Exclusive: Universal Pictures and Working Title have an updated feature version of The Borrowers in development, based on the Mary Norton book series of the same name. Sausage Party and The Addams Family filmmaker Conrad Vernon is in talks to helm off a screenplay by Patrick Burleigh.
The Borrowers is an action adventure that follows a family of tiny people who live secretly in the walls and floors of an English house and “borrow” from the big people in order to survive. Working Title and Polygram, which was later absorbed by Universal in 1998, originally released a live-action feature adaptation in 1997 starring John Goodman and Jim Broadbent, and directed by Peter Hewitt. The pic grossed close to $23 million at the domestic box office. Similar to the first movie, the new version will be a live-action take, I hear.

We revisit Tom's Midnight Garden, Moondial, The Chronicles Of Narnia and a few lesser-known UK children's TV series...
Read our look-back at UK kids' fantasy dramas 1980 - 1984 here.
By 1985 British TV's children's drama had really hit its stride, achieving "a balanced diet of programmes" as Edward Barnes, the head of the BBC children's department observed. The late 80s, arguably, saw a new golden age for spooky and magical kids drama. Excellent production values, improved significantly by well-honed special effects work using Quantel, Paintbox and Harry, and moreover some interesting casting - often of very talented newcomers - produced some of the most memorable dramas of the era.
The second half of the decade saw the BBC riding high on the back of the success of their state-of-the-art adaptation of John Masefield's Box Of Delights. Meanwhile, anthology series Dramarama was going from strength to strength on ITV.

From Flushed Away and Hunchback to Titan A.E. and Sky High - the family movies that don't get the love they deserve...
When I sit through a film such as Zootropolis, Rango, Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, Eddie The Eagle or Coraline, I can’t help but be thankful somebody has bothered. As a parent as well as a movie lover, I’ve grown to really dislike family movies that just turn up to act as a surrogate babysitter for 90 minutes, with no intention of becoming anybody’s favourite film. The films I'm going to talk about are the family movies therefore that I think both try and do something a bit more, yet continue to fly under many people's radar.
A bonus mention before we get going, and number 26 in the list, much to my surprise: Alvin & The Chipmunks 4. I was expecting next to zero from it, courtesy...

A slew of classic Disney movies are hitting for the first time on Blu-Ray, including one double-pack release, and you’re going to want to make sure to pick these up. You haven’t paid attention to some of these titles for a while, and it’s about time you got the chance to catch them on Blu-Ray. The best part is that there’s a great mix of releases hitting. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is all but lost in the cultural consciousness, and it deserves a return. The Academy Award-winning movie from the year I was born is filled with a lot of fun and adventure, and like most Disney films, holds up well for a whole new generation.
The rest of the group covers a great spectrum, including two animated “big” titles, and a 10th Anniversary release. There’s a lot to expose your family to here, so check out all the info below,...

When Hayao Miyazaki retired last year at the age of 73, animation lost one of its most accomplished and dedicated practitioners. His work, comprising 11 features and numerous shorts, needs little introduction: films such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle have long since etched themselves on the minds of audiences all over the world.
Miyazaki's final film, The Wind Rises, was a bravely individual parting shot. A drama about the designer of the legendary Japanese fighter plane, the Mitsubishi Zero, it felt like a final, heartfelt statement from a truly great artist - and a fitting capstone to a remarkable career. But with Miyazaki having set aside the painstaking work he put into animating his films over the course of some 48 years, the inevitable question...

House of the Long Shadows (1983)
Directed by Pete Walker
Written by Michael Armstrong, Earl Derr Biggers (novel), George M. Cohan (play)
Cast: Desi Arnaz Jr. (Kenneth Magee), Vincent Price (Lionel Grisbane), Peter Cushing (Sebastian Grisbane), John Carradine (Lord Elijah Grisbane), Christopher Lee (Corrigan), Sheila Keith (Victoria Grisbane), Julie Peasgood (Mary Norton), Richard Todd (Sam Allyson), Louise English (Diane Caulder), Richard Hunter (Andrew Caulder)
I like to think of “House of the Long Shadows” as kind of the super group of horror films. What I mean is that typically that term is reserved for the music field for example, Damn Yankees, Asia, Velvet Revolver, Audioslave. Hopefully, you get the point. It’s professionals who have already made their own fame and fortune alone or with another group, but band together for a second helping of notoriety. I don’t know if anyone in this film...

