Another week, another traumatic episode of a Shonda Rhimes show that centers around a vulnerable group.
On Station 19 Season 7 Episode 3, the firehouse fam attends a Pride parade to celebrate Seattle's LGBTQ+ community. For a full recap and review, check out TV Fanatic Jasmine Blu's expert take on True Colors!
During the Pride parade, a car backfires, the sound is mistaken for a gunshot, and chaos erupts. As painful as it is, this is an entirely predictable series of events because Shondaland loves to give marginalized communities a tragedy to rally around.
Don't get us wrong. We love this universe. Everything Shonda Rhimes touches turns to gold.
But we'd be remiss if we ignored the fact that sometimes it's hard to stomach some of the painful storylines vulnerable communities have to endure in the worlds she builds.
Looking back on the history of Shonda's television empire, it's clear that this isn't a new phenomenon.

Last Week’S Podcast: ‘Doubt’ Producers on Their Show’s Transgender Breakthrough – IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
Dan Bucatinsky has one of the more interesting careers in television – an actor, writer, producer who can’t be pigeonholed into one category. James is dead. Jake murdered him, gunned him down in the street, and left David alive to throb with the guilt of surviving. One of the reasons this death hits so hard is that it means losing this fantastic actor from our regular roster. Dan Bucatinsky was able to treat what should have been a secondary character with all the charm and benevolence James Novak required to counter Cyrus’s deeply evil persona. I rooted for James even when I wasn’t rooting for Cyrus, knowing that he deserved better but hoping he would find a way back to the love and family he really wanted with Cyrus. When Olivia and Rowan had their heart-to-heart and she asked him if it was worth putting on the white hat and doing the work of saving all the monsters in the world, I was hearing James. He got tripped up and got...

Jake shot James in last week’s Scandal cliffhanger, leaving David alive and in the clutches of B-613 in “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.”

The episode began where we left off last week, with Jake (Scott Foley) walking up to James (Dan Bucatinsky) and David (Joshua Malina), gun in hand. David stood stunned while James ran for his life, getting a bullet in the back for his troubles. With James down, Jake turns to David and asks, “Are you smart, David?” The answer is yes, and David now has to help Jake and B-613 cover up the murder.
The next morning, while David arrives on the scene Jake orchestrated to look like a car jacking gone wrong, Cyrus (Jeff Perry) is sitting catatonic in his office with Liv (Kerry Washington) by his side. She swears to him that she will find whoever is responsible for James’ death and...

Plus, the grossest scene in ‘Scandal’ history comes courtesy of a very unlikely character.
After last week’s mom-revealing, Mellie-violating, Quinn-enlisting episode of Scandal, you’d think the Nov. 21 hour might take a breather, focusing on some lighter crises in the life of Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington). Then you’d remember we’re talking about freaking Scandal. This week’s episode cranked ‘it’ up to 11, bringing more life-shattering secrets to light, and setting the stage for a mother-daughter reunion of Shonda proportions.
‘Scandal’: 6 Biggest, Craziest Moments
1. Maya eats her damn wrist. I’m not even exaggerating, I almost had to stop eating while Mama Pope ripped the flesh off her wrist with her teeth to ensure a longer captivity. (I say “almost” because I would never actually stop.) But seriously, we barely know anything about this woman yet, other than she’s alive and she’s not afraid to eat her own self.

A new study on Lgbt actors confirmed what many performers already knew: Being out impacts your career. “In a perfect world, as an actor, you are a complete chameleon and a complete mystery,” said Dan Bucatinsky, an actor and consulting producer on “Grey’s Anatomy.” But in the SAG-aftra study, conducted by UCLA’s Williams Institute through online surveys of 5,692 union members last fall, more than half (53 percent) of the Lgbt respondents said they believe that directors and producers are biased against Lgbt performers in hiring. And 45 percent of lesbian and gay respondents said they believe that producers and studio executives think they’re less marketable than straight performers. “Anyone knowing anything about you personally, your politics, your sexual orientation, religion in life, is going to impact an audience’s ability to imagine you as somebody else,” said Bucatinsky, who won a 2013 Emmy for his guest performance as James Novak on ABC’s “Scandal.

Scandal is Kudrow’s largest television acting commitment in years and—with its Shonda Rhimesian soliloquies on good and evil, torture scenes, oval office love affairs, trembling lips, and power skirts—a change in tone for the comedic actress. Though her fans should probably just imagine Kudrow’s politician as a ...

Now this could be fun: Shonda Rhimes has recruited Lisa Kudrow (Friends) to join the ranks of Scandal this fall.
EW confirmed that Kudrow, who currently stars in the Showtime cult comedy Web Therapy, will recur on the drama when it returns to ABC on Oct. 3.
Deadline, which first reported the news, says that Kudrow will play a politician. She’ll also join an old friend on the show: Kudrow owns a production company with the Emmy-nominated Dan Bucatinsky, who plays Cyrus’ husband James Novak. The two of them executive produce Web Therapy, as well as the TLC show Who Do You Think You Are?...

