Republic Pictures, an historic movie label founded in 1935 and shuttered in 1967, has been revived by parent company Paramount Global. The banner will function as an acquisitions play, releasing titles acquired by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
“We’ve chosen to revitalize the Republic banner given its storied history of delivering popular movies to a global audience,” said Dan Cohen, Paramount chief content licensing officer and newly named president of Republic Pictures. “With our best-in-class global distribution teams working to identify the best homes around the world, we aim to continue that legacy by offering audiences great entertainment across all genres.”

If you set out to combine the worst parts of Hallmark holiday movies with the worst parts of frenetic ‘90s rom-coms, you’d probably wind up with something a lot like “About Fate.” The women are nuts, the men are clueless and the production is so cheap you could pass the time spotting every mistake no one bothered to fix.
Maybe a movie that has so little ambition doesn’t deserve such a harsh summation. But we have, for the most part, moved beyond the most enervating chick-flick stereotypes. So it’s more than a little dispiriting to see Margot (Emma Roberts) lose her mind when her boyfriend Kip suggests they get dinner at Bennigan’s.
For reasons that make sense only to screenwriter Tiffany Paulsen — who also wrote the Roberts vehicles “Nancy Drew” and “Holidate” — Margot is fixated on the idea that Kip must be proposing. They’ve only been dating for three months,...

Taking cues from an aunt who brings a string of random guys to family holiday gatherings may not be wise. Yet, in the pleasantly diverting rom-com “Holidate” (streaming on Netflix), that’s exactly what Sloane (Emma Roberts) does, with a twist. After meeting prickly, she and handsome strange Jackson enter into a pact. They’d been standing in a returns line at a mall, one-upping each other about the miseries of being single during holidays. Just ahead of New Year’s Eve (surely among the more demanding of connection holidays), the two agree to be one another’s faux dates for the heavy-pressure night.
Briskly directed by John Whitesell, written by Tiffany Paulsen, “Holidate” won’t change your mind about the tread-worn challenges of romantic comedies, but its leads leverage their charms nicely. The film begins with Sloane arriving at her mother’s on Christmas. We get an eyeful of...

Sloane (Emma Roberts) and Jackson (Luke Bracey) are barely into their first encounter before they start yammering about the usual cinematic expectations of the genre — including the exact ones that will unfold in the film to come — as well as the very same outdated “men are from Mars, women are from Venus” concepts that have bolstered such movies since film history invented them. But while plenty of rom-coms have tackled this tongue-in-cheek approach before, “Holidate” never attempts to subvert the very things it mocks, instead opting for
At least Roberts and Bracey make for a charming pair, and their chemistry continually bolsters a script that never defies expectations, even as it tries to skewer them with flat jokes and bizarre swings at raunchy punchlines. At...

Netflix has handed a series order to First Kill, a YA vampire series based on the short story by New York Times bestselling author Victoria “V. E.” Schwab, with American Horror Story and Scream Queens star Emma Roberts set to produce via her Belletrist Productions. The eight-episode, one-hour series was created, written and executive produced by Schwab. Felicia D. Henderson also writes and serves as showrunner.
Schwab’s short story was published in Imprint’s Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite by Natalie C. Parker and Zoraida Córdova, a collection of short stories about vampires that was released in September.
It was a highly competitive situation, we hear, with Belletrist Productions winning the rights over 18 other entities.

The first trailer for Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey starrer 'Holidate' is out now.
Netflix has dropped the trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy flick 'Holidate' on Wednesday, and it looks like it could be nearly as good as The Kissing Booth.
The newly released trailer teases one of the most systematic rom-com plots imaginable.
The film revolves around a hopelessly single Sloane (Roberts) who's "the only single one left" in her family as she turns to Jackson (Bracey) to help her avoid awkward questions from her friends and family. Luke’s character is a perpetually single guy who is tired of being pressured to 'settle down'.
The official synopsis for 'Holidate' hints the same and reads, “Sloane and Jackson hate the holidays. They constantly find themselves single, sitting at the kid's table, or stuck with awkward dates. But when these two strangers meet during one particularly bad Christmas,...

