Annette Bening is a five-time Oscar nominee, having recently garnered a bid for her leading turn in Netflix’s biographical drama “Nyad.” Bening is clearly having a great year as she also features in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” which could bring her back to the Emmys for the first time since 2006.
The limited series, adapted from the novel of “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, depicts four adult children trying to piece together the mystery behind the disappearance of their mother, played by Bening. Sam Neil, Jake Lacy, and Allison Brie all turn in fabulous supporting performances but this is Bening’s show, with the veteran actress performing at the peak of her powers.
Bening always has a commanding screen presence and, in truth, she could play most roles in her sleep, such as is the might of her talent. With “Apples Never Fall,” she is afforded...

Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.
Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.
Two other Oscar contenders — “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” — were ruled out of the running by the guild before nominations were announced way back on Feb. 21. The WGA included “Barbie” in the original lineup while the academy had it over in adapted. That was the third time in a decade that...

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

It’s been a remarkable past year for Free Solo directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. At Telluride, they premiered their first narrative feature Nyad, a dramatization of the relentless pursuit of extreme athlete Diana Nyad to swim from Cuba to Florida without the safety of a shark cage. The Netflix release has gone on to earn Oscar nominations for its stars Annette Bening and Jodie Foster.
But the filmmaking couple hasn’t left the world of nonfiction cinema behind. They return to documentary storytelling this month with Photographer, a National Geographic series about the elite artists who take some of the world’s most remarkable images of wildlife and the human family. In the end the delayed release date for “Poor Things” (Searchlight) due to the actors strike boosted the movie into the holiday box office derby. Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Frankenstein’s monster film wowed audiences and critics at the fall festivals and has grossed more than $104 million worldwide. Oscar winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) won the Comedy Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards and the BAFTA (where she wasn’t up against Lily Gladstone) and could take home another gold statue. If Oscar voters want to award someone, it doesn’t matter if they’ve won before.

Until this year, Annette Bening’s Oscars resume exclusively consisted of nominations for playing fictional characters, but that changed when her fact-based performance in “Nyad” earned her a spot in the current Best Actress lineup. Her new role as long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad is also unique in that, in terms of physical time on screen, it is the largest of the five for which she has achieved academy recognition and brings her total amount of Oscar-nominated screen time from under three hours to over four.
Since only 108 performances longer than Bening’s in “Nyad” have ever been put in the running for Best Actress, it falls within the category’s 77th screen time percentile. This bid boosts her nominated screen time average (based on four lead turns and a single supporting one) by over seven minutes to 51 minutes and seven seconds, while her new running time percentage mean of 45.65% is...

Here in the final stages of the 2024 Oscar season, several Academy Awards voters told Gold Derby who they voted for – and why. They asked us not to reveal their identities, but they were otherwise eager to share their views of the year’s best films and performers. Now that voting has concluded, we’ll share a few with you. The comments below by Voter #3 are part of the thought process in choosing these potential winners.

Best Picture: “Oppenheimer”
I loved “Oppenheimer” for its scope and ambition. I don’t think there’s been a greater depiction of genius on film since ‘Amadeus.’ ‘Oppenheimer’ is about how those who don’t understand genius seek to destroy it. Nolan has forever changed the way to approach biographical storytelling by doing what quantum physics can do and rework our relationship with time,...

Women in film in 2023 were getting younger. When it came to all female characters that had speaking roles in last year’s top grossing movies, fewer than half were from women over the age of 40.
The latest report from Dr. Martha Lauzen’s famous Celluloid Ceiling study — this year called “It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World” — found that on the whole, female characters were significantly younger than their male counterparts.
According to the study, which looks at the top 100 grossing movies released at the domestic box office in the year, 33 percent of female characters were in their 30s, but that number dropped precipitously to 15 percent for those in their 40s. Only 7 percent of female characters were over 60. For men, that decline didn’t happen until they got to age 50. The percentage of male characters in their 30s was the same as male characters in their 40s, at 28 percent, but...

It could be fifth time lucky for Annette Bening as she heads to this year’s Oscars with yet another nomination – this time for Best Actress for her role in Nyad.
Bening has on four previous occasions left the ceremony empty-handed, but she remembers fondly her first Oscars in 1991, when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Grifters.
The actress told The Times of London that all the women in her category – Whoopi Goldberg, Diane Ladd, Mary McDonnell and Lorraine Bracco – got together prior to the presentation and cut a deal.
Bening recounted:
“We got together in a little huddle and we said, ‘All right, let’s all have dinner next week and whoever wins pays.’ And so Whoopi Goldberg won [for Ghost] and she sent us each a flower arrangement and a card that said, ‘Meet at such and such a restaurant next week at a certain time.

