The opening scenes of any film, especially an action blockbuster, are instrumental in establishing the tone and the pace audiences can expect from your movie. When you're crafting a new entry in a long cinematic legacy of James Bond movies, there's an even greater expectation to work against: nailing the franchise tradition of the cold open. Today is the 10th anniversary of the most beloved Bond outing of the Daniel Craig era, "Skyfall," and director Sam Mendes knew he wanted to accomplish everything he could with his ambitious entry into the 007 franchise.
Most Bond films usually begin with a cold-open unrelated to the central conflict of the film, mostly acting as a one-shot of sorts — establishing a new director's voice with the character before getting into the main course. In "Skyfall," Mendes delivers all the spectacle required of him: a gorgeous silhouetted opening shot courtesy of Roger Deakins, a motorcycle chase through Istanbul,...

It's the 10th anniversary of the best post-2000 Bond movie. Sam Mendes' 2012 spy film "Skyfall" is the twenty-third in the long-running series of James Bond movies, an atmospheric masterwork that features Daniel Craig's third performance as the fictional MI6 agent.
"Skyfall" sees Bond re-entering into MI6 service after his assumed shooting death and taking on a mission which sends him to the brave new world of Shanghai in pursuit of a mercenary known as Patrice (Ola Rapace), the man for whom the bullet that wounded Bond was intended for. Bond is tasked by his MI6 superior M (Judi Dench) to find Patrice, the sensitive hard drive he holds, and information about his mysterious employer. The ensuing confrontation is gorgeously lit and impeccably shot under the supreme lens of cinematographer Roger Deakins; the two men fight in silhouette, backlit by LED panels of bright, glowing jellyfish, and few words are...

Stockholm-born actress-writer-director Pernilla August will direct the six episodes of a brand-new crime-drama series entitled Blackwater, commissioned by Sweden’s pubcaster Svt. August debuted as a director in 2005, with the short Time Bomb, which was followed by her successful first feature as a writer-director, Beyond (2010), a movie that starred Noomi and Ola Rapace in the lead roles and represented Sweden at the 2012 Academy Awards. Amrita Acharia is impressive as a Norwegian-Pakistani caught between different worlds
This atmospheric, delicately etched Nordic drama stars Amrita Acharia as a second-generation Norwegian-Pakistani woman caught between several contiguous but different worlds. Divorced from her nice but dull architect husband, with whom she shares custody of their young son (Prince Singh), she finds it hard enough being a single mother while trying to launch an acting career. To make things tougher, her conservative family, led by the passive-aggressive mother from hell (Rabia Noreen), never stop guilt-tripping her about shaming the family. Sexual sparks fly when she meets a Swedish film director (Ola Rapace), but he is too self-absorbed to handle the demands of dating a woman with a child. Though sometimes it seems like European arthouse cinema churns out films on this or similar themes by the metric ton, Acharia’s electric performance is impressive, while director Iram Haq brings...

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

The MTV Movie Awards nominees in the Best Fight category cover a wide range of fisticuffs, from the shootout in "Django Unchained" to the train-hopping brawl in "Skyfall." All five nominees are worthy of praise, and all are deserving entrants into the category.
But two entries in the category managed to up the ante for fight scenes in two very different ways. This being Splash Page, of course we're talking about Batman vs. Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" and the Avengers vs. Loki and the Chitauri in "Marvel's the Avengers." The former fight was up-close and personal as two physical powerhouses clashed, leaving one of them utterly broken. The latter was quite possibly the most epic all-out war ever captured in a superhero film.
If you need a reminder of just how intense both of these throw downs were, check out the videos below. Don't forget...

Now that the Academy Awards are but a distant past, it's time for the crazy, silly MTV Movie Awards! I love the categories such as Best Kiss, Best Shirtless Performance, and Best Wtf Moment. But it's also about the craft with Oscar nominees such as "Django Unchained" and "Silver Linings Playbook" duking it out with fan (and critics) faves "Ted," "The Avengers," and "The Dark Knight Rises" for the Movie of the Year award.
The MTV Movie Awards is really about and for the fans so they can vote for the winners which will be announced April 14. The funny Rebel Wilson will host the festivities where Will Ferrell will receive the Comedic Genius Award! Yes, genius!