Kenny Ortega of the Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” franchise has just signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix. The pact with the producer, director, and choreographer continues Netflix’s aggressive push to lock down major talent as media giants such as the Walt Disney Company and Comcast prepare their own streaming services. In recent months, Netflix has signed deals with the likes of Ryan Murphy (“Glee”), Shonda Rhimes (“Scandal”), and Pixar vet Darla K. Anderson.
“As a fan of Netflix and their dynamic range of high quality content, I am thrilled to begin a creative relationship with the company,” Ortega said in a statement. “I’m super excited about the projects we already have in development and the shared enthusiasm I feel from the company. l look forward to this new Netflix collaboration with the highest hopes.”

High School Musical franchise filmmaker Kenny Ortega has signed a multi-year overall deal with Netflix with his first two projects being a feature musical adaptation of Elise Primavera’s book series Auntie Claus, and the original series Julie and the Phantoms.
Ortega will direct and produce Auntie Claus (working title) which follows a young girl who is determined to get to the bottom of why her eccentric, Christmas-loving Aunt disappears every Christmas. Tiffany Paulsen will adapt.
Julie and the Phantoms, which Ortega will executive produce, is a musical comedy series based on an International Emmy Award-nominated Brazilian television series. Julie is a teenage girl who finds her passion for music and life with the help of a high-concept band of three teen boys (The Phantoms) who have been dead for 25 years. Julie, in turn, helps them become the band they were never able to be. Dan Cross and David Hoge will serve as showrunners and EPs on the series, with George Salinas and Jaime Aymerich of Crossover Entertainment, as well as Hugo Janeba and Joao Tikhmiroff of Mixer Entertainment. Jason La Padura and Natalie Hart (High School Musical and Descendants trilogies) are now casting the titular roles. Truman Alfaro will serve as Ortega’s development executive.
“Throughout the course of his career, Kenny Ortega has inspired generations of artists and audiences alike. That he has chosen to make Netflix his creative home to work on both feature films and series is thrilling. We can’t wait to see what he brings to Netflix to delight musical-loving families and audiences around the globe,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

Netflix has been rolling out movie after movie in all the different categories lately, and has just announced that Emma Roberts has signed on to star in their latest rom-com, Holidate. It looks like Roberts is taking after her famous aunt Julia Roberts, who was pretty much the queen of rom-coms in decades past. Sidebar - I watched a snippet of an interview the other day where Julia Roberts said she was too old to be in rom-coms anymore. She’s 51, looks at least ten years younger, but I don’t even think that matters! She’s beautiful and funny, and a good actress. And people fall in love at every age. So I don’t think she should pigeon hole herself. But, I digress.

Netflix has won an auction for the Tiffany Paulsen script Holidate, a package that has Emma Roberts starring and Emmy winner John Whitesell directing.
The romantic comedy revolves around two strangers who are fed up with the pressures of holiday dating and make a deal to be each other’s designated “holidate” over the course of an entire year.
The film is produced by Wonderland’s McG and Mary Viola, who’ve made I Feel Pretty and The Duff. This is the company’s fifth project with Netflix after The Babysitter, When We First Met, the currently in-production Tall Girl, and the upcoming family action film Rim of the World.
Roberts’ credits include We’re the Millers and Scream Queens, and she’s part of the cast of American Horror Story: Apocalypse. Whitesell directed Big Momma’s House 2 and Malibu’s Most Wanted.

Disney has released a new trailer for their upcoming TV movie remake of the classic 1987 film Adventures in Babysitting. I loved that original movie mostly because, as I've previously stated, I had a crush on Elisabeth Shue.
Disney's upcoming remake looks horrendously awful. The story follows two babysitters, who are played by Sabrina Carpenter (Girl Meets World) and Sofia Carson (Disney’s Descendants). They go on an adventure through the city looking for one of the kids that they’re supposed to be taking care of.
The trailer features the two characters who find themselves on stage in a club in some kind of freestyle rap battle and it’s just one of the worst things ever. My kids are going to want to watch this, but I think I’ll just show them the original film instead.

Elisabeth Shue’s 1987 film Adventures in Babysitting is a classic. It’s one of those movies that I used to to watch all of the time when I was growing up. I totally had a crush on Elisabeth Shue!
Well, the Disney Channel made a remake of that movie and the first trailer for it has been released. The new movie stars Sabrina Carpenter of Girl Meets World and Sofia Carson of The Descendants as two babysitters who have lost one of the kids they’re supposed to be taking care of.
The movie looks exactly like what you’d expect from the Disney Channel. It looks nowhere near as good as the original film, and you certainly won’t be hearing the line, “Don’t fuck with the babysitter,” in a Disney Channel movie.

