John Oates held very little back as he discussed his ongoing legal battle with Daryl Hall and the threadbare nature of the duo’s relationship in recent years in a new Good Morning America interview.
Late last year, Hall filed a restraining order against Oates in an effort to stop Oates from selling his half of their business venture, Whole Oates Enterprises, to Primary Wave. Hall, in legal documents, described the sale as a “completely clandestine and bad faith move,” a characterization Oates disputed.

Singer Daryl Hall confirmed the end of the pop-rock duo Hall & Oates. Hall said a reunion between him and fellow singer John Oates is not happening soon or at all. Known for hit songs like, “Maneater” and “Rich Girl,” the duo formed in 1970 and have an extensive career spanning over 50 years.
“I haven’t had a creative relationship with John for at least 25 years,” Hall told Variety about Oates. “We didn’t write songs together. We didn’t do anything together except perform live shows. We had an arrangement that I couldn’t play my solo songs on stage with Hall & Oates—and now I get to.”
Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates in November 2023 over financial disputes. Hall accused Oates of “the ultimate partnership betrayal” after Oates planned to sell his share of their co-owned company, Whole Oats Enterprises Llp. Hall also filed a restraining order against Oates.

It’s hard to imagine iconic duos with their other half. What’s Abbott without Costello? Mac without cheese? Hall without Oates? Well, John Oates is looking to show you just what that might be, announcing a new album titled “Reunion” – quite ironic considering there will never be another one between him and Daryl Hall, the pop duo behind “Private Eyes” and “Maneater”, with Oates now saying the only person he’s going to reunite with is himself.
As John Oates told Rolling Stone, “I’ve been trying to rediscover who I am as an individual, both personally and on the professional and creative side. I realized there was a deeper and more nuanced meaning to ‘reunion.’” This rediscovery comes not long after news broke that Daryl Hall was seeking to sue John Oates over the latter attempting to sell his share in their collaborations, putting a nail in a rather storied partnership and career.

John Oates has lost that loving feeling for Hall & Oates. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the artist said he has “moved on” from his longtime duo with Daryl Hall.
When asked about a lawsuit filed by Hall last year, Oates called it a “very boring business issue” and said he had already felt the desire to focus on his solo career anyway. “As far as I’m concerned, I’ve moved on,” he told Rolling Stone. “I feel like I have a new lease on my creative life.”

Oates continued by saying that he and Hall wanted to be seen as two separate artists from the beginning. “Daryl and I have always called ourselves Daryl Hall and John Oates, because we always wanted to be perceived as two individuals who work together,” he explained. “That was very important to us. When John Oates spoke to Rolling Stone in January 2020, he explained how balancing his time between massive Hall & Oates concerts with his longtime creative partner Daryl Hall and intimate solo gigs provided him with a dream life. “It keeps me balanced,” he said. “[When I tour solo], I carry my own gear. I show up with my guitar in my hand and put the amp in the back of my car. It’s real and I love it. Then I go out there with Daryl and we’re flying around in private planes and...

For the majority of John Oates’ professional career, solo work was a means to keep busy and creatively fulfilled between the Daryl Hall & John Oates projects that took up most of his time. But now that the duo has hopelessly fractured after more than 50 years of partnership, Oates has the time to concentrate all his energies on his own music, beginning with his new LP, Reunion, out May 17.

The Oscar-nominated song was a hit for Kermit (and Jim Henson) after it featured in 1979’s The Muppet Movie, and over the next decades was covered by the likes of the Carpenters, the Chicks, Kenny Loggins, and Nelson, whose tender rendition became a classic in its own right after it featured on his 2001 album also titled Rainbow Connection.

As the tenth anniversary of Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas was approaching, Dave Kaplan —whose Surfdog Records released the haunting album in 2011 — was pondering ways to honor it. A late-period landmark for Campbell, who died in 2017 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Ghost on the Canvas found the venerable pop-country singer and guitarist covering songs by a new generation of writers — alt-rock types like Paul Westerberg, Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard, Jakob Dylan, and Teddy Thompson. There’s a fascinating Instagram account that digs up paparazzi shots of stars attending premieres and film events in the 1990s. The main attraction is the outlandish fashion, but also the randomness of the guest list and the questions the images throw up: why were Angela Lansbury and John Oates invited to the Untouchables premiere in 1987? Did Sidney Poitier really enjoy Predator 2? Why did Richard Harris decide to bring his dog to the 1993 Independent Film awards?
One that caught my eye recently was the premiere of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting in New York. Metallica are there, looking wild-eyed and inebriated, as is a smouldering Ray Liotta. An incredibly young-looking trio of Jonny Lee Miller, Boyle and Ewen Bremner attempt to fit in.

Some of the most beautiful music ever recorded has come when two complementary voices join together, sometimes resulting in a love duet, other times a dance hit and many times a top ten hit that becomes ingrained in the pop culture movement of that generation. There are solo singers, bands and vocal groups, but there is something unique and special about a duo harmonizing.
Since the early days of rock and roll, duos have found great success across all genres, with brothers Don and Phil Everly charting with singles like “Wake Up Little Susie” in the late 1950s, and influencing the generations of rock and pop artists that have followed. In the 1960s, with the creation of Motown, duos like Sam and Dave led the way for Black musicians to appeal to white audiences with hits like “Soul Man,” while California musicians Jan and Dean were influential in popularizing “surf music.

