...

The Oscars are over, but new movies in theaters go on with our third weekend in a row featuring a sequel that’s (sort of) part of a larger franchise. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
In 2019, Warner Bros. decided to make a movie based on the C.C. Beck and Bill Parker superhero, once known as “Captain Marvel,” who debuted in 1940, less than two years after Superman. Although the character hadn’t really been featured in much media, other than a ’70s Saturday morning live action show, DC (and former Cco Geoff Johns) had made a concentrated effort to make the character (redubbed “Shazam!”) more prominent in the comics, even as a big screen movie had been in development by New Line for well over a decade.
That movie opened in April 2019 with an impressive $53.5 million in 4,217 theaters, ultimately grossing $140 million in North America and another $223 million overseas.

A love of computers and programming – rather than a specific interest in rat hair and dinosaur skin – helped Sanjay Bakshi get his role at Pixar
Sanjay Bakshi has spent a lot of time with monsters. He knows precisely how their hair moves as they terrorise humans, how their eyeballs swivel when they sight their prey, and how their fangs gnash when they eat.
As technical director for Disney's Monsters University he led a team responsible for visualising a population of suitably monstrous students, and then animating them. "The directors gave us some loose drawings to go by, and we had to build them into characters," he says. "There were hundreds so, to distinguish them, we had to give them each a name – so we used the names of the crew. Each crew member therefore has their own monster."
Once, special effects work involved substituting chocolate syrup for blood and experimenting...

Andrew counts down Doctor Who's 10 best Cyberman stories from across the TV series, audio dramas and comic strips...
Cybermen; Doctor Who's other monster. The one no-one knows quite what to do with, who show glimpses of what they can do, but don't look like dislodging the upper echelon from its perch.
They're Arsenal, basically. What is Nightmare in Silver if not Mehmet Ozil? A big name attached with lots excitement generated, and sure there are some clever ideas, but ultimately it's not what was necessary. I'd apologise to Arsenal fans but what are they going to do? Throw a trophy at me?
Like the Cybermen presumably do between their on-screen appearances, the writers will be heading back to the drawing board to discuss what they've learned. Meanwhile, here's our list of the top ten Cybermen stories across the entirety of Doctor Who.

The dynamic duo behind the box-office smasher Skyfall, co-writer John Logan and director Sam Mendes, are collaborating on a television series.
Deadline reports that the vampire series, which has already been sent out to cable networks, will be written by Logan, while Mendes will produce and, possibly, direct.
Here’s the gist: “It is described as an origin story set in the 1800s London in the vein of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which also was set in 19th century Europe, including London, and featured an assortment of fictional literary characters. The Logan/Mendes project features such characters as Van Helsing and Doctor Frankenstein as they hunt for vampires.”
From that description, it sounds like the new series basically touches upon every popular nerd genre, with the exception of anime. It’s “All-Things Comic-Con: The TV Show.” But, to be fair, this collaboration of Mendes and Logan bodes well for the project.

Hollywood directors seem to be sneaking into our homes in the night time, snatching away our favourite books and destroying them by regurgitating slapdash adaptations on the big screen. Everything from science-fiction favourites to timeless graphic novels have been snapped up by the jaws of some horrible, dollar-eyed monster and squeezed into an hour and a half of such terrible cinema that it would make anyone spit out their popcorn. Not even our most beloved childhood stories are safe anymore. We thought we'd venture through these awful remakes to bring you the worst offenders.

Pixar, the CGI animation production company born out of Lucasfilm's Computer Division and acquired by Disney in 2007, has produced several of the most-enduring animated characters of the past two decades, from Buzz Lightyear to Nemo to Wall-e. In Up, Pixar's latest release, you won't find any animated toys or talking cars, only a curmudgeonly old man and his chubby 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer sidekick (and a few talking dogs, naturally).
With many of Pixar's other films -- Toy Story, Finding Nemo, A Bug's Life, Monsters, Inc. -- the title gives you a clue about what the film is about; not so with Up. When asked to describe the film, even director Pete Doctor had a hard time summing it up:
It's a hard movie to talk about in a way because it's got a lot of elements to it.... That's what we're trying to do all the time, is surprise people.