Willem (age 10) and Miranda (age 9) put a capstone on their extended marathon of Studio Ghibli viewing. After taking both the heaviest Studio Ghibli film, Grave of the Fireflies, and the lightest entry, The Cat Returns, they end the 15 film marathon with The Secret World Of Arrietty. The 2010 film is one of the studio's most recent films, directed by Yonebayashi Hiromasa, vividly adapted by Miyazaki Hayao from Mary Norton's series of novels, The Borrowers. The kids talk about the eponymous heroine's relationship with her parents, the proximity of the 'tiny' family to the human 'beens' who live above them, as well as the all encompassing natural world which threatens to engulf them. Lastly, they marvel at the small-scale physics realized by the animation house...

Disney and Studio Ghibli banded together again to bring The Secret World of Arrietty to U.S. audiences a few months back. This animated masterpiece was critically acclaimed and captured the hearts of audiences internationally when it came out in theaters. Those who didn't see it get another chance now that it's released on Blu-ray and DVD.
In this adaptation of Mary Norton's beloved 1952 book The Borrowers, a family of four-inch tall people named the Clocks secretly live in the house of regular sized humans. Their abode is put together of simple items they borrow from the family. One day, their daughter Arrietty (Bridgit Mendler) is found and everything in their little world changes.
One of the greatest things about this movie is experiencing our big world through the eyes of four-inch people. The visually superb animation sparks the imagination of the viewer. However, younger children might find themselves...

Studio Ghibli continues its amazing success, this time with Hayao Miyazaki giving up the directing spot. The force behind too many brilliantly crafted animated films to mention, Miyazaki is only listed here as producing the screenplay, with longtime animator (going back to Princess Mononoke) Hiromasa Yonebayashi taking the reins.
The Secret World of Arrietty, based on The Borrowers, takes us into the tiny world of young Arrietty and her parents, Pod and Homily. The Clock family (though I don’t know that they are referred to as such in this version of the story) have their simple lives thrown into chaos when Arrietty is spotted by a young boy.
Shawn comes to visit the house the Clocks occupy in order to get as much rest as he can. The sickly youth is meant to be conserving his strength before an operation, but he soon learns that he has come to...

Well we're back again with the bumper crop of must-have DVDs and Blu-rays for the month of May – from historic Italian epics to underground American sensations to a chilly, expressionistic film noir to movies where Raquel Welch plays a Vegas showgirl fleeing a murderer – we’ve got them all hear for you. So look on below to see what's worth your money this month....
"1900" (1976) Blu-ray
Why You Should Care: At the time of its release, Bernardo Bertolucci's historical epic was said to be the most expensive (requiring the financial commitment of three major studios – 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and United Artists) and ambitious ever mounted in Italy. It's a tale of two friends (played by Robert De Niro and Gerard Depardieu), born on the same day at the dawn of the 20th century, and the way that their lives crisscross, intersect, and diverge wildly over the rocky course of history.

Actor and children's television writer known for Catweazle, Robin of Sherwood and The Borrowers
Richard Carpenter, who has died of a blood clot aged 82, brought intelligent, imaginative entertainment to generations of young television viewers through the fantasy series he created. After almost two decades as an actor, he found his first success as a writer with Catweazle (1970-71), starring Geoffrey Bayldon as a dishevelled, eccentric, 11th-century magician transported to the 20th century. Comic misunderstandings were mixed with slapstick as Catweazle befriended a farmer's son, Carrot (played by Robin Davies), who unravelled for him modern-day mysteries such as "electrickery" and the "telling-bone".
In the second series, Carpenter had Catweazle searching for symbols of the 13 signs of the Magic Zodiac and being taken in by another boy, Cedric (Gary Warren), at his parents' country estate. "I've always been interested in the person who is outside society," said Carpenter in a 1990 interview with the magazine Time Screen.