Remember when Twilight was the king of the MTV Movie Awards? The monster film franchise adapted from the Stephenie Meyer novels have won a total of 16 buckets of golden popcorn, making it one of the most successful franchises in Movie Awards history, which is a sentence that make the MTV Movie Awards sound far more important than they actually are, but I digress.
Fact of the matter is, the Breaking Dawn installations of Twilight have been the weakest popcorn nod earners for the franchise: possibly because MTV wants other flicks to get a chance at the awards, or maybe because they've decided that Twilight is a horrible thing after all (and it's way too late to decide that). Breaking Dawn Part 2, the very last film of the saga, only garnered a single nomination in new category Best Shirtless Performance for the film's resident jailbait hunk, Taylor Lautner.
So it won't...

The nominees for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards have been revealed, setting up what looks to be another rollicking ceremony celebrating the Cinema of Cool (via golden statues of popcorn — or Golden Popcorns, if you want to be all official-like).
MTV's own Josh Horowitz joined "Pitch Perfect" star Rebel Wilson to announce the nominees, with Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" and Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" coming forth as the major contenders with seven nominations each. Does this mean that the slave turned bounty hunter should team up with the foul-mouthed, hard-drinking teddy bear in some future cinematic adventure? Hey, we'd see it. Twice.
Meanwhile, "Silver Linings Playbook" follows close behind with six nominations, while Christian Bale's final (Or Is It?) gig as the Caped Crusader, "The Dark Knight Rises," scored five. Both Django Unchained and Ted scored big with seven nominations apiece; Silver Linings Playbook also did well, garnering six total nominations. Last year, the release of Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond film, pushed the boundaries of what audiences expected from Daniel Craig’s 007 outings, progressing from the super serious, and a little bloated, Quantum of Solace, to bring a more classic feel Bond, yet one that did not feel out of place in the slightest with Craig’s Bond. A large amount of the praise garnered by Skyfall has been aimed, rightfully, at Sam Mendes, the visionary director behind such classic films as American Beauty and Road to Perdition, who brought his own brand of storytelling to the Bond franchise as well as orchestrating a number of massive stunts that have even seen Skyfall win the award for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture, at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Shanghai assassination scene cut and subtitled dialogue modified to bring film into line with state sensibilities
Record-breaking Bond film Skyfall is due for release in China on Monday, but reports are surfacing that scenes have been censored and altered to make it acceptable to the Chinese authorities.
The main casualty of the culling is a scene that occurs during the Shanghai-set sequence, in which French hitman Patrice (played by Ola Rapace) shoots a security guard after entering a skyscraper. The scene has apparently been cut in its entirety. In addition, the Chinese subtitles have changed the meaning of dialogue between Bond and bar hostess Sévérine (Bérénice Marlohe) in a Macau casino, removing a reference to her becoming a prostitute at a young age.
Re-editing of imported films is not uncommon in China, where scenes deemed offensive were removed from the likes of Men in Black 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

Hong Kong -- James Bond might have escaped from China unscathed in his latest adventure, but the same can’t be said of Skyfall itself -- as shots of a Chinese character being killed and dialogue referring to prostitution and politics were either edited out or left obscured in subtitles. The missing scene was set in Shanghai, when a French hitman (played by Ola Rapace) is shown shooting a Chinese security guard in the elevator lobby of a skyscraper before preparing for an assassination. Time and time again the legendary James Bond film franchise has learned to adapt and survive. Survival of the fittest, if you will. Whether the reasons for concern were changes in the actor playing the part, the loss of a producer, turbulent waters for the studio’s finances, changes in screenwriters or the lack of anymore Ian Fleming material upon which new adventures can be penned, the series has always quickly learned to get back on its feet to thrill and amuse audiences the world over. Even within the films themselves, the plots have almost always reflected new geo-political paradigms, as well as cultural morays and trends in pop culture. James Bond is always recognizable,...