This story first appeared in The Hollywood Reporter's August Emmy stand-alone issue. Dan Bucatinsky James Novak, Scandal (ABC) When we haven't seen each other for a few episodes, we talk a lot about the last time James and Cyrus [Jeff Perry] saw each other. We talk to the writers and fill in the blanks that have gone on offscreen; we try to play it as a real relationship and talk through the holes. Even if you're not seeing everything, that main character [Cyrus] comes home every night to see his husband and baby. Jeff and I talk about what

"Scandal" Season 3 is still, painfully, a few months away, but members of the cast were on hand at the recent Atx Television Festival in Austin, Texas to reminisce about Season 2, talk Twitter and share their hopes for next year.
One of the many shocking twists of Season 3 was the revelation that Joe Morton's enigmatic B613 director, Rowan, was also Olivia Pope's (Kerry Washington) father. The cast members on hand at the Atx panel -- Katie Lowes (Quinn Perkins), Joshua Malina (David Rosen), Dan Bucatinsky (James Novak) -- admitted that they were every bit as floored as the audience when they finally found out. "Joe Morton had been around for months and we had no idea," Lowes said with a laugh. "No one knew. Everyone was completely flabbergasted. I think there was screaming that occurred."
"There's screaming at every table read," director Tom Verica, who was also at the panel,...

[Spoiler Alert: If you care about spoilers, don't read if you're not caught up with Scandal. We're going as far as last week's "A Woman Scorned." Deal? Deal.]
It’s been almost three months since we saw David Rosen wake up next to a butchered blonde and we realized that something (else) was amiss in the Scandalverse. These kids can’t catch a break, can they? Since that moment and the President’s sabotaged hostage rescue attempt, the pieces of the White House Mole problem have been unravelling slowly, with promising leads, frustrating closed doors, and the death of an innocent man.
Scandal isn’t concerned with answering every question, but at least we know for sure that in tonight’s episode of ABC’s soapy, impossible-to-resist melodrama,...

'Scandal' star, author and Huff Post blogger Dan Bucatinsky recently stopped by Huff Post Live to discuss what it's like to be a real-life gay father.
Bucatinksy, who plays James Novak on the hit ABC show, revealed his biggest challenge didn't really have much to do with his sexuality.
"The things that I was not prepared to handle were things that other new parents are not prepared to handle," said Bucatinsky, who penned the book Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?. "I was surprised by how normal [it was... because gay people are normal], but how much it wasn't specific necessarily to the fact that I'm gay."

Most know Dan Bucatinsky as James Novak on the extremely addicting ABC hit Scandal, but if you really knew everything else he does during his "free-time" you would realize he's just as busy as Olivia Pope. Starting off as just an actor in L.A., Bucatinsky soon became a writer, author, and a producer after meeting a certain friend. During a recent interview with him, Bucatinsky opened up about his hectic (but exciting) schedule and working with his business partner Lisa Kudrow.

"I've always sort of been a hyphenating kind of guy. Even in college I couldn't pick my major and I wanted to combine three or four or five different majors and I did that," he starts off. "I came out to L.A. to be an actor and writing became a means to an end to me.

The characters on ABC's Scandal are constantly juggling multiple life or death decisions and putting out raging fires without ever breaking a sweat. That work ethic is not lost on Dan Bucatinsky, who plays the reporter turned stay-at-home dad James Novak.
In addition to working on Scandal, Bucatinsky is a consulting producer on Grey's Anatomy, an executive producer of Web Therapy (he also co-stars) and Who Do You Think You Are, a newly published author and an equally new dad.
Needless to say, his time is just as precious as Olivia Pope's and Bucatinsky recently carved some out to chat with ETonline about tonight's shocking Scandal and what it was like to stage network TV's first all-male nude screaming matching.
ETonline: Twitter lit up last week during James and Cyrus' naked argument. What went through your mind as you read that script for the first time?

Dan Bucatinsky is a very busy man. The actor, writer and producer is currently playing a recurring role in ABC's Shonda Rhimes drama "Scandal" as James Novak, a former political journalist whose return to work has caused some serious, potentially administration-shaking conflicts for his husband Cyrus (Jeff Perry), the White House Chief of Staff. Off screen, Bucatinsky serves as a consulting producer on Rhimes' other current TV series "Grey's Anatomy" and, along with his spouse Don Roos ("The Opposite of Sex"), works on and sometimes appears in his producing partner Lisa Kudrow's web series-turned-Showtime comedy "Web Therapy." Bucatinsky's also written a book about his experiences becoming a father with Roos, the memoir "Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight?" Indiewire caught up with Bucatinsky on the phone between table reads to talk about "Scandal," the changing...

Nothing like a game changer thrown into an already fast-paced and shock-filled season Scandal has been giving fans. The tangled twists of the vote rigging and President Fitz' shooting is nothing compared to what's next for Olivia Pope and all those in the White House. Dan Bucatinsky recently revealed about the "explosive" moments that are yet to come, and why he enjoys playing James Novak. And even more so, why working with Shonda Rimes is like nothing he's ever been a part of before.
In tonight's "Nobody Likes Babies" episode, get ready for all to be revealed. What's next for James and Cyrus? Are we really going to see a change in most characters? Let's put it this way, if the cast was on the edge of their seats during this table read, then you certainly will be too.
Scandal is just massive at this point. It has a fantastic cast and loyal fans.
