Phoenix is one of the most distinguished and extensively expanded works by the legendary mangaka and father of anime, Osamu Tezuka, alongside his notable creations like Astro Boy and Princess Knight. Created in the 1950s, it is notable for its complex subjects as well as its vast breadth. Rather than telling a single plot, Phoenix tells a series of self-contained stories set throughout history, from the Stone Age to the far future.
The title ‘Phoenix,’ the mythological firebird supposed to provide perpetual life, connects all of the stories. While the stories vary in genre and tone, they all address similar themes such as immortality, rebirth, reincarnation, and what it means to be human.

Hybrid is probably the word to best suit Michael Arias’ “Tekkonkinkreet”. Based on Taito Matsumoto’s manga “Black & White”, it is the story of Yin and Yang brothers Kuro (“Black”) and Shiro (“White”) as they battle to save their home from adults, greedy bad guys and inner demons.
Tekkonkinkreet is screening at Japan Society
Treasure Town is an island in the middle of the city – a lawless neighborhood that nobody runs, but everybody claims. Children run the streets, to the annoyance of the yakuza; while the police holds little real power. But this is the chaotic order in place. That is until Hebi and his evil empire want to raze Treasure Town to the ground and build an amusement park in the name of profit. This evil force unites the inhabitants against this outsider as they gradually realize the plans in place, and it’s up to out two young heroes to fight back.

In crafting Mfkz, his first feature film, Guillaume ‘Run’ Renard adapted his first comic book for the screen, realizing how challenging feature directing is, and how difficult it can be to translate the essence of a work from one medium to another. Violent, timely and delightfully dark, the adult-oriented animated film follows Angelino, one of an endless number of deadbeats living in the dystopian Dark Meat City. Following a scooter accident, the character’s life is transformed into a nightmare, making him question whether an alien invasion is happening, or he is simply losing his mind.
Co-directing the film with Shôjirô Nishimi, Renard looked to condense a 600-page story arc into a streamlined cinematic experience, that would nonetheless retain the essence of his original vision. “The difference between comics and a movie is that in comics, the reader has control over his reading pace. So as an author, it is...

There’s an incredibly cool looking R-rated animated film coming out called Mfkz and today we have a red-band trailer to share with you for it along with a couple of other trailers.
This movie completely came out of nowhere and it’s described as a "dark but stunningly animated sci-fi vision that mixes anime, film noir, and Lucha Libre in an orgy of video game-inspired mayhem." As you’ll see, it looks crazy cool!
The film was produced in France and made by Shôjirô Nishimi and Guillaume Renard, and it’s based on Renard's comic book series. The title of the film is an abbreviation of the actual French title which is Mutafukaz, but you can't promote a movie in the U.S. with that kind of title.
The film centers on young Angelino and his skull-and-flame pal Vinz, who live in a seedy tenement in an La-inspired dystopian metropolis – a burnt-out,...

"There's no way you two can run forever." GKids has debuted a gnarly red band trailer for an animated movie from France titled Mfkz, made by Shôjirô Nishimi & Guillaume Renard, based on Renard's comic book series. The title is an abbreviation because the actual French title is Mutafukaz, but you can't put that out in the Us. The film is described as a "dark but stunningly animated sci-fi vision that mixes anime, film noir, and Lucha Libre in an orgy of video game-inspired mayhem." The feature is a collaboration between French comic artist Guillaume "Run" Renard and the "ultra-hip" Japanese animation house Studio 4°C, of Tekkonkinkreet, Genius Party, and Mind Game. The new English release features the voices of Michael Chiklis, Giancarlo Esposito, Jorge Gutierrez, Dascha Polanco, RZA, Vince Staples, and Danny Trejo. This actually looks crazy cool, something different. And good to see another R-rated animated movie. Here's the...

Aiming to make an impact this Oscar season, the inaugural Animation Is Film Festival from GKids, the Annecy International Animation Festival, Variety, and Acifa-Hollywood launches October 20-22 at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theater.
The festival will present a selection of new animated feature films from Asia, Europe, South America, and North America, with juried and audience prizes and filmmakers attending most screenings. Additionally, the festival will feature studio events, special screenings, short film programs, and a Vr lounge.
Aif seems well timed: The Academy now allows all members to vote for animated features, using preferential voting. However, it remains to be seen what the dynamic will be in terms of mainstream versus indie nominees.
GKids, which has nine Oscar nominations (including this year’s “My Life as a Zucchini”), has seven movies in contention this season; four showcase in competition at Aif. The highlight is “The Breadwinner” (October 20), a coproduction of Ireland,...

Our readers in France (or anyone familiar) will hopefully be able to enlighten the rest of us on what is said to be a popular French comic book, because it's becoming a movie. Titled "Mutafukaz," I'm told that the French comic book is being developed into an animated feature-length film by French publishing powerhouse Ankama, to be directed by Run (aka Guillaume Renard, the comic book creator) & Shojiro Nishimi, with Shinji Kimura serving as artistic director, and is set to be released in french theaters in 2017. An official description of the work calls it “a 2D urban sci-fi spoof,” set in a “pre-apocalyptic American urban jungle” that's called......

Here’s the opening for another game from the neverending .hack series, .hack//net for the Playstation Portable. Normally this wouldn’t be really newsworthy, but this has been animated by the brilliant minds (or hands) at Studio 4°C and if you watch closely you may recognize the unique style of Shojiro Nishimi who did the character design for the amazon Tekkonkinkreet.
