ABC has made it a priority this season to turn sophomore series “Will Trent” into an established hit — and so far the strategy seems to be working. The drama’s Season 2 premiere already posted one of the Alphabet net’s most-watched scripted drama episodes among live+same day total viewers in years, at 4.77 million.
Now, after three days of viewing on ABC, Hulu and digital platforms, “Will Trent” has grown by nearly 3 million viewers, to 7.68 million. And its adults 18-49 average is up 142%, from 0.33 to 0.8.
Network execs attribute the growth to an extended plan to expose the show to audiences on multiple platforms and in various time slots. Buoyed by the show’s early signs of success in Season 1, ABC developed an awareness campaign to capitalize on that. This past summer, ABC aired reruns of “Will Trent” Season 1 on Friday nights to court the “20/20” audiences on that night. The...

Laura Chinn’s feature film writing and directing debut hits close to the heart — her heart especially — in a semi-autobiographical story set in 2005 and inspired by her own growing pains at a dark time in her family’s life as her brother is dying of cancer and moved unknowingly into what turned out to be the same nursing facility, Suncoast, where Terri Schiavo was also a patient.
If you don’t know the name, Terri Schiavo, you probably weren’t seeing the news in 2005 as this was the notorious right-to-die case that actually started in 1998 in a dispute between Schiavo’s husband and parents over removing the feeding tube of the woman who was in a irreversible vegetative state. It sparked worldwide protests by many on all sides including religious zealots, non-stop news coverage, government interference and more all playing out in front of this Florida facility where Chinn’s brother,...

The Disney-owned broadcast network has handed out a second-season renewal for its drama series Will Trent, starring and produced by Ramón Rodríguez.
“We’re so thankful to our ABC and Hulu fans for joining us on this wild ride and watching Will Trent. When we set out to bring the series to television screens, we wanted to do justice to the gritty, thrilling world that Karin Slaughter created with her best-selling book series. Liz Heldens, Dan Thomsen and the creative team have developed complex and nuanced characters that people are relating to on a human level — and it hasn’t hurt having our little star, Betty, on the call sheet. We’re so excited for the opportunity to dive deeper into these stories with season two,” Rodríguez said in a statement announcing the pickup Tuesday.

ABC has renewed drama series Will Trent, starring Ramón Rodríguez, for a second season. This marks the first ABC freshman show to get a renewal decision this season and comes ahead of the show’s Season 1 finale on May 2.
The early pickup does not come as a surprise. As Deadline has reported, Will Trent has been leading the ABC freshman pack and was considered a shoo-in for renewal. The series, from 20th Television, is ABC’s No. 1 new drama this season in total viewers (9.9 million) and adults 18-49 (1.65 rating) after 35 days of viewing across linear and digital platforms. It is the strongest series in the Tuesday 10 pm hour in total viewers — a longtime weak spot for ABC — since Big Sky during the 2020-2021 season. The series is improving its time slot over comparable weeks last season by 143% in total viewers and by 25% among adults 18-49 this season. It also gains...

The Resident is no more at Fox.
The network has canceled its medical drama after six seasons. The decision comes nearly three months after The Resident, produced by Disney’s 20th Television, finished its 13-episode sixth season.
Speculation about the show’s fate has swirled since the season — the shortest of the show’s six — ended. The Resident had its lowest-rated season to date among adults 18-49, averaging a 0.53 rating in the key ad demographic over seven days of viewing (versus 0.7 last season). According to Fox, the show’s cross-platform audience of 6.9 million viewers was down 12 percent from the 2021-22 season.
When The Resident premiered in January 2018, 20th TV was still part of the 21st Century Fox family that included the broadcast network. A month earlier, though, Fox and Disney had agreed to a $71 billion sale of the studio and several cable assets to Disney; that deal closed in 2019.

Nasim Pedrad’s cringe comedy series “Chad” has been saved from certain death. The series, which aired its first season on TBS, will move to the Roku Channel for Season 2, IndieWire has confirmed.
In July, TBS pulled Season 2 from its programming schedule the day it was scheduled to premiere and confirmed to several outlets that the season would not air on the network. The show, which had already wrapped production on the season, was the highest profile consequence of restructuring at the channel following the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The merger prompted the company, under the leadership of David Zaslav, to cut original scripted programming from TBS and other networks in its portfolio.

The second season of Nasim Pedrad’s coming-of-age comedy series will run on The Roku Channel after it was scrapped as part of the cost-cutting measures at Warner Bros. Discovery cable network TBS.