Annette Bening still likes to swim, despite the brutal eight hours a day she spent in the water for her Netflix film Nyad. Bening stars as Diana Nyad, who, at 64, became the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Bening trained for a year to perfect her stroke, and got to know Nyad herself, with Jodie Foster alongside her, starring as Nyad’s real-life friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll. “I swim all the time, it’s become part of my staying sane,” Bening says now, adding that she learned from Nyad that pushing oneself beyond what you thought you could do is “a way to know yourself, and that’s a way to expand your own idea about yourself in the world, and also increase your joy, and increase your appreciation.” Here, Bening looks back over some favorite moments in her career, from The Grifters,...

(The following conversation does not reveal my wife’s final SAG Awards picks, only what she was considering. Her ultimate ballot remains confidential.)
My wife Jill is an actress and a voting member of the Screen Actors Guild, giving me – an editor at Gold Derby – a unique perspective on the process of choosing winners for this Saturday’s SAG Awards. And by “unique,” of course I mean surreal. Witness our Wednesday night discussion of what she was leaning toward in filling out her ballot.
“Ok honey, let’s start off by looking at who you’re considering for lead actor,” I begin.
“Well, I can tell you that Bradley Cooper was too showy and too mannered in ‘Maestro’,” she believes, “There was too much style going on. Cillian Murphy was pretty darn good (in “Oppenheimer”), but I didn’t like the character.”
“What didn’t you like about him?” I ask.

Annette Bening and her “Nyad” co-star Jodie Foster share similar tastes – Bening Foster over with a dog and Christmas decorations. And they once were wore similar gowns to the Oscars.
Considering they are two of the greatest actresses working today, one might assume Bening and Foster were friends – or knew each other – prior to working together on the Netflix film. The two are both Oscar nominated for portraying swimmer Diana Nyad (Bening) and her best friend/coach Bonnie Stoll (Foster.) In a Q&a at the Aero Theatre for the American Cinematheque, the pair revealed they had only met in passing and Bening was a bit intimidated when she heard Foster was being offered the part of Stoll. You can view the Q&a below.
Said Bening, “I thought, “Oh, she’ll never do it. Because she’s selective, and she’s got class, and she doesn’t know me.

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).
“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.
Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

As was the case last year, only six of the current 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay achieved similar recognition from the Writers Guild of America. Three of the four films that were excluded from the WGA rosters revealed on February 21 – “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” – had been deemed ineligible in January, while “Maestro” simply failed to garner enough support from the guild.
Although it’s competing for the adapted screenplay Oscar, “Barbie” is included in the WGA’s original lineup. This marks the third such instance in 10 years, following the cases of “Whiplash” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2017), the latter of which won the favor of both organizations. The remaining original WGA contenders are “Air” and Oscar hopefuls “The Holdovers,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.”

The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.
In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.
As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.
Despite now taking place one month after the Academy Awards, the WGA nominations still carry weight this season — and could be a deciding factor for final Oscar voting. As IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted,...

Maestro, Saltburn and Barbie were the big film winners at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, which were handed out tonight at The Beverly Hilton. See the full list of winners below.
Netflix’s Maestro and Amazon MGM Studios’ Saltburn were dual winners, with Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein pic taking Best Period and/or Character Make-up and Special Make-up Effects, and Emerald Fennell darkly comic thriller winning Best Contemporary Make-up and Contemporary Hair Styling.
Warner Bros’ Great Gerwig-helmed megahit Barbie took the Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling.
Since the modern Muahs Awards began in 2014, one of its marquee film winners for makeup or hair has gone on to claim the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar every year — except in 2022. The Academy Award went to The Eyes of Tammy Faye, which was up for three of the guild’s awards but went home empty-handed.

Embarking on the pursuit of goals is a timeless and universal endeavor that transcends age limitations. While some may argue that age hinders the realization of dreams, it is crucial to dispel this misconception and recognize that age should not impede our aspirations. Nyad is a sports drama that illustrates the steadfast resoluteness of a resilient woman in her sixties, determined to resurrect a previous, thwarted aspiration—the continuous swim from Cuba to Florida. Directed by the dynamic documentary filmmaking duo, Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, renowned for their Academy and BAFTA-winning documentary Free Solo (2018), which chronicles Alex Honnold’s daring free solo climb in 2017 on El Capitan, a towering 3,000-foot-high rock formation in Yosemite Valley, California. In their debut feature film, they draw significant inspiration from their protagonist’s almost irrationally optimistic outlook and relentless drive. The narrative unfolds as a poignant exploration of the protagonist’s obstinate...