The most astonishing thing about The Secret World of Arrietty is that it took so long for someone to try an animated adaptation of Mary Norton’s beloved award-winning book. Rightwing Us commentator criticises Hollywood for 'once again trying to indoctrinate our children'
Conservative filmgoers beware: Hollywood is after your children (again) with the release of two new films that shamelessly deliver a pro-liberal message.
The Secret World of Arrietty, Studio Ghibli's animated take on The Borrowers, is an insidious polemic that encourages class envy and redistribution of wealth. Meanwhile, Dr Seuss' The Lorax is yet another example of environmental radicalism, according to Lou Dobbs of the Fox Business Network.

This past weekend the latest film from Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli, The Secret World of Arrietty hit theaters to the tune of $6.4 million from 1,522 theaters. A solid start and the largest opening domestically for a Ghibli film yet, both in theater counts and certainly in terms of opening weekend take. The film has also already brought in $126 million internationally, which seems to imply the international success of the Ghibli films may finally be seeping into domestic consciousness. I've never quite understood why The Ghibli films, and Miyazki's in particular, haven't done better here in the U.S. All the parents I know constantly complain about the lack of quality children's film these days so you'd think they would be dragging the kids to see Miyazaki's visually arresting fantasies featuring uplifting themes and strong female protagonists. Films such as the Oscar winning Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl's Moving Castle.

It’s been exactly 15 years to the day since The Borrowers last graced American screens in the form of Peter Hewitt’s delightful action comedy, also adapted from Mary Norton’s novels. Where The Borrowers focused on the adventure, The Secret World of Arrietty is more in line with Hayao Miyazaki’s weird and wonderful Ponyo, also dealing with an impossible crush. With a crush one often does what they can to protect both oneself and the person or object one has a crush on, even in secrecy.

Los Angeles — The President's Day weekend box office was too close to call as the action tale "Safe House" and the love story "The Vow" competed for the No. 1 spot.
Based on Sunday's studio estimates, Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds' "Safe House" had a slim lead with $24 million from Friday to Sunday. That put it a fraction ahead of Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum's "The Vow" with $23.6 million.
The winner won't be known for certain until Tuesday, when studios will report final numbers for the long holiday weekend. Final numbers often vary from weekend projections, which include estimates for the size of Sunday's audiences.
No matter which one finishes on top, the movie business remains unusually brisk for winter, typically a slow season at theaters. The business uptick comes after Hollywood lumbered through a humdrum holiday season at the end of last year, when audiences were apathetic about most new releases.

There’s no doubt that animated films wowed us in recent months. Films like The Adventures of Tintin and Rango were impressive in every way and to compare The Secret World of Arrietty is simply unfair because it’s the antithesis to those other films; yes, it’s animated too but where many animated films make sure that no stone goes unturned, giving us everything we could dream of, Arrietty still leaves plenty to the imagination. It’s the type of story that makes you ask what or who is living under your home. It makes you look at your light sockets differently or maybe that crack in your kitchen baseboard. And maybe, it makes you look at yourself in the mirror a little differently too.
Our story introduces us to the Clock family, four-inch tall species of humans called Borrowers who live underneath the floorboards. The protagonist is a...

I saw The Secret World of Arrietty last year, in the U.K., where the title was the simpler Arrietty and the voice cast was British and Irish (Mark Strong, Saoirse Ronan). I was not overly thrilled with it. It’s entirely possible that the U.S. version, with a U.S. voice cast (Will Arnett, Bridgit Mendler) -- which I have not seen -- would make me feel differently, but it’s hard to see how. While perfectly pleasant and an entirely suitable option for anyone looking to take small children to the movies, it is a disappointingly minor entry in the annals of Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio. A flat take on Mary Norton’s novel The Borrowers [Amazon U.S.] [Amazon Canada] [Amazon U.K.], about tiny humans who live secretly in symbiosis with normal-sized people, it pales next to Ghibli masterpieces such as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro... partly because it...

After the often in-your-face flash of CGI, many may find it a pleasure to experience again the elegant, old-school charms of hand-drawn animation, so from Japan’s Studio Ghibli and their award-winning master animator Hayao Miyazaki comes The Secret World Of Arrietty, a chirpy new adaptation of Mary Norton’s children’s classic The Borrowers. Arrietty (voiced by Bridgit Mendler), a tiny, but spunky 14-year-old, lives with her parents (Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) in the bowels of a suburban garden home, unbeknownst to the homeowner and her housekeeper (Carol Burnett). Like all little people, Arrietty remains hidden from view under the floorboards and only emerges when the coast is clear to do their “borrowing” of supplies from their human hosts. When 12-year-old Shawn (David Henrie), a human boy with a heart condition who’s staying in the home, discovers his mysterious housemate one evening, a secret friendship blossoms. If discovered,...