Sabrina Carpenter ("Girl Meets World") and Sofia Carson ("Disney's Descendants") are set to star in "Further Adventures in Babysitting," a Disney Channel original telemovie said to be "inspired by" Chris Columbus‘ 1987 comedy classic "Adventures in Babysitting" (aka. "A Night on the Town").
The original starred Elizabeth Shue as a babysitter who winds up getting into some crazy situations with three kids she’s supposed to be babysitting. While it performed only so-so at the box-office, it became a big hit on video and TV. These days it's seen as a seminal film of the decade like "The Goonies" and "The Breakfast Club".
An attempt was made back in 2007 to remake it with Raven Symone, that version thankfully fell through. This telemovie take will be penned by Tiffany Paulsen ("Nancy Drew") and deals with two competing babysitters who go on the hunt for a missing child.

Chris Columbus' "Adventures in Babysitting" is one of those Disney movies that is really quite good but gets glossed over a lot of the time because it wasn't a big hit when it was released and the studio has never really gotten behind it since (although, somewhat surprisingly, a high definition 25th anniversary edition was released on Blu-ray). While a sequel or remake or something has been floated around over the past decade, with both Raven Symone and Miley Cyrus having been linked to the project, it looks like things are finally getting underway on a proper follow-up (according to AdWeek). That's right folks, coming soon to the Disney Channel is.... "Further Adventures in Babysitting."

According to Deadline Hollywood, Fox is in talks to pick up a half-hour comedy project which is being described as a female "Big Bang Theory" with "Wild Hogs" helmer Walt Becker and Tiffany Paulsen ("Nancy Drew") penning the script. This would reunite Hewitt with Fox, the place she got her big break on in "Party of Five." Becker is a film director and writer whose credits include the winning "Wild Hogs," "Van Wilder" and the recent "Old Hogs" comedies. He also created "Glory Daze" with Michael LeSieur which TBS picked up and will premiere later this year. That stars Matt Bush, Justin Chon, Natalie Dreyfuss, James Earl, Chelsea Gilligan and Julianna Guill.

Exclusive: Ok, this is not a Ghost Whisperer revival but probably the next best thing for the die-hard fans of the cancelled CBS drama - a possible new series with Ghost Whisperer star Jennifer Love Hewitt. I hear Fox is in talks to pick up the project, a half-hour comedy described as a female Big Bang Theory. Wild Hogs director Walt Becker and Tiffany Paulsen (Nancy Drew) will be writing the script with Hewitt attached to star. The project would reunite Hewitt with Fox where she got her break as co-star on Party of Five. Becker, a feature writer-director whose credits also include Van Wilder and Old Dogs, is a relative newcomer to TV but scored big this spring with the period fraternity comedy pilot Glory Daze, which he directed and co-wrote with Michael LeSieur. TBS picked it up to series, which is slated to premiere later this year. Meanwhile,...

Ready to have some fun and a headache? If it actually was opposite day, this news story would read as follows: Oren Aviv, who is not the studio production president at Disney, is terrible at coming up with fun story ideas for Disney to exploit. He didn't conceptualize National Treasure, a film I totally couldn't stand, and definitely did not see in theaters upwards of 4 times. The basic conceptual idea for Opposite Day -- a movie not about a day wherein someone has to do the opposite of their normal daily routine -- hasn't been popular in Hollywood's recent past, and definitely not in movies like Sliding Doors and The Family Man. Disney will not employ Nancy Drew writer Tiffany Paulsen for the Opposite Day project. Paulsen is not also attached to a project that will not be a reboot of the Adventures in Babysitting franchise. That film will definitely not be called Further Adventures in Babysitting...

Wasn't that the subject of a Spongebob episode? Should say so to Disney production president Oren Aviv who claims his idea to be an original one... The studio is developing a pitch called Opposite Day with a screenplay commissioned from Nancy Drew scribe Tiffany Paulsen who's also contracted by the Mouse to pen Further Adventures In Babysitting. 'Cause the original is an 80s classic so it Has to be desecrated. Though if they get Vincent D'Onofrio back as Thor, I'll forgive that...