Acclaimed actress-filmmaker Jodie Foster finds it is “cool” that there’s been 47 years between her first Oscar nomination for ‘Taxi Driver’ and her most recent for ‘Nyad’. The 61-year-old actress was recently shortlisted for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role accolade for her work on ‘Nyad’, an biographical sports drama film about swimmer Diana Nyad’s multiple attempts in the early 2010s to swim the Straits of Florida, with flashbacks to her early life.
Jodie, whose first nomination was for ‘Taxi Driver’ in 1976, told The Rake: “Oh, really. That’s cool, I like that statistic. Look, I worked in the sixties, the seventies, the eighties, the nineties, the noughts, the tens and the twenties… That’s amazing, all those different eras.”

“I think that the six or seven months I spent with Sofia at this time in my life — as a mother, as a wife, having felt like wanting to quit and give up — she pushed me into knowing you have everything that you need inside of you to continue this next chapter and leg in life.” This epiphany by “The Color Purple” star Danielle Brooks about the character she portrayed is just one of many powerful yet similar revelations that connect a handful of female Oscar nominees and their respective performances in movies ranging from “Nyad” to “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “The Holdovers.” For them, stories of female self-realization that began on-screen transformed them off-screen.

As Spinal Tap’s David St Hubbins famously noted, there is a fine line between stupid and clever. Likewise, one might say, there is a fine line between hero and villain. Diana Nyad – author, radio host, squash player and, most famously, long distance swimmer – encompasses aspects of each of these things in Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi’s take on the most remarkable swim of her life. The film does not concern itself with the way that aspects of that swim have been called into question, nor with Nyad’s established tendency to exaggerate, but focuses instead on her experience of forcing her way through life whilst demanding much more from it than others do, and on others’ experience of the attraction and sometime unpleasantness of being close to such a person.
The closest person of all to her is Bonnie Stoll, her lifelong best friend and latterly her coach.

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their first round of predictions, and they say the race is Da’Vine Joy Randolph‘s to lose for “The Holdovers.” The other four Oscar nominees are Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”) and Jodie Foster (“Nyad”).

In terms of how many biographical performances they each include, the 2023 and 2024 acting Oscar lineups are staggeringly different. Whereas only two portrayals of real people (Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in “Elvis” and Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde”) were recognized last year, a whopping 10 are presently nominated, constituting the highest such rate (50%) in five years. What’s more, this is only the third time in almost a century of Oscars history that real-life characters aren’t outnumbered by fictional ones.
This year’s near-record biographical performance rate ranks only behind the 60% ones of 2016 and 2019. Unsurprisingly, three of the four eventual winners in both previous cases belonged to those majorities. This includes leads Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, and Olivia Colman as Queen Anne as well as supporting players Mark Rylance as Rudolf Abel, Alicia Vikander as Gerda Wegener, and Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley.

Exclusive: Annette Bening, who just received her fifth Oscar nomination last week for her portrayal of champion swimmer Diana Nyad in Nyad, has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Arlington Award.
The Arlington represents the first new award the festival has created in more than two decades and is named for the historic venue where all the fest’s annual tributes timed to Oscar season take place. It will be presented on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the theater, preceded by an in-person conversation I will be moderating covering her entire career.
“This is the first award added to our slate in 20 years. It is made to honor an artist who is greatly admired and who has demonstrated an incomparable commitment to film and its craft. Ms. Bening has not only displayed all of those qualities, but is considered by us to be a friend of the film festival.

“Barbie” is officially on her way to the Oscars. Ironically, Barbie herself isn’t invited.
Despite hitting all of the major precursors, Margot Robbie was robbed of a Best Actress Oscar nomination on Tuesday morning for playing the title character. She did, however, receive a nomination in Best Picture as a producer on “Barbie.”
Here are five reasons that explain her acting snub.
1. Actors just didn’t perceive the role to be that much of a challenge.
There’s no question that Robbie played Barbie perfectly. (Can you even imagine any other actress filling those pink heels?) It’s just that only actors nominate actors. And actors probably felt that the role wasn’t that much of a stretch for the marvelous Margot, whom they previously put up for Best Actress for 2017’s “I, Tonya” and Best Supporting Actress for 2019’s “Bombshell.” The part of Barbie just wasn’t written to blow anyone away.

Annette Bening, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the most talented and admired actresses of her generation. Vanity Fair has called her “a leading lady from the old school,” who “epitomizes the wit and glamour of modern Hollywood.” The Los Angeles Times has said she “brings to mind such Golden Age actresses as Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert and Barbara Stanwyck — sassy, ready-for-anything heroines a half-step ahead of their man.”
Over the course of some 35 years in the business, Bening has given standout performances in films like 1990’s The Grifters, 1991’s Bugsy, 1995’s The American President, 1999’s American Beauty, 2004’s Being Julia, 2010’s The Kids Are All Right, 2016’s 20th Century Women and 2017’s Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool. The Academy Awards still have the ability to shock even the savviest of prognosticators. While Gold Derby’s combined odds were letter-perfect in Best Picture and Best Actor, there were other categories where we blundered. Here are five contenders we should not have banked on to earn nominations.
One of our biggest blunders — predicting “Barbie’s” Greta Gerwig for director — was not actually a bad guess. The filmmaker has three past Oscar bids for “Lady Bird” and “Little Women,” after all, and was at the helm of the biggest sensation at the box office, as it outpaced the nominations leader “Oppenheimer” by earning over $1 billion. She also had that key nomination at the Directors Guild of America and some other precursors. However, Gerwig has missed directing at the Oscars before for “Little Women,” and she was snubbed in the directing category at the BAFTAs for “Barbie.” The notorious gender bias...