Arriving early in the year, Japan's "The Secret World of Arrietty" may go on to stand tall as one of the best films of the year. Graceful and elegant, unafraid to take its time but never boring, this adaptation of Mary Norton children's story "The Borrowers" - a tale of an ultra-tiny family that secretly lives in the walls of an ordinary home - is of quality on par with what we've come to expect from its home, the legendary Studio Ghibli. And although the lauded Hayao Miyazaki did not direct this animated film, he did write the screenplay, which is chock full of his familiar themes. The directing honor, this time, goes to Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who worked previously as an animator on many...

We’ve come to expect so much from Japan’s Studio Ghibli—especially the films directed by Hayao Miyazaki like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle— that a film that’s merely pleasant, like The Secret World of Arrietty, comes as something of a disappointment. That may not be fair, but it’s understandable. Miyazaki collaborated on the screenplay for this adaptation of Mary Norton’s much-loved book The Borrowers, and is also credited with “planning,” but director credit goes to Hiromasa Yonebayashi. The story is slight but charming, presented in a laid-back fashion that immediately distinguishes it from American...

If you’re a fan of Anime classics like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle or Princess Mononoke, then you will definitely want to check out The Secret World of Arrietty. The animated film from Disney, features the voices of Bridgit Mendler, Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, Will Arnett, David Henrie, and Moises Arias.
The premise of the story (little people who live beneath the floorboards) reminds me of the 80s cartoon The Littl’ Bits mixed with a touch of An American Tail.
Speaking of Fievel Mousekewitz, in this latest clip from The Secret World of Arrietty, one of the little people is yanked up from her world by her tail – except she doesn’t have a tail since she’s not a mouse. You’ll see what I mean.

Chicago – Hayao Miyazaki is a living legend and his company Studio Ghibli should be as revered as Disney. They have given moviegoers around the world so many incredible gifts such as “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” and “Princess Mononoke.” When Mr. Miyazaki only produces or writes instead of directing, such as with the new “The Secret World of Arrietty,” the results are less magical than otherwise but there’s still a lot to like in this gentle, sweet family film. It’s nowhere near manic enough for any wee ones with a case of the Add (or just general toddler attention spans), but “The Secret World of Arrietty” will connect with the right audience, those who have been enraptured by Studio Ghibli before.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Miyazaki wrote and produced “The Secret World of Arrietty” and his fingerprints are all over it, particularly in the scenes of the beauty and diversity of the natural world.

Review of The Secret World of Arrietty. The classic children's tales "The Borrowers" come to life in Studio Ghibli's animated adventure The Secret World of Arrietty. For his latest animated adventure, Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki and his team at Tokyo-based Studio Ghibli look back to British writer Mary Norton's 1952 book "The Borrowers" and all her stories about the tiny people who live under the floorboards of unsuspecting humans and make use of discarded items like a pin or a button. The Secret World of Arrietty marks something of a changing point for Studio Ghibli; established in 1985 by Miyazaki and fellow animator Isao Takahata, and the creator of numerous classics including the Oscar-winning Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Castle In The Sky and Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind. The charmingly simple conceit behind Mary Norton's children's fantasy novel series, "The Borrowers," is that there are a race of tiny people, no bigger than a stack of quarters or a human thumb, that live underneath your floorboards, sneaking into your home at night to "borrow" things essential to their survival. While this doesn't explain the mystery of the missing sock, it does give a nifty explanation to misplaced household items, told with a twinkly kind of magic that's easy to believe in, especially at a time in your life when you too are smaller than most people. The books have been adapted a number of times, including a fairly high profile 1997 theatrical film starring John Goodman, but "The Secret World of Arrietty," the wry and spirited new animated version from the wizards at Studio Ghibli (distributed in America by Disney with a translation overseen by Pixar), is the most breathlessly told,...
