Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the second season finale of “For All Mankind,” streaming now on Apple TV Plus.
The biggest difference between the two seasons of Apple TV Plus’ series “For All Mankind” was that the storyline orbited more strongly around the moon in the second season. For costume designer Jill M. Ohanneson, that meant more space suits.
The alternate-history series sees the Soviet Union land on the moon before the United States, and focuses on what might have happened if the space race had never ended. In the second season finale, the American astronauts at the Jamestown base held Soviet cosmonaut Rolan Baranov (Alexander Sokovikov) under asylum, while the Soviets held commander Alex Rossi (Scott Michael Campbell) in custody. As Alex tried to wager an exchange, Rossi begged, “Don’t do it, don’t do it…” and gunfire is heard.

‘For All Mankind’ costumes: Accuracy matters, but let’s tweak reality on bold Apple TV+ space series
“My job is to tell the story of each person’s world,” notes Jill M. Ohanneson, costume designer for the Apple TV+ show “For All Mankind.”
That means Ohanneson designs many worlds for the diverse characters caught up in the U.S. vs. Soviet space race during the 1960s and ’70s. But “For All Mankind” takes a new, bold “What if …?” approach by flipping history to ask: What would the world look like if the Soviets had beaten the U.S. to the moon?
Ohanneson at least shows us what she believes the fashions would look like. The past Emmy nominee (“Six Feet Under”) now creates distinctive costumes for 20 to 30 characters per episode as they battle intrigue at Nasa, life and death up in the sky, and dark feelings back at home with families who worry about success and safety.

“My main creative approach was making sure the costumes were as authentic and real as possible in order to offset the fact that we were creating an alternate reality,” Jill M. Ohanneson says about creating the fashions on “For All Mankind” on AppleTV+. “We need costumes to help anchor the viewers in Houston in the late ’60s and early ’70s, and it was very important that the costumes be appropriate for that part of the country vs. what was going on in high fashion N.Y. or beach casual L.A. These are people who shop Sears, Montgomery Ward and J.C. Penney, not Neiman Marcus.”...

Apple TV+‘s “For All Mankind” asks a simple question: what would’ve happened if the U.S. had lost the space race to the Soviet Union? “What would the ripple effects of that have been,” pondered costume designer Jill M. Ohanneson. “How would it have affected culture, politics, design — all those things that are affected by what happens in the world?” Watch our exclusive video interview with Ohanneson above.
The show, created by Ronald D. Moore, Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert, is both “a big period show” and “a big space show.” So she looked at it as “two worlds,” each with “a different feeling visually.” For Nasa, “I wanted the color palette to be more grays, navies and cooler tones.” But outside of Nasa, especially at the homes of the astronauts, “we had a much warmer palette: beiges, rust, oranges, ocher yellow, tans, browns, greens.” In that way,...

You may never look like Emily Thorne. And you may never want to act like Emily Thorne.
But you will soon be able to dress like Emily Thorne.
ABC Studios and the Matchbook Co. — which represents the show's costume designer, Jill Ohanneson - have teamed up with licensing agency Firefly Brand Management to create clothing and accessories inspired by the drama, according to Women’s Wear Daily.
First up will be a series of dresses based on Emily and Victoria's fashion tastes, with the line hitting a yet-to-be-announced retailer just after the premiere of Revenge Season 3, in time for the holidays.
Wwd adds that ABC is also negotiating for licensing deals for Revenge-themed plus-size apparel, lingerie, accessories, shoes and men’s clothing.

Perhaps the most surprising nomination, even though it shouldn’t be, is Jacqueline Durran for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Overruling the costumers’ chapter vote for Anonymous (Lisy Christl), general voters chose Tinker, Tailor instead – and with good reason. Critic Guy Lodge goes into detail about the film’s costumes in this article, so we’ll not tread on his toes. One...
