Exclusive: Elaine McMillion Sheldon, the filmmaker known thus far for her Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning work in the documentary space, is making her first move into narrative as the director of a film on Marry Harris Jones — the hallowed labor figure known to history as Mother Jones.
Jerry Bowles and David O’Malley penned the script for the project, with Lisa Saltzman set to produce.
An Irish-born American working at various points as a dressmaker and schoolteacher, Jones pivoted her focus to union and community organizing and activism after experiencing two major, personal tragedies: the death of her husband and four children from yellow fever in 1867 Memphis, and the destruction of her dress shop in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The impassioned figure would come to be known as “the most dangerous woman in America” while working to secure rights for mine workers and ban child labor.

Before we roll into August, we have one last round of July home media releases to look forward to, even if this week is one of the lightest weeks I’ve seen all year, with only three horror titles making their way home on Tuesday. Scream Factory is giving Piranha II: The Spawning a Blu-ray release, Vinegar Syndrome has resurrected The House of the Dead on Blu-ray, and Warner Archive has given Village of the Damned (1960) an HD overhaul as well.
The House of the Dead
Four tales of intrigue and horror await anyone brave enough to enter the House Of The Dead... When a philandering husband accidentally finds himself lost during a rainstorm, he's taken in by an elderly mortician and is forced to learn the ghastly origins of four freshly arrived corpses: a scornful teacher whose students teach her a fatal lesson, an amateur filmmaker with a deadly muse,...

For horror fans, 1981 was a banner year. First, we were inundated with over a dozen slasher flicks, including genre classics such as Halloween II, The Burning, The Prowler, My Bloody Valentine and Friday the 13th Part 2. The year also included future classics like The Howling, The Evil Dead, An American Werewolf in London and The Beyond, so it's no surprise a little monster movie called The Boogens became lost in all the cinematic mayhem. But the film developed a following and is now out on DVD for the first time.
The Boogens opens by recounting the tale of a silver mine that closed 100 years ago after a devastating tunnel collapse. The sole survivor said the miners who survived the cave-in were attacked by something living in the tunnels, though...

A busy January continues for Strike.TV with the debut of two more shows, both a bit off the beaten path of standard web fare. Dangerous Women, which premiered January 22nd, and Fusion, debuting today, both take up residence far away from three-minute comedy sketches and twenty-something angst. Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly, the three female leads from Sam Raimi's 1981 camp-horror classic The Evil Dead, star in Dangerous Women as suburban housewives, though despite a long voice-over introduction in episode one, this trio seems to live a long way from Wisteria Lane. The first episode is nearly all expository information, until a shadowy figure is seen behind Sandweiss in the final scene. The multi-genre series from writer-producer David O'Malley and director Lee Miller claims to be "part hyper-drama, with tantalizing doses of horror, suspense, satire, soap opera, fantasy and even sci-fi." Fusion, meanwhile, sets up an X-Files-like...

Daryl Hannah, Roy Scheider, Eric Roberts and Sean Young are on their way to Alpine Pictures' Dark Honeymoon. David O'Malley is directing the thriller, which is being produced by Michael T. Meltzer. The script, written by O'Malley, follows a man who marries a seductive woman after a brief and passionate relationship. During their honeymoon on the Oregon coast, he uncovers the terrible truth about her as those around them begin to die mysterious and violent deaths. Shooting with the decidedly retro cast is scheduled to begin in May.
