This article contains spoilers for "Mean Girls."
Every stage-to-film musical adaptation requires reimagining, rearranging, or removing elements that wouldn't gel well with the camera and the editing room. Retelling "Mean Girls" (every version of which has been penned by Tina Fey) involves the monumental assignment of adapting layers-upon-layers of its sources, starting with Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 nonfiction parent book "Queen Bees and Wannabes," and then moving onto the original 2004 Mark Waters-directed film based on Wiseman's book, the 2018 Casey Nicholaw-directed Broadway stage musical adaptation (which also features music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin), and, finally, the 2024 "Mean Girls" movie musical directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.
Naturally, the "Mean Girls" movie musical had to scrap several songs and gags from the Broadway stage musical to leave space for makeovers. Theatre heads who've experienced the stage version are bound to notice some major exclusions, including those listed below.

Mark Waters’ hit comedy about the savage jungle of high school cliques, Mean Girls, had enough instant-classic dialogue and memorable characters to become a touchstone for the generation either in or fresh out of their teens when it was released in 2004 and those who have discovered it in the years since. With screenwriter Tina Fey continuing to steer the vehicle, the property navigated the transition to Broadway musical in 2018 with plenty of its original charms intact and some even fortified thanks to the expressive magic of characters bursting into songs that reveal their inner lives.
The show was never going to keep Stephen Sondheim awake nights with its workmanlike tunes composed by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond. But Nell Benjamin’s frequently clever lyrics delivered laughs and director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw’s flair for kinetic showmanship made it a high-energy explosion of hormonal insecurity, malice, vulnerability and hard-won life lessons. Some Like It Hot, the well-reviewed musical stage adaptation of the classic 1959 film comedy and winner of four 2023 Tony Awards, will play its final performance at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre on Saturday, December 30, producers have announced.
One of the more highly lauded productions of the 2022-23 season, the musical never quite caught on with audiences, at least not enough to place the show in the fully-fledged hit category. Box office figures for the week ending Sept. 24 indicate that only 61% of seats were filled at the Shubert, with a gross that week of $681,485. The figures suggest a fairly steady decline in audience interest from the show’s most recent high point of $1,143,488, which came in June following the musical’s decent showing at the Tony Awards, where J. Harrison Ghee took the coveted trophy for best lead actor in a musical.
The show also won Tonys for orchestrations, choreography and costume design.

Tony Award winner J. Harrison Ghee will be out of the musical Some Like It Hot for the next six weeks.
The actor, who won a 2023 Tony Award for their portrayal of Jerry/Daphne in the musical, will take a break from the show as they undergo surgery “to address some issues that have arisen,” over a time span that they say could last “at least” six weeks. Ghee, who uses he/they pronouns, announced the news on Instagram, which was confirmed by the production, and encouraged audience members to come see their understudy DeMarius Copes in the interim.
“I’m Ok. I will be Ok. I am so at peace and grateful for this moment of restoration, of healing to come,” Ghee said on Instagram. “And I hope that you will continue to support the incredible cast of Some Like It Hot at the Shubert Theatre and go see the incredible DeMarius Copes,...

Monty Python’s Spamalot is heading back to Broadway this fall. The revival, which follows a sold-out run at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., begins previews Tuesday, October 31, at the St. James Theatre, with an official opening night of November 16.
“I’m thrilled to see Spamalot back on Broadway,” said Eric Idle, who wrote the show’s book and lyrics and co-wrote the music with John Du Prez, in a statement. “More than ever, it seems we need a good laugh and it’s inspiring to see audiences still embracing this, the most happy of shows I have ever worked on. So put the News Cycle on Rinse Cycle and take a couple of hours to relax with the Lady of the Lake, King Arthur and the Knights Who Say Ni because we’re not dead yet!”

NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers left the football field for a night to attend the 2023 Tony Awards — and his appearance at Broadway’s biggest night quickly went viral.
Rodgers and his New York Jets teammate, C.J. Uzomah, were spotted posing on the red carpet at the 76th annual event held at United Palace in New York.
The football star — who was recently transferred to the Jets and has been spotted attending events such as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour — cleaned up nice for the occasion in a metallic brown suit.
Fans couldn’t help but notice the New York Jets quarterback looking hilariously confused in the Tony Awards audience and took to Twitter to share screenshots of the broadcast.
“Aaron Rodgers looks like he just spotted a member of his family at the Tonys,” one Twitter user wrote.

Two performers broke new ground when it comes to gender diversity at the Tony Awards. J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell are the first ever openly nonbinary acting winners at the Tony Awards.
Ghee and Newell already broke barriers with their nominations, as the first openly nonbinary acting nominees. But the Tonys have now gone from zero to two winning nonbinary performers in one season. Ghee won Lead Actor in a Musical for the role of Daphne in “Some Like it Hot,” a character that begins to explore their true gender identity over the course of the musical. Newell won Featured Actor in a Musical for the role of Lulu in “Shucked,” who receives nightly standing ovations for their signature number “Independently Owned.”
This was the first Tony nomination for both performers. Ghee had previously appeared on Broadway in “Kinky Boots” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” Newell previously appeared in “Once on This Island.