Stand-up comic Jo Koy did his best to bring laughs back to the Golden Globes – or at least back to the opening monologue – with jokes about Meryl Streep, Succession, Oppenheimer, Ryan Gosling, Harry & Meghan and even Hall & Oates.
He was occasionally successful.
Singling out Saltburn‘s naked-dancing Barry Keoghan in the audience, Koy asked, “Where is your penis seated?”
That was one of the better zingers, so much so that Koy returned to the topic by solving the mystery of whatever happened to Bradley Cooper’s fake nose from Maestro: Watch Saltburn, he said. “That thing was dancing.”
Koy was on firmer turf with a punchline about Oppenheimer‘s length. The comic said he started watching the movie on New Year’s Eve, with a resolution to finish it in 2025.
Early in the monologue, Koy cautioned against high expectations: “I got this gig 10 days ago,” he told the audience. “You want a perfect monologue?...

John Oates is speaking out amid his ongoing legal battle with bandmate Daryl Hall, saying he has “moved on” from the experience.
Hall sued Oates last month over Oates’ plan to sell his share of their joint venture Whole Oats Enterprises to Primary Wave Music without the other’s permission. Hall was granted a temporary restraining order against Oates as legal proceedings continue.
“You can’t ignore the fact that the Hall & Oates catalog of hits and the 50-year career will always trump almost anything that Daryl does on his own or I do on my own, which is okay because I’m very proud of that music,” Oates said recently on David Yontef’s Behind the Velvet Rope podcast. “I’m really proud of what Daryl and I created together. I think we made music that will stand the test of time.”
He continued, “I don’t like to live in the past.

Singer John Oates said it is time to move on after his five-decade-long career with Daryl Hall in Hall & Oates.
Last week, Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates seeking to bar the sale of their music together.
“I have an amazing, amazing amount of respect, and I’m really, really thankful for the success that Daryl and I have had,” the musician told Entertainment Tonight. “We’ve done something over a 50-year period of time that not many people ever can say they’ve done in their lives or careers.”
“It’s been a great thing for me to do, I’m really proud of it, and I’m really happy about it,” he continued. “And I know that those songs are going to live forever.”
Despite having expressed pride in his legacy, Oates made it clear that he does not see himself as very nostalgic.

John Oates may be involved a contentious legal battle with his old bandmate, but that won’t stop him from spreading some cheer and raising awareness for a good cause with a new song, “Get Your Smile On.”
Oates said he wrote the breezy tune during the Covid-19 pandemic when he was searching for “any positive vibe I could up with.” He began sketching the song on GarageBand, but as it came together, he “decided to really produce the track the way I would have in a professional recording studio.

The judges on The Masked Singer were caught off guard when John Oates was revealed as the Anteater on the singing competition reality show on Wednesday night (December 13th) — despite the obvious “Maneater” reference staring them right in the face.
Prior to the big reveal, Oates performed a rousing rendition of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B Goode,” though his weighty costume prevented him from doing any dance moves besides flailing his arms around. Watch a full replay below.
None of the members of the judging panel — comprised of Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke — were able to guess who was under the costume. McCarthy Wahlberg in particular was beside herself after having previously interviewed Oates for SiriusXM.

Hall & Oates business dispute, which has been under wraps in sealed court documents, is now being litigated in open court, making the reasons for their legal clash clearer.
Today, a judge in Nashville, Tenn. ruled in Daryl Hall’s favor, upholding his request to keep John Oates temporarily blocked from selling his share of the Hall & Oates duo’s joint venture without his longtime partner’s permission.
The duo were represented by attorneys and were not present in court.
Hall’s attorneys claimed Oates violated the duo’s contract by moving to sell his portion of one of their business partnerships without Hall’s approval. That’s now blocked while a separate arbitration hearing on the dispute goes on. The arbitrator has until Feb. 17 to rule.

Daryl Hall is proving to be a real maneater, as more details of his restraining order and suit against former partner John Oates have come out, with Halls citing any potential music sale as likely causing “imminent irreparable harm.”
Hall’s restraining order, which was filed earlier this month, stems from Oates apparently seeking to move forward with a plan to sell the entirety of his individual rights, title and interest in Whole Oats Enterprises (Woe), a limited liability partnership which also owns the “Hall & Oates” trademark. As per the suit (obtained by People), Oates was going to sell to publisher Primary Wave Music without the consent of Hall. Cue the jokes about Hall & Oates being “Out of Touch”: Daryl Hall recently filed a lawsuit against longtime bandmate John Oates in Nashville Chancery Court. Additionally, Hall was granted a restraining order against Oates.
According to The Associated Press, the lawsuit is tied to Oates’ plans to sell his share of their joint venture to Primary Wave. Hall contends that the sale would violate the terms of their business agreement and he asked for a restraining order to temporarily block the sale while legal proceedings and a previously initiated arbitration continue. Other details about the lawsuit remain under seal.
Primary Wave previously acquired a “significant interest” in Hall & Oates’ song catalog, a move which Hall previously expressed disappointment over. “It got sold off for me and I didn’t get the money,” Hall said in a 2021 interview. He also advised artists against selling their publishing rights, saying “all you have is that.

John Oates has issued a social media statement calling for empathy, but avoiding the main issue of the moment: why he and longtime collaborator Daryl Hall are engaged in litigation.
The 75-year-old posted a Thanksgiving selfie Thursday, offering a message calling for worldwide understanding.

The 77-year-old Hall is suing Oates and has been granted a restraining order against his longtime bandmate.