Have you ever left something unfinished? At the age of 60, Diana Nyad felt that she had — 32 years prior, she’d begun an attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida, a 110-mile marathon. Due to strong winds, Nyad was forced to abandon her attempt. That wasn’t the end of the story, however; in 2010, Nyad began to train for the swim once more. The epic story of that swim is told in the new film Nyad, starring four-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening as Diana Nyad and Oscar winner Jodie Foster as her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll. You can watch a conversation between the actors and the real people they portray above.

Like clockwork, every January brings a cavalcade of Oscar nominee snubs and surprises, but Academy voting trends typically don't stop there. Sometimes predictable, usually disappointing, and -- every so often -- downright confounding, there's always one nomination wrinkle that everyone's favorite awards show throws into the mix. Let's call it, "Movie that most normies have never even heard of." We use "normie" affectionately, of course, referring to general audiences with nine-to-five jobs who don't spend every waking moment on the internet.
So after today's high-profile Oscars announcement, what stands out as the 2024 version of this annual and bizarrely fascinating event?
Folks, allow me to introduce you to a little movie called "Nyad," a biopic directed by the husband-and-wife directing duo of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin ("Free Solo") and based on the memoir written by long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad. The film had an unexpectedly strong showing in terms of nominations,...

Updated with full list, more details: The nominations for the 96th Oscars unveiled Tuesday has focused the race around a real Best Picture competition between Universal’s Oppenheimer (13 nominations), Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon (10 noms), Searchlight’s Poor Things (11 noms) and Warner Bros’ Barbie (eight noms).
That means an impressive 21 nominations for Barbenheimer, the one-two summer punch that had a collective gross of almost $2.4 billion at the global box office, and did as much to restore moviegoing as Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick did the previous year as the business struggled to rebound from the pandemic. Oppenheimer and Barbie got to fully promote their films right before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that hindered many of the other films that bowed in the fall because guild members were forbidden from stumping for their films.

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”
Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”
She got particularly close to Oscar gold with “American Beauty” in 2000. Annette bagged the BAFTA and SAG award for her iconic portrayal of the colourfully volatile wife-in-crisis, Carolyn Burnham. She lost to Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) though, who had edged her out at the Globes.

Robert De Niro also won best supporting actor for his role in Martin Scorsese’s true-crime epic, which tells the story of the systemic assassinations of the Osage people in 1920s Oklahoma by white settlers who planned to steal the tribe’s wealth in the form of oil-rich land rights.
Netflix’s Nyad also won two awards: best actress for Annette Bening, who plays competitive swimmer Diana Nyad as she attempts to cross shark-infested waters between Cuba and Florida, and best supporting actress Jodie Foster, who plays Nyad’s coach and best friend Bonnie Stoll.
Rustin’s Colman Domingo also scored the prize for best actor for playing civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the Netflix biopic.

Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) is being underestimated this awards season. The two-time Oscar and Golden Globes champ for “Silence of the Lambs” and “The Accused” has had renaissance, of late. She opted to take on less acting work through the 2010s as she switched her focus to directing. She reaped an Emmy bid for helming an episode of “Orange Is The New Black” and directed installments of “House of Cards” and “Black Mirror.” Two years ago, she delivered a powerhouse performance in “The Mauritanian” and won another Golden Globe for her portrayal of Nancy Hollander.
She is back in contention at the Globes tonight for her work in the Netflix biopic “Nyad.” As the stalwart Bonnie Stoll, she is the heart of the picture, which chronicles the attempts by Diana Nyad to swim from Cuba to Key West. Annette Bening portrays the marathon swimmer while Foster is her best friend and coach.

Glenn Close delivered a killer Golden Globes acceptance speech in 2019 when she pulled off an upset in Best Drama Actress by winning for “The Wife.” Lady Gaga was the frontrunner for her performance in “A Star is Born” but it was Close who took to the stage.
We could be in for a similar situation this year as Annette Bening looks to claim a career win of her own. The frontrunner for Best Drama Actress is Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Also nominated are Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), and Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”). Bening’s path to a Golden Globe victory isn’t just merited by her veteran status, however. She also has the backing of the critics.
Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair) opined: “Nyad is played by Annette Bening, who trained for a year to ready herself for the physical demands of the role.