Parade director Michael Arden addressed the rise of white supremacy and antisemitism within the U.S. while accepting his win for best direction of a musical at the 2023 Tony Awards on Sunday night.
Taking the stage at the United Palace in New York’s Washington Heights, Arden dedicated his lengthy speech to “the battalion of people who made Parade and who bring it to life so beautifully and terrifyingly every night.” He then pivoted to the larger conversation around the themes of the show, which tells the story of a Jewish man and factory worker in Georgia in the early 20th century who was falsely accused of murdering a teenage girl and later lynched by an antisemitic mob.

2023 Drama League Awards winners: Annaleigh Ashford (‘Sweeney Todd’) takes Distinguished Performance
Winners of the 2023 Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 19, 2023, at an in-person ceremony, hosted by Emmy-winning reporter Frank Dilella at The Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2022-2023 theater season.
“Leopoldstadt” asserted itself as the dominant play of the season, picking up the Best Play prize. Tom Stoppard’s drama has been perched atop Gold Derby’s Tony Awards odds since we launched the prediction center. With Tony favorite “Kimberly Akimbo” out of the running for Best Musical (the Drama League already considered that tuner for its Off-Broadway run), “Some Like it Hot” cruised to a win in that category. It prevailed over four of its fellow Tony nominees: “& Juliet,” “New York, New York,” and “Shucked.”

‘Some Like It Hot’ Director-Choreographer on the Musical’s “Mathematical” and “Risky” Chase Sequence
In Broadway’s Some Like It Hot, based on the 1959 film starring Marilyn Monroe, there’s a chase sequence that sees the musical’s main trio Joe (Christian Borle), Daphne (J. Harrison Ghee) and Gertrude (Adrianna Hicks) dodging and dipping around a hotel to evade a group of angry mobsters, who are themselves being chased by the police.
With this modern spin on the romantic crime comedy, it’s easy to assume director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw drew from the movie’s chase to help him deliver one of Broadway’s most exciting tap sequences. And there was, at one point, a nod to the film sequence featuring mobster Spats Colombo (played by Mark Lotito) hiding under a room service cart. But the choreographer and director says it was among the things nixed as the team nipped and tucked in the quest to achieve the right pacing and length for the number.

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.
“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.
This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

“We’re both rowdy and silly so I think it was pretty clear that you could say whatever you wanted and it would be fine,” says Amber Ruffin of working with writing partner Matthew Lopez on “Some Like it Hot.” “We both have really hard feelings to hurt. So we didn’t really have to do any tiptoeing.” The fast chemistry between the pair allowed them to dive headfirst into writing the book for this new musical, the first time either artist had attempted this type of writing. Though the process was challenging, they had a ball bringing this classic story into a contemporary light. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“You have to have a thick skin,” says Lopez of musical book writing, “you just can’t be precious about anything.” There is an immense amount of material created for a book, but so much of it winds up...

According to our combined predictions as of this writing, the five who are expected to receive Best Actress in a Musical nominations at this year’s Tony Awards are Victoria Clark (“Kimberly Akimbo”), Annaleigh Ashford (“Sweeney Todd”), Micaela Diamond (“Parade”), Sara Bareilles (“Into the Woods”), and Patina Miller (“Into the Woods”). However, there is a contender I think deserves to be in the conversation much more, and that would be Adrianna Hicks (“Some Like It Hot”).

“Our characters are wrestling with very contemporary situations,” explains Scott Wittman of the musical “Some Like it Hot.” He and Marc Shaiman are the Tony-winning songwriting duo behind the score. The pair was adamant that their tunes be used to expand and reinvent the characters for this stage adaptation, rather than simply copy what viewers would expect from the classic movie. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
When it comes to the overall musical style of the show, Shaiman exclaims ”I just took an MGM view of it all.” He explains that the classic MGM films from the 1920s, 30s and 40s all contain a similar sound full of big band and strings. ”I just wanted to make use of all the great sounds of really, almost 3 decades worth of swing and elegant, romantic, joyous music,” describes the composer. “We just knew we wanted it to feel contemporary,” explains Casey Nicholaw of his new musical “Some Like it Hot.” Although the show is adapted from the classic film of the same name, there are bold new choices made on stage which help today’s audiences relate to the material. Nicholaw directs and choreographs the big, brassy, song-and-dance fest now playing at the Shubert Theatre. ”I think it’s a modern take on a classic film,” says Nicholaw. Watch the exclusive video interview.
One of the main tasks with this adaptation was to reinvent the core characters. As Daphne (played by J. Harrison Ghee) begins to live as a woman to hide their true identity, the character realizes that they feel more like themself as a woman. Nicholaw describes the desire to create a “slow burn” for Daphne’s journey of self discovery, so that the audience can “see it...

