The 70th annual Golden Reel Awards were handed out on Sunday night, honoring the best achievements in sound editing across film, television, video games and student work.
The top three film awards were handed to “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Banshees Of Inisherin” and “Elvis” which won for feature effects/foley, feature dialogue/Adr and feature music respectively. All three films are also nominated for the top prize, best picture at the 95th Academy Awards which will be handed out on March 12.
Other winners included “Moonage Daydream,” “Good Night Oppy” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”

Motion Picture Sound Editors spread the wealth at the 70th Golden Reel Awards, its first in-person ceremony since the start of the pandemic, held in a new venue, L.A.’s Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

Each episode of “Love, Death + Robots” presents its own set of unique challenges for sound supervisor Brad North and his Emmy nominated episode, “In Vaulted Halls Entombed,” is no exception. It was the middle part that brought some of the bigger challenges for him. “You have the bigger creatures, so we had to come up with a little bit more, plus we were doing a lot of guns too. We had to find our spots of playing the size of the bigger guys but also hearing the textures of them and also hearing the guns,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The Oscar-frontrunner “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) each won sound editing feature awards Sunday night at the 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (held virtually). “Dune” took feature effects/foley, “Nightmare Alley,” a non-Oscar nominee and surprise winner over “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” snagged feature dialogue/Adr, and Oscar nominee “West Side Story” collected feature music. The other Oscar sound nominees are “Belfast” (Focus Features), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix).

Fox Post Production Services and Formosa Group – the sound house that has worked on projects such as “Dune,” “Cruella,” “Scream” and “Mare of Easttown” – have entered a strategic alliance designed to broaden Fox creative talent available to producers, enhance the studio’s sound facilities and expand business for both companies.
The pact will give Formosa Group a presence in the original Film Editorial building on the Fox lot in Century City, where Fox Post Production Services already boasts four feature mixing stages, two Adr stages, the famous Newman Scoring Stage, a Foley stage and several editing rooms. The unit was established in the 1930s as Fox Sound.
Formosa Group launched in 2013 with the goal of becoming a go-to home for creative sound talent. It has since expanded to include numerous facilities in the U.S, Canada and the U.K., offering services for features, broadcast, streaming and interactive clients.

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).

“Deep Dive” is a in-depth podcast and video essay series with the stars, creators and crafts team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with HBO to take a closer look at the limited series “Watchmen,” and interviewed creator Damon Lindelof, and 10 members of his creative team to go behind the scenes of Episode 6, “This Extraordinary Being.”
“What is Hooded Justice’s origin story?” It was the question showrunner Damon Lindelof asked his “Watchmen” writers room early on in their reinvention of Alan Moore’s groundbreaking graphic novel. The answer to this question would become the basis of Episode 6 of “Watchmen,” “This Extraordinary Being,” one of the most formally bold 60 minutes of television ever made.
“For an episode like this to work,” Lindelof told IndieWire, “you need so many brilliant minds coming together and at any one time different people are taking the reins and steering the carriage.

As expected, the Creative Arts Emmy competition Sunday turned out to be a sci-fi smackdown between Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and HBO’s “Westworld,” and each split the night with five awards apiece.
The Duffer Brothers’ ’80s homage to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, “Stranger Things” won for outstanding editing, main title theme music, main title design, sound editing, and casting. The Jonathan Nolan/ Lisa Joy sci-fi/western, “Westworld,” earned outstanding special visual effects (the domain of “Game of Thrones” five years running), makeup (non-prosthetic), hairstyling, sound mixing, and creative achievement in interactive media.
However, if recent history proves a reliable harbinger, “Stranger Things” has the edge in the race for next Sunday’s Outstanding Series competition because of its editing victory. That’s because the last five outstanding editing winners have also taken home the big prize.