Exclusive: ABC is developing Worst House on the Block, a half-hour comedy series from 20th Television.
Written by Niki Schwartz-Wright (Pivoting) and to be directed by Natalia Anderson (Maggie), Worst House on the Block has a Beverly Hillbillies vibe to it. In the show, when a poor family from South Texas inherits the worst house on the block in a chic L.A. neighborhood, they cause quite a stir among their new neighbors. Tensions may flare, but ultimately, we’ll watch as three different families, with nothing in common but their Zip code and how overwhelmed they feel by the sheer number of Love Island episodes there are to watch, start to find common ground and, slowly but surely, friendship.
Schwartz-Wright and Anderson executive produce with 3 Arts’ Oly Obst.
Most recently, Schwartz-Wright served as co-executive producer on Fox’s comedy series Pivoting. Before that, she was a co-executive producer on the NBC comedy series Abby’s.

The drama series “Will Trent” has officially been ordered at ABC, Variety has learned.
The show was originally ordered to pilot at ABC in February as past of the broadcaster’s 2022 pilot season slate. The show will debut at midseason for ABC during the 2022-2023 broadcast season.
Based on Karin Slaughter’s “Will Trent” novel series, the show follows Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (Gbi). Trent was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.
Along with Rodríguez, the show also stars Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, and Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner.

ABC has picked up drama pilot Will Trent (working title) to series for a midseason launch. Will Trent, starring Ramón Rodríguez, is one of four 2022 ABC drama pilots whose production was targeted for off-cycle and the first of the bunch to land a series order.
Will Trent emerged as an early front-runner in what ABC calls “second cycle” as part of its year-round development strategy. There was a small hiccup in the final stretch, which I hear was over the nature of storytelling, but the pilot remained on track for a pickup. In anticipation of a series order, writers have been working on scripts for the past three weeks. Decision on ABC’s other strong second cycle drama contender, The Company You Keep starring Milo Ventimiglia, has not been made yet. The network last month passed on the untitled therapist drama pilot written by Kay Oyegun.

Full Frontal With Samantha Bee is over.
TBS has officially canceled the late-night series after seven seasons.
“As we continue to shape our new programming strategy, we’ve made some difficult, business-based decisions. Full Frontal With Samantha Bee will not return to TBS,” a network spokesperson explained to Deadline.

Nasim Pedrad’s “Chad” was pulled from TBS’ programming hours before Season 2 of the comedy series was set to air on July 11, a spokesperson for the network confirmed to Variety.
According to the spokesperson, TBS is now looking for “the right home” for the series. As the news comes the day the premiere was scheduled, and a trailer has already been released, it’s clear that at least a significant portion, if not the entire season, has been shot and produced.
The pulling of “Chad” signals the continued demise of scripted content at TBS and TNT. As Variety reported exclusively in April, the Warner-owned cablers halted development of all new scripted projects as a result of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, leaving already-popular series like “Snowpiercer” hanging in the balance. Wbd is overturning strategy for the so-called “TNets,” including truTV, in CEO David Zaslav’s efforts to cut 3 billion in costs,...

After multiple delays, TBS has made a decision about the future of Chad, and it's not good news.
The Nasim Pedrad comedy series was initially set to air earlier this year, but it was pulled from the schedule ahead of launch.
With fans left in the lurch, a new premiere date was set, but it emerged this morning that the series would not be premiering as planned.
Now, THR reports that TBS has pulled the plug on the series and that it would not be airing the completed season ... at all.
“As we continue to assess content and implement a new strategy for our network, we can now share that season two of Chad will not air on TBS. We are proactively exploring various options to find the right home for it,” a statement from TBS reads.

TBS is cutting ties with Chad.
The cable outlet won’t air the completed second season of the comedy series created by and starring Nasim Pedrad. The decision comes as parent company Warner Bros. Discovery continues to move away from scripted programming on its linear channels, though it will help the show’s producers try to find a new home.

Exclusive: The run of TBS’ series Chad has been cut short. The completed second season of the coming-of-age comedy, created by and starring Saturday Night Live alum Nasim Pedrad as teen boy Chad Amani, will not run on the network as previously announced.
The show, whose first season was well received by critics and ranked as 2021’s #1 new scripted cable comedy series, is the latest TBS casualty of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger. It joins the Damon Wayans-fronted new comedy series Kill the Orange Bear which got the chop a week before it was set to begin production, and reality series The Big D, which was scrapped weeks ahead of its premiere.
The decisions come as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and his team are examining the WarnerMedia assets, with the linear TNets under particular scrutiny. At TBS sibling TNT, a decision was recently made that the linear...