The story is adapted from Lindsay-Abaire’s straight play of the same name, which centers on the teenage Kimberly (Tony winner Victoria Clark) who has a rare disease that causes her body to age rapidly. I'll let you in on a weird secret: when I was a kid, one of the prettiest songs I'd ever heard didn't come from a classical recording or a popular radio ballad, but from an Austin Powers movie. Specifically, it was Mike Myers' first turn as the Bond-parodying spy in "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" that left me teary, with a surprisingly sweet scene that saw Austin romancing his gal, Vanessa (Elizabeth Hurley), while Burt Bacharach crooned in the background. Bacharach's presence in the Austin Powers films, first playing piano and singing "What the World Needs Now," and later accompanying Elvis Costello in a rendition of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," was an inexplicable sort of movie magic. The late composer and pianist didn't fit into the otherwise farcical comedy, but he also elevated it into something classic.

This January, Mean Girls’ national tour opened in Los Angeles, bringing the cult classic teen comedy to life on the Pantages stage.
At the show’s L.A. premiere, the audience was decked out in pink outfits and Mean Girls merch, while guests like producer and Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels also attended. Based on the original film screenplay and book from Emmy award winner Tina Fey, Mean Girls follows the same story of new kid in town Cady Heron, as she navigates the vicious world of high school suburbia — a place led by the ruthless plastics and their queen bee Regina George.
Ahead of the show’s final weekend at the Pantages, The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the musical’s composer Jeff Richmond, along with current cast members, to discuss the upcoming movie musical adaptation, Richmond’s working relationship with his wife Fey and how the show...

On a rainy Sunday afternoon, “Some Like It Hot” opened on Broadway and furnished the Shubert Theater with its most glittering audience in recent memory.
Patti LuPone, Bette Midler, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Short, Andrea Mitchell, Debra Messing, Uma Thurman, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Sedaris and many more all filed through Shubert Alley to attend the exciting new stage adaptation of the classic 1959 film comedy.
Starring Christian Borle, J. Harrison Ghee, Natasha Yvette Williams and Adrianna Hicks in Marilyn Monroe’s fabled role, “Some Like It Hot” comes to Broadway as an entirely new musical, not a revival. In a time where intricate, justice-laden plays have the upper hand — and the musical genre struggles to find its footing between the social-theatrical project and camp — “Some Like It Hot” opened on Sunday with an answer for success: The new adaptation reinterprets MGM’s original concept...

Next to the jukebox musical, the Broadway genre getting and usually deserving the least amount of respect is that woebegon Frankenstein that starts life on the big screen only to have its parts jumbled and reassembled for the stage. The failure-to-success ratio of such attempts should keep any sane stage director as far from a movie house as humanly possible.
We’re all fortunate that Casey Nicholaw has ignored any such warnings, and has instead assembled a glorious new Some Like It Hot, a tap-dancing, razzle-dazzling embrace of everything to love about classic American musical theater, Golden Age Hollywood and Broadway talent at the top of their games, all of it crafted with a 21st Century wisdom that knows what’s worth clutching from the past and what insists on a refresh. The Book of Mormon, the Tony-winning musical comedy by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez, will resume Broadway performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Friday, Nov. 5, producer Anne Garefino announced today. But there might well be some changes.
The show’s writers will begin rehearsals with the cast in the Fall, having agreed to discuss and possibly adjust elements of the show deemed racially problematic. Several months ago, twenty actors from the original and most recent Broadway casts signed their names to a letter asking the writers and producers to reevaluate aspects of the show.
The irreverent show’s depiction of Africans has been a much-discussed topic in theater circles since matters of Broadway’s entrenched racism took on renewed scrutiny following last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests. In a People TV interview last July, original cast member Josh Gad, asked about a potential film adaptation of the musical,...

Other productions planned for the Ahmanson’s upcoming season are Hadestown, The Lehman Trilogy, and The Prom, among others.

Mean Girls won’t be back when Broadway reopens, producers announced today. The musical based on Tina Fey’s 2004 film suspended production when Broadway went dark due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The musical, with a book by Fey, music by Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Nell Benjamin and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw, opened on Broadway in 2018 and grossed $124 million by the time it close in March. Plans to adapt it for a new Paramount Pictures film version were announced previously.
“We remain excited to bring this musical to the big screen, relaunch the tour and prepare for a London production,” said Lorne Michaels, who produced the musical with Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman, and Paramount Pictures. “I look forward to the day, hopefully soon, when theaters can open their doors again.”
The producers said the permanent closing was due to the ongoing Broadway shutdown. The show had recouped its capitalization...
